An Operator-Based Account Of Semantic Processing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, C. Anton Rytting Jan 2006

An Operator-Based Account Of Semantic Processing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, C. Anton Rytting

Faculty Publications

This paper explores issues of psychological plausibility in modeling natural language understanding within Soar, a symbolic cognitive model. It focuses on constructing syntactic and semantic representations in simulated real time, with particular emphasis on word sense disambiguation (WSD). We discuss (i) what level of WSD should be modeled and (ii) how to use resources such as WordNet to inform these models. A preliminary model of coarse-grained WSD is included to show how syntactic, semantic, and other knowledge sources interact in Soar. Finally, we explore issues of interleaving, learning, and integrating other WSD approaches with Soar's native model of learning.

Improving The Rolling Contract, Stephen E. Friedman Jan 2006

Improving The Rolling Contract, Stephen E. Friedman

American University Law Review

This article addresses the increasingly common problem of buyers finding important contract terms inside the box of a newly purchased item instead of learning about them before or during purchase. The failure of courts to develop a satisfactory approach to deciding which contact terms sellers may provide after purchase is of great significance in light of the rapid proliferation of rolling contracts. In this article, Friedman proposes a mechanism that will ensure that sellers have the flexibility to defer presentation of some terms but that will also protect purchasers against the unfair imposition of unexpected and important terms arriving at …

Interventions With Family Caregivers, Jonathan G. Sandberg Jan 2006

Interventions With Family Caregivers, Jonathan G. Sandberg

Faculty Publications

As a typical self-centered teenager, I struggled to find anything good about grandma moving in with us. Grandma required a lot of help with stairs, dressing, bathing; I noticed this brought a new kind of stress into our home. I think it was particularly hard on my mother, who provided most of the daily care for her mother-in-law. Living in a basement bedroom, I could escape form the stress if I wanted. I did not share a bathroom or hallway, I did not have to listen to incoherent talk and cries in the night as Alzheimer's disease began to take …

The 2004 Presidential Election: Did Voters Bring Their Pocketbooks To The Polls?, Paul Masi Jan 2006

The 2004 Presidential Election: Did Voters Bring Their Pocketbooks To The Polls?, Paul Masi

Undergraduate Economic Review

In the wake of the 2004 presidential election, supporters of Senator John Kerry’s candidacy searched for explanations of voter behavior. The Kerry campaign succeeded in turning out record numbers of low-income voters. Kerry strategists predicted that these voters would hold incumbent President George W. Bush responsible for a decline in their personal economic well-being. Kerry attempted to facilitate this electoral behavior by offering what he believed to be an economic plan attractive to low-income voters. The pocketbook theory of voting underpinned this strategy. This theory asserts that voters consider the perceived impact which an incumbent has had on their personal …

Point Of Care Healthcare Quality Control For Patients Using Mobile Devices, Owen Lynch Jan 2006

Point Of Care Healthcare Quality Control For Patients Using Mobile Devices, Owen Lynch

Masters

The advances made in the domain of mobile telecommunications over the last decade offer great potential for developments in many areas. One such area that can benefit from mobile communications is telemedicine, which is the provision of medical assistance, in one form or another, to patients who are geographically separated from the healthcare provider. When a person is ill, individual attention from medical professionals is of the utmost importance until they have returned to full health. However, people who suffer with long term and chronic illnesses may need life long care and often must manage their condition at home. Many …

The Involvement Of Calcium And Map Kinase Signaling Pathways In The Production Of Radiation-Induced Bystander Effects, Fiona Lyng, Paula Maguire, B. Mcclean, C. Seymour, Carmel Mothersill Jan 2006

The Involvement Of Calcium And Map Kinase Signaling Pathways In The Production Of Radiation-Induced Bystander Effects, Fiona Lyng, Paula Maguire, B. Mcclean, C. Seymour, Carmel Mothersill

Articles

Much evidence now exists regarding radiation-induced bystander effects, but the mechanisms involved in the transduction of the signal are still unclear. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways have been linked to growth factor-mediated regulation of cellular events such as proliferation, senescence, differentiation and apoptosis. Activation of multiple MAPK pathways such as the ERK, JNK and p38 pathways have been shown to occur after exposure of cells to radiation and a variety of other toxic stresses. Previous studies have shown oxidative stress and calcium signaling to be important in radiation-induced bystander effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate …

Ecue: A Spam Filter That Uses Machine Learning To Track Concept Drift, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham, Barry Smyth Jan 2006

Ecue: A Spam Filter That Uses Machine Learning To Track Concept Drift, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham, Barry Smyth

Conference papers

While text classification has been identified for some time as a promising application area for Artificial Intelligence, so far few deployed applications have been described. In this paper we present a spam filtering system that uses example-based machine learning techniques to train a classifier from examples of spam and legitimate email. This approach has the advantage that it can personalise to the specifics of the user’s filtering preferences. This classifier can also automatically adjust over time to account for the changing nature of spam (and indeed changes in the profile of legitimate email). A significant software engineering challenge in developing …

Feature Based And Feature Free Textual Cbr: A Comparison In Spam Filtering, Sarah Jane Delany, Derek Bridge Jan 2006

Feature Based And Feature Free Textual Cbr: A Comparison In Spam Filtering, Sarah Jane Delany, Derek Bridge

Conference papers

Spam filtering is a text classification task to which Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) has been successfully applied. We describe the ECUE system, which classifies emails using a feature-based form of textual CBR. Then, we describe an alternative way to compute the distances between cases in a feature-free fashion, using a distance measure based on text compression. This distance measure has the advantages of having no set-up costs and being resilient to concept drift. We report an empirical comparison, which shows the feature-free approach to be more accurate than the feature-based system. These results are fairly robust over different compression algorithms in …

Observability Conditions For Target States With Bearing-Only Measurements In Three-Dimensional Case, Mehdi Ferdowsi Jan 2006

Observability Conditions For Target States With Bearing-Only Measurements In Three-Dimensional Case, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In target tracking with a passive sensor such as infrared seekers, angle-only information is determined. In this case no information about the range of the target is provided and unobservable system is resulted. This paper studies the observability of discrete time three-dimensional bearing-only target tracking. The target is assumed to be moving in a straight line while a single moving observer (own-ship) measures its relative (elevation and azimuth) bearing angles. By transforming the inherently nonlinear bearing measurements into a pseudo-linear form, a linear Least Squares (LS) estimator is formulated. Observability is then analyzed by studying the solvability of the associated …

Disinfection Of Swine Wastewater Using Chlorine, Ultraviolet Light And Ozone, John J. Macauley, Zhimin Qiang, Rao Y. Surampalli, Melanie R. Mormile, Craig D. Adams Jan 2006

Disinfection Of Swine Wastewater Using Chlorine, Ultraviolet Light And Ozone, John J. Macauley, Zhimin Qiang, Rao Y. Surampalli, Melanie R. Mormile, Craig D. Adams

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Veterinary antibiotics are widely used at concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) to prevent disease and promote growth of livestock. However, the majority of antibiotics are excreted from animals in urine, feces, and manure. Consequently, the lagoons used to store these wastes can act as reservoirs of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. There is currently no regulation or control of these systems to prevent the spread of these bacteria and their genes for antibiotic resistance into other environments. This study was conducted to determine the disinfection potential of chlorine, ultraviolet light and ozone against swine lagoon bacteria. Results indicate that a chlorine …

Adjusting The Margins: Building Bridges Between Deaf And Hearing Cultures Through Performance Arts, Luane Ruth Davis Haggerty Jan 2006

Adjusting The Margins: Building Bridges Between Deaf And Hearing Cultures Through Performance Arts, Luane Ruth Davis Haggerty

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study addresses a gap in scholarship on leadership styles in the Deaf community. There is an invisible style of leadership differing from the mainstream culture not previously addressed in the literature at any depth. My study is composed of three interlocking parts; the practice of anthropology: fieldwork, analysis, and presentation. The foundation for my fieldwork, is an "archeology of the structure of the perceived world" (Merleau-Ponty), using the holding environment of the rehearsal process and the structural process of an acting technique called Del-Sign. Del-Sign is a fusion acting style created by combining American Sign Language and the Delsarte …

Leadership As Teaching: Mapping The Thinking Of Administrators And Teachers, Mary Ellen Steele-Pierce Jan 2006

Leadership As Teaching: Mapping The Thinking Of Administrators And Teachers, Mary Ellen Steele-Pierce

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Leading and teaching both involve processes that permit others to transform their thinking. Yet there has been little systematic, empirical research to connect the two. This exploratory study examines K-12 educational leadership asking: What are the similarities and differences in the ways school administrators think about "leading" compared to the ways teachers think about "teaching"? This mixed methods study offers an examination of whether administrators think about their work in terms of "the vital teaching role of leadership" (Burns, 1978, p. 425) by creating and comparing three sets of concept maps, one for teachers and administrators and one for each …

The R-Cube: Reviewing, Reinforcing And Rewarding After Successful Module Completion, Ciaran O'Leary Jan 2006

The R-Cube: Reviewing, Reinforcing And Rewarding After Successful Module Completion, Ciaran O'Leary

Conference papers

Revisiting material previously presented and successfully assessed can lead to much frustration among teaching staff and students. Despite this, it is often a requirement due to the time lag between the point at which a student begins a module and the time when they successfully passed a prerequisite module. Also, students who successfully pass a module fit into a number of categories, from those who were successful in all components of the assessment to those who displayed the minimum level of competence required for satisfaction of the learning outcomes. We introduce a novel instructional model which we predict will be …

Visualizing The Inner Structure Of N-Body Data, Edward Dale Jan 2006

Visualizing The Inner Structure Of N-Body Data, Edward Dale

Theses

N-body simulations produce a large amount of data that must be visualized in order to extract interesting features. This data consists of thousands of particles, each with a number of properties such as velocity, mass, and acceleration, that are persisted across hundreds of time steps. Rendering these points using traditional means quickly leads to a image that is satu- rated because the number of particles is greater than the number of pixels available. Volume rendering, and particularly splatting, seeks to remedy this and allows one to see inside the volume and discern the inner structure. The definition of inner structure …

Progress On Probabilistic Encryption Schemes, Kert Richardson Jan 2006

Progress On Probabilistic Encryption Schemes, Kert Richardson

Theses

The purpose of this master's project is to study different probabilistic cryptography schemes. The older probabilistic schemes, Goldwasser-Micali and Blum-Goldwasser, will only be covered briefly for a historical perspective. Several new and promising schemes have appeared in the last 7 years, generating interest. I will be examining the Paillier and Damgard-Jurik schemes in depth. This report explains the mathematics behind the schemes along with their inherent benefits, while also suggesting some potential uses. Details are given on how I optimized the algorithms, with special emphasis on using the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) in the Damgard-Jurik algorithm as well as the …

Symmetric Private Information Retrieval Via Additive Homomorphic Probabilistic Encryption, Laura Lincoln Jan 2006

Symmetric Private Information Retrieval Via Additive Homomorphic Probabilistic Encryption, Laura Lincoln

Theses

Suppose there is a movie you would be interested in watching via pay-per-view, but you refuse to purchase the feed because you believe that the supplier will sell your information to groups paying for the contact information of all the people who purchased that movie, and the association of your name to that purchase could hinder career, relationships, or increase the amount of time you spend cleaning SPAM out of your mailbox. Private Information Retrieval (PIR) will allow you to retrieve a particular feed without the supplier knowing which feed you actually got, and Symmetric Private Information Retrieval (SPIR) will …

Initial Assessment Of The "Compressible Poor Man's Navier{Stokes (Cpmns) Equation" For Subgrid-Scale Models In Large-Eddy Simulation, Chetan Babu Velkur Jan 2006

Initial Assessment Of The "Compressible Poor Man's Navier{Stokes (Cpmns) Equation" For Subgrid-Scale Models In Large-Eddy Simulation, Chetan Babu Velkur

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Large-eddy simulation is rapidly becoming the preferred method for calculations involving turbulent phenomena. However, filtering equations as performed in traditional LES procedures leads to significant problems. In this work we present some key components in the construction of a novel LES solver for compressible turbulent flow, designed to overcome most of the problems faced by traditional LES procedures. We describe the construction of the large-scale algorithm, which employs fairly standard numerical techniques to solve the Navier{Stokes equations. We validate the algorithm for both transonic and supersonic ow scenarios. We further explicitly show that the solver is capable of capturing boundary …

New Ultra-Lightweight Stiff Panels For Space Apertures, Jonathan T. Black Jan 2006

New Ultra-Lightweight Stiff Panels For Space Apertures, Jonathan T. Black

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Stiff, ultra-lightweight thermal-formed polyimide panels considered in this dissertation are examples of next generation gossamer structures that resolve some of the technology barriers of previous, membrane-dominated gossamer designs while maintaining their low mass and low stowage volume characteristics. The research involved statically and dynamically characterizing and modeling several of these panels to develop validated computer models which can be used to determine the effects of changing manufacturing parameters and scalability. Static characterization showed substantial local nonlinear behavior that was replicated by new physics-based finite element models, and global linear bending behavior that was modeled using classical shell finite elements incorporating …

Differences In Dimensions Of Childhood Functioning In Children Of Preterm Versus Full Term Birth Status, Tameika Shenay Turner

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

As medical advances are made in the area of neonatology, more and more premature babies are surviving at younger gestational ages and lower birth weights. Growth in the survival rates of preterm infants leads to questions regarding the long term developmental trajectory of these children. The current study sought to expand on research regarding dimensions of childhood functioning and to apply it to the problem of prematurity by (a) utilizing a new instrument: the Merrill Palmer Revised edition, (b) including children of preterm and full term birth statuses from as young as 2 months of age, and (c) collecting data …

Flexible Coding Strategies In Pigeons: Retrospective And Prospective Coding Using A Radial Maze Analog Task, Kelly Ann Digian Jan 2006

Flexible Coding Strategies In Pigeons: Retrospective And Prospective Coding Using A Radial Maze Analog Task, Kelly Ann Digian

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Zentall, Steirn, and Jackson-Smith (1990) found evidence for dual coding in pigeons in a radial maze analog task. Specifically, they found that pigeons used retrospective coding in which previously chosen keys were remembered when a delay was interpolated early in a trial and prospective coding in which to-be-visited keys were remembered when a delay was interpolated late in a trial. An alternative explanation, the criterion shift hypothesis proposed by Brown, Wheeler, and Riley (1989), suggests that these data are consistent with dual coding because of an artifact of the correction procedures used by Zentall et al. The criterion hypothesis suggests …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Pyridinium Derivatives As Central Nervous System Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Ligands, Joshua Thomas Longen Ayers

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This project utilized synthesis and in vitro assays to generate antagonist SARs at various nAChR subtypes. Alkylation of the pyridino nitrogen of the nicotine molecule afforded subtype specific antagonists at a42* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. Using this data, a series of mono-azaaromatic quaternary salts were produced and evaluated in binding and functional assays for a42* and a7* nAChR subtypes and nAChR subtypes that mediate nicotine-evoked dopamine release. Additionally, bis-azaaromatic quaternary salts were synthesized and evaluated in the same assays. Two potent lead compounds were identified. N-n-dodecylnicotinium iodide (NDDNI) was found to be very potent …

The Utility Of The Structured Inventory Of Malingered Symptomatology As A Screen For The Feigning Of Neurocognitive Deficit And Psychopathology In A Civil Forensic Sample, Yvonne Renee Alwes Jan 2006

The Utility Of The Structured Inventory Of Malingered Symptomatology As A Screen For The Feigning Of Neurocognitive Deficit And Psychopathology In A Civil Forensic Sample, Yvonne Renee Alwes

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Detection of malingering is a significant concern in forensic psychological assessments. The best-validated tests currently available are time-intensive for both test-takers and mental health professionals. Thus, well-validated, brief screening measures for malingering would be useful in a forensic environment. The Structured Inventory of Malingered Symptomatology (SIMS; Smith andamp; Burger, 1997) has demonstrated potential in this role. The present study attempts replication of previous studies while extending validation from analogue and male criminal forensic samples to both men and women in a civil forensic setting. The SIMS accuracy in the detection of both neurocognitive and psychiatric symptom feigning is evaluated by …
