Phytoremediation Of Nitrate In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Mchenry County, North Dakota, Laura C. Ackerman Jan 2006

Phytoremediation Of Nitrate In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Mchenry County, North Dakota, Laura C. Ackerman

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Nitrate concentrations in the Karlsruhe aquifer (23,070 acres), located in north central McHenry County, North Dakota have been monitored by the North Dakota State Water Commission since 2001. The average nitrate-N concentration in the top ten feet of the aquifer was determined to be about 14.0 mg/L. The objective of this engineering design was to determine the location of shallow areas in the Karlsruhe aquifer where phytoremediation would be most suitable and to evaluate the effect of phytoremediation on attenuating nitrate-N concentrations. The determination of areas in the Karlsruhe aquifer where phytoremediation would be most effective was carried out through …

A Training Model: The Effects Of Mental Rehearsal On The Performance Of Elite Collegiate Nordic Skiers, Jennifer Lynn Conant Jan 2006

A Training Model: The Effects Of Mental Rehearsal On The Performance Of Elite Collegiate Nordic Skiers, Jennifer Lynn Conant

Master's Theses and Capstones

In today's competitive athletic world, the one common goal all athletes share is to win. The pressure to carry out this goal is staggering and as a result, athletes are training harder for longer hours and ultimately burning out. While there are numerous books that attempt to teach an athlete how to train physically for their sport, very few training programs teach them how to train mentally for their sport. A training program that does not include both a physical and mental aspect will fail.

This model introduces a training program where interested Nordic ski coaches can implement the training …

The purpose was to gain a deeper understanding of the issues associated with relationships among various socioeconomic characteristics, as well as to gain a more global understanding of the implications of the socioeconomic process as …

Moral Implications Of Darwinian Evolution For Human Reference Based In Christian Ethics: A Critical Analysis And Response To The "Moral Individualism" Of James Rachels, Stephen Bauer Jan 2006

Moral Implications Of Darwinian Evolution For Human Reference Based In Christian Ethics: A Critical Analysis And Response To The "Moral Individualism" Of James Rachels, Stephen Bauer

Dissertations

The topic. This dissertation explores and analyzes James Rachels's efforts to prove that Darwin's theory of evolution has catastrophic implications for traditional Christian ethics.

The purpose. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore and evaluate the question of whether or not protology affects ethics. In particular, I propose to distill the implications of evolutionary views of origins for ethics, mainly in reference to the issue of human preference over nature in ethics. I propose to disclose Rachels's understanding of the implications of evolution on human preference (greater protections for human beings over non-humans) in ethics (such as biblical-Christian ethics), …

Can We Teach Emotional Intelligence?, Kelly B.T. Chang Jan 2006

Can We Teach Emotional Intelligence?, Kelly B.T. Chang

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

Although there are hundreds of programs in thousands of schools that claim to enhance some aspect of emotional intelligence (EI), research has yet to show that it can in fact be enhanced. This study used proven behavioral self-modification techniques in semester-long Psychology of Adjustment courses to help undergraduate college students improve their EI. Students used the techniques in their own self-change projects, choosing EI topics such as assertiveness, empathy, self-regard, and emotion management. The course also included instruction on EI, as well as on theory and strategies from rational emotive therapy. Students in the treatment group (n=79) and control group …

Rapid Variability In The Japan/East Sea: Basin Oscillations, Internal Tides, And Near-Inertial Oscillations, Jae-Hun Park, D. Randolph Watts, Mark Wimbush, Jeffrey W. Book, Karen L. Tracey, Yongsheng Xu

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Many processes contribute to the variations of currents, sea surface height (SSH), and thermocline depth in marginal seas. Energetic examples range broadly over time scales from slow mesoscale and interannual variations to rapid basin oscillations, internal tides, and near-inertial oscillations. Our measurement array in the Japan/East Sea (JES) offered a special opportunity to study these processes simultaneously, revealing important interconnections among them.

Quantifying The Importance Of The Atmospheric Sink For Polychlorinated Dioxins And Furans Relative To Other Global Loss Processes, Rainer Lohmann, Elena Jurado, Jordi Dachs, Ulrike Lohmann, Kevin C. Jones Jan 2006

Quantifying The Importance Of The Atmospheric Sink For Polychlorinated Dioxins And Furans Relative To Other Global Loss Processes, Rainer Lohmann, Elena Jurado, Jordi Dachs, Ulrike Lohmann, Kevin C. Jones

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Previous attempts to establish global mass balances for polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) have focused on the terrestrial sink, thereby neglecting deposition to the oceans and atmospheric losses. In this study, the atmospheric sink of polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) was calculated on the basis of their presence in soils. OH radical ([OH]) depletion reactions compete with atmospheric deposition fluxes for the fate of atmospheric PCDD/Fs. Three different steady state scenarios were considered: scenario A was a one‐box atmosphere with globally averaged [OH], temperature (T), atmospheric lifetime (tlife), and a constant gas‐particle partitioning (Φ); in scenario B, [OH], …

Biological Formation Of Ethane And Propane In The Deep Marine Subsurface, Kai-Uwe Hinrichs, John M. Hayes, Wolfgang Bach, Arthur J. Spivack, Laura R. Hmelo, Nils G. Holm, Carl G. Johnson, Sean P. Sylva Jan 2006

Biological Formation Of Ethane And Propane In The Deep Marine Subsurface, Kai-Uwe Hinrichs, John M. Hayes, Wolfgang Bach, Arthur J. Spivack, Laura R. Hmelo, Nils G. Holm, Carl G. Johnson, Sean P. Sylva

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Concentrations and isotopic compositions of ethane and propane in cold, deeply buried sediments from the southeastern Pacific are best explained by microbial production of these gases in situ. Reduction of acetate to ethane provides one feasible mechanism. Propane is enriched in 13C relative to ethane. The amount is consistent with derivation of the third C from inorganic carbon dissolved in sedimentary pore waters. At typical sedimentary conditions, the reactions yield free energy sufficient for growth. Relationships with competing processes are governed mainly by the abundance of H2. Production of C2 and C3 hydrocarbons in …

Data Warehousing And Decision Making In Higher Education In The United States, David Lester Heise Jan 2006

Data Warehousing And Decision Making In Higher Education In The United States, David Lester Heise

Dissertations

Problem. Compared to the business world, higher education has a lower level of acceptance and a lower rate of adoption of data warehousing for decision making. Studies into the way data warehouses are used in higher education and the extent to which they are used are hard to find. Accordingly, this research examines the use of data warehousing in higher education and its role in decision making.

Method. Internet survey research method was used in this study. I asked college and university presidents to provide me with contact details of senior decision makers and technology managers from their institutions. …

W-Boson Production With Large Transverse Momentum At The Lhc, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Richard J. Gonsalves, Agustin Sabio Vera Jan 2006

W-Boson Production With Large Transverse Momentum At The Lhc, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Richard J. Gonsalves, Agustin Sabio Vera

Faculty Articles

We study W-boson production with large transverse momentum, QT, in pp collisions at the LHC. We calculate the complete NLO corrections and the soft-gluon NNLO corrections to the differential cross section. The NLO corrections are large but they do not reduce the scale dependence relative to LO, while the NNLO soft-gluon corrections, although small, significantly reduce the scale dependence and thus provide a more stable result.

Production Of Large Transverse Momentum W Bosons At The Tevatron, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Agustin Sabio Vera Jan 2006

Production Of Large Transverse Momentum W Bosons At The Tevatron, Nikolaos Kidonakis, Agustin Sabio Vera

Faculty Articles

We discuss the production of W bosons at large transverse momentum in p pbar collisions at the Tevatron Run I and II. W boson hadroproduction is a process of relevance in testing the Standard Model and in estimates of backgrounds to new physics. The next-to-leading order cross section in the region of large transverse momentum is dominated by threshold soft-gluon corrections which arise from incomplete cancellations near partonic threshold between graphs with real emission and virtual graphs due to the limited phase space available for real gluon emission. In this contribution it is shown how, by including next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) soft-gluon …

Good Faith, State Of Mind, And The Outer Boundaries Of Director Liability In Corporate Law, Christopher M. Bruner Jan 2006

Good Faith, State Of Mind, And The Outer Boundaries Of Director Liability In Corporate Law, Christopher M. Bruner

Scholarly Works

The Delaware General Corporation Law was amended in 1986 to permit shareholder-approved exculpatory charter provisions shielding corporate directors from monetary liability for certain fiduciary duty breaches not including (among other things) breaches of the duty of loyalty and acts not in good faith. This article examines the development of corporate fiduciary duty doctrine in Delaware leading up to and following this statutory amendment, focusing particularly on the Delaware courts' evolving conception of the meaning anddoctrinal status of the good faith concept employed in recent cases to permit a non-exculpable cause ofaction for conscious nonfeasance.

The article argues that Delaware's good …

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Survey, Travis M. Trimble Jan 2006

Environmental Law, Eleventh Circuit Survey, Travis M. Trimble

Scholarly Works

In 2005 the Eleventh Circuit courts addressed issues of regulatory interpretation of the Clean Air Act (“CAA”); compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”) in connection with the development of wetlands; and a conflict between the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (“FEMA”) coastal flood insurance program and the Endangered Species Act (“ESA”). First, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals invalidated a rule of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management that exempted certain stack emissions that otherwise violated the State Implementation Plan under the CAA. Also, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama heard one of several …

Acl And God’S Call To Librarianship, Barbara Nelson Jan 2006

Acl And God’S Call To Librarianship, Barbara Nelson

The Christian Librarian

Many people have asked me how, as a librarian in a secular institution, I became so involved in ACL. I have been at Auburn University Libraries since 1978, but before that was at a Christian liberal arts college, now defunct. ACL has been part of my life since the early 70’s and, of all the professional organizations to which I have belonged, it is the one that has had the greatest effect on me personally.

The Christian Periodical Index, Acl’S Longest Service Project, Barbara Nelson

The Christian Librarian

When the Christian Librarians’ Fellowship (CLF) was first formed in 1956, those early librarians were not just focused on their own needs, but they were also concerned with the information needs of students at Christian institutions. Part of their earliest vision was the establishment of the Christian Periodical Index (CPI).And so began a project which continues to the present day. It has far exceeded anyone’s vision at the time if its creation. Who knew about the coming explosion of publishing – to say nothing about the Internet! Yet the mission of CPI – to provide access to English language articles …

The Impact Of The Christian Faith On Library Service, Stanford Terhune Jan 2006

The Impact Of The Christian Faith On Library Service, Stanford Terhune

The Christian Librarian

The library profession is in flux and uncertainty due to its lack of a well-founded philosophy of service. The Christian faith provides the necessary philosophical framework. Three implications follow from the application of a Christian worldview to library practice. First, Christian librarians should provide access to collections that will allow students to integrate faith and learning. Second, they should demonstrate love and concern for library users by offering diligent, humble service.Third, they should teach students the ethical use of information resources. Christianity has an impact on “library service” in three areas. First, the word library presumes a collection of library …

Politically Correct Science: Why Johnny Can’T Read Scientific Creationism, Bart J. Stinson Jan 2006

Politically Correct Science: Why Johnny Can’T Read Scientific Creationism, Bart J. Stinson

The Christian Librarian

The playing field is far from level in the contest between Evolutionism and Scientific Creationism. Science faculty with ambitions to move up to larger universities are unlikely to assign readings in Creation Science. Scientists who express doubts about Evolutionism are punished for straying from orthodoxy. Scientific publishers are generally unwilling to accept manuscripts from Creationist researchers and theorists. Secular review sources either neglect Creationist works altogether or are so uniformly hostile and dismissive that they are not useful for separating the wheat from the chaff. Unless librarians muster the integrity and professional diligence to collect robustly in Scientific Creationism, a …

Hail, No: Changing The Chief Justice, Edward T. Swaine Jan 2006

Hail, No: Changing The Chief Justice, Edward T. Swaine

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

How do we get a new chief justice? Traditionally, the President decides between nominating a newcomer and promoting a sitting associate justice, and places either nominee before the Senate for its advice and consent. But this is not constitutionally required, or at least not evidently so, and there is no better time to confront this fact. This short essay explains that Congress could develop a different mechanism for promoting justices without subjecting them to a second appointment - providing, for example, that the position would rotate among sitting justices based on seniority, or that the justices would elect a chief …

Being Touched By Music: A Phenomenological-Hermeneutical Approach To Understanding Tranformational Musical Experience, Kurt Kumler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the lived experience of being personally transformed by listening to music. The investigation started with an exploration of the literature that relates to the phenomenon of musical transformation, including natural-scientific research as well as ideas from musicology, ethnomusicology, psychology, literature, and philosophy. This research was designed to access the nuanced and subjective aspects of the phenomenon by attending to the experience as lived by the experiencer. The method was qualitative in nature, based on a phenomenological-hermeneutical methodology. Throughout the research process, the researcher maintained a reflexive stance, attending to assumptions and preconceptions held about the phenomenon. This …
