Probing Neutrino Mass Hierarchies And Phi(13) With Supernova Neutrinos, S. H. Chiu, T. K. Kuo
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We investigate the feasibility of probing the neutrino mass hierarchy and the mixing angle phi(13) with the neutrino burst from a future supernova. An inverse power-law density rho similar to r(n) with varying n is adopted in the analysis as the density profile of a typical core-collapse supernova. The survival probabilities of nu(e) and (nu) over bar (e) are shown to reduce to two-dimensional functions of n and phi(13). It is found that in the n-sin(2)phi(13) parameter space, the 3D plots of the probability functions exhibit highly nontrivial structures that are sensitive to the mass hierarchy, the mixing angle phi(13), …

Using data collected with the CLEO detector operating at the CESR e(+)e(-) collider at root s = 3.97-4.26 GeV, we investigate 15 charmonium decay modes of the psi(4040), psi(4160), and Y(4260) resonances. We confirm, at 11 sigma significance, the BABAR Y(4260)->pi(+)pi(-)J/psi discovery, make the first observation of Y(4260)->pi(0)pi(0)J/psi (5.1 sigma), and find the first evidence for Y(4260)-> K(+)K(-)J/psi (3.7 sigma). We measure e(+)e(-) cross sections at root s=4.26 GeV as sigma(pi(+)pi(-)J/psi)=58(-10)(+12)+/- 4 pb, sigma(pi(0)pi(0)J/psi)=23(-8)(+12)+/- 1 pb, and sigma(K(+)K(-)J/psi)=9(-5)(+9)+/- 1 pb, in which the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Upper limits are placed on other decay rates from …

Nonlinear Realization Of Supersymmetric Ads Space Isometries, T. E. Clark, S. T. Love
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The isometries of AdS(5) space and supersymmetric AdS(5)circle times S-1 space are nonlinearly realized on four-dimensional Minkowski space. The resultant effective actions in terms of the Nambu-Goldstone modes are constructed. The dilatonic mode governing the motion of the Minkowski space probe brane into the covolume of supersymmetric AdS(5) space is found to be unstable and the bulk of the AdS(5) space is unable to sustain the brane. No such instability appears in the nonsupersymmetric case.

The two-photon width of chi(c2)(P-3(2)) state of charmonium has been measured using 14.4 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) data taken at root s=9.46-11.30 GeV with the CLEO III detector. The gamma gamma-fusion reaction studied is e(+)e(-)-> e(+)e(-)gamma gamma, gamma gamma ->chi(c2)->gamma J/psi ->gamma e(+)e(-)(mu(+)mu(-)). We measure Gamma(gamma gamma)(chi(c2))B(chi(c2)->gamma J/psi)B(J/psi -> e(+)e(-)+mu(+)mu(-))=13.2 +/- 1.4(stat)+/- 1.1(syst) eV, and obtain Gamma(gamma gamma)(chi(c2))=559 +/- 57(stat)+/- 48(syst)+/- 36(br) eV. This result is in excellent agreement with the result of gamma gamma-fusion measurement by Belle and is consistent with that of the (p) over barp ->chi(c2)->gamma gamma measurement, when they are both …

Mojave: Monitoring Of Jets In Active Galactic Nuclei With Vlba Experiments. Ii. First-Epoch 15 Ghz Circular Polarization Results, D. C. Homan, M. L. Lister
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We report first-epoch circular polarization results for 133 active galactic nuclei in the MOJAVE program to monitor the structure and polarization of a flux-limited sample of extragalactic radio jets with the VLBA at 15 GHz. We found strong circular polarization (>= 0.3%) in approximately 15% of our sample. The circular polarization was usually associated with jet cores; however, we did find a few strong jet components to be circularly polarized. The levels of circular polarization were typically in the range of 0.3%-0.5% of the local Stokes I value. We found no strong correlations between fractional circular polarization of jet …

Due to the ubiquity of time series with long-range correlation in many areas of science and engineering, analysis and modeling of such data is an important problem. While the field seems to be mature, three major issues have not been satisfactorily resolved. (i) Many methods have been proposed to assess long-range correlation in time series. Under what circumstances do they yield consistent results? (ii) The mathematical theory of long-range correlation concerns the behavior of the correlation of the time series for very large times. A measured time series is finite, however. How can we relate the fractal scaling break at …
Piezoelectric Coupling, Phonons, And Tunneling Into A Quantum Hall Edge, S. Khlebnikov
Piezoelectric Coupling, Phonons, And Tunneling Into A Quantum Hall Edge, S. Khlebnikov
Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We show that the piezoelectric coupling to three-dimensional phonons in GaAs renormalizes the current-voltage exponent for tunneling of electrons into an incompressible quantum Hall edge. The leading correction is always negative, in agreement with experiments on the nu=1/3 state, and, depending on the precise value of the edge plasmon speed, can be as large as a few percent. We also discuss higher-order corrections, which determine the effect of the piezoelectric coupling in the extreme infrared limit.

We present the first experimental limits on high-q(2) contributions to charmless semileptonic B decays of the form expected from the weak annihilation (WA) decay mechanism. Such contributions could bias determinations of vertical bar V(ub)vertical bar from inclusive measurements of B -> X(u)l nu. Using a wide range of models based on available theoretical input we set a limit of Gamma(WA)/Gamma(b -> u)< 7.4% (90% confidence level) on the WA fraction, and assess the impact on previous inclusive determinations of vertical bar V(ub)vertical bar.

We determine the dielectron widths of the Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S) resonances with better than 2% precision by integrating the cross section of e(+)e(-)->Upsilon over the e(+)e(-) center-of-mass energy. Using e(+)e(-) energy scans of the Upsilon resonances at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring and measuring Upsilon production with the CLEO detector, we find dielectron widths of 1.252 +/- 0.004(sigma(stat))+/- 0.019(sigma(syst)) keV, 0.581 +/- 0.004 +/- 0.009 keV, and 0.413 +/- 0.004 +/- 0.006 keV for the Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S), respectively.

Using 281 pb(-1) of data collected with the CLEO-c detector, we report on first observations and measurements of Cabibbo-suppressed decays of D mesons in the following six decay modes: pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)pi(0), pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)pi(-)pi(0), pi(+)pi(0)pi(0), pi(+)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), eta pi(0), and omega pi(+)pi(-). Improved branching fraction measurements in eight other multipion decay modes are also presented. The measured D ->pi pi rates allow us to extract the ratio of isospin amplitudes A(Delta I=3/2)/A(Delta I=1/2)=0.420 +/- 0.014(stat)+/- 0.016(syst) and the strong phase shift of delta(I)=(86.4 +/- 2.8 +/- 3.3)degrees, which is quite large and now more precisely determined.

We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the TeV gamma-ray blazar Mrk 421 performed during 2002 December and 2003 January. These target of opportunity observations were initiated by the detection of X-ray and TeV gamma-ray flares with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the 10 m Whipple gamma-ray telescope. The campaign included observational coverage in the radio (University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory), optical (Boltwood, La Palma KVA 0.6 m; WIYN 0.9 m), X-ray (RXTE pointed telescopes), and TeV gamma-ray (Whipple and HEGRA) bands. At TeV energies, the observations revealed several flares …

We discuss the magnetic excitations of well-ordered stripe and checkerboard phases, including the high energy magnetic excitations of recent interest and possible connections to the "resonance peak" in cuprate superconductors. Using a suitably parametrized Heisenberg model and spin wave theory, we study a variety of magnetically ordered configurations, including vertical and diagonal site- and bond-centered stripes and simple checkerboards. We calculate the expected neutron scattering intensities as a function of energy and momentum. At zero frequency, the satellite peaks of even square-wave stripes are suppressed by as much as a factor of 34 below the intensity of the main incommensurate …

We present measurements of the inclusive branching fractions for the decays D+-> Xe+nu(e) and D-0 -> Xe+nu(e), using 281 pb(-1) of data collected on the psi(3770) resonance with the CLEO-c detector. We find B(D-0 -> Xe+nu(e))=(6.46 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.13)% and B(D+-> Xe+nu(e))=(16.13 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.33)%. Using the known D meson lifetimes, we obtain the ratio Gamma(+sl)(D)/Gamma(0sl)(D)=0.985 +/- 0.028 +/- 0.015, confirming isospin invariance at the level of 3%. The positron momentum spectra from D+ and D-0 have consistent shapes.

The effectiveness of the thermal coupling of ions and electrons in optically thin, hot accretion flows is investigated in a phenomenological approach. In the limit of complete coupling, we focus on the one-temperature accretion flows around black holes. Based on a global analysis, the results are compared with two-temperature accretion flow models and with the observations of black hole sources. Many features of one-and two-temperature solutions are quite similar. That is, hot one-temperature solutions are found to exist for mass flow rates less than a critical value, i.e.,. M less than or similar to 10 alpha(2)M(Edd), where M-Edd = L-Edd/c(2) …

We present a measurement of the branching fraction for the doubly-Cabibbo-suppressed decay D+-> K+pi(0), using 281 pb(-1) of data accumulated with the CLEO-c detector on the psi(3770) resonance. We find B(D+-> K+pi(0))=(2.28 +/- 0.36 +/- 0.15 +/- 0.08)x10(-4), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the last error is due to the uncertainty in the reference mode branching fraction.

Using 13.3 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collision data taken in the Upsilon(1S-4S) region with the CLEO III detector at the CESR collider, a search has been made for the new resonance Y(4260) recently reported by the BABAR Collaboration. The production of Y(4260) in initial state radiation (ISR), and its decay into pi(+)pi(-)J/psi, are confirmed. A good quality fit to our data is obtained with a single resonance. We determine M(Y(4260))=(4284(-16)(+17)(stat)+/- 4(syst)) MeV/c(2), Gamma(Y(4260))=(73(-25)(+39)(stat)+/- 5(syst)) MeV/c(2), and Gamma(ee)(Y(4260))xB(Y(4260)->pi(+)pi(-)J/psi)=(8.9(-3.1)(+3.9)(stat)+/- 1.8(syst)) eV/c(2).

In this paper, we discuss the measurement of charge collection in irradiated silicon pixel sensors and the comparison with a detailed simulation. The simulation implements a model of radiation damage by including two defect levels with opposite charge states and trapping of charge carriers. The modeling proves that a doubly peaked electric field generated by the two defect levels is necessary to describe the data and excludes a description based on acceptor defects uniformly distributed across the sensor bulk. In addition, the dependence of trap concentrations upon fluence is established by comparing the measured and simulated profiles at several fluences …

We present an improved measurement of the eta(') meson energy spectrum in Upsilon(1S) decays, using 1.2 fb(-1) of data taken at the Upsilon(1S) center-of-mass energy with the CLEO III detector. We compare our results with models of the eta(') gluonic form factor that have been suggested to explain the unexpectedly large B ->eta X-'(s) rate. Models based on perturbative QCD fail to fit the data for large eta(') energies, and thus an explanation outside the realm of the Standard Model or an improved understanding of nonperturbative QCD effects may be needed to account for this large rate.

The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reports measurements of azimuthal correlations of high transverse momentum (p(T)) charged hadrons in Au+Au collisions at higher p(T) than reported previously. As p(T) is increased, a narrow, back-to-back peak emerges above the decreasing background, providing a clear dijet signal for all collision centralities studied. Using these correlations, we perform a systematic study of dijet production and suppression in nuclear collisions, providing new constraints on the mechanisms underlying partonic energy loss in dense matter.

We present simultaneous multicolor infrared and optical photometry of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 during its short 2005 January outburst, supported by simultaneous X-ray observations. The variability is dominated by short timescales, similar to 10 s, although a weak superhump also appears to be present in the optical. The optical rapid variations, at least, are well correlated with those in X-rays. Infrared JHKs photometry, as in the previous outburst, exhibits especially large-amplitude variability. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of the variable infrared component can be fitted with a power law of slope alpha = -0.78 +/- 0.07, where …

We explore the long-standing discrepancy between an experimentally observed sudden onset of the excluded-volume effect in stiff chains [Murakami , Macromolecules 13, 345 (1980)] and much more gradual onset seen by Monte Carlo simulations of the persistent self-avoiding walk model. We find by using various simulations and real-space renormalization methods that, while models incorporating parallel-bond inhibition enhance the excluded-volume effect, they have little effect on the abruptness of its onset. We also observe that relaxational simulations, which include reptationlike motion can, however, lead to a sudden onset much like in the experimental observation.

We measure the inclusive branching fractions of charm mesons into three mesons with large s (s) over bar content, namely, the eta, eta(') and phi. Data were accumulated with the CLEO-c detector. For D-0 and D+ rates, we use 281 pb(-1) taken on the psi(3770) resonance, and for D-s(+) rates, we use 195 pb(-1) taken at 4170 MeV. We find that the production rates of these particles are larger in D-s(+) decays than in D-0 and D+ decays. The phi rate, in particular, is 15 times greater. These branching fractions can be used to measure B-s yields either at the …

We test whether or not the tau lepton manifests the same couplings as the mu lepton by investigating the relative decay rates in purely leptonic D+ meson decays. We use 281 pb(-1) of data accumulated at the psi(3770) resonance with the CLEO-c detector, to limit B(D+->tau(+)nu)< 2.1x10(-3) at 90% confidence level (C.L.), thus allowing us to place the first upper limit on the ratio R=Gamma(D+->tau(+)nu)/Gamma(D+->mu(+)nu). The ratio of R to the standard model expectation of 2.65 then is < 1.8 at 90% C.L., consistent with the prediction of lepton universality.

We present model independent measurements of the helicity basis form factors in the decay D+-> K-pi(+)e(+)nu(e) obtained from about 2 800 decays reconstructed from a 281 pb(-1) data sample collected at the psi(3770) center-of-mass energy with the CLEO-c detector. We confirm the existence of a previously observed spin-zero K-pi(+) component interfering with the (K) over bar (*0) amplitude. We see no evidence for additional d- or f-wave contributions.

Measurements of the production of forward pi(0) mesons from p+p and d+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV are reported. The p+p yield generally agrees with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The d+Au yield per binary collision is suppressed as eta increases, decreasing to similar to 30% of the p+p yield at =4.00, well below shadowing expectations. Exploratory measurements of azimuthal correlations of the forward pi(0) with charged hadrons at eta approximate to 0 show a recoil peak in p+p that is suppressed in d+Au at low pion energy. These observations are qualitatively consistent with a saturation picture of …
