Objectives. We compared voluntary participation and comprehension of informed consent among individuals of African ancestry enrolled in similarly designed genetic studies of hypertension in the United States and Nigeria. Methods. Survey questionnaires were used to evaluate factors associated with voluntariness (the number of people volunteering) and understanding of the study's genetic purpose. A total of 655 individuals (United States: 348; Nigeria: 307) were interviewed after participation in the genetic studies. Results. Most US respondents (99%), compared with 72% of Nigerian respondents, reported being told the study purpose. Fewer than half of the respondents at both sites reported that the study …

A Review Of Accelerated Test Models, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker Nov 2006

A Review Of Accelerated Test Models, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker

Faculty Publications

Engineers in the manufacturing industries have used accelerated test (AT) experiments for many decades. The purpose of AT experiments is to acquire reliability information quickly. Test units of a material, component, subsystem or entire systems are subjected to higher-than-usual levels of one or more accelerating variables such as temperature or stress. Then the AT results are used to predict life of the units at use conditions. The extrapolation is typically justified (correctly or incorrectly) on the basis of physically motivated models or a combination of empirical model fitting with a sufficient amount of previous experience in testing similar units. The …

English Language Learners And Technology: Applying Universal Design For Learning And The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol In The Evaluation Of Literacy Support Software, Susan M. Connolly Nov 2006

English Language Learners And Technology: Applying Universal Design For Learning And The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol In The Evaluation Of Literacy Support Software, Susan M. Connolly

All Graduate Projects

The population of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in U.S. schools has been steadily increasing. These students do not experience equal educational opportunity in U.S. secondary schools. CLD students need to develop English literacy as well as content knowledge to attain equal educational opportunity. Teachers of CLD students need techniques and tools which support CLD students in mastering the content expected of secondary school students while acquiring English literacy. The criteria for effective lesson design and delivery inherent in the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and the criteria for designing curriculum without barriers to access inherent in Universal Design …

Best Management Practices Used By Kytc For On-Site Erosion Control, David L. Allen, Sudhir Palle Nov 2006

Best Management Practices Used By Kytc For On-Site Erosion Control, David L. Allen, Sudhir Palle

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

New erosion control procedures (ECP) have recently been implemented by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). Previously, consultants and designers developed the ECP as a part of the design plans. In many cases these did not work in the field. The new procedures allow construction personnel to develop and implement their own ECPs on site.

This study conducted a survey of construction personnel in the KYTC to determine their level of familiarity with the new ECPs and to determine any issues that may have developed with the new procedures. The results of the survey concluded that most KYTC construction personnel were …

Enhancing Decision Analysis Models With Web Agents, Jeffrey M. Keisler, Wei Zhang Nov 2006

Enhancing Decision Analysis Models With Web Agents, Jeffrey M. Keisler, Wei Zhang

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

Decision analysis (DA) can be enhanced by taking advantage of vast, real-time data available from the World Wide Web (the Web). Human intensive DA models such as influence diagrams may be linked with electronic agents that actively utilize the Web to generate data. At the time of modeling, results of agent actions are treated as stochastic events. Probability distributions are assessed conditioned on the range of outcomes for these events. When the DA model is evaluated the agent performs actions defined by the model in terms of the state of nature. Structuring links for these models presents technical challenges including …

Distributed Resource Allocation And Scheduling In Ofdma Wireless Networks, Xiangping Qin, Randall Berry Nov 2006

Distributed Resource Allocation And Scheduling In Ofdma Wireless Networks, Xiangping Qin, Randall Berry

Conference Proceedings

In this paper we develop distributed resource allocation and scheduling algorithms for the uplink of an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) wireless network. We consider a time-slotted model, where in each time-slot the users are assigned to subchannels consisting of groups of OFDM tones. Each user can also allocate its transmission power among the subchannels it is assigned. We consider distributed algorithms for accomplishing this, where each user’s actions depend only on knowledge of their own channel gains. Assuming a collision model for each subchannel, we characterize an optimal policy which maximizes the system throughput and also give a …

Appellate Review Of Discovery Orders In Federal Court: A Suggested Approach For Handling Privilege Claims, Cassandra Burke Robertson Nov 2006

Appellate Review Of Discovery Orders In Federal Court: A Suggested Approach For Handling Privilege Claims, Cassandra Burke Robertson

Washington Law Review

The federal circuit courts of appeals have generally recognized that a party suffers real hardship when the district court erroneously orders it to disclose privileged information. Review of the disclosure order after final judgment is usually an insufficient remedy; once the information has been disclosed, it can never again be fully confidential. Consequently, the courts have struggled to provide a mechanism by which such orders can be immediately appealed. However, privilege orders presenting novel questions of law or issues of first impression do not clearly fit within the doctrinal requirements of the most common methods of interlocutory review. Appellate courts …

Ahmadi Women Reconciling Faith With Vulnerable Reality Through Education, Huma Ahmed-Ghosh Nov 2006

Ahmadi Women Reconciling Faith With Vulnerable Reality Through Education, Huma Ahmed-Ghosh

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper presents the perceptions, attitudes and views of a group of Ahmadi women in Southern California through the eyes of their local leader. The specific focus is on ways in which Ahmadi women engage in cultural/religious community building within a racially and ethnically hostile environment since 9/11. Of particular concern are ways in which gender norms are reflected in Ahmadi women’s push toward formal and cultural education in their efforts to maintain their faith, culture and sense of community as they interface with the broader U.S. society. Given the current anti-Islamic climate in the U.S., the Ahmadis offer an …

Interaction Between Objective And Subjective Occupational Conditions Affecting Physical Health Of Women Workers, Jinky Leilanie Lu

Journal of International Women's Studies

This is an investigation on the interaction between the subjective and objective occupational conditions in affecting the overall health of women workers in industries that have accommodated information technology. The sample consisted of 23 establishments and 630 women respondents. Results show that the most prevalent issues among workers in the electronics industry included the need to upgrade skills, repetitive and fast paced work, pressure at work, and work that entailed both physically and mentally demanding tasks. It was found that the overall good physical health of the workers was affected by these factors: overtime, mental work, close monitoring, medium industries, …

Women, Words And War: Explaining 9/11 And Justifying U.S. Military Action In Afghanistan And Iraq, Nancy W. Jabbra Nov 2006

Women, Words And War: Explaining 9/11 And Justifying U.S. Military Action In Afghanistan And Iraq, Nancy W. Jabbra

Journal of International Women's Studies

Texts and images in the print media, outdoor advertisements, and on the Internet form the primary source material for this article. The Bush administration and the American media, drawing upon well-worn traditions of representation, contrasted American women and Muslim/Middle Eastern women, American and Middle Eastern male sexuality, and the moral qualities (good versus evil) of American and Middle Eastern people. They used those contrasts to explain 9/11 and legitimize war in Afghanistan and Iraq. 9/11 was simply explained through a contrast between American innocence and Muslim savagery. For Afghanistan, the predominant trope was liberating Afghan women from the Taliban, or …

New Paradigm Of Inference Control With Trusted Computing, Yanjiang Yang, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng Nov 2006

New Paradigm Of Inference Control With Trusted Computing, Yanjiang Yang, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The database server is a crucial bottleneck in traditional inference control architecture, as it enforces highly computation-intensive auditing for all users who query the protected database. As a result, most auditing methods, though rigorously studied, can never be implemented in practice for protecting largescale real-world database systems. To shift this paradigm, we propose a new inference control architecture that will entrust inference control to each users platform, provided that the platform is equipped with trusted computing technology. The trusted computing technology is designed to attest the state of a users platform to the database server, so as to assure the …

Dcma: A Label-Switching Mac For Efficient Packet Forwarding In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Arup Acharya, Sachin Ganu, Archan Misra Nov 2006

Dcma: A Label-Switching Mac For Efficient Packet Forwarding In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Arup Acharya, Sachin Ganu, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper addresses the problem of efficient packet forwarding in a multihop, wireless "mesh" network. We present an efficient interface contained forwarding (ICF) architecture for a "wireless router," i.e., a forwarding node with a single wireless network interface card (NIC) in a multihop wireless network that allows a packet to be forwarded entirely within the NIC of the forwarding node without requiring per-packet intervention by the node's CPU. To effectively forward packets in a pipelined fashion without incurring the 802.11-related overheads of multiple independent channel accesses, we specify a slightly modified version of the 802.11 MAC, called data driven cut-through …

Cèsar Chàvez's Rhetorical Use Of Religious Symbols, Joseph Zompetti Nov 2006

Cèsar Chàvez's Rhetorical Use Of Religious Symbols, Joseph Zompetti

Faculty Publications - Communications

Cèsar Chàvez's has been studied and praised as one of the twentieth century's greatest orators. One of his strengths as a rhetor, however, has consistently been overlooked—his use of religious themes and images to identify and reach-out to his audience. This paper analyzes several speeches by Chavez to understand how he used religious themes and images. We find that the religious elements in Chàvez's rhetoric signify the use of particular strategies as well as how he embodied religious themes and principles in his everyday life

Auditing Executive Discretion, Mariano-Florentino Cuellar Nov 2006

Auditing Executive Discretion, Mariano-Florentino Cuellar

Notre Dame Law Review

Executive branch officials routinely make thousands of decisions affecting public security and welfare. While it is rare that such discretionary decisions are entirely immune from some kind of judicial review, the courts' role is often so circumscribed or deferential that in some domains the probability of uncovering problems through such review almost certainly falls close to zero. The resulting amount of executive discretion carries considerable risks along with rewards. Some discretionary decisions undoubtedly benefit from the speed and flexibility associated with limits on judicial review. Yet judicial review's evisceration as a tool to restrain certain forms of discretion also makes …

Low-Latency Broadcast In Multirate Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra, Junaid Qadir Nov 2006

Low-Latency Broadcast In Multirate Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra, Junaid Qadir

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a multirate wireless network, a node can dynamically adjust its link transmission rate by switching between different modulation schemes. In the current IEEE802.11a/b/g standards, this rate adjustment is defined for unicast traffic only. In this paper, we consider a wireless mesh network (WMN), where a node can dynamically adjust its link-layer multicast rates to its neighbors, and address the problem of realizing low-latency network-wide broadcast in such a mesh. We first show that the multirate broadcast problem is significantly different from the single-rate case. We will then present an algorithm for achieving low-latency broadcast in a multirate mesh which …
