Reinscribing The Revolution: Genre And The Problem Of National History In Early American Historical Novels, Joseph John Letter Jan 2006

Reinscribing The Revolution: Genre And The Problem Of National History In Early American Historical Novels, Joseph John Letter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines nine early historical novels of the Revolution that recover an important yet largely forgotten archive of American cultural history. In the years following the War of 1812 writers from the Revolution’s successor generation reinscribed the history of national origins through narratives of the Revolution that address issues left unresolved by the Revolutionary War and subsequent Constitutional debates; thus, the Revolution itself becomes an important and ubiquitous subject area for writers attempting to situate narratives of national history. These national allegories, consciously constructed as patriotic narratives, unconsciously “bring forth” figurations that represent the official nation’s Others, people excluded …

Mothers Grimm And Other House Held Tales, Holly Kay Streekstra Jan 2006

Mothers Grimm And Other House Held Tales, Holly Kay Streekstra

LSU Master's Theses

Mothers Grimm and Other House Held Tales is a body of work that uses fairy tale archetypes and narrative traditions to comment upon tensions and conflicts in sexual self-understanding. This is achieved through a reflection on attitudes that women adopt regarding their own sexuality. Such a reflection is instigated through a presentation of prominent cultural archetypes that exist, no longer as received ideas, but as a bold and entertaining expression of how sex can change our attitude towards those ideas that we often take for granted. Through an assemblage of objects and video, this body of work evokes a domestic …

Characterization Of Equine Pulmonary Endothelin Receptors In Health And Disease, Sumanth Polikepahad Jan 2006

Characterization Of Equine Pulmonary Endothelin Receptors In Health And Disease, Sumanth Polikepahad

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) has been implicated in allergic type of respiratory inflammatory diseases in various species of animals including horses. This peptide elicits its actions by acting through endothelin-A (ET-A) and endothelin-B (ET-B) receptor sub-types. In this project, we have hypothesized that endothelin receptors (both ET-A and ET-B) are altered in terms of affinity and expression, in the lungs of summer pasture-associated obstructive pulmonary disease (SPAOPD)-affected horses. Objective of this dissertation was to determine the alterations in the affinity and expression of endothelin receptors in the lungs of healthy and SPAOPD-affected horses. To pursue our hypothesis, we have employed pharmacological, immunohistochemical …

Is Attention Unitary Or Divisible By Modality?, Sharon Diane Lynn Jan 2006

Is Attention Unitary Or Divisible By Modality?, Sharon Diane Lynn

LSU Master's Theses

Using the attentional network task (ANT) developed by Fan et al. (2002) and a modification of this task, the development of selective attention in a bimodal (auditory and visual) task is measured and compared to the results and development of the visual version of the task. The theoretical purpose of the study was to determine whether the attentional mechanism involved in this task is organized as a single mechanism or into modality-specific mechanisms. It was shown that adults needed specific instructions to efficiently use the auditory spatial warning cues but instructions were not required for efficient use of visual spatial …

Considering Blackness In George A. Romero's Night Of The Living Dead: An Historical Exploration, Jennifer Whitney Dotson Jan 2006

Considering Blackness In George A. Romero's Night Of The Living Dead: An Historical Exploration, Jennifer Whitney Dotson

LSU Master's Theses

When George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead was released in 1968, the independent black and white zombie film stunned American moviegoers. Having assaulted the audience with a new level of violence-laden gore, Night of the Living Dead received much attention from both popular and critical audiences, with the former rushing to theaters to see the film over and over and the latter almost universally panning the film for its poor taste and gratuitous violence. Since its release, however, Night of the Living Dead has become one of the most written about horror films in American history, with critics …

Aerobic Degradation Assessment For The Fungicide Bas 505 Using Batch And Intact Soil Core Methodologies, Jason Allan Mcdonald Jan 2006

Aerobic Degradation Assessment For The Fungicide Bas 505 Using Batch And Intact Soil Core Methodologies, Jason Allan Mcdonald

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although registration protocol stipulates that pesticide degradation be quantified using homogeneous soil, research suggests that degradation in intact soil may give results more consistent with field data. This project examined degradation of the turf and cereal fungicide BAS 505 [N-methyl-(E)-2-methoxyamino-2-(2-((2,5-dimethylphenoxy)methyl)phenyl) acetamide]. Yearlong and four-month-long incubation studies compared degradation rates in intact cores and homogeneous (batch) samples of Ruston fine sandy loam (fine-loamy, siliceous, thermic Typic Paleudults) soil. Recovery of BAS 505 in methanol extracts was measured 12 times over the 360 d incubation by HPLC-LSC analysis, and declined to 36 % and 57 % of the amount applied in cores …

Performing Citizenship: Tensions In The Creation Of The Citizen Image On Stage And Screen, John William Wright Jan 2006

Performing Citizenship: Tensions In The Creation Of The Citizen Image On Stage And Screen, John William Wright

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

What does it mean to be a “citizen” of the United States? In the simplest of terms, citizenship is a limited position of identity, relegated to a narrow definition of legal and geographical position for an individual. But to be a “citizen” in America means far more than that – it becomes an accepted image of our collective identity which seeks an historical and political supremacy that allows America, and its citizens, to claim ideological status over anyone who is not a part of that nationalistic frame. The citizen has, for us, become a set of understood rights and privileges, …

Phytoremediation Of A High Phosphorus Soil By Summer And Winter Hay Harvest, Veronica A. Ryan Jan 2006

Phytoremediation Of A High Phosphorus Soil By Summer And Winter Hay Harvest, Veronica A. Ryan

LSU Master's Theses

Phosphorus (P) loading into surface water from runoff and subsurface flow leaving soils subjected to long-term applications of poultry litter (PL) will degrade water quality. A practical way to reduce such loading is to remove soil P through plant uptake and harvest removal. The primary field study presented here examined the effectiveness of hay harvest utilizing a double-cropped system - perennial warm-season forage grass, common bermudagrass (CB; Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.), overseeded with annual ryegrass (ARG; Lolium multiflorum Lam.), a cool-season forage, in reducing soil P from a Ruston fine-sandy loam impacted by PL amendments. A secondary field study similarly …

Spatial Distribution Of Heavy Metals In Louisiana Sediments And Study Of Factors Impacting The Concentrations, Suniti Bhattarai

LSU Master's Theses

To identify the sites with elevated metal concentrations and factors impacting the concentrations, we studied 128 observations on heavy metals collected from the four inch deep sediments in Louisiana lakes and rivers. Use of Fe as a normalizing factor to interpret the site of metal enrichment was justified based on its high correlation with other heavy metals. The regression coefficients of metal/Fe came out to be significant for all the metals in both level and log versions. For the metals, where prediction exceeded upper 95% confidence interval, we mapped the site with factors such as number of industries located within …

A Neural Network Model For Classification Of Coastal Wetlands Vegetation Structure With Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-Radiometer (Modis) Data, Evaristo Joseph Liwa

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mapping coastal marshes is an important component in the management of coastal environments. Classification of marshes using remote sensing data has traditionally been performed by employing either parametric supervised classification algorithms or unsupervised classification algorithms. The implementation of these conversional classification methods is based on the underlying distributions concerning the probability density functions (PDF). Neural networks provide a practical approach to this classification because they are essentially non-parametric data transformations that are not restricted by any underlying assumptions. The major objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of neural networks using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) data to …

"Nos Frères D'Outre-Golfe": Spiritualism, Vodou And The Mimetic Literatures Of Haiti And Louisiana, Jean-Marc Allard Duplantier Jan 2006

"Nos Frères D'Outre-Golfe": Spiritualism, Vodou And The Mimetic Literatures Of Haiti And Louisiana, Jean-Marc Allard Duplantier

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The nineteenth-century Francophone literatures of Haiti and Louisiana are often dismissed as pale imitations of literary trends in metropolitan France. This study revisits these literatures and explores how Creole writers used borrowed ideas and imitated styles to assemble "relational" Creole identities. Two interrelated spiritual practices-the mid-century craze for "table turning" commonly known as modern Spiritualism, and the syncretistic New World religion Vodou-structured these writers' mimetic methods, enabling them to speak as, and thereby subvert the hegemony of, their cultural forebears. In France, the mid-century interest in Spiritualism provided French fantastic literature with a useful system for producing the many "revenants" …

Use Of Polyhydroxyalkanoates For Denitrification In Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, Maria Teresa Gutierrez-Wing Jan 2006

Use Of Polyhydroxyalkanoates For Denitrification In Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, Maria Teresa Gutierrez-Wing

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Increasing demand of aquacultural products is driving the industry toward more intensive culture practices. Aquacultural operations are constrained by limitations on the availability high quality waters and regulatory pressures on the discharges. Recirculating systems can address these issues by reducing the amount of water required in the operation. Closed systems are especially suited where biosecurity is important. In closed systems, nitrate accumulates, limiting the time the water can be reused. In marine inland systems, water reuse reduces the cost of salt for make up water. To increase the water reuse time, some form of nitrate removal process must be incorporated …

Studies Of Pathogenesis-Related Proteins In The Strawberry Plant: Partial Purification Of A Chitinase-Containing Protein Complex And Analysis Of An Osmotin-Like Protein Gene, Yuhua Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Plant chitinases and osmotin-like proteins (OLPs) are both pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins, which are implicated in plant responses to pathogen attacks and environmental stresses. In this dissertation, a chitinase-containing protein complex was purified to near homogeneity from strawberry leaf extracts. This protein complex contained at least five different chitinase molecules as revealed by activity gel assays. A previous study showed that winter rye leaves contain seven protein complexes, which consist of various combinations of a chitinase, two glucanase-like proteins (GLPs) and a thaumatin-like protein (TLP). Western blot analysis of the strawberry chitinase complex, however, did not detect the presence of any …

The Business Dynamics In Telecommunication Market Consolidation, George Amstad Jan 2006

The Business Dynamics In Telecommunication Market Consolidation, George Amstad

LSU Master's Theses

The Swiss telecommunication market is quite different from the markets in surrounding European countries. The Swiss Market is characterized by a very small number of competitors and relatively high and stable prices. The model in this thesis explains shows how the limited competition enables the mobile telecommunication service providers to keep prices up. This is due to a oligopoly market situation linked to complicated laws that discourage new competitors to join the Swiss market. Later in 2006, the Swiss federal council will pass the new televisor law, which will make it significantly easier to join the Swiss market. This will …
