Using High-Order Questioning To Investigate Marine Animal Phyla, Tanya Conrad Jan 2006

Using High-Order Questioning To Investigate Marine Animal Phyla, Tanya Conrad

Graduate Research Papers

Over seventy percent of the Earth is covered in ocean, yet we know more about distant planets than we do about this vast body of water or the mysterious creatures that live within. Marine Biology is the study of the billions of plants and animals that live in the sea. Today, our understanding of marine organisms has allowed us to develop new sources of food, medicine, and solutions to environmental problems. Unfortunately for students living in Iowa, offerings of this type of course are usually limited to coastal regions. However, in 2000, Hempstead High School, in Dubuque, Iowa, created a …

Empowering Families From The Start: Kindergarten Family Nights, Melissa M. Teggatz Jan 2006

Empowering Families From The Start: Kindergarten Family Nights, Melissa M. Teggatz

Graduate Research Papers

There are more two parent working families and single parent families in the 21st century than in any other time period in our history. With this increase in demands put on parents, their children's education is increasingly left to the teachers and faculty the children encounter at school. For children to receive the best education possible, families and educators must therefore work together. This research project examined ways to help families and kindergarten teachers meet the needs of children. One important way is through developing and implementing two developmentally appropriate, hands-on, family night events at a middle class school district …

Effect Of Economics On The Health Determinants Of Fruit And Vegetable Consumption, Dan Winder Jan 2006

Effect Of Economics On The Health Determinants Of Fruit And Vegetable Consumption, Dan Winder

Graduate Research Papers

The goal is to identify the market factors that cause produce consumption to increase and the indicators that cause consumption to decrease. Determining the relationship between each economic factor and produce intake will help explain the effect of economics on the health aspects of fruits and vegetable consumption. Economic indicators that cause fruit and vegetable consumption to increase can be said to have a positive effect on health, while factors that cause intake to fall can be said to have a negative effect on health.

Mcd And Magnetization Studies On Nifb/Nifz Minus Molybdenum Iron Protein From Azotobacter Vinelandii, Marcia S. Cotton

LSU Master's Theses

This study reports a characterization of the iron-sulfur clusters of the MoFe protein expressed by the nifBnifZ deletion strain of A. vinelandii. VT-MCD spectroscopic and magnetization analysis of as-isolated ΔnifBΔnifZ MoFe protein were undertaken. VT-MCD spectra of as-isolated ΔnifBΔnifZ MoFe protein contains bands remarkably similar to those seen in as-isolated ΔnifH MoFe protein, assigned to arise from an [4Fe-4S]+ cluster. The low-temperature magnetization curve of as-isolated ΔnifBΔnifZ MoFe protein reveals the MCD spectra bands stem from an S = ½ spin system with diamagnetic contributions of some other species. As-isolated ΔnifBΔnifZ MoFe protein is compared with as-isolated ΔnifH MoFe …

Cell Cycle Cyclin Expression Of Atrazine Treated Hepg2 Cells Using Western Blot Analysis, April Dawn Rand Jan 2006

Cell Cycle Cyclin Expression Of Atrazine Treated Hepg2 Cells Using Western Blot Analysis, April Dawn Rand

Honors Program Theses

Atrazine is one of the most widely used herbicides in the United States. It is frequently used for general weed control on both industrial and agricultural land. However, atrazine has been associated with many harmful non-target effects in animals and humans. Due to its prevalence in the environment, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEP A) has set the maximal contaminant level of atrazine in drinking water at 3 ppb (USEP A, 2003 ). One of the non-target effects of atrazine is slowed growth of both normal and immortalized human cells. Previous work from our lab demonstrated that exposing normal …

Effects Of Insectivorous Birds On Tree Growth In The Maurepas Swamp, David M. Fox Jan 2006

Effects Of Insectivorous Birds On Tree Growth In The Maurepas Swamp, David M. Fox

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal forests in Louisiana are in decline due to natural and human caused changes in the hydrology of the region. Baldcypress and water tupelo trees have been further stressed by caterpillar herbivory in recent decades. Regeneration of water tupelo is crucial for cavity creation for nesting habitat for secondary cavity nesting bird populations. Insectivorous birds have been shown to decrease insect-caused leaf damage on trees in other ecosystems. Two experiments examining effects of insectivorous birds on tree growth were conducted in degraded areas of the Maurepas Swamp in southeastern Louisiana. In the first experiment, nest boxes were added to study …

Sensory Characteristics Of Salt Substitute Containing L-Arginine, Pamarin Waimaleongora-Ek Jan 2006

Sensory Characteristics Of Salt Substitute Containing L-Arginine, Pamarin Waimaleongora-Ek

LSU Master's Theses

Dietary salt restriction is a common approach recommended by physicians in the treatment and prevention of hypertension. Salt substitute is a potential alternative. The most popular salt substitute is KCl, having similar physical properties to NaCl. Because of the higher molecular weight of cations (K+), KCl imparts undesired bitterness and metallic aftertaste. L-arginine has been found to have the bitterness-suppression property. Therefore, it may be used in the mixture of salt substitutes. In the first study, NaCl and four salt substitute solutions consisting of KCl, NaCl, and L-arginine, were developed at 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% w/v. A discriminative test was …

Gallic Acid: Inhibiting Angiogenesis In Adipose Tissue, Andrew Thaxton Roberts Jan 2006

Gallic Acid: Inhibiting Angiogenesis In Adipose Tissue, Andrew Thaxton Roberts

LSU Master's Theses

Angiogenesis is the process of developing and elongating blood vessels. In obesity, angiogenesis controls the development of the adipose tissue, allowing it to expand as energy stores increase. When angiogenesis is blocked in rodent models, adipose tissue not only stops expanding, but regresses, proving a possible mechanism for weight loss. Nt, a Chinese herbal decoction, and gallic acid, an active antiangiogenic ingredient in Nt, were tested in clinical trials in combination for possible use as a supplement for weight loss. The Nt-gallic acid combination did not cause weight loss or a decrease in food intake in humans, principally due to …

Space-Time Block Coding For Multiple Transmit Antennas Over Time-Selective Fading Channels, Ioannis Erotokritou Jan 2006

Space-Time Block Coding For Multiple Transmit Antennas Over Time-Selective Fading Channels, Ioannis Erotokritou

LSU Master's Theses

The last decade we have witnessed an extraordinary growing interest in the field of wireless communications. Wireless industry has recently turned into a technology known as Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) to minimize errors and optimize data speed. This is done by using multiple transmit and receive antennas, as well as appropriate space-time block code techniques. Due the fact that time-selective fading channels exist, the assumption that the channel is being static over the length of the codeword does not apply in this thesis. The channel state varies over the number of signal intervals, and in such case the orthogonality of the …

The Effects Of The Herbicide Atrazine On Human Liver Cells, Erin R. Powell Jan 2006

The Effects Of The Herbicide Atrazine On Human Liver Cells, Erin R. Powell

Honors Program Theses

Atrazine is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the United States, in particular for maize crops. This herbicide is very effective against weeds. However, it has also been associated with many harmful health effects in non-target organisms such as amphibians and mammals. One of the non-target effects of atrazine may be to act as an endocrine disruptor in different cells. To study the endocrine system effects of atrazine in human cells, a human liver cell line (HepG2) was used. In this study, we determined the effects on growth of HepG2 cells after exposure to increasing concentrations of this …

Created Environments Voluntarily Colonized By Spartina Alterniflora In Coastal Louisiana, Han Xu Jan 2006

Created Environments Voluntarily Colonized By Spartina Alterniflora In Coastal Louisiana, Han Xu

LSU Master's Theses

The coastal wetlands play a central role in maintaining productivity of the Gulf of Mexico while protecting coastal regions during severe storms. To help offset the loss of coastal marsh, there is growing interest in the beneficial use of dredge spoil for reconstruction of eroded areas. Hydraulic dredges are routinely employed to maintain navigation and the unconsolidated sediments can be pumped considerable distances to create gently sloping wetland areas. Some areas of these reconstructed wetlands are rapidly colonized by Spartina alterniflora, the dominant vegetative species in saline areas under tidal influence. Some areas, however, fail to colonize despite favorable positions …

LSU Master's Theses

In the second half of the twentieth century, the Cajun language, which had been entirely oral for most of its history, began to emerge as a productive literary language. One of the prominent new authors of the period was Zachary Richard, also an important Cajun musician. One of his collections of poetry, Faire récolte (Les Éditions Perce-Neige, 1997), is translated here. This thesis also includes a translator's note that briefly explores the broad themes of the poems and the methods used in translating them.

The Loathsome And The Virtuous: An Examination Of Sleeping Beauty And Snow White In Literature And Film, Heather Marie Birk Jan 2006

The Loathsome And The Virtuous: An Examination Of Sleeping Beauty And Snow White In Literature And Film, Heather Marie Birk

Honors Program Theses

ln this analysis I look at the differences between written text and film fairy tales, and the extent to which they help children overcome moral complexities. There are two important ideas represented in written fairy tales that place fairy tales within a tradition of moral education for children. First, the relationship between prince, princess and the wicked fairy or queen resembles the relationship between Adam, Eve and Satan. This relationship is only visible in the written version of the tales, because it depends on the Princesses playing dominant roles as Eve played in Genesis. Second, the use of the Seven …

What Does Social Justice Require For The Public’S Health? Public Health Ethics And Policy Imperatives, Lawrence O. Gostin, Madison Powers

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Justice is so central to the mission of public health that it has been described as the field's core value. Our account of justice stresses the fair disbursement of common advantages and sharing of common burdens. It captures the twin moral impulses that animate public health: to advance human well-being by improving health and to do so particularly by focusing on the needs of the most disadvantaged. This commentary explores how social justice sheds light on major ongoing controversies in the field, and it provides examples of the kinds of policies that public health agencies guided by a robust conception …
