A Landscape Approach To Bighorn Sheep Rock Art In The Dolores River Valley, Amanda M. Davey Jan 2006

A Landscape Approach To Bighorn Sheep Rock Art In The Dolores River Valley, Amanda M. Davey

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper attempts to analyze the location of bighorn sheep rock art in the Dolores River Valley in relation to projected areas of bighorn sheep habitat. A landscape approach is applied in order to gain a better understanding of the reasons behind the placement of bighorn rock art presently found on the current landscape. Twenty six rock art sites recorded by Gay Ives in the Dolores River Valley of Southwestern Colorado will be analyzed in the current study. Eleven bighorn sheep elements were identified by Ives at four separate rock art sites. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is employed to conduct …

There Is No Alternative To Tribalism, Denny Gayton Jan 2006

There Is No Alternative To Tribalism, Denny Gayton

Nebraska Anthropologist

Tribal traditions and the western scientific tradition are not investigated for congruency or correspondences. The tribal order of the universe concerns itself with wholeness while the western order, in comparison, is fragmented The tribal order is introduced first through correspondences alluding to physics. The feature that both the tribal order and the western order, through modern physics, will speak to is reductionistic-externalistic mechanism The relativity and quantum theories illustrate inadequacy with mechanism; a feature central to the tribal Lakota order, wakan, is used to bring both theories together through its internal, qualitative nature. The tribal order clearly has no issues …

Lakota Struggles For Cultural Survival: History, Health, And Reservation Life, Benjamin Jewell Jan 2006

Lakota Struggles For Cultural Survival: History, Health, And Reservation Life, Benjamin Jewell

Nebraska Anthropologist

The effects of alcohol use on Pine Ridge are epidemic and have had a devastating impact on the current status of the residents. The historic effect of u.s. colonial relations with the Lakota has engendered a system of dependency, making the transition from an independent trading economy to capitalism difficult. This paper is an attempt to investigate the current life of Pine Ridge residents and relate how the past has shaped the present through a successful attempt by the u.s. to bring an end to the life-ways of the Lakota. This analysis will include a detailed statement of the economic …

You Can Take It With You: Archaeology At The Beaver Creek Trail Crossing, Nolan Johnson Jan 2006

You Can Take It With You: Archaeology At The Beaver Creek Trail Crossing, Nolan Johnson

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Beaver Creek Trail Crossing Site was a fording location along the Nebraska City Cut-Off of the Oregon and California Trail, occupied from 1862 through 1871. The site was situated on both creek banks and contained a road ranch. saloon, store, and post office. Geophysical data showed anomalies corresponding to irregularities in the ground surface. While excavation units placed at these locations revealed few remnants of in situ foundations, generalized scatters of mortar, nails, and chinking or filler stones were recorded. Given the lack of timber or stone near the site, this pattern suggests most of building materials were salvaged. …

Feasting At Nestor's Palace At Pylos, Deanna L. Wesolowski Jan 2006

Feasting At Nestor's Palace At Pylos, Deanna L. Wesolowski

Nebraska Anthropologist

Early in the excavation of Nestor's palace at Pylos it was apparent that the palace was a place of large-scale communal feasting. Both Homer's literary account of Nestor ' sf east sf rom the Odyssey and the overwhelming number of kylikes in the pantry rooms provided obvious evidence of this. It has only been later, after the decipherment of Linear B and reconstruction of the megaron frescoes that the purposes, reasons, and organization of the feasts began to be explored. This paper will examine the physical remains, specifically the pottery from the pantries, the wine magazine, and the faunal evidence …

Conceptions Of Humor: Lakota (Sioux), Koestlerian, And Computational, Benjamin Grant Purzycki Jan 2006

Conceptions Of Humor: Lakota (Sioux), Koestlerian, And Computational, Benjamin Grant Purzycki

Nebraska Anthropologist

The Lakota (Sioux) sacred clowns (heyoka) of traditional religious practice offer a glimpse of the clown phenomenon found in many of the world's indigenous traditions. By illustrating the unified Lakota and Western conceptions of humor, the logic of how particular entities of the natural environment are understood as relatives according to Lakota thought is brought to light in hopes of introducing the idea that such insights were not only statements or observations about the external, physical world, but also about the internal or mental world.

Human Rights And Homo-Sectuals: The International Politics Of Sexuality, Religion, And Law, Jeffrey A. Redding Jan 2006

Human Rights And Homo-Sectuals: The International Politics Of Sexuality, Religion, And Law, Jeffrey A. Redding

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

This article argues that international human rights law does not adequately respect people's plural religious and sexual identities and, moreover, is working to ignore the ways in which both governments and individuals are increasingly reconfiguring "sexual persecution" as "religious persecution." The article uses case-studies from both and to demonstrate not only how state persecution of gays, lesbians, and homosexuals is often steeped in claims of religiosity, but also how increasing numbers of people from around the world are challenging traditional religious practices which denigrate gayness and homosexuality. Thus, when such "homo-sectuals" - to use a neologism - are persecuted, they …

Eastern Visions, Western Voices: A Sermon On Love In The Valley Of Law, John W. Teeter Jr Jan 2006

Eastern Visions, Western Voices: A Sermon On Love In The Valley Of Law, John W. Teeter Jr

Faculty Articles

The transition from law student to seasoned attorney can be prolonged and stressful. The evolution can be painfully dispiriting, but there are ways to transform a potentially grueling struggle for sustenance into a genuine labor of love. The sources stem from divergent roots, both Eastern—Buddhist with pinches of Hindu—and Western—ranging from Platonic to perhaps the moronic. Eastern visions and Western voices may be a catalyst in spawning ideas on creating joy and fulfillment in the valley of law.

Moving from law student to practitioner is an odyssey, both perplexing and potentially fatal. Becoming a lawyer in fact as well as …

Some Things Are Worth Dying For, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2006

Some Things Are Worth Dying For, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In April of 1992, Kristen French, a 15 year-old girl was kidnapped and held as a sex slave in suburban Ontario. For two days she was raped and threatened with death. Surprisingly, on the third day she grew defiant, refusing to perform a particular sexual act even after she was shown pre-recorded videotape of her predecessor, Leslie, being strangled by her captors with an electrical cord. (Leslie's corpse was sawn into 10 pieces before disposal.) A record of Kristen's suffering was preserved on video tape too. Of interest is Kristen's dying claim: "Some things are worth dying for."

Kristen's story …

Too Broke To Hire An Attorney - How To Conduct Basic Legal Research In A Law Library, Mike Martinez Jr, Michael P. Forrest Jan 2006

Too Broke To Hire An Attorney - How To Conduct Basic Legal Research In A Law Library, Mike Martinez Jr, Michael P. Forrest

Faculty Articles

This article targets as its audience pro se patrons - individuals who cannot afford counsel and need to conduct their own legal research. The poor and disenfranchised have historically had difficulty getting equal access to justice. The cause is often the fact that they cannot afford legal representation. This could lead to exclusion from the legal process. A solution might be self-representation, which presents its own difficulties, as the pro se litigant will likely need to access resources in a law library.

Information Assurance Through Binary Vulnerability Auditing, William B. Kimball, Saverio Perugini Jan 2006

Information Assurance Through Binary Vulnerability Auditing, William B. Kimball, Saverio Perugini

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The goal of this research is to develop improved methods of discovering vulnerabilities in software. A large volume of software, from the most frequently used programs on a desktop computer, such as web browsers, e-mail programs, and word processing applications, to mission-critical services for the space shuttle, is unintentionally vulnerable to attacks and thus insecure. By seeking to improve the identification of vulnerabilities in software, the security community can save the time and money necessary to restore compromised computer systems. In addition, this research is imperative to activities of national security such as counterterrorism. The current approach involves a systematic …

Effects Of Double Injections Of Pgf_{2}\Alpha At Different Intervals On Some Reproductive Traits In Tuj Ewes, Nalan Bayşu Sözbi̇li̇r, Şaban Maraşli, Yavuz Öztürkler, Ömer Uçar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study investigated the effects of double injections of PGF_{2}\alpha at different intervals (10 vs. 14 days) on plasma progesterone levels, oestrus and lambing rates in Tuj ewes during the breeding season. Thirty clinically healthy mature ewes were assigned randomly into 2 experimental groups: 2 injections of 125 µg of Cloprostenol (a PGF_{2}\alpha analogue) at either 10 (Group I, n = 15) or 14 day (Group II, n = 15) intervals. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein on the day of the second injection of PGF_{2}\alpha, 4 days post-injection and 16 days after insemination to determine plasma …

Effects Of Feeding Frequency On Growth, Feed Consumption, And Body Composition In Juvenile Turbot (Psetta Maxima Linnaeus, 1758) At Low Temperature, Ali̇ Türker

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Juvenile turbot Psetta maxima (Linnaeus, 1758) (15.23 ± 2.99 g) were fed to satiation with a commercial extruded feed over a 60-day period. Feeding regimens were twice a day (TD), every other day (EOD), and 2-day intervals (TDI). Fish were kept in seawater (18 ppt) at 5-7.5 °C from January 21 to March 23, 2004. Feed conversion rate (FCR) and the protein efficiency ratios (PER) were within the ranges of 1.12-1.14 and 2.26-2.29, respectively. While the maximum relative growth rate (RGR), weight gain, and specific growth rate (SGR) were recorded in the TD group, they were lower in the EOD …

Distribution Of An Invasive Fish Species, Pseudorasbora Parva (Temminck & Schlegel, 1846) In Turkey, Fi̇tnat Güler Ekmekçi̇, Şeri̇fe Gülsün Kirankaya

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Pseudorasbora parva is a small cyprinid fish native to East Asia. In 1982, the occurrence of this species was first recorded from the Thrace region of Turkey and in 1996, from Aksu Stream. In this study, specimens collected from various localities in central and west Anatolia, such as the Sakarya River Basin, Kızılırmak River Basin, and Bakırçay River Basin, between 1999 and 2004, were used to show the rapid invasion of P. parva in Turkish freshwater systems. This species is regarded as a pest and the rapid P. parva invasion throughout Anatolia could pose a threat to the diversity of …

Articulating Trade Offs: The Political Economy Of State Action Immunity, Hillary Greene Jan 2006

Articulating Trade Offs: The Political Economy Of State Action Immunity, Hillary Greene

Faculty Articles and Papers

Antitrust uses economic analysis to assess various trade-offs involving efficiency. Even assuming that a competition matter implicates purely economic matters it can be exceedingly difficult to determine and measure all the relevant factors, assign them proper weights, decide on the appropriate time frames, assess the pertinent interactions, and conduct the trade-off calculations. Not surprisingly, different members of the antitrust community often take vastly differing positions regarding the economic consequences of a particular antitrust doctrine as well as the significance of those consequences. When potentially anti-competitive conduct occurs in the context of state regulation, the challenge to achieving a sensible accommodation …

Toward Rational Regulation Of Genetically Modified Food, Gregory N. Mandel Jan 2006

Toward Rational Regulation Of Genetically Modified Food, Gregory N. Mandel

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

The regulation of genetically modified food pursuant to statutes enacted decades prior to the advent of biotechnology has created a regulatory system that unnecessarily exposes society and the environment to adverse risks of biotechnology and introduces numerous inefficiencies into the regulatory system. These risks and inefficiencies include gaps in regulation, duplicative and inconsistent regulation, unnecessary regulatory expense, agencies acting outside their areas of expertise, and unnecessary increases in the cost of and delay in the development and commercialization of new biotechnology products. This Article details how to achieve a comprehensive, efficient, and scientifically rigorous regulatory system for genetically modified food. …
