Ichthyofaunal Assemblages In Three Approximate But Ecologically Diverse Streams In Clark County, Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, Scott Jordan, Lesley Self, Henry W. Robison

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Three tributaries to the Ouachita River in eastern Clark County, Arkansas, empty into the river within a collective distance of about 9 km. The streams drain basins derived from the Wilcox formation, partially overlain by terrace and alluvial deposits. Despite their proximity, the streams are very different: L'Eau Frais has a gravel substrate and was recognized by the French as a cool water stream, Tupelo Creek is a bottomland stream from which numerous Water Tupelo (Nyssa aquatica) emerge, and Saline Bayou was named due to its marked salinity. We studied the assemblages of fishes in these 3 very different drainages …

Backdoor Federalization, Samuel Issacharoff, Catherine M. Sharkey Jan 2006

Backdoor Federalization, Samuel Issacharoff, Catherine M. Sharkey

Faculty Articles

Two primary arguments are advanced for the contemporary functional importance of federalist constraints on centralized political power. The first is captured in Justice Brandeis's famous invocation of the states as the laboratories of democracy in which "a single courageous State" may blaze new paths by trying "novel social and economic experiments." The second ties the smaller, decentralized scale of subnational units to a more robust democratic accountability, by which "government is brought closer to the people, and democratic ideals are more fully realized." This Article is largely about circumstances in which these two arguments for federalism fail. The question that …

Salinity Controls Phytoplankton Response To Nutrient Enrichment In The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Usa, Amy M. Marcarelli, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, O. Griset Jan 2006

Salinity Controls Phytoplankton Response To Nutrient Enrichment In The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Usa, Amy M. Marcarelli, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, O. Griset

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

To examine how salinity and nutrient supply interact to control phytoplankton community composition, nutrient limitation, and dinitrogen (N2) fixation rates in the Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA), we conducted a series of bioassay experiments with plankton from both Gilbert Bay, where salinities are near 160 g·L–1, and Farmington Bay, where salinities range from 10 to 90 g·L–1. Six-day nutrient addition bioassay experiments showed that the extant phyto plankton communities in both bays were limited by nitrogen (N). However, in 28- to 30-day factorial bioassay experiments in which both salinities and nutrient supply were manipulated, phosphorus stimulated chlorophyll a as much …

Efficacy And Safety Of The Six-Dose Regimen Of Artemether-Lumefantrine In Pediatrics With Uncomplicated Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria: A Pooled Analysis Of Individual Patient Data, M. Makanga, Zul Premji, C. Falade, J. Karbwang, E.A. Mueller, K. Andriano, P. Hunt, P.I. De Palacios Jan 2006

Hunt, P.I. De Palacios

Pathology, East Africa

Patient data from eight clinical trials were pooled and analyzed to study the efficacy and safety of the six-dose versus four-dose regimen of artemether-lumefantrine (coartemether; Coartem) in children weighing 5-25 kg. A total of 544 patients with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria (six-dose: 343; four-dose: 201), matched for demographic and baseline characteristics and individual coartemether doses were included in the analysis. Analysis of day 28 cure rate based on the intention-to-treat and evaluable populations yielded corrected cure rates for the six-dose regimen of 93% and 96% compared with 61% and 76%, respectively, for the four-dose regimen (P < 0.0001 for both comparisons). Similarly high cure rates were achieved with the six-dose regimen in non-immune infants weighing as little as 5 kg. The six- and four-dose regimens were equally well tolerated. The main finding of this analysis is that the six-dose regimen of coartemether is safe and more efficacious than the four-dose regimen in children. Voluntarism And Volunteering, Richard Holtzman Jan 2006

Voluntarism And Volunteering, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

To engage in voluntarism, as the term is commonly understood today, is to freely offer support in the service of others. Defining the concept in such general terms, however, ignores a number of important factors, such as the motives leading individuals to choose such action, the means by which the activity occurs, and the broader implications of voluntarism for society. This chapter looks at voluntarism from a historical perspective to demonstrate the numerous and sometimes conflicting ways the concept has been understood. Recognizing voluntarism as a social issue requires examining it in the variety of historical contexts and settings that …

Enforced Tourists: American Women, Travel, And The ‘Far-Flung Fronts’ Of World War Ii, Judy Barrett Litoff

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

The exigencies of World War II resulted in a massive expansion of travel opportunities for American women, both civilian and military, that formed an essential ingredient of their wartime experience. As enforced tourists, the geographical centres and states of knowledge of American women were greatly expanded as they travelled to distant and remote areas, met new people, took on new jobs, encountered different cultures and ways of life, and established themselves and their families in unknown locations. The far-reaching consequences of enforced wartime travel played an important role in transforming the way American women thought about themselves and their world, …

Protecting The Integrity Of Organic Food In The Face Of Genetic Engineering: The Case Of Roundup Ready Alfalfa, Kristina Joy Hubbard

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Genetically engineered (GE) seeds are central to the debates around agricultural biotechnology, and continue to be rapidly adopted across the globe. At the same time that GE crops increase in acreage, the organic market has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the American food industry. While biotechnology companies claim there is a successful “coexistence” of GE crop technologies and organic crops, many organic producers are already challenged by keeping unwanted GE traits out of their fields. Still, little attention has been given to the role of regulations in the face of organic contamination by genetically engineered material. This …

Protecting The Inner Environment: What Privacy Regulation Can Learn From Environmental Law, Dennis D. Hirsch

Georgia Law Review

This Article takes insights from the field of environmental law and applies them to the emerging area of privacy regulation. Professor Hirsch begins by showing that the information economy's negative impacts on personal privacy are analogous to the smokestack economy's harmful effects on the environment. He then identifies specific regulatory strategies pioneered in the environmental field and explains how to adapt them for use in protecting privacy

Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville Jan 2006

Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study was conducted to explore the social dimensions of wilderness fire management. I set out to answer the question what role does an individual’s attachment to place play in determining the acceptability of management actions directed towards fire? I feel that problems will arise if management agencies attempt to restore natural fire regimes to wilderness areas without accounting for the effects on meanings and values different people attach to landscapes. I used a qualitative method and conducted guided interviews with 27 people from three different groups: (1) fire and wilderness management personnel from the Bitterroot National Forest, (2) residents …

Economics Of Feeding Distillers Grains To Diary Cows, Alvaro Garcia, Gary Taylor

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Dairy producers need reliable information before purchasing specific feeds. Along with the price of a commodity it is very important to have a complete nutrient analysis of the feed as well as an estimation of its energy content. The cost/nutrient method can be used to evaluate the economics of using distillers grains versus other feeds.
