Avian Seed Dispersers Of The Invasive Rubus Niveus (Rosaceae) In The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Monica C. Soria Nov 2006

Avian Seed Dispersers Of The Invasive Rubus Niveus (Rosaceae) In The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Monica C. Soria

Theses

The foraging behavior of bird assemblages at Rubus niveus was determined over two seasons in the agricultural zone of Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos in order to identify effective seed dispersers of the species and understand the factors that aid invasion of fleshy fruited weeds. A total of seven bird species were observed feeding on R. niveus fruits. In both seasons, the small ground finch (Geospiza fuliginosa), the introduced smooth-billed ani (Crotophaga ani ) and the small tree finch (Camarhynchus parvulus) were the most common visitors. Mean number of seeds removed per visit was higher for …

The Association Between Elevated Hippocampal Glutamate Levels And Cognitive Deficits In Epilepsy, Michele Sophia Buragas Nov 2006

The Association Between Elevated Hippocampal Glutamate Levels And Cognitive Deficits In Epilepsy, Michele Sophia Buragas

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between extracellular basal hippocampal glutamate levels and cognitive function in epileptic patients. We used the zero-flow microdialysis method to measure the extracellular concentrations of glutamate in the epileptogenic and non-epileptogenic hippocampus of 23 awake epileptic patients during the interictal period. All patients underwent extensive neuropsychological testing to assess cognitive functioning prior to probe implantation. Basal glutamate levels in the epileptogenic hippocampus were significantly higher than the non-epileptogenic hippocampus (mean, 11.96 micromolar (µM) versus 2.92 µM, respectively). Elevated basal glutamate levels in the epileptogenic hippocampus correlated with decreased scores on the …

The Effects Of Cyclic Strain On Rat Tail Tenocytes, Richard James Crockett Nov 2006

The Effects Of Cyclic Strain On Rat Tail Tenocytes, Richard James Crockett

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cyclic tension on the expression of hyaluronic acid, its receptor (CD44), and total glycosaminoglycan content in tendon fibroblasts. An in vitro model was used to analyze tenocytes from the tail tendons of rats. Tenocytes in the experimental group were exposed to cyclic mechanical stress, and using ELISA, western blot, and colormetric dye-binding assays, the effect of strain on cultured tenocytes was examined. Tenocytes exposed to mechanical strain produced 1528 ± 58 ng/mL (mean ± SEM) of hyaluronic acid, while those in a control environment produced only 730 ± 27 …

Sub-Typing Of Prrsv Isolates By Means Of Measurement Of Cross-Neutralization Reactions, Fernando A. Osorio Nov 2006

Sub-Typing Of Prrsv Isolates By Means Of Measurement Of Cross-Neutralization Reactions, Fernando A. Osorio

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The degree of similitude or closeness between two different isolates or strains of PRRSV is very important for deciding which strains should be used for immunization, by either vaccinating with commercial vaccines or attempting to stabilize a herd with planned wt PRRSV infection. As previously known for certain important viral diseases, such as in Foot and Mouth Disease, the reciprocal (cross-) neutralization titers between two strains may be of utmost importance to establish the degree of similarity or difference between these. There is currently a void of methods that would allow distinguishing or grouping strains of PRRSV in a manner …

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Polymorphisms And Invasive Streptoccus Pneumoniae Infections, Sarah Beth Doernberg Nov 2006

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Polymorphisms And Invasive Streptoccus Pneumoniae Infections, Sarah Beth Doernberg

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Streptococcus pneumoniae[italicized everytime] (S. pneumoniae) causes a spectrum of disease severity, and human host factors likely play a role in this variation. One candidate factor is macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), a pro-inflammatory cytokine and upstream regulator of innate immunity. The MIF[italicized when not in parenthesis] promoter contains two functional polymorphisms, a tetranucleotide (CATT) repeat such that MIF expression increases with repeat number from 5-8 and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) leading to a G-to-C transition, which results in increased MIF expression in cell line reporter assays. Emerging data suggest an association between high-expression MIF alleles and inflammatory disease. This …

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Community Survey, 2006: A Sourcebook Of Community Attitudes, Chad Farrell, Robert H. Langworthy

Matanuska-Susitna Borough Community Survey

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Community Survey (Mat-Su Survey) was a cooperative effort on the part of Mat-Su College, the University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA) and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough which asked Mat-Su Borough residents to evaluate the quality of Borough services, provide opinions about Borough decision-making, and sum up their perceptions about a range of issues relevant to the present and future of the Mat-Su community. The survey was distributed to every Borough household in the spring of 2006; a total of 2,600 were received, coded, and analyzed for the report. The Sourcebook provides detailed tabular results in six major areas: (1) evaluation …

Prevention Of Aluminium Chloride-Induced Mitodepression With Myrobalan (Fruit Of Terminalia Chebula, Retz, Combretaceae) In Allium Cepa Model, H. S. Rathore Et Al. Nov 2006

Prevention Of Aluminium Chloride-Induced Mitodepression With Myrobalan (Fruit Of Terminalia Chebula, Retz, Combretaceae) In Allium Cepa Model, H. S. Rathore Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Allium cepa bulbs were grown in pure tap water (Group I), in five concentrations (10-1M to 10-5M) of aluminium chloride in the absence (Group II) and in the presence (Group III) of myrobalan (fruit of Terminalia chebula) at a fix concentration of 0.10 mg/ml. Parameters of study were mean root length (after 72 hr) and mitotic index, abnormal mistosis, chromosomal aberrations and nucleolar morphology (after 48 hr). AlCl3 at all concentrations except at 10-1M where roots did not grew at all, significantly lowered root growth and mitotic index, effect appeared concentration dependent …

Geoarcheological And Historical Investigations In The Comal Springs Arrea, Lcra Clear Springs Autotransformer Project, Comal County, Texas, John E. Dockall, Douglas K. Boyd, Lannie Ethridge Kittrell

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted testing and data recovery investigations at five archeological sites in the city of New Braunfels, in Comal County, Texas. The work was done in August and September 2005 for the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) for its Clear Springs Autotransformer Project, which involves the replacement of high-voltage electrical transmission towers through the New Braunfels area. A transmission tower location at prehistoric site 41CM286, located on an upland ridge overlooking the Guadalupe River, was investigated with a shovel test. Deposits were limited to 10 cm overlying bedrock limestone. In a preliminary report, the site was recommended …
