Phytostabilization As A Remediation Alternative At Mining Sites, Dannis Neuman, Karl L. Ford
Phytostabilization As A Remediation Alternative At Mining Sites, Dannis Neuman, Karl L. Ford
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
In the last 10 years, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has reclaimed a number of abandoned mine land (AML) sites, often by removing mine, mill, and smelter wastes and taking them to a repository. This removal process involves excavating, hauling, placing, and capping tens of thousands of cubic yards of material, which can be quite costly.
BLM is seeking more cost-effective methods for reclaiming AML sites. Phytostabilization is a promising alternative for accomplishing the goals of a removal at a tenth of the cost. Phytostabilization is an in situ technology involving soil amendments and metals-tolerant plants to establish a …

Transculturation Of Visual Signs: A Case Analysis Of The Swastika, Joanne Mundorf, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study explores how the meaning of visual signs changes through the process of transculturation applied to the key Nazi symbol, the swastika. A historical case study of forty-two Nazi and pre-Nazi stamps is conducted to analyze key factors in the process of creating meaning. The study finds that timing, control, history, and universalism are key factors for the transculturation of the swastika. A preliminary model of transculturation is presented. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed.

Integrating Technology In An Elementary Classroom, Ben Whipple
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
The purpose of my research is to compare the use of technology in an elementary class to a class whose instruction is limited to traditional methods. Investigating the achievement of the students, the attention of the students and the comprehension of students will be a major part of my study. My purpose will be to see if students benefit from technology and if there is an improvement, to what degree. I will be reviewing peer-reviewed articles to see what is published about the use of technology and what the benefits of using technology in a classroom are. This review will …

Agroterrorism— Why We’Re Not Ready: A Look At The Role Of Law Enforcement, Alberto R. Gonzales, Regina B. Schofield, Glenn R. Schmitt
United States Department of Justice: Publications
Terrorists seeking to strike a blow at the U.S. economy need look no further than the Nation’s heartland for a “soft” target. An agroterrorist attack could dramatically impact many aspects of American life, including local law enforcement, which— especially in rural areas—is financially and strategically unprepared to respond.
Agricultural experts say that today they are most concerned about the intentional introduction of foot-and mouth disease (FMD) into the food supply. Twenty times more infectious than smallpox, FMD causes painful blisters on the tongues, hooves, and teats of cloven-hoofed animals (like cows, pigs, goats, and deer), rendering them unable to walk, …

Woodlots are forest islands embedded within an urban matrix, and often represent the only natural areas remaining in suburban areas. Woodlots represent critical conservation areas for native plants, and are important habitat for wildlife in urban areas. Invasion by non-indigenous (NIS) plants can alter ecological structure and function, and may be especially severe in remnant forests where NIS propagule pressure is high. Woody shrubs in the Family Berberidaceae have been well documented as invaders of the forest–urban matrix in North America. Mahonia bealei (Berberidaceae) is a clonal shrub native to China, and is a popular ornamental in the Southeastern United …
Predictors Of Introduction Success In The South Florida Avifauna, Craig R. Allen
Predictors Of Introduction Success In The South Florida Avifauna, Craig R. Allen
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Biological invasions are an increasing global challenge, for which single-species studies and analyses focused on testing single hypotheses of causation in isolation are unlikely to provide much additional insight. Species interact with other species to create communities, which derive from species interactions and from the interactions of species with the scale specific elements of the landscape that provide suitable habitat and exploitable resources. I used logistic regression analysis to sort among potential intrinsic, community and landscape variables that theoretically influence introduction success. I utilized the avian fauna of the Everglades of South Florida, and the variables body mass, distance to …
Life-History And Ecological Correlates Of Geographic Variation In Egg And Clutch Mass Among Passerine Species, Thomas E. Martin, R. D. Bassar, S. K. Bassar, J. J. Fontaine, P. Lloyd, H. A. Mathewson, A. M. Niklison, A. Chalfoun
Life-History And Ecological Correlates Of Geographic Variation In Egg And Clutch Mass Among Passerine Species, Thomas E. Martin, R. D. Bassar, S. K. Bassar, J. J. Fontaine, P. Lloyd, H. A. Mathewson, A. M. Niklison, A. Chalfoun
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Broad geographic patterns in egg and clutch mass are poorly described, and potential causes of variation remain largely unexamined. We describe interspecific variation in avian egg and clutch mass within and among diverse geographic regions and explore hypotheses related to allometry, clutch size, nest predation, adult mortality, and parental care as correlates and possible explanations of variation. We studied 74 species of Passeriformes at four latitudes on three continents: the north temperate United States, tropical Venezuela, subtropical Argentina, and south temperate South Africa. Egg and clutch mass increased with adult body mass in all locations, but differed among locations for …
Genetic Implications Of Reduced Survival Of Male Red Deer Cervus Elaphus Under Harvest, Jeffrey J. Hard, L. Scott Mills, James M. Peek
Genetic Implications Of Reduced Survival Of Male Red Deer Cervus Elaphus Under Harvest, Jeffrey J. Hard, L. Scott Mills, James M. Peek
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
We use simple, multivariate evolutionary models to evaluate the short-term potential for size-selective harvest to reduce genetic variability and alter life history in cervids. These genetic effects limit sustainable levels of harvest of the animals because they determine how changes in sex ratio, generation length and traits contributing to fitness influence population growth rate and local adaptation. Our analysis of harvest-mediated adaptive evolution employs a genetic approach that parameterizes models with empirical data obtained from European red deer Cervus elaphus. The analysis indicates that harvest, if sufficiently high to reduce the breeding ratio of males to females to below …
Science And Implementation, Mary Ruckelshaus, Donna Darm
Science And Implementation, Mary Ruckelshaus, Donna Darm
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
The U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) relies heavily on science, and not surprisingly science has become a major battleground in the controversy surrounding its implementation (Doremus, this volume). Apparently, Congress hoped that ESA decisions could be made based on science alone and thereby insulated from politics (U.S. Congress 1982, 19). This hope was unrealistic for at least two reasons. First, science cannot answer with certainty many of the questions that must be answered in ESA decision making, especially in the time frames demanded by the statute. Second, while science has a central role in informing natural resource decisions, scientific information …
Evaluating Crops For A Flexible Summer Fallow Cropping System, Douglas G. Felter, Drew J. Lyon, David C. Nielsen
Evaluating Crops For A Flexible Summer Fallow Cropping System, Douglas G. Felter, Drew J. Lyon, David C. Nielsen
Panhandle Research and Extension Center
Substituting a short-season, spring-planted crop for summer fallow when soil water is sufficient at planting might reduce soil degradation without significantly increasing the risk of crop failure. The objectives of this study were to determine the relationship of crop grain or forage yield to plant available soil water at planting. The study was conducted on silt loam soils in 2004 and 2005 at Sidney, NE, and Akron, CO. A range of soil water levels was established with supplemental irrigation before planting. Four crops [spring triticale (X Triticosecale rimpaui Wittm.) for forage, dry pea (Pisum sativum L.) for grain, …

Servant-Leadership And Transparency: A Brief Interview With Robert Spitzer, S.J., Robert Spitzer S.J.
Servant-Leadership And Transparency: A Brief Interview With Robert Spitzer, S.J., Robert Spitzer S.J.
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
I. Robert Greenleaf refers to love as essential to both the servant and the leader in generating legitimate power in the self, the organization, the community, the world. Emerson furthers this point when he proposed the following: mediocre people want to be loved; true people are lovely. How does love influence your own leadership and your way offollowing others? I commit myself to two fundamental ingredients of love on a daily basis: to look for the contributive before the comparative in my life and to look for the good news before the bad news in others. I do not always …

The Earth's surface is shaped by the interaction of tectonics, water, sediment, solutes, and biota over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales and across diverse environments. Development of a predictive science of Earth surface dynamics integrates many disciplines and approaches, including hydrology, geomorphology, ocean and atmospheric science, sedimentary and structural geology, geochemistry, and ecology. This paper discusses challenges, opportunities, and a few example problems that can serve as pathways toward this integration.

Part 3: Tunnel Vision: Traffic Congestion In Hampton Roads, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Traffic congestion already is bad in the region; we estimate the cost in 2006 to be $473 million, or $296 per person. If nothing is done to alleviate the situation, this cost will grow to $1.07 billion, or $608 per person in 2015. Our simulations also predict the speed of automobile commuters going through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel will fall to 7.2 mph in 2015.
