"Introduction" To Advanced Magnetic Nanostructures, David J. Sellmyer, Ralph Skomski Jan 2006

"Introduction" To Advanced Magnetic Nanostructures, David J. Sellmyer, Ralph Skomski

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

The nanostructures considered here are magnetic and characterized by structural length scales ranging from a few interatomic distances to about one micrometer. The basic length unit is the nanometer (1 nm = 10–3 μm = 10–9 m), corresponding to about four interatomic Fe-Fe distances. Magnetic nanostructures pose experimental challenges, exhibit interesting physical phenomena, and have many present or potential applications. An important aspect is that structural lengths affect, but only partly determine, the magnetic length scales encountered in the structures. Examples are domains in semihard nanoparticles, where both the domain size and the domain-wall thickness may be smaller …

Answers for homeowners, realtors and lenders about residential on-site wastewater treatment systems.

This publication will answer many questions that homeowners, potential homeowners, realtors and lenders have about residential on-site wastewater treatment systems. Information is based on Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality's "Title 124: Rules and Regulations for the Design, Operation and Maintenance of On-site Wastewater Treatment Systems.

Explanation Of Statistics Used In This Report

Nebraska Swine Reports

Pigs treated alike vary in performance due to their different genetic makeup and to environmental effect we cannot completely control. When a group of pigs is randomly allotted to treatments it is nearly impossible to get an “equal” group of pigs on each treatment. The natural variability among pigs and the number of pigs per treatment determine the expected variation among treatment groups due to random sampling.

Effects Of Nutrition During Gilt Development On Lifetime Productivity Of Sows Of Two Prolific Maternal Lines: Growth And Puberty Characteristics Of Rep 1 Gilts, Beth Maricle, Matthew Anderson, Jeffrey Perkins, Donald Mcclure, Laura Albrecht, Jose-Roman Moreno-Salgado, Phillip S. Miller, Rodger K. Johnson

Nebraska Swine Reports

This report is an annual update of an ongoing experiment initiated in 2005 to investigate effects of energy restriction during gilt development on reproduction through four parities. Gilts of two genetic lines expected to differ in rate of growth are used and are developed with either ad libitum access to feed or are restricted in energy to 75% of ad libitum amounts from approximately 120 days of age to breeding. Semen of the same sires, an industry maternal line, was used to produce gilts of both lines, but their dams were from two uniquely different populations. Dams of one line …

Odor Footprint Tool Progress: Regional Output Resources, Richard R. Stowell, Dennis D. Schulte, Richard K. Koelsch, Christopher G. Henry

Nebraska Swine Reports

This article highlights practical applications for resources being developed using the Odor Footprint Tool and the effects of differing regional weather patterns on needed setbacks by describing resources created for the regions surrounding Norfolk and Lincoln, Neb. The Odor Footprint Tool is being developed to help people assess the odor impact of new and expanded animal production facilities on the surrounding areas and use science- based information to establish minimum setback distances. Progress continues to be made toward development of a system that can be used in the field to develop site-specific odor footprints. As an intermediate step in this …

Effect Of Low-Protein Non-Amino Acid Supplemented Diet And Ractopamine (Paylean®) On Growth Performance And Serum Urea Concentration Of Late-Finishing Pigs, Roman Moreno, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller Jan 2006

Effect Of Low-Protein Non-Amino Acid Supplemented Diet And Ractopamine (Paylean®) On Growth Performance And Serum Urea Concentration Of Late-Finishing Pigs, Roman Moreno, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller

Nebraska Swine Reports

When feeding excessive amounts of protein, the nitrogen eliminated by the pigs in swine facilities has an important impact in the environment. Therefore, it is important to define nutritional strategies that promote a more efficient use of protein. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a low-protein non-amino acid supplemented diet and ractopamine (Paylean®) on performance of late-finishing pigs. Thirty-six finishing barrows and gilts with an initial body weight of 153.4 lb were used in a 42- day experiment. Pigs were penned individually and had ad libitum access to feed and water. The pigs were randomly allotted to …

Effect Of Dietary Crude Protein Versus Crystalline Amino Acids On Growth Performance, Serum Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I Concentration, And Igf-I Mrna Expression In Growing-Finishing Gilts, Robert Fischer, Ruth Diedrichsen, Debra Clompton, Andrea Cupp, Phillip S. Miller

Nebraska Swine Reports

Fifty-six crossbred gilts with an initial body weight of 73 lb were used in a 26-day growth study. The pigs were randomly allocated to one of seven dietary treatments and individually penned (8 replicates/treatment). The dietary treatments consisted of four standard corn-soybean meal diets, which were formulated by changing the corn and soybean meal (10, 14, 18, and 22% CP) ratio and three low-protein, amino acid-supplemented diets formulated to contain similar lysine, methionine, tryptophan, and threonine concentrations as the corn-soybean meal diets (10% CP + AA,14% CP + AA, and 18% CP + AA). Pig and feeder weights were recorded …

Corporate Speech, Securities Regulation, And An Institutional Approach To The First Amendment, Michael R. Siebecker Jan 2006

Corporate Speech, Securities Regulation, And An Institutional Approach To The First Amendment, Michael R. Siebecker

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Does the First Amendment shield politically tinged corporate speech from the compelled disclosure and reporting requirements embedded in the U.S. securities laws? The question arises in the securities regulation context because of an impending jurisprudential train wreck between the Supreme Court's commercial speech doctrine and its approach to corporate political speech. As corporations begin mixing commercial messages with political commentary, First Amendment jurisprudence simply provides insufficient guidance on the role government should play in regulating that speech. Although First Amendment jurisprudence generally counsels against governmental restrictions on corporate political speech without regard to the truth or falsity of the message, …

Haskell Agricultural Laboratory (Northeast Research and Extension Center)

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of heavyweight pig removal and remixing on performance. The experiment used a total of 450 pigs (31 kg initial BW) that were sorted and remixed at a mean replicate BW of 73 kg. Treatments were 15 pigs/pen from initial BW to slaughter (15S), 20 pigs/pen from initial BW to time of sort and remix, then reduced to 15 pigs/pen (20/ 15), and 15 pigs/pen from time of sort and remix to slaughter, comprised of the 5 heaviest pigs from each of three 20/15 pens per replicate (15M …

Mise En Seine, Deborah J. Pike Jan 2006

Mise En Seine, Deborah J. Pike

Arts Original Creative Works

In Paris there is no experience more enchanting than wandering along the Seine on an Autumn afternoon, stopping every now and then to rifle through the stands of a bookiniste, only to discover a treasure: a 17th century map, a book of poems by Jacques Prévert, France’s most pleasing poet of the mid-20th century.

While travellers might be intoxicated with the music of Parisian streets or awed by the ornate architecture, the city can appear cold and frustrate with its inaccessible beauty and the seeming remoteness of its people.

The best way into French culture is through its literature. Enjoy …

Is The United States Bound By The Customary International Law Of Torture? A Proposal For Ats Litigation In The War On Terror, Joshua A. Decker Jan 2006

Is The United States Bound By The Customary International Law Of Torture? A Proposal For Ats Litigation In The War On Terror, Joshua A. Decker

Chicago Journal of International Law

This inquiry proceeds in three parts. First, I determine whether the United States tortured War on Terror detainees. I then consider whether a binding international norm against torture exists and if the United States violated it. Finally, I examine this issue from a policy standpoint, asking whether it is good policy to have the customary international law of torture bind the United States.
