The Rotavirus Enterotoxin Nsp4 Directly Interacts With The Caveolar Structural Protein Caveolin-1, Rebecca D. Parr, Stephen M. Storey, Deanne M. Mitchell, Avery Mcintosh, Minglong Zhou, Kiran D. Mir, Judith M. Ball

Faculty Publications

Rotavirus nonstructural protein 4 (NSP4) is known to function as an intracellular receptor at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) critical to viral morphogenesis and is the first characterized viral enterotoxin. Exogenously added NSP4 induces diarrhea in rodent pups and stimulates secretory chloride currents across intestinal segments as measured in Ussing chambers. Circular dichroism studies further reveal that intact NSP4 and the enterotoxic peptide (NSP4114-135) that is located within the extended, C-terminal amphipathic helix preferentially interact with caveola-like model membranes. We now show colocalization of NSP4 and caveolin-1 in NSP4-transfected and rotavirus-infected mammalian cells in reticular structures surrounding the nucleus …

Compounds approved for therapeutic use and in vitro inhibitors of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) were evaluated for inhibition in the mouse SARS-CoV replication model. A hybrid interferon, interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) B/D, and a mismatched double-stranded (ds) RNA interferon (IFN) inducer, Ampligen® (poly I:poly C124), were the only compounds that potently inhibited virus titres in the lungs of infected mice as assessed by CPE titration assays. When mice were dosed intraperitoneally (i.p.) with IFN-alpha B/D once daily for 3 days beginning 4 h after virus exposure, SARS-CoV replication in the lungs of infected mice was reduced by 1 log10 …

Reusable And Sharable Learning Objects Supporting Students’ Learning Of Data Structures In University Courses, K Chansilp, Ron Oliver

EDU-COM International Conference

Data structures are a conceptually demanding topic which confronts many computer science students early in their course. The topic has a strong conceptual basis and often proves difficult for many to grasp. This paper reports on a project which has developed a range of learning objects to help students learn about the different data structures and the algorithms by which they are controlled. Called VIDSAA, the suite of learning objects provides a visual representation which enables students to observe and interact with a large number of data structure algorithms as they are run and to observe and view the outcomes. …

Emerging Opportunities For Income Growth At The University Of Dar-Es-Salaam: Private Public Partnership Development Projects, A S. Chungu

EDU-COM International Conference

Tanzania in 1986 went through a reform programme of shifting from central planned to a marketeconomy in that, trade, exchange and interest rates were liberalized and more than half of the 400 parastatals were closed down and/or privatised. In the second round of reforms that took in 1996 included institutional and structural reforms, at this time further transformation to a market economy, public administration and investment in key development sectors (education, health, agriculture, water, roads) took place. Such transformations resulted in increased macroeconomic stability and growth levels averaging 6 percent last year. In line with national reform programme, the University …

Escalating Commitment To Failing Financial Decisions: Why Does It Occur?, John Morgan, James Hansen

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Research indicates inappropriate escalation of commitment to apparently failing decisions occurs in many areas of life. Examples include doubling-up blackjack bets to recover losses, the too lengthy Vietnam War debacle, and the tendency to continue with financial investments long after they appear to be failing. What motivates such behavior? Two theories presently compete as major explanations for this behavior: the self-justification theory and the prospect theory. This paper compares the two theories to determine which theory better predicts escalation behaviors within au un-confounded and unambiguous context. The research is motivated by the belief that understanding why people escalate is prerequisite …

The Next Step In The Fight Against Human Trafficking: Outlawing The Trade In Slave-Made Goods, Kevin Bales, Becky Cornell Jan 2006

The Next Step In The Fight Against Human Trafficking: Outlawing The Trade In Slave-Made Goods, Kevin Bales, Becky Cornell

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

Historian Sir Lewis Namier once remarked that people tend to "imagine the past and remember the future" when conceptualizing historical periods and events.' Author William M. Wiecek applied this Namierism to the fierce debate over slavery in America in the late 1800s when he wrote, "[w]hen they thought and wrote about some historical problem, such as the framers' actual intentions, abolitionists (and defenders of slavery, too) imagined the past in terms of their wishful thinking. When they tried to decry and influence the future, they 'remembered' it along synthetic lines sketched by their historical imagining." Today, the philosophical debate over …

Trafficking Into Prostitution In India And The Indian Judiciary, Kumar Regmi Jan 2006

Trafficking Into Prostitution In India And The Indian Judiciary, Kumar Regmi

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

India, one of the largest democracies in the world, has constitutionally prohibited traffic in human beings and has enshrined the right to be free from exploitation as a fundamental right of every person. India also was one of the earliest parties to the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others of 1949, and it claims to have implemented this treaty within its domestic legal system through the Suppression of Immoral Traffic in Women and Girls Act (hereinafter "SITA") of 1956, subsequently amended and renamed the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (hereinafter …

The Transformation Of South African Private Law After Ten Years Of Democracy: The Role Of Torts (Delict) In The Consolidation Of Democracy, Christopher J. Roederer Jan 2006

The Transformation Of South African Private Law After Ten Years Of Democracy: The Role Of Torts (Delict) In The Consolidation Of Democracy, Christopher J. Roederer

School of Law Faculty Publications

Although the role of the private law has been largely ignored in studies of transitional justice, private law is a crucial component in South Africa’s transition/transformation. Contrary to the views of some commentators, the private law and delict in particular, were tainted by apartheid. Further, even if the private law of South Africa was not infected by the apartheid cancer, it acted as a carrier and facilitator of apartheid values and policies, perpetuating the inequities apartheid. While there is evidence of the cancer in apartheid case law the more serious problem was a failure of delict to progress under apartheid. …

Tank Leaks At Hanford: A Review Of New Allegations, Washington Physicians For Social Responsibility Hanford Task Force

Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility

WPSR’s Hanford Task Force recently had the opportunity to review a report on suspected new and unreported leaks from Hanford’s high-level radioactive waste tanks. This report was prepared by John R. Brodeur, P.E., L.E.G, an environmental engineer and geologist who worked at Hanford during the 1990s. The document is titled "Recent Leaks From Hanford’s High-Level Waste Tanks: USDOE’s Failure to Monitor, Report or Characterize Tank Leaks" (April 2006). This is WPSR's review of those new allegations.

This research was completed money allocated during Round 6 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University was named …

Terpenes And Carbohydrate Source Influence Rumen Fermentation, Digestibility, Intake, And Preference In Sheep, J. J. Villalba, F. D. Provenza, K. C. Olson Jan 2006

Terpenes And Carbohydrate Source Influence Rumen Fermentation, Digestibility, Intake, And Preference In Sheep, J. J. Villalba, F. D. Provenza, K. C. Olson

Green Canyon Environmental Research Area, Logan Utah

We hypothesized that toxins and nutrients in foods interact to influence foraging behavior by herbivores. Based on this hypothesis we predicted that 1) terpenes in big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) influence intake and preference in sheep for diets varying in sources of nonstructural (barley grain) and structural (sugar beet pulp) carbohydrates, and 2) these effects are due to the differential effects of terpenes on fermentation products and apparent digestibility of each class of carbohydrates. Lambs were fed 2 isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets with varying proportions of the same ingredients (beet pulp- and barley grain-based diet) or offered a choice between the …

Co-Teaching Environmental Science, Amanda R. Benson Jan 2006

Co-Teaching Environmental Science, Amanda R. Benson

Graduate Research Papers

As a result of the highly qualified teacher requirements of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004 teachers must have subject matter competency to teach academic content. This has resulted in general education and special education teachers combining their experience in a co-taught classroom. This classroom is a setting that includes students of diverse needs and supports the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) for students. Most general education and special education professionals have little to no training in this area. Due to this there is high need for relevant and rigorous curriculum customized to …

Trehalose Uptake Through P2x7 Purinergic Channels Provides Dehydration Protection, Gloria D. Elliott, Jennifer L. Cusick, Xiang-Hong Liu, Michael A. Menze, Trudy Witt, Steven C. Hand, Mehmet Toner

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The tetra-anionic form of ATP (ATP4-) is known to induce monovalent and divalent ion fluxes in cells that express purinergic P2X7 receptors (Steinberg et al., 1987; Sung et al., 1985), and with sustained application of ATP it has been shown that dyes as large as 831 daltons can permeate the cell membrane (Steinberg et al, 1987). The current study explores the kinetics of loading α,α-trehalose (342 daltons) into ATP stimulated J774.A1 cells, which are known to express the purinergic P2X7 receptor (Steinberg et al., 1987). Cells that were incubated at 37 ̊C in a 50 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) …

Fungal Spore Dispersal By The Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene Carolina Carolina), S. C. Jones, W. J. Jordan, Scott J. Meiners, A. N. Miller, A. S. Methven

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Although spores from most macrofungi are wind- or water-dispersed, dispersal may also occur via biotic vectors. The Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is a facultative mycovore that may play an important role in fungal spore dispersal although, to date, no information exists on fungi occurring in fecal samples of box turtles or on the ecological significance of box turtles as spore dispersal vectors. Consequently, a study of the potential for Eastern box turtles to act as vectors for spore dispersal was initiated by capturing wild turtles and collecting fecal samples. Serial dilutions from fecal samples were made to enumerate …

Eastern Bluebirds Eject Brown-Headed Cowbird Eggs, Brian Peer, Lyndon Hawkins, Edwin Steinke, Patricia Bollinger, Eric Bollinger Jan 2006

Eastern Bluebirds Eject Brown-Headed Cowbird Eggs, Brian Peer, Lyndon Hawkins, Edwin Steinke, Patricia Bollinger, Eric Bollinger

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The relationship between the Brownheaded Cowbird (Molothrus ater) and its cavitynesting hosts has received little attention because of the assumption that cowbirds rarely parasitize these hosts. We tested the Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis), a host that is sometimes heavily parasitized by cowbirds, for egg ejection behavior. Bluebirds ejected 65% of experimentally added cowbird eggs (n = 20), but ejected no experimentally added conspecific eggs (n = 66). This suggests that cowbird parasitism, not conspecific brood parasitism, is the selective pressure responsible for egg ejection in this species. This level of rejection may be conservative because bluebirds nest in dark cavities, …

How Just Is The Union's Area Of Freedom, Security And Justice?:An Assessment Of The Normative Status Of International Fundamental Rights In The Union's Legal Order., Stephen Carruthers

Other resources

This thesis argues that international fundamental rights provide the most appropriate measure of justice for the Union’s area of ‘freedom, security and justice’ (AFSJ). However, it is argued that the normative status of international fundamental rights in Union law is undermined by the pursuit of the objective of autonomy of Union law and deficiencies in the legal mechanisms for giving effect to those rights.

This research analyses the sources and normative status of international fundamental rights in Union law, and in particular the AFSJ, both as currently constituted and under the Constitution, and assesses the robustness and effectiveness of the …
