Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The hitherto unknown 2,6‐hexadecadiynoic acid, 2,6‐nonadecadiynoic acid, and 2,9‐hexadecadiynoic acid were synthesized in two steps and in 11–18% overall yields starting from either 1,5‐hexadiyne or 1,8‐nonadiyne. Among all the compounds 2,6‐hexadecadiynoic acid displayed the best overall antifungal activity against both the fluconazole‐resistant Candida albicans strains ATCC 14053 and ATCC 60193, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC of 11 μM), and against Cryptococcus neoformans ATCC 66031 (MIC<5.7 μM). 2,9‐Hexadecadiynoic acid did not display any significant cytotoxicity against the fluconazole‐resistant C. albicans strains, but it showed fungitoxicity against C. neoformans ATCC 66031 with a MIC value of <5.8 μM. Other FA, such as 2‐hexadecynoic acid, 5‐hexadecynoic acid, 9‐hexadecynoic acid, and 6‐nonadecynoic acid were also synthesized and their antifungal activities compared with those of the novel acetylenic FA, 2‐Hexadecynoic acid, a known antifungal FA, exhibited the best antifungal activity (MIC=9.4 μM) against the fluconazole‐resistant C, albicans ATCC 14053 strain, but it showed a MIC value of only 100 μM against C. …

The Culture Of Legal Change: A Case Study Of Tobacco Control In Twenty-First Century Japan, Eric A. Feldman Jan 2006

The Culture Of Legal Change: A Case Study Of Tobacco Control In Twenty-First Century Japan, Eric A. Feldman

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article argues that the interaction of international norms and local culture is a central factor in the creation and transformation of legal rules. Like Alan Watson's influential theory of legal transplants, it emphasizes that legal change is frequently a consequence of learning from other jurisdictions. And like those who have argued that rational, self-interested lawmakers responding to incentives such as reelection are the engine of legal change, this Article treats incentives as critical motivators of human behavior. But in place of the cutting-and-pasting of black-letter legal doctrine it highlights the cross-border flow of social norms, and rather than material …

An Analysis Of Potential Conflicts Between The Stockholm Convention And Its Parties' Wto Obligations, D. Dean Batchelder Jan 2006

An Analysis Of Potential Conflicts Between The Stockholm Convention And Its Parties' Wto Obligations, D. Dean Batchelder

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Comment examines the compatibility of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants with parties' WTO obligations under the GATT Agreement. The Stockholm Convention represents a broad-based attempt to regulate persistent organic pollutants (POPs), some of the most damaging chemicals to the environment and human health. The commitments that parties to the Stockholm Convention have undertaken to control POPs may implicate international trade commitments. Hopefully the discussion in this Comment may also be relevant to other multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), especially those involving trade measures.

Growing Up Cartoonist In The Baby-Boom South: A Memoir And Cartoon Retrospective, Kate Salley Palmer Jan 2006

Growing Up Cartoonist In The Baby-Boom South: A Memoir And Cartoon Retrospective, Kate Salley Palmer

Monographs

Kate Salley Palmer was an inadvertent trailblazer. In the early 1970s, she was a freelance artist living in Clemson, South Carolina. Then the nationally televised Watergate hearings took hold of her, and she found herself drawing cartoon after cartoon about the scandal, whose latest developments she followed as religiously as other people follow soap operas. She started selling a few of the cartoons she couldn't stop drawing to whatever local newspapers would buy them. In 1975, The Greenville News hired her part-time. She was, it turned out, that paper's first-ever political cartoonist. By the next year, the News was running …

Effect Of Pyridostigmine On Heart Rate Recovery After Exercise In Trained Athletes And Sedentary Adults, Thomas Andrew Dewland Jan 2006

Effect Of Pyridostigmine On Heart Rate Recovery After Exercise In Trained Athletes And Sedentary Adults, Thomas Andrew Dewland

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Acetylcholinesterase inhibition with pyridostigmine has been previously studied in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), but the effects of this medication on heart rate recovery after exercise and other indices of parasympathetic activity in populations with greater baseline vagal tone has not been fully characterized. Ten healthy, sedentary adults and ten aerobically trained athletes were enrolled in a prospective, double blind, randomized placebo controlled crossover trial. All study subjects were treated with a single dose of oral pyridostigmine 30 mg and matching placebo on separate days. Heart rate variability (HRV) at rest and heart rate recovery (HRR) at one minute …

Mccarthyism And Libraries: Intellectual Freedom Under Fire, 1947-1954, Stephen Francoeur Jan 2006

Mccarthyism And Libraries: Intellectual Freedom Under Fire, 1947-1954, Stephen Francoeur

Publications and Research

This essay will analyze how library organizations, such as the American Library Association, and individual librarians responded to the pressure placed on libraries during the McCarthy era to deal with alleged subversion. Although libraries have always been the target of censors, it was during the first decade of the Cold War that those Americans most fearful of Communist subversion swept up large numbers of their fellow citizens in a crusade to rid libraries of Communist influence. That effort by the self-proclaimed “loyal Americans” to save libraries put more than just library collections under the microscope. The librarians themselves were scrutinized …

Environmental Justice And The Role Of Social Capital In An Underserved Urban Community, Lorraine Ann Dillon Jan 2006

Environmental Justice And The Role Of Social Capital In An Underserved Urban Community, Lorraine Ann Dillon

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate a community's beliefs, attitudes, and experiences regarding their neighborhood's environmental health issues and the ways in which individuals utilize social capital (the degree to which a community collaborates and cooperates) to improve their environmental health. Research correlating social capital with health status shows that the higher the level of social capital in a community, the better the health. An understanding of why some groups exhibit more social capital than others is important in improving the public health system. The study was accomplished by comparing a convenience sample of two specific groups …

The objective of this study was to assess the effects, if any, of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ambient air of Kaohsiuug, Taiwan, on certain hematological and immunological parameters of 153 female study participants. The major source of VOCs was vehicle emissions. The participants were selected from three areas, each area at a different distance from a freeway. Results indicated that total concentrations of VOCs and a subgroup of 25 VOCs (VOC25.) ranged from 250 to 335 ppb and 89 to 113 ppb, respectively. The distribution of VOC concentrations did not correlate with distance from the freeway. …

Learning And Cemory In The Cav1.2 Knockout Mouse, Jessica Ann White Jan 2006

Learning And Cemory In The Cav1.2 Knockout Mouse, Jessica Ann White

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Of the many signaling pathways found within neurons, calcium signaling is perhaps the most ubiquitous and versatile. Calcium influx through L-type voltage-gated calcium channels (L-VGCCs) is involved in numerous aspects of neuronal function: activation and regulation of gene transcription, synaptic plasticity, and regulation of neuronal excitability are all modulated by calcium. Because many calcium-related subcellular functions are implicated in the formation and storage of long-term memory, this writer investigated the role of an L-VGCC, CaV1.2, in hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. Utilizing the Cre/loxP gene-targeting system, the CaV1.2 L-VGCC isoform was conditionally deleted in the forebrain of mice. This extensive deletion …

Application Of The ³H-Leucine Incorporation Technique For Quantifying Rates Of Bacterial Secondary Production Associated With Decaying Wetland Plant Litter, Jane E. Gillies Jan 2006

Application Of The ³H-Leucine Incorporation Technique For Quantifying Rates Of Bacterial Secondary Production Associated With Decaying Wetland Plant Litter, Jane E. Gillies

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The 3H-leucine incorporation technique for quantifying rates of bacterial production has increased in popularity since its original description for bacterioplankton communities. Previous studies examining 3H-leucine-incorporation conditions for bacterial communities in other habitats have reported a wide range of final leucine concentrations to achieve saturation-level uptake. This study assessed the application of the 3H-leucine-incorporation procedure for measuring bacterial production associated with decaying wetland plant litter. Substrate saturation experiments were conducted on three dates for bacteria colonizing decaying litter of Typha angustifolia, Schoenoplectus validus, and Phragmites australis. Incorporation of 3H-leucine into protein exhibited a biphasic saturation …

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Interpolation of geolocation or Argos tracking data is a necessity for habitat use analyses of marine vertebrates. In a fluid marine environment, characterized by curvilinear structures, linearly interpolated track data are not realistic. Based on these two facts, we interpolated tracking data from albatrosses, penguins, boobies, sea lions, fur seals and elephant seals using six mathematical algorithms. Given their popularity in mathematical computing, we chose Bézier, hermite and cubic splines, in addition to a commonly used linear algorithm to interpolate data. Performance of interpolation methods was compared with different temporal resolutions representative of the less-precise geolocation and the more-precise Argos …

The molecules benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and 1-, 3-, and 6-nitrobenzo[a]pyrene (1-NBaP, 3-NBaP, 6-NBaP) are currently of significant interest due to their presence in respirable combustion exhaust particulates and their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Structure−function correlations as well as spectroscopic signatures for trace analysis are necessary for these benzo[a]pyrene derivatives. In this paper, detailed infrared and Raman spectroscopic data of BaP and its three mononitrated isomers are provided for the first time. By utilizing density functional theory (DFT, B3LYP method with 6-311+G** basis set), the molecular geometries and the vibrational spectra are calculated. Good agreement is …
