Renal Dysfunction, Cardiovascular Risk, And The Response To Ace Inhibition In Patients After Myocardial Infarction, Powell Oliapuram Jose Jan 2006

Renal Dysfunction, Cardiovascular Risk, And The Response To Ace Inhibition In Patients After Myocardial Infarction, Powell Oliapuram Jose

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Proteinuria is a known cardiovascular risk factor in hypertensive or diabetic patients as well as the general population. Worsening renal function (WRF) has been shown to influence outcomes in the heart failure population. The prognostic value of these markers for renal dysfunction in patients after myocardial infarction is unclear. Methods: The Survival and Ventricular Enlargement trial (SAVE) randomized 2231 patients with left ventricular dysfunction between 3-16 days (average 11 days) post-MI to receive captopril or placebo; those with a serum creatinine above 2.5mg/dl were excluded from SAVE. WRF was defined as an increase in creatinine greater-than 0.3mg/dl measured from …

Physical-Biological Interactions And Their Effect On Phytoplankton Blooms In Fjords And Near-Coastal Waters, Lars Erik Holmedal, Torbjørn Utnes Jan 2006

Physical-Biological Interactions And Their Effect On Phytoplankton Blooms In Fjords And Near-Coastal Waters, Lars Erik Holmedal, Torbjørn Utnes

Journal of Marine Research

A one-dimensional flow model which accounts for turbulence and stratification in the upper ocean has been applied in conjunction with a one-dimensional production-advection-diffusion model to predict the initial evolution of the phytoplankton biomass concentration under given biological and physical conditions. Here the stratification is caused by the salinity which is modeled by a one-dimensional diffusion equation; the density is related to the salinity by a linear relation (state equation). The resulting one-dimensional model has been applied to investigate how local physical conditions affect the initiation of phytoplankton blooms in nutrition rich waters characterized by wind driven currents and salinity stratification. …

Carbon Flows Through A Benthic Food Web: Integrating Biomass, Isotope And Tracer Data, Dick Van Oevelen, Karline Soetaert, Jack J. Middelburg, Peter M. J. Herman, Leon Moodley, Ilse Hamels, Tom Moens, Carlo H. R. Heip Jan 2006

Carbon Flows Through A Benthic Food Web: Integrating Biomass, Isotope And Tracer Data, Dick Van Oevelen, Karline Soetaert, Jack J. Middelburg, Peter M. J. Herman, Leon Moodley, Ilse Hamels, Tom Moens, Carlo H. R. Heip

Journal of Marine Research

The herbivorous, detrital and microbial pathways are major components of marine food webs. Although it is commonly recognized that these pathways can be linked in several ways, elucidating carbon transfers between or within these pathways remains a challenge. Intertidal flat communities are driven by a wide spectrum of organic matter sources that support these different pathways within the food web. Here we reconstruct carbon pathways using inverse analysis based on mass balancing, stable isotope signatures and tracer data. Data were available on biomass, total carbon production and processing, integrated diet information from stable isotope signatures and the transfer of recently …

A Model Of Methane Concentration Profiles In The Open Ocean, G. C. Nihous, S. M. Masutani Jan 2006

A Model Of Methane Concentration Profiles In The Open Ocean, G. C. Nihous, S. M. Masutani

Journal of Marine Research

Methane-bearing particulate matter formed in the upper ocean layer is allowed to settle and degrade, releasing methane into the water column as a source in one-dimensional advection-diffusion equations. Predicted carbon and methane particulate fluxes are in good agreement with sediment trap data, using parameters of expected magnitude and particulate methane production well within the mixed layer. This suggests a rapid pathway to the atmosphere and reduced effects on methane concentrations below. Vertical advection rates yielding a good fit between methane concentration calculations and data are larger than expected unless methane oxidation is included. This confirms the significance of methane oxidation …

Bio-Irrigation In Permeable Sediments: An Assessment Of Model Complexity, Filip J. R. Meysman, Oleksiy S. Galaktionov, Britta Gribsholt, Jack J. Middelburg Jan 2006

Bio-Irrigation In Permeable Sediments: An Assessment Of Model Complexity, Filip J. R. Meysman, Oleksiy S. Galaktionov, Britta Gribsholt, Jack J. Middelburg

Journal of Marine Research

Burrowing benthic animals ventilate their burrow networks, and this enhances the transport of solutes in the sediment and exchange with the overlying water column, a process referred to as bio-irrigation. Various models have been proposed to model bio-irrigation, with different levels of sophistication related to model dimensionality and parameter numbers. Here we address the issue of model complexity for bio-irrigation in permeable sediments. To this end, we simulated flowline patterns and tracer signals using (1) a full 3D model that explicitly models the J-shaped geometry of the burrow in a suitable microenvironment surrounding the burrow, (2) a simplified 2D axisymmetric …

Differential Fates Of Emiliania Huxleyi-Derived Fatty Acids And Alkenones In Coastal Marine Sediments: Effects Of The Benthic Crustacean Palaemonetes Pugio, Haibing Ding, Ming-Yi Sun

Journal of Marine Research

In order to examine how benthic crustaceans affect the fates of phytoplankton-derived lipid biomarkers (fatty acids and alkenones) in coastal marine sediments, we incubated Emiliania huxleyi cells in microcosms (pre-sieved sediment cores with and without the grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio ) over six weeks. Crustacean, transport of surface sediments, and distributions of algal lipids were followed during incubations. Crustacean activities enhanced degradation of algal fatty acids (2–4× faster) but had a small impact on algal alkenone degradation (<1.4×) compared to the controls. During the first few days of incubations, alkenone concentrations were enriched while algal fatty acid concentrations were depleted in suspended particles in the overlying water of cores, indicating that P. pugio selectively grazed algal material from sediments and preferentially assimilated fatty acids over alkenones through digestion. Unlike algal fatty acids, alkenones …

Linking Arenicola Marina Irrigation Behavior To Oxygen Transport And Dynamics In Sandy Sediments, Karen Timmermann, Gary T. Banta, Ronnie N. Glud

Journal of Marine Research

In this study we examine how the irrigation behavior of the common lugworm Arenicola marina affects the distribution, transport and dynamics of oxygen in sediments using microelectrodes, planar optodes and diagenetic modeling. The irrigation pattern was characterized by a regular recurring periods of active irrigation lasting approximately 15 min separated by a 15 min rest period. The mean pumping rate during irrigation was 52 ml h−1. Oxygen dynamics and distribution around the tail shaft was closely related to irrigation pattern but independent of pumping rate. During irrigation the oxygen concentration in the burrow was high (>80% air …

Ejaculate Investment In A Promiscuous Rodent, Peromyscus Maniculatus: Effects Of Population Density And Social Role, Tristan A.F. Long, Robert Montgomerie

Biology Faculty Publications

Questions: How does average male investment in ejaculates vary with changing population density (and thus with the risk of sperm competition) in a promiscuous species? Do individual male investment strategies vary with population density?

Data studied: Total testicular mass, somatic mass and annual population density for wild-caught male deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, collected by snap-trapping over a 23-year period in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada.

Search methods: We analysed the relation between mean testicular mass and mouse population densities across years. To investigate individual investment patterns, we compared the relation between total testicular mass and somatic mass among males …

Minimum Contacts In A Borderless World: Voice Over Internet Protocol And The Coming Implosion Of Personal Jurisdiction Theory, Danielle Keats Citron Jan 2006

Minimum Contacts In A Borderless World: Voice Over Internet Protocol And The Coming Implosion Of Personal Jurisdiction Theory, Danielle Keats Citron

Faculty Scholarship

Modern personal jurisdiction theory rests on the twin pillars of state sovereignty and due process. A nonresident’s “minimum contacts” with a forum state are treated as the equivalent of her territorial presence in the state and hence justify a state’s exercise of sovereignty over her. At the same time, the nonresident’s “purposeful availment” of opportunities within the state is seen as implying her agreement to that state’s jurisdiction in exchange for the protection of its laws. This theory presumes that a nonresident directs voice communications to known places by dialing a telephone number’s area code. Voice over Internet Protocol (“VoIP”) …

The Utep Corpus Of Iraqi Arabic, Nigel Ward, David G. Novick, Salamah I. Salamah

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The rules governing turn-taking phenomena are not well understood in general and almost completely undocumented for Arabic. As the first step to modeling these phenomena, we have collected a small corpus of Iraqi Arabic spoken dialogs. The corpus is in three parts. Part A is 110 minutes of unstructured conversations. Parts B1 and B2 are 176 minutes of direction-giving dialogs, most including a greeting phase, a smalltalk phase, a request phase, and a direction-giving phase. Parts A and B1 were recorded with 13 native speakers of Iraqi Arabic, interacting in pairs. In Part B2 the direction-getter is an American with …

Nectin-2-Mediated Entry Of A Syncytial Strain Of Herpes Simplex Virus Via Ph-Independent Fusion With The Plasma Membrane Of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Mark G. Delboy, Jennifer L. Patterson, Aimee M. Hollander, Anthony V. Nicola Jan 2006

Nectin-2-Mediated Entry Of A Syncytial Strain Of Herpes Simplex Virus Via Ph-Independent Fusion With The Plasma Membrane Of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Mark G. Delboy, Jennifer L. Patterson, Aimee M. Hollander, Anthony V. Nicola

Microbiology and Immunology Publications

Background

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can utilize multiple pathways to enter host cells. The factors that determine which route is taken are not clear. Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells that express glycoprotein D (gD)-binding receptors are model cells that support a pH-dependent, endocytic entry pathway for all HSV strains tested to date. Fusion-from-without (FFWO) is the induction of target cell fusion by addition of intact virions to cell monolayers in the absence of viral protein expression. The receptor requirements for HSV-induced FFWO are not known. We used the syncytial HSV-1 strain ANG path as a tool to evaluate the complex …

Surgical Infection Society Guidelines For Vaccination After Traumatic Injury, Thomas R. Howdieshell, Daithi Heffernan, Joseph T. Dipiro

Publications from the Office of the Dean

Background: Recommendations for vaccination of injured patients against infection are evolving. Newly-recognized infections, safety considerations, changing epidemiology, and redefinition of patient groups at risk are factors that may influence vaccine development priorities and recommendations for immunization. However, recommendations must often be formulated based on incomplete data, forcing reliance on expert opinion to address some crucial questions. These guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for the prevention or treatment of infectious morbidity and mortality after traumatic injury, such as soft tissue wounds, human or animal bites, or after splenectomy.

Methods: A panel of experts conducted a thorough review of published literature, …

Trade (Chapter 2 Of The Dutch-Munsee Encounter In America: The Struggle For Sovereignty In The Hudson Valley), Paul Otto

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

"Just as word of Hudson's arrival must have spread among the Indians, so too did news of his discovery spread in Europe. Motivated by the 1deals of material acquisition and driven by economic forces in Europe, Dutch merchants in Amsterdam wasted no time in dispatching trade expeditions after learning of the newly discovered lands and the valuable supply of furs in the Hudson River region. The Munsees, already engaged in trade with other native peoples throughout northeastern North America, welcomed the new source and availability of goods and provided a nexus through which Europeans would have access to Indian markets …
