The Anchor, Volume 119.14: February 8, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

A Pdz-Binding Motif As A Critical Determinant Of Rho Guanine Exchange Factor Function And Cell Phenotype, Miaoliang Liu, Arie Horowitz Feb 2006

A Pdz-Binding Motif As A Critical Determinant Of Rho Guanine Exchange Factor Function And Cell Phenotype, Miaoliang Liu, Arie Horowitz

Dartmouth Scholarship

We identified a Rho guanine exchange factor (GEF) expressed as two splice variants, which differ only in either having or lacking a Postsynaptic density 95, Disk large, Zona occludens-1 (PDZ) motif. The PDZ adaptor protein synectin bound the longer splice variant, Syx1, which was targeted to the plasma membrane in a synectin-dependent manner. The shorter variant, Syx2, was diffusely distributed in the cytoplasm. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) imaging revealed similar differences between the spatial patterns of active RhoA in Syx1 versus Syx2-expressing cells. Expression of Syx1 augmented endothelial cell (EC) migration and tube formation, whereas Syx2 expression did not. …

Perennial Crops For Bio-Fuels And Conservation, Gregory Ruark, Scott J. Josiah, Don Riemenschneider, Timothy Volk Feb 2006

Perennial Crops For Bio-Fuels And Conservation, Gregory Ruark, Scott J. Josiah, Don Riemenschneider, Timothy Volk

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Perennial woody crops have the potential to contribute significantly to the production of bio-fuels while simultaneously helping to provide a wide range of conservation benefits. Among these benefits are increased biological diversity in the landscape, conservation of soil and water resources, maintenance of forest ecosystem productivity and health, contribution to the global carbon cycle, and provision of socioeconomic benefits. Short rotation woody crops, like hybrid poplar and willow, grow rapidly and can reach 15-25 feet in height after only three years. Currently, non-irrigated yields can be sustained at about 5 dry tons/acre/year and are increasing as plant breeding, nutrient management, …

The Place Of Structural Arguments In Contemporary Constitutional Theory, Kenneth Ward Feb 2006

The Place Of Structural Arguments In Contemporary Constitutional Theory, Kenneth Ward

ExpressO

This essay illustrates how our interest in questions of constitutional doctrine makes it difficult to assess structural arguments about judicial authority. In the past forty years, we have witnessed a shift in American constitutional theory. Scholars once assessed judicial authority based on their expectations of how judges should decide cases. In time, many concluded that discretion is an inevitable consequence of constitutional interpretation and therefore sought to justify such authority.

This shift has led some scholars to give greater emphasis to structural arguments. They identify institutional virtues that explain the judiciary’s role in a well ordered government. Although these scholars …

H2-M3-Restricted Cd8+ T Cells Are Not Required For Mhc Class Ib-Restricted Immunity Against Listeria Monocytogenes, Sarah E. F. D'Orazio, Christine A. Shaw, Michael N. Starnbach Feb 2006

H2-M3-Restricted Cd8+ T Cells Are Not Required For Mhc Class Ib-Restricted Immunity Against Listeria Monocytogenes, Sarah E. F. D'Orazio, Christine A. Shaw, Michael N. Starnbach

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Studies using major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-Ia–deficient mice have shown that MHC-Ib–restricted CD8+ T cells can clear infections caused by intracellular pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes. M3-restricted CD8+ T cells, which recognize short hydrophobic N-formylated peptides, appear to comprise a substantial portion of the MHC-Ib–restricted T cell response in the mouse model of L. monocytogenes infection. In this study, we isolated formyltransferase (fmt) mutant strains of L. monocytogenes that lacked the ability to add formyl groups to nascent polypeptides. These fmt mutant Listeria strains did not produce antigens that could be recognized by M3-restricted T …
