Sex Similarities And Differences In Preferences For Short-Term Mates: What, Whether, And Why, Norman P. Li, Douglas T. Kenrick Mar 2006

Sex Similarities And Differences In Preferences For Short-Term Mates: What, Whether, And Why, Norman P. Li, Douglas T. Kenrick

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Are there sex differences in criteria for sexual relationships? The answer depends on what question a researcher asks. Data suggest that, whereas the sexes differ in whether they will enter short-term sexual relationships, they are more similar in what they prioritize in partners for such relationships. However, additional data and context of other findings and theory suggest different underlying reasons. In Studies 1 and 2, men and women were given varying "mate budgets" to design short-term mates and were asked whether they would actually mate with constructed partners. Study 3 used a mate-screening paradigm. Whereas women have been found to …

Tax Assignment And Revenue Sharing In Nigeria: Challenges And Options, S. C. Rapu Mar 2006

Tax Assignment And Revenue Sharing In Nigeria: Challenges And Options, S. C. Rapu

Economic and Financial Review

This paper build on the history as well as the current legal framework of tax assignment and revenue-sharing in Nigeria to identify the challenges while also drawing from the theoretical framework for policy options which will provide for a stable federal system in Nigeria. The paper recommended among others the strengthening of states internal revenue bases, adjustments on the vertical and horizontal revenue-sharing formula, effective compliance with the allocation of the mandatory 10% of states internally generated revenue. The paper concludes that changes to the existing tax assignment and revenue-sharing arrangements will go a long way in protecting our nascent …

Bio-Inspired, Odor-Based Navigation, Maynard John Porter Iii Mar 2006

Bio-Inspired, Odor-Based Navigation, Maynard John Porter Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The ability of moths to locate a member of the opposite sex, by tracking a wind-borne plume of odor molecules, is an amazing reality. Numerous scenarios exist where having this capability embedded into ground-based or aerial vehicles would be invaluable. The main crux of this thesis investigation is the development of a navigation algorithm which gives a UAV the ability to track a chemical plume to its source. Inspiration from the male moth's, in particular Manduca sexta, ability to successfully track a female's pheromone plume was used in the design of both 2-D and 3-D navigation algorithms. The algorithms were …

Spiritual writing, like any type of nonfiction, can be a daunting task for a writer. Not only does the topic lack the certainty that we’re all searching for, but its canyons have been surveyed and examined and trudged by men and women for centuries. Like a travel writer must look at a place as though it is untouched, a spiritual writer must write with the confidence that their words ultimately inform the audience about their own unique motivations.

Refusal Clauses & Pro-Life Pharmacists: How Can We Protect Ourselves From Them., Minh N. Nguyen Mar 2006

Refusal Clauses & Pro-Life Pharmacists: How Can We Protect Ourselves From Them., Minh N. Nguyen

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The decades long pro-life and pro-choice debate recently broadened to now include controversy over reproductive contraception. This controversy stems from doctors refusing to participate in abortion procedures and other healthcare providers, such as pharmacists, declining to fill prescriptions for oral and emergency contraceptives. Pharmacists all over the United States claim religious and moral grounds for refusing to fill prescriptions from doctors and hospitals. This religious fundamentalism creates more than a minor inconvenience for women. The oral and emergency contraceptives in question include birth control pills and the morning after pill, both of which inhibit a woman’s ability to get pregnant. …

Systematics Of The Endangered Mauremys Mutica And Mauremys Annamensis, Jonathan Julio Fong Mar 2006

Systematics Of The Endangered Mauremys Mutica And Mauremys Annamensis, Jonathan Julio Fong

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Almost all turtle species in Asia are going extinct due to the demand for turtle products as food and medicine. A difficulty in creating effective conservation measures is that very little is known about the evolutionary relationships between populations and species. It is believed that several lineages we are currently calling species could in actuality be a complex of several species. One of these supposed species is the Yellow Pond Turtle, Mauremys mutica. Previous research has shown this group to have a tremendous amount of morphological and molecular diversity. In this study, I have used a combination of known-locality, farm, …

The Battle For Vieques' Future, Katherine Mccaffrey Mar 2006

The Battle For Vieques' Future, Katherine Mccaffrey

Department of Anthropology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This article analyzes power dynamics in Vieques, Puerto Rico in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. Navy's closure of its five fire range on the island. The essay examines several aspects of Vieques' continuing struggle in a post-Navy world. It considers residents' hopes and views of different kinds of development; the ramifications of former Navy-occupied land being classified as "environmentally protected"; and finally, potential organizing principles for directing Vieques' development, looking at the challenges and opportunities facing activists. The essay considers how cultural nationalism not only offers potential building blocks for collective action and opposition to privatization, but an egalitarian …

Muslim Profiles Post 9/11: Is Racial Profiling An Effective Counterterrorist Measure And Does It Violate The Right To Be Free From Discrimination?, Bernard E. Harcourt Mar 2006

Muslim Profiles Post 9/11: Is Racial Profiling An Effective Counterterrorist Measure And Does It Violate The Right To Be Free From Discrimination?, Bernard E. Harcourt

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Racial profiling as a defensive counterterrorism measure necessarily implicates a rights trade-off: if effective, racial profiling limits the right of young Muslim men to be free from discrimination in order to promote the security and well-being of others. Proponents of racial profiling argue that it is based on simple statistical fact and represents "just smart law enforcement." Opponents of racial profiling, like New York City police commissioner Raymond Kelly, say that it is dangerous and "just nuts." As a theoretical matter, both sides are partly right. Racial profiling in the context of counterterrorism measures may increase the detection of terrorist …

Animal Rights Without Controversy, Cass R. Sunstein, Jeff Leslie Mar 2006

Animal Rights Without Controversy, Cass R. Sunstein, Jeff Leslie

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Many consumers would be willing to pay something to reduce the suffering of animals used as food. The problem is that existing markets do not disclose the relevant treatment of animals, even though that treatment would trouble many consumers. Steps should be taken to promote disclosure, so as to fortify market processes and to promote democratic discussion of the treatment of animals. In the context of animal welfare, a serious problem is that people’s practices ensure outcomes that defy their existing moral commitments. A disclosure regime could improve animal welfare without making it necessary to resolve the most deeply contested …

Today’S Challenges And Resolutions Regarding Church Music, Philip R. Mcfarland Mar 2006

Today’S Challenges And Resolutions Regarding Church Music, Philip R. Mcfarland

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to first affirm the fact that music is one of the most powerful mediums that can control and influence people today. By emphasizing music’s impact, the objective for churches and pastors is to understand that although music plays a major part within church worship, it is only one of many functions of the church. This thesis will serve the purpose of helping pastors, church leaders, and Christians to understand the influence of music that can lead to potential challenges and problems, and to give biblically based, historical, and practical resolutions. Christians must not let …

Cell-Signalling Dynamics In Time And Space, Boris N. Kholodenko Phd, Dsci Mar 2006

Cell-Signalling Dynamics In Time And Space, Boris N. Kholodenko Phd, Dsci

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The specificity of cellular responses to receptor stimulation is encoded by the spatial and temporal dynamics of downstream signalling networks. Computational models provide insights into the intricate relationships between stimuli and responses and reveal mechanisms that enable networks to amplify signals, reduce noise and generate discontinuous bistable dynamics or oscillations. These temporal dynamics are coupled to precipitous spatial gradients of signalling activities, which guide pivotal intracellular processes, but also necessitate mechanisms to facilitate signal propagation across a cell.

Nonlinear Dynamics Derived From The Oxyhalogen Oxidation Of Selected Organosulfur Compounds, Edward Chickwana Mar 2006

Nonlinear Dynamics Derived From The Oxyhalogen Oxidation Of Selected Organosulfur Compounds, Edward Chickwana

Dissertations and Theses

Structure, stability, kinetics and mechanisms of oxidation of some physiologically important organosulfur compounds were studied and the results obtained show that oxidation occurs mainly at the reactive sulfur center of the molecules. These results not only display the usual S-oxygenation pathways that have been observed with most thiocarbamides, but also show dimerization and cyclization.

The oxidation of guanylthiourea, GTU, was studied in the presence of mildly acidic iodate and the strong oxidants bromate and bromine. The GTU reaction dynamics with iodate show clock reaction characteristics and oligooscillatory formation of iodine both in excess oxidant and reductant. The major oxidation product …

Conservation Of The Pho Regulon In Pseudomonas Fluorescens Pf0-1, Russell D. Monds, Peter D. Newell, Julia A. Schwartzman, George A. O'Toole

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Pho regulon integrates the sensing of environmental inorganic phosphate (Pi) availability with coregulation of gene expression, mediating an adaptive response to Pi limitation. Many aspects of the Pho regulon have been addressed in studies of Escherichia coli; however, it is unclear how transferable this knowledge is to other bacterial systems. Here, we report work to discern the conservation of the Pho regulon in Pseudomonas fluorescens Pf0-1. We demonstrate by mutational studies that PhoB/PhoR and the Pst system have conserved functions in the regulation of Pi-induced phosphatase activities, as well as expression of other Pi-regulated genes. A genetic screen was …

Bel-Imperia: The (Early) Modern Woman In Thomas Kyd’S Spanish Tragedy, Ann Mccauley Basso Mar 2006

Bel-Imperia: The (Early) Modern Woman In Thomas Kyd’S Spanish Tragedy, Ann Mccauley Basso

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

At the heart of Thomas Kyd's revenge tragedy The Spanish Tragedy lies an arranged marriage around which all of the other action revolves. Bel-Imperia of Spain has been betrothed against her will to Prince Balthazar of Portugal, but she is no ordinary woman, and she has plans of her own. Bel-Imperia's unwillingness to participate in the arranged marriage is indicative of the rise of the companionate marriage; it represents a rejection of the arranged marriage that dominated upper class society in earlier years.

This study seeks to throw light upon early modern attitudes towards marriage, focusing particularly on the arranged …

Hydrodynamic Mediation Of Density-Dependent Growth And Adult-Juvenile Interactions Of A Spionid Polychaete, Brent T. Hentschel, Amy A. Larson Mar 2006

Hydrodynamic Mediation Of Density-Dependent Growth And Adult-Juvenile Interactions Of A Spionid Polychaete, Brent T. Hentschel, Amy A. Larson

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Abstract We performed an experiment to test the effects of adult density on the growth rates of juvenile Polydora cornuta. Our experiment was performed in three identical counter-rotating annular flumes, each set to one of three different flow speeds for a period of 3 d (U 5mm = 3, 6, or 12 cm s-1 , where U5mm = velocity measured 5 mm above bottom). We implanted replicate vials containing a premeasured juvenile P. cornuta and either 0, 2, or 5 adults into a 2-cm layer of sediment in the flume. The relative growth rates of the juveniles …

"The Play's The Thing": Considering The Morality Play In Morality Play, Heather Kennedy Mcdonald Mar 2006

"The Play's The Thing": Considering The Morality Play In Morality Play, Heather Kennedy Mcdonald

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The paucity of details about secular theater in the fourteenth century allows Barry Unsworth to imagine what a troupe of players would look like if we could examine them right at the time when "a totally new form of drama was being born" (Unsworth, "Barry Unsworth on Fourteenth Century Life and Theatre"). In his novel Morality Play, he imagines poor, itinerant players competing with the large guilds that put on an entire cycle of plays with the backing of unlimited funds. He conjectures that these players would be an amalgamation of different types of troupes that endeavored …

Wiping Blood From The Walls: Medea’S Pleasures Of Terror, Clark Lunberry Mar 2006

Wiping Blood From The Walls: Medea’S Pleasures Of Terror, Clark Lunberry

English Faculty Research and Scholarship

I was there and then I wasn’t. The actors were before me and then they weren’t. The curtain opened, it closed, and—in the play of appearances and disappearances—something was seen in the vanishings. Remaining, what I now write is a kind of recollected narrative, a reportorial account of British director Deborah Warner’s recent adaptation of Euripides’ Medea. As a member of its audience one evening, I look back from the strict vantage of the remembered event, from the dual perspective of having seen the performance, but of seeing it no longer, of having been a spectator to the play, but …

The Boilerplate Puzzle, Douglas G. Baird

Michigan Law Review

The warranty that comes with your laptop computer is one of its many product attributes. The laptop has a screen of a particular size. Its microprocessors work at a particular speed, and the battery lasts a given amount of time between recharging. The hard drive has a certain capacity and mean time to failure. There is an instruction manual, online technical support (or lack thereof), and software. Then there are the warranties that the seller makes (or does not make) that are also part of the bundle. Just as I know the size of the screen, but nothing about the …

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair Mar 2006

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Teaching about the Middle Ages in French culture or literature courses is always an enlightening experience to me because of the richness of symbols, events, and starting points occurring during this time period. Very often, when thinking about the Middle Ages, Christianity, chivalry, and nobility come to mind, all values still of high importance in contemporary Western societies. However, medieval culture presents itself with an array of other behaviors and values, some of which may today be considered as offensive and even sometimes “alienating”: primitive, barbaric, or even animalistic forms of behavior.

Taiwan, China, And Yang Mu's Alternative To National Narratives, Lisa L.M Wong Mar 2006

Taiwan, China, And Yang Mu's Alternative To National Narratives, Lisa L.M Wong

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Taiwan, China, and Yang Mu's Alternative to National Narratives," Lisa L.M. Wong examines the ways Yang Mu's poetry acts as an echo and a dissent to the mainstream national narratives in Taiwan between the late 1970s and early 1980s. During this decade, identity discourse has developed from othering Westernism to preserve Chinese cultural-national integrity to espousing a native Taiwanese identity against the Chinese one. Each of Yang's poems in Wong's analysis is a field of contention, peopled by different subjects such as the colonizers, the native Taiwanese, the female, and the diasporant, who articulate contested stories of …
