The Anchor, Volume 119.20: April 12, 2006, Hope College
The Anchor, Volume 119.20: April 12, 2006, Hope College
The Anchor: 2006
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
Low Doses Of Memantine Disrupt Memory In Adult Rats, Catherine Creeley, David Wozniak, Joanne Labruyere, George Taylor, John Olney
Low Doses Of Memantine Disrupt Memory In Adult Rats, Catherine Creeley, David Wozniak, Joanne Labruyere, George Taylor, John Olney
Psychology Faculty Works
Memantine, a drug recently approved for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, has been characterized as a unique NMDA antagonist that confers protection against excitotoxic neurodegeneration without the serious side effects that other NMDA antagonists are known to cause. In the present study, we determined what dose of memantine is required to protect the adult rat brain against an NMDA receptor-mediated excitotoxic process and then tested that dose and a range of lower doses to determine whether the drug in this dose range is associated with significant side effects. Consistent with previous research, we found that memantine confers a neuroprotective effect beginning …

A Digital Forensic Practitioner's Guide To Giving Evidence In A Court Of Law, Shayne Sherman
A Digital Forensic Practitioner's Guide To Giving Evidence In A Court Of Law, Shayne Sherman
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
An expert in IT forensics can discover significant and damning evidence that may convict a suspect. However, no matter how momentous the evidence or how clever you may have been at recovering it, if you can’t present the evidence in a coherent and understandable way to the court the case may be lost. This paper will attempt to provide you with some translation tools and methods to assist the IT professional in giving comprehensible forensic evidence in a criminal prosecution or at Industrial Relations Commissions to jurors and the judiciary about highly complex IT concepts and recovery methodology. By using …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is an etiological component of the bovine respiratory tract disease complex. Infection with BRSV following vaccination, or re-infection following natural infection is common since protection is incomplete. The objectives of this study were to create plasmid DNA constructs encoding single or multiple N-glycosylation-site deletion BRSV fusion (F) proteins, and evaluate their expression in cell culture, and potential to induce anti-BRSV F antibody responses in BALB/ c mice. Four plasmid DNAs were constructed, each encoding 1-4 N-glycosylation-site deletions: Gly4, Gly2/4, Gly1/2/4 and Gly1/2/3/4. Each of the N-glycosylation-site deletion BRSV F proteins were expressed …
Concealing To Reveal: Modesty In Pope John Paul Ii’S Theology Of The Body, Katinka Nadine Ellen Evers
Concealing To Reveal: Modesty In Pope John Paul Ii’S Theology Of The Body, Katinka Nadine Ellen Evers
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Responding to a need in the sphere of serious academic scholarship to address the topic of modesty, this paper delves into that theme. It examines the use and importance of the term ‘modesty’ in relation to comparable words, providing a definition of modesty that is useful for further theological discussion. It then incorporates Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body as a helpful tool in understanding the concept of modesty. Finally, this paper concludes with some implications this theological exercise entails, both for the particular sphere of sexual morality, and the broader spectrum of anthropological questions such as the …
The Enthymeme’S Role In Modern Discourse, Ryan Meehan
The Enthymeme’S Role In Modern Discourse, Ryan Meehan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, I wish to demonstrate how enthymemic argument pervades modern discourse. First, I will define the enthymeme in Aristotelian terms and compare its qualities to its sibling, the syllogism. Next, I will attempt to demonstrate how the enthymeme functions, paying close attention to its psychological effects as well as analyzing how the media helps promote enthymemic discourse. Finally, I will propose a way that composition instructors can harness the idea of the enthymeme to facilitate critical thinking in the classroom. The purpose of the paper is to provide evidence that a rebirth of this classical term is in …

Tampa’S Lafayette Street Bridge: Building A New South City, Lucy D. Jones
Tampa’S Lafayette Street Bridge: Building A New South City, Lucy D. Jones
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
The late nineteenth and early twentieth century was a time of dynamic social and political change for Tampa, a growing city on Florida’s west coast. These changes led Tampa’s commercial-civic elite to look beyond the law, the militia, and the church for ways to maintain their sense of order. This thesis illustrates non-violent enforcement of the status quo via public works, specifically bridge construction over the Hillsborough River. Over a period of three decades, three different bridges were built at the same place, at Lafayette Street. Each time the bridge was built or replaced, it was ostensibly for a different …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Thyroid hormone (TH) is critical for cardiac development and heart function. In heart disease, TH metabolism is abnormal, and many biochemical and functional alterations mirror hypothyroidism. Although TH therapy has been advocated for treating heart disease, a clear benefit of TH has yet to be established, possibly because of peripheral actions of TH. To assess the potential efficacy of TH in treating heart disease, type 2 deiodinase (D2), which converts the prohormone thyroxine to active triiodothyronine (T3), was expressed transiently in mouse hearts by using the tetracycline transactivator system. Increased cardiac D2 activity led to elevated cardiac T3 levels and …
