The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2006-04-14, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 2001-2011

This edition of the College of Wooster student run newspaper was published on April 14 of 2006, and it is eight pages long. A little over 80% of students who responded to a survey do not like the new Double Core sculpture, and a number of students dislike it so much that they created a Facebook group. The college is in search of a new president to fill in Stanton Hales' shoes after his retirement. The current exhibition on display in Special Collections is titled, "What to Wear? Women's Dress Reform in American." Karin Johnson wrote an article about the …

Animal Husbandry At Tell El Hesi (Israel): Results From Zooarchaeological And Isotopic Analysis, Shannon Marie Peck-Janssen Apr 2006

Animal Husbandry At Tell El Hesi (Israel): Results From Zooarchaeological And Isotopic Analysis, Shannon Marie Peck-Janssen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Located in today’s southern Israel, Tell el Hesi provides archaeologists with important clues to political and social changes in the ancient Near East. Zooarchaeological and stable isotopic analyses were conducted to evaluate shifts in animal husbandry practices during changing socioeconomic and sociopolitical conditions in the southern Levant.

During the Early Bronze Age, Tell el Hesi thrived as an agricultural grain producing center for the southern Levant. The acropolis served as both a storage and redistribution center for the inhabitants of Tell el Hesi. Coinciding with the collapse of the southern Levant, Tell el Hesi was abandoned throughout the Middle Bronze …

Before The Inca: Prehistoric Dietary Transitions In The Argentine Cuyo, Nicole Shelnut Apr 2006

Before The Inca: Prehistoric Dietary Transitions In The Argentine Cuyo, Nicole Shelnut

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A dietary reconstruction was performed in order to understand changing prehistoric subsistence patterns in the Central Andean geographical area of the Argentine Cuyo that includes the provinces of San Juan and Mendoza. Archaeologically, the Cuyo is also known as a boundary between Andean agriculturalists and the foragers of Patagonia. One hypothesis being tested is whether this area was one of the last South American cultural groups to convert to maize cultivation, probably around 2000 BP. The process of stable isotope analysis is used to reconstruct the diets of individuals, as it reveals the relative proportions of C3 and C4 plants …

Middle Woodland Mound Distribution And Ceremonialism In The Apalachicola Valley, Northwest Florida, Anya C. Frashuer Apr 2006

Middle Woodland Mound Distribution And Ceremonialism In The Apalachicola Valley, Northwest Florida, Anya C. Frashuer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

University of South Florida field investigations in northwest Florida’s Apalachicola Valley have resulted in the relocation of some lost mounds from the Middle Woodland period (ca. A.D. 1 to 650) by trekking through the forest and consulting with avocationals and collectors. This thesis project was triggered by a collector’s donation of some Swift Creek pots and the attempt to relocate the mound from which they came. In the 1970s, Gardner and Nidy recorded this site, named Poplar Springs Mound, categorized as Middle Woodland due to its Swift Creek and Weeden Island pottery. The donated collection contained pottery of the Swift …

Joyce...Beckett...Dedalus...Molloy: A Study In Abjection And Masochism, Patricia A. Mccabe-Remmell Apr 2006

Joyce...Beckett...Dedalus...Molloy: A Study In Abjection And Masochism, Patricia A. Mccabe-Remmell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Irish male identity in James Joyce's and Samuel Beckett's novels shows evidence of abjection. The oppressive natures of the Church and State in Ireland contribute to abjection in some Irish men. Furthermore, the state of abject being can lead to masochistic practices. According to Julia Kristeva, abjection translates into a ìconceptual spaceî that has its roots in the Freudian Oedipal complex. Kristeva, following Lacan, also points to the connection between abjection and language. Joyceís character Stephen Dedalus and Beckettís Molloy/Moran both utilize this conceptual space and language in the narrative provides clues to their abject states. Joyceís A Portrait of …

Customizing And Using A Popular Online Information Literacy Tutorial: One Library’S Experience, Robert Flatley, William Jefferson Apr 2006

Customizing And Using A Popular Online Information Literacy Tutorial: One Library’S Experience, Robert Flatley, William Jefferson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

To teach information literacy, many colleges and universities use a version of TILT (the Texas Information Tutorial) or Searchpath, a modification of TILT by Western Michigan University. This paper describes our experience customizing Searchpath for Kutztown University’s Rohrbach Library, including the impetus behind the project, the process of customizing Searchpath, the project pilot, collaborative efforts, and challenges encountered. The authors also discuss the decision to select Searchpath rather than TILT, how Kutztown’s version of tutorial is currently being used, and future plans for the product, along with suggestions to those considering Searchpath for their libraries.

Senseless Kindness: The Politics Of Cost Benefit Analysis, Louis E. Wolcher Apr 2006

Senseless Kindness: The Politics Of Cost Benefit Analysis, Louis E. Wolcher

ExpressO

This essay identifies a social phenomenon that the Russian-Jewish novelist and war correspondent Vasily Grossman calls "senseless kindness." Emerging without prior warning from certain face-to-face encounters between human beings, the striking reversal of preferences that characterizes this phenomenon can be used to cast a critical light on the practices of Cost Benefit Analysis ("CBA"). Not only does senseless kindness highlight the troubling theoretical problem of determining the "correct" ex ante—the point in time at which CBA measures people's preferences—it also points towards the possibility of a more general critique of CBA's indifference to how preferences are formed and expressed. The …

The Constitution As Idea: Defining Describing Deciding In Kelo, Marc L. Roark

ExpressO

In June 2005, the Supreme Court in a Five to Four Decision marked its most controversial decision in recent memory. The case of Kelo v. City of New London, set off a fire storm of response to the Court’s ruling that economic development takings satisfied the Fifth Amendment. This essay is about Kelo. It is about how the Court uses words, how the defining ability of words create institutional space in which the Court operates, and which defines things beyond the words.

Video-Based Person Identification Using Facial Strain Maps As A Biometric, Vasant Manohar Apr 2006

Video-Based Person Identification Using Facial Strain Maps As A Biometric, Vasant Manohar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research on video-based face recognition has started getting increased attention in the past few years. Algorithms developed for video have an advantage from the availability of plentitude of frames in videos to extract information from. Despite this fact, most research in this direction has limited the scope of the problem to the application of still image-based approaches to some selected frames on which 2D algorithms are expected to perform well. It can be realized that such an approach only uses the spatial information contained in video and does not incorporate the temporal structure.Only recently has the intelligence community begun to …

Spatial Patterns And Response To Wave Exposure Of Shallow Water Algal Assemblages Across The Canarian Archipelago: A Multiscaled Approach, Fernando Tuya, Ricardo J. Haroun Apr 2006

Spatial Patterns And Response To Wave Exposure Of Shallow Water Algal Assemblages Across The Canarian Archipelago: A Multiscaled Approach, Fernando Tuya, Ricardo J. Haroun

School of Natural Sciences Publications

We conducted a mensurative survey to investigate spatial variability and the effect of wave exposure at a range of spatial scales including islands (100s of kilometres apart), locations within islands (10s of kilometres apart), and sites within locations (100s of meters apart), on the composition, abundance and distribution of shallow water algal assemblages across subtidal hard bottoms of the Canarian Archipelago (eastern Atlantic). A multi-scaled hierarchical sampling design provided the framework for quantifying the variation among samples due to each spatial scale and level of wave exposure. Haphazardly placed 50 x 50 cm quadrats were deployed in shallow rocky-reefs to …

Personal Firewalls - Testing Robustness, Patryk Szewczyk, Craig Valli Apr 2006

Personal Firewalls - Testing Robustness, Patryk Szewczyk, Craig Valli

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Consumers require personal firewalls that are highly secure, easy to use, configurable and uptodate with the latest signatures to detect malicious network activity. Robustness tests were performed on a selection of the ten most popular firewalls by market share. The test system used was a vanilla installation of Windows XP with SP2 and all the most recent updates and patches. Each firewall was installed with its default configuration following the didactic instructions given by the firewall. The investigation was carried out by performing an installation, penetration, performance and update test. A third party bitTorrent application was also installed mimicking a …
