To What Extent Does Personal Relevance Impact Behavior After Attending A Laboratory Safety Training Session?, Sandra E. Fouch
To What Extent Does Personal Relevance Impact Behavior After Attending A Laboratory Safety Training Session?, Sandra E. Fouch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Each year in the United States, millions of dollars are spent to educate adults. Therefore, there has been a flurry of interest in answering the question, ''How do adults learn?'' There are different answers and therefore, different theories. The method selected for this study incorporated Andragogic learning into the laboratory safety training at Carnegie Mellon University. This design involved a number of features that recognized the essential maturity of the learner.;The training was developed to present the Laboratory Safety and Hazardous Waste Trainings at Carnegie Mellon University. The new training provided additional discussion points to allow the adults to interact …

Recoiling From Religion, Marc O. Degirolami
Recoiling From Religion, Marc O. Degirolami
San Diego Law Review
DeGirolami here reviews a book by Professor Marci A. Hamilton, God vs. The Gavel: Religion and the Rule of Law (Cambridge Univ. Press 2005). This review ultimately critiques Hamilton's notion of "the public good", first explicating the structure and theory of the book. Hamilton was counsel for religious accommodation cases dealing with horrific child abuse and neglect with subsequent failure to act by religious institutions. From these cases she forms in her book the theory that the phrase "free exercise" in the U.S. Constitution does not give constitutional protection for religious exercise in the public square at all, because she …
Eugenics, Rejuvenation, And Bulgakov's Journey Into The Heart Of Dogness, Yvonne Howell
Eugenics, Rejuvenation, And Bulgakov's Journey Into The Heart Of Dogness, Yvonne Howell
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
In this article, I propose a new reading of Heart of a Dog, one that takes seriously Professor Preobrazhenskii's claim that his real interest is "eugenics, the improvement of the human species." The Professor's eugenics project is not limited to a cosmetic, physical improvement of human subjects; it anticipates urging humankind toward a higher stage of intellectual and spiritual development as well. Therefore, when he mistakenly transforms a dog into a man instead of a more intelligent dog, he considers the experiment an abject failure because the new man "no longer has a dog's heart, but a human one, …

Verbal Behavior: An Empirical Review Of Establishing Operations, Gary R. Hoerth
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Establishing Operations are steeped in the science Applied Behavior Analysis and verbal behavior. Their principles are utilized daily in schools, clinics and treatment centers. The purpose of this study was to review the research literature of this principle to affirm its scientific base and identify specific strategies that can be used by educators and practitioners. Results affirmed its scientific base and identified numerous strategies for immediate use. As ABA practitioners state, "These principles are thought to be of value only if in the hands of people who use them to improve the lives of others" (Carbone, 2004).
Preventive Treatment Of Migraine, Stephen Silberstein
Preventive Treatment Of Migraine, Stephen Silberstein
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Migraine is a common episodic pain disorder, the treatment of which can be acute to stop an attack or preventive to reduce the frequency, duration or severity of attacks. Preventive treatment is used when attacks are frequent or disabling. Many different medication groups are used for preventive treatment, including β-blockers, antidepressants and antiepileptic drugs. Their mechanisms of action include raising the threshold to migraine activation, enhancing antinociception, inhibiting cortical spreading depression, inhibiting peripheral and central sensitization, blocking neurogenic inflammation and modulating sympathetic, parasympathetic or 5-HT tone. In this article, I review evidence of the effectiveness of migraine preventive drugs. I …

Across Arabia With Lehi And Sariah: “Truth Shall Spring Out Of The Earth”, Warren P. Aston
Across Arabia With Lehi And Sariah: “Truth Shall Spring Out Of The Earth”, Warren P. Aston
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Aston draws on his own research in Yemen and Oman as well as on the work of other scholars and researchers to explore two locations in the Book of Mormon account of Lehi’s journey through Arabia: Nahom and Bountiful. Preliminarily, Aston highlights Nephi’s own directional indications for each leg of the journey, considers the relevance of existing trade routes, and suggests relative durations of stops along the way. He reviews the research on the tribal area associated with Nahom, including the discovery of an altar dating to roughly 600 bc that bears the tribal name NHM—possibly the first archaeological evidence …
Refining The Spotlight On Lehi And Sariah, S. Kent Brown
Refining The Spotlight On Lehi And Sariah, S. Kent Brown
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Royal Skousen’s endeavor to recover the original text of the Book of Mormon is more complicated than it seems because it involves more than simply reproducing the original manuscript. Rather, what Skousen means by “original text” is the very language that appeared on the Urim and Thummim. Every subsequent step, such as Joseph’s reading, his scribes’ understanding and transcribing of that utterance, and Oliver Cowdery’s copying of the manuscript for the printer, exposed the text to the possibility of human subjectivity and error. This paper explains the nature and scope of Skousen’s monumental undertaking and presents some of the methods …
Clustering Of Independent Dairy Operators For Generation Of Bio-Renewable Energy: A Feasibility Analysis, Sean P. Hurley, James J. Ahern, Douglas Williams
Clustering Of Independent Dairy Operators For Generation Of Bio-Renewable Energy: A Feasibility Analysis, Sean P. Hurley, James J. Ahern, Douglas Williams
Agribusiness
According to the California Agricultural Statistical Service (CASS), California had almost 1.7 million dairy cows in 2003. These cows generated approximately four billion dollars in revenue, making the California Dairy industry the largest agricultural commodity in the state. These California dairies are estimated to have produced roughly thirty million metric tons of manure in 2003. According to the 2002 USDA census, eighty-seven percent of the dairy cows in California are located on farms of five hundred or more cows. Furthermore, the dairy industry is heavily concentrated in eight counties of California. This high concentration of dairies in the state implies …

The Brightening Light On The Journey Of Lehi And Sariah, Daniel B. Mckinlay
The Brightening Light On The Journey Of Lehi And Sariah, Daniel B. Mckinlay
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Until now, nearly all commentaries on the Book of Mormon have focused mainly on issues of doctrine rather than beginning with the text itself. Royal Skousen’s critical text project does the opposite by treating the text itself on the word and phrase level. Skousen weighs nearly all possible evidence to deduce the events that may have led to the variations seen in the texts and to draw conclusions about which readings are most likely original. Some conclusions may surprise readers, but Skousen is more interested in candidly documenting what the texts reveal than in interpreting all the implications. Several lengthy …
An Archaeologist's View, Jeffrey R. Chadwick
An Archaeologist's View, Jeffrey R. Chadwick
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Royal Skousen’s most significant contribution to Book of Mormon scholarship, this paper states, is in openly and systematically detailing the thousands of variants that occur across two manuscripts and twenty editions and showing that these variations do not affect the message or validity of the book as a witness of Jesus Christ. Skousen’s work also offers new insights into the process of translating and publishing the Book of Mormon. Though the work of translation appears to have involved a number of different methods, we can nevertheless be sure that the Book of Mormon was translated by the “gift and power …
In Search Of Lehi's Trail—30 Years Later, Lynn M. Hilton
In Search Of Lehi's Trail—30 Years Later, Lynn M. Hilton
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Some critics of the Book of Mormon have suggested that Joseph Smith produced the book through a process known as “automatic writing,” a rapid flow of language claimed to be generated through paranormal means such as trance-like states or claimed communications with spirits. This paper presents an overview of some prominent claims of automatic writing and examines the historical and scientific evidence for the authenticity of at least some of these cases. After discussing the similarities between these works and the Book of Mormon, the paper outlines a number of features in the Book of Mormon that clearly differentiate it …

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In his effort to correct and preserve the original text of the Book of the Mormon, Royal Skousen has also increased our understanding of and appreciation for this volume of sacred scripture. Skousen’s close examination of the use of words and phrases throughout the book highlights its intertextuality and demonstrates that Book of Mormon authors were aware of and influenced by the words of previous authors. Moreover, restoring the original text helps clarify some vague constructions and should also caution us against putting too much emphasis on the exact wording of the present Book of Mormon. Skousen’s analysis of how …
Birds Along Lehi's Trail, Stephen L. Carr
Birds Along Lehi's Trail, Stephen L. Carr
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Royal Skousen’s work on his Book of Mormon critical text project demonstrates that he is an able textual critic who employs sound judgment and proven methods to uncover the original text of the Book of Mormon. In many cases, these decisions seem counterintuitive to untrained readers, but Skousen correctly applies the principle that a more awkward reading is most likely original. He also shows his ability to make conjectural emendations for which no direct textual evidence is available. In every case, Skousen clearly lays out his reasoning so that readers who disagree with his inferences can examine the evidence for …
The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner In The Use Of Homeopathy In Healthcare, Misty Mathis Harris
The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner In The Use Of Homeopathy In Healthcare, Misty Mathis Harris
MSN Research Projects
Homeopathy is the administration of diluted substances, derived from plants, minerals, or animal products, that would in a healthy person induce symptoms of the disease treated (Skinner, 1996). Samuel Hahnermann, the founder of homeopathy, insisted that homeopathy is the restoration of the bioenergetic field surrounding the life force (Skinner, 1996) . The purpose of this project was to develop a nurse practitioner knowledgebase regarding the use of homeopathy. Martha Rogers' Theory of Unitary Human Beings served as the theoretical foundation for this clinical project and guided the systematic review of literature. The consideration of the use of homeopathy by nurse …

Diversity And Abundance Of Small Mammals In The Serengeti Kopjes, Tanzania, C. D. Timbuka, J. D. Kabigumila
Tanzania Journal of Science
Diversity and abundance of small mammals in the Serengeti kopjes were studied between November 2000 and February 2002. From 22,500 trap-nights and 3,300 bucket-nights, 4,903 small mammals in 18 species, 14 genera, 6 families and 3 orders were recorded. Muridae was the most dominant family with nine species. The highest number of species was recorded in the Maasai (14), Mbuzi Mawe (13) and Seronera (12) kopjes. The least number of species recorded in the Simba, Barafu and Wogakuria kopjes, with eight species each. Species diversity was highest in the Maasai kopjes (H'=2.337) and lowest in the Wogakuria kopjes (H'=1.794), with …

Occurrence Of Metacercariae Of Diplostomum And Tylodelphys Species (Diplostomidae) In Clarias Species (Clariidae) Fishes From Lake Victoria, M. J. Musiba, G. Nkwengulila
Tanzania Journal of Science
The localisation and abundance of the metacercariae of Diplostomum and Tylodelphys species among the clariids of Lake Victoria were investigated between April and December 2001. Four species viz. Clarias gariepinus (271), C. alluaudi (65), C. werneri (50) and C. liocephalus (47) were examined, but only C. gariepinus was infected in the brain case and along the nasal cavity. Prevalence of metacercariae was high (>70%). Prevalence and mean intensity were similar between male and female fish. Mean intensity increased with fish size and declined in larger fish for D. mashonense; but declined with the increase in fish size for Tylodelphys …
Stable Isotope Compositions Of Organic Carbon And Contents Of Organic Carbon And Nitrogen Of Lacustrine Sediments From Sub-Arid Northern Tanzania, Ann Muzuka
Tanzania Journal of Science
The stable isotope compositions of organic carbon (OC), and contents of OC and nitrogen for four sediment cores recovered from lakes Makat (located in the Ngorongoro Crater), Ndutu and Masek (located in the Serengeti Plains) are used to document sources of organic matter (OM) and climatic changes in sub-arid northern Tanzania during the late Pleistocene-Holocene period. Accelerate mass spectrometer (AMS) 14C ages on total OM for sediments collected from the Ngorongoro Crater Lake indicate that the sedimentation rate is approximately 17 cm/ka. The δC values from the 20 cm long core (short core) show a downcore increase, whereas that of …
The Equivalence Approach To Securities Regulation, Tzung-Bor Wei
The Equivalence Approach To Securities Regulation, Tzung-Bor Wei
ExpressO
Abstract
In the past, academics and regulators debated two competing approaches to international securities regulation, namely “harmonization” and “regulatory competition.” More recently, a third approach to securities regulation has emerged – the “equivalence” approach. Under this model, a host country exempts foreign firms from certain host country rules when the firms’ home country rules are sufficiently similar, or “equivalent.” Many regulators have come to embrace equivalence, which is rapidly becoming a key principle in international finance.
This paper studies the concept of equivalence. It begins by defining “equivalence,” highlighting that different regulators manipulate the term to give it contrasting meanings. …

PREP Reports & Publications
This project was conducted as a contract between the City of Dover and the University of New Hampshire, with additional funding supplied by the New Hampshire Estuaries Project. The overall goal was to restore as much bottom area as possible (with available funds) of formerly productive oyster bottom in two areas, the Bellamy River and Pomeroy Cove (Piscataqua River). The restored areas were intended as a contribution to the long-term NHEP goal of restoring 20 acres of oyster bottom by 2010 (Trowbridge 2003). Five objectives were addressed: (1) site surveys, map production, and final restoration protocol development; (2) remote setting …

Circadian Rhythmicity By Autocatalysis, Arun Mehra, Christian I. Hong, Mi Shi, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap, Peter Ruoff
Dartmouth Scholarship
The temperature compensated in vitro oscillation of cyanobacterial KaiC phosphorylation, the first example of a thermodynamically closed system showing circadian rhythmicity, only involves the three Kai proteins (KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC) and ATP. In this paper, we describe a model in which the KaiA- and KaiB-assisted autocatalytic phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of KaiC are the source for circadian rhythmicity. This model, based upon autocatalysis instead of transcription-translation negative feedback, shows temperature-compensated circadian limit-cycle oscillations with KaiC phosphorylation profiles and has period lengths and rate constant values that are consistent with experimental observations.
The Case Against Mandatory Annual Director Elections And Shareholders' Meetings, William K. Sjostrom
The Case Against Mandatory Annual Director Elections And Shareholders' Meetings, William K. Sjostrom
ExpressO
The article examines the mandatory requirement under state corporate law and stock exchange listing standards that public corporations hold annual shareholders’ meetings for the election of directors. Specifically, I question the value of requiring corporations to (1) elect directors annually, and (2) hold shareholders’ meetings annually. I critique the various justifications for these requirements and find none of them persuasive. I then explore a different approach taken by Minnesota with respect to the frequency of director elections and shareholders’ meetings and conclude that the approach is superior to the current scheme. Recognizing, however, that any less strict state approach is …
