C-Mpl Expression In Osteoclast Progenitors: A Novel Role For Thrombopoietin In Regulating Osteoclast Development, Calvin Langston Toure Barnes Oct 2006

C-Mpl Expression In Osteoclast Progenitors: A Novel Role For Thrombopoietin In Regulating Osteoclast Development, Calvin Langston Toure Barnes

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

A new paradigm has evolved in which multiple regulatory interactions between the skeletal and hematopoietic systems have been identified. Previous studies have demonstrated that megakaryocytes (MK) play a dual role in skeletal homeostasis by stimulating osteoblast proliferation and simultaneously inhibiting osteoclast (OC) development. Here we identify a novel regulatory pathway in which the main MK growth factor, thrombopoietin (TPO), directly regulates osteoclastogenesis. To study the role of TPO in OC development, spleen or bone marrow (BM) cells (2x106 cells/ml) or BM macrophages (BMM, 1x105 cells/ml) from C57BL/6 mice , as a source of OC precursors, were cultured with M-CSF (30 …

Medicine In The Margins: Access, Resistance And Health Care Utilization Among The Tuareg Of Niger, Teeb Al-Samarrai

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This thesis explores the historical, cultural and social reasons for the wariness that the nomadic Tuareg of Niger have towards Western medicine and medical practitioners. I give a historical account of their interactions with and resistance to the French colonial administration and the postcolonial state of Niger and how this resistance to Western medicine and health clinics was an embodied form of political and social resistance to governmentality and state attempts at sedentarization. I provide historical example of when health care delivery was successful and was embraced rather than resisted as well as the ways in which the Tuareg have …

Adherens Junction-Associated Protein Distribution Differs In Smooth Muscle Tissue And Acutely Isolated Cells, Thomas J. Eddinger, Jessen D. Schiebout, Darl R. Swartz Oct 2006

Adherens Junction-Associated Protein Distribution Differs In Smooth Muscle Tissue And Acutely Isolated Cells, Thomas J. Eddinger, Jessen D. Schiebout, Darl R. Swartz

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This study was designed to examine how smooth muscle (SM) cell (SMC) isolation affects the distribution of some adherens junction (AJ) complex-associated proteins. Immunofluorescence procedures for identifying protein distribution were used on gastrointestinal and tracheal SM tissues and freshly isolated SMCs from dogs and rabbits. As confirmed by force measurements, relaxation, Ca2+ depletion, and cholinergic activation of SM tissues do not cause significant redistribution of the AJ-associated proteins vinculin, talin, or fibronectin away from the plasma membrane. Unlike SMCs in tissue, freshly isolated SMCs show a variable peripheral/ cytoplasmic vinculin and talin distribution that is not altered by activation. …

Dictyostelium Myosin-Ie Is A Fast Molecular Motor Involved In Phagocytosis, Ulrike Durrwang, Setsuko Fujita-Becker, Muriel Erent, F. Jon Kull Oct 2006

Dictyostelium Myosin-Ie Is A Fast Molecular Motor Involved In Phagocytosis, Ulrike Durrwang, Setsuko Fujita-Becker, Muriel Erent, F. Jon Kull

Dartmouth Scholarship

Class I myosins are single-headed motor proteins, implicated in various motile processes including organelle translocation, ion-channel gating, and cytoskeleton reorganization. Here we describe the cellular localization of myosin-IE and its role in the phagocytic uptake of solid particles and cells. A complete analysis of the kinetic and motor properties of Dictyostelium discoideum myosin-IE was achieved by the use of motor domain constructs with artificial lever arms. Class I myosins belonging to subclass IC like myosin-IE are thought to be tuned for tension maintenance or stress sensing. In contrast to this prediction, our results show myosin-IE to be a fast motor. …

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Association for Himalayan Policy Research: Through various scholarly activities, NSC aims to create a global network of scholars, professionals, and policy practitioners interested in the policy and development of Nepal and the Himalayan region. Eventually, NSC plans to create an Association for Himalayan Policy Research. Journal publications and Himalayan-focused conference at Wisconsin University are important activities contributing to this collaboration, and our initial attempt to create this network has been very successful. Many scholars from the US, Europe, Far East, Australia, and Nepal are joining this network.

Investigation Of Pre-Clinical Damage Of Lens From Smoke Exposure In Nepalese Women, Amod Pokharel Oct 2006

Investigation Of Pre-Clinical Damage Of Lens From Smoke Exposure In Nepalese Women, Amod Pokharel

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

Prolonged exposure to biomass and tobacco smoke can damage the lens of human eyes. Epidemiological studies conducted in developed and developing countries have established an association between smoke and lens opacity (cataracts). In our earlier epidemiological study conducted in the eye hospital at western Terai region of Nepal, we had found rate of lens damage (cataracts) two times higher among women who cooked with solid fuel (wood, dung cake, crop-residues) in unvented stoves than women who cooked with clean burning fuel-stove (LPG, bio-gas, kerosene and electric heaters). Damaged lens (lens opacity) or cataract is still the most important cause of …

On The Implementation Of The Ramsar Convention In Nepal And Its Implications For Regional Waterfowl Conservation, Joel Heinen, Jay Sah Oct 2006

On The Implementation Of The Ramsar Convention In Nepal And Its Implications For Regional Waterfowl Conservation, Joel Heinen, Jay Sah

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

The 1971 Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially for Waterfowl Conservation (hereafter referred to as Ramsar) is historically and currently important from several standpoints. It came into force in 1975 and is the oldest of the international conservation conventions and the only one that protects one general ecosystem type. Through the main text and various policy documents published over the past 30 years, Ramsar provides signatory nations with many general and specific guidelines for conserving and managing wetlands resources and their associated wildlife. Here we consider the implementation of Ramsar within Nepal, a Party since 1987, based on the …

Analysis And Functional Annotation Of Expressed Sequence Tags From The Fall Armyworm Spodoptera Frugiperda, Youping Deng, Yinghua Dong, Venkata Thodima, Rollie J. Clem, A. Lorena Passareli

Faculty Publications

Background

Little is known about the genome sequences of lepidopteran insects, although this group of insects has been studied extensively in the fields of endocrinology, development, immunity, and pathogen-host interactions. In addition, cell lines derived from Spodoptera frugiperda and other lepidopteran insects are routinely used for baculovirus foreign gene expression. This study reports the results of an expressed sequence tag (EST) sequencing project in cells from the lepidopteran insect S. frugiperda, the fall armyworm.

Results

We have constructed an EST database using two cDNA libraries from the S. frugiperda-derived cell line, SF-21. The database consists of 2,367 ESTs …
