Removal Of The Cyanobacterial Toxin Microcystin -Lr By Biofiltration: Identification Of Toxin-Degrading Bacteria And Effects Of Backwashing, Lazaro Eleuterio Jan 2006

Removal Of The Cyanobacterial Toxin Microcystin -Lr By Biofiltration: Identification Of Toxin-Degrading Bacteria And Effects Of Backwashing, Lazaro Eleuterio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The removal of the cyanobacterial toxin microcystin-LR by slow and rapid drinking water biofilters, the presence of the microcystin-degrading bacteria in operating biofilters, the impact of backwashing on the removal of microcystin by biofiltration, and the prediction of microcystin-LR removal using a nonsteady-state biofilm model were investigated. A newly recognized microcystin-LR degrader, Morganella morganii, exists in Lake Mead and operating active biofilters. The results of the biodegradation tests indicated that addition of a carbon source, in the form of biodegradable NOM, significantly delayed the degradation of microcystin-LR. The biofiltration experiments demonstrated that at steady-state, biofiltration may be a potential technology …

A Philosophical Inquiry Into The Development Of The Notion Of Kalos Kagathos From Homer To Aristotle, Geoffrey Coad Jan 2006

A Philosophical Inquiry Into The Development Of The Notion Of Kalos Kagathos From Homer To Aristotle, Geoffrey Coad

Theses

In this thesis, I shall attempt to show that the Greeks believed in the ideal of a marriage between the beautiful and the good. This important philosophical ideal rests upon the premise that beauty depends upon function, behaviour and the intention of the agent. It is the anti-modernist position. This notion known to the ancient Greeks as kalos kagathos, which dates back to the times of Homer, seems to have been forgotten in our times. This study will trace the development of this ideal from Homer to Aristotle. This world view differs from the one we have come to understand …

Congressional Power And State Court Jurisdiction, Anthony J. Bellia Jr. Jan 2006

Congressional Power And State Court Jurisdiction, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.

Journal Articles

Federal laws that regulate state institutions give rise to what the Supreme Court has described as the oldest question of constitutional law. In recent years, the Court has confronted questions of congressional power to regulate state legislatures and executives, but has not directly confronted any question of congressional power to regulate state courts. Since the Founding, questions of congressional power to regulate state court jurisdiction of Article III cases have arisen - most notably, congressional power to assign jurisdiction of federal criminal cases to state courts. Today, significant questions of congressional power to regulate state court jurisdiction over non-Article III …

Calling Genocide By Its Rightful Name: Lemkin's Word, Darfur, And The Un Report, David Luban Jan 2006

Calling Genocide By Its Rightful Name: Lemkin's Word, Darfur, And The Un Report, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

When the United Nations commission investigating Darfur issued its report in January 2005, it concluded that the Darfur atrocities represented war crimes and crimes against humanity, but not genocide. This had the harmful effect of deflating efforts to mobilize political support to halt the Darfur atrocities. But the Commission's conclusion was based entirely on technicalities in the legal definitions of the international crimes, not on denial that extermination is going on in Darfur. In this paper, the author argues that the legal and popular meanings of genocide have diverged in harmful ways: where laymen understand that mass killings and rapes …

When Is Knowing Less Better Than Knowing More? Unpacking The Controversy Over Supreme Court Reference To Non-U.S. Law, Mark V. Tushnet Jan 2006

When Is Knowing Less Better Than Knowing More? Unpacking The Controversy Over Supreme Court Reference To Non-U.S. Law, Mark V. Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

My goal in this Essay is simply to lay out the criticisms of the use of non-U.S. law in constitutional interpretation, so as to identify what might be correct (not much, in the end) in those criticisms. I discuss criticisms based on theories of interpretation, on the claim that reference to non-U.S. law is merely decoration playing no role in generating outcomes, on the role the Constitution has in expressing distinctively American values, and on the proposition that judges are unlikely to do a good job in understanding - and therefore in referring to - non-U.S. law. This last "quality-control" …
