Assessing The Economic Development Of Nature Tourism, Nancy Hodur, F. Larry Leistritz, Kara Wolfe
Assessing The Economic Development Of Nature Tourism, Nancy Hodur, F. Larry Leistritz, Kara Wolfe
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Nature tourism is increasingly being considered as an economic development opportunity for rural areas of the Great Plains. As rural communities seek to develop nature tourism, questions regarding the attributes and interests of the nature tourist arise. This study sought to address these questions through a survey of participants at a birding festival held in central North Dakota in June 2004. The festival participants were predominately from outside the local area, and most of these visitors were from out of state. The festival participants were middle-aged and highly educated, and had relatively high income. The visitors spent an average of …

Review Of Butterflies Of Oklahoma, Kansas, And North Texas By John M. Dole, Walter B. Gerard, And John M. Nelson, Ronald Alan Royer
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This little book is a guide to 100 of the most common among approximately 255 butterfly species on record for the region it covers. Major taxonomic groupings are distinguished by color bars at the tops of pages. Colloquial nomenclature follows the North American Butterfly Association's Checklist and English Names of North American Butterflies (2001). Order of presentation and scientific names accord essentially with Opler and Warren, Scientific Names List for Butterfly Species of North America, North of Mexico (2002). Each species account presents up to four photographs of adults in nature, much in the style of the Butterflies through Binoculars …
Review Of The Swift Fox: Ecology And Conservation Of Swift Foxes In A Changing World Edited By Marsha A. Sovada And Ludwig Carbyn, Raymond Matlack
Review Of The Swift Fox: Ecology And Conservation Of Swift Foxes In A Changing World Edited By Marsha A. Sovada And Ludwig Carbyn, Raymond Matlack
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Swift foxes historically occurred throughout the short and mixed-grass prairies of the Great Plains. In February 1992, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) was petitioned by a private citizen to list the swift fox as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. The USFWS concluded that listing of the swift fox was warranted but precluded because of higher listing priorities. In 2002, the USFWS removed the swift fox from candidate status.
Review Of On The Great Plains: Agriculture And Environment By Geoff Cunfer, Gary Libecap
Review Of On The Great Plains: Agriculture And Environment By Geoff Cunfer, Gary Libecap
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Geoff Cunfer has written an important book about the interaction between humans and nature in the Great Plains between 1870 and the end of the twentieth century. It will be useful to those involved in environmental and ecological science, agriculture and agricultural history, as well as economic history and economic development. One of the largest agricultural landscapes in the U.S., the Great Plains was at one time thought of as "the Great American Desert," and the Northern Great Plains was the last region to be settled on the agricultural frontier. Interpretation of Great Plains history is split between two camps. …
Nebraska’S Tiger Beetle, Cincindela Nebraskana Casey, Mathew L. Brust, W. W. Hoback
Nebraska’S Tiger Beetle, Cincindela Nebraskana Casey, Mathew L. Brust, W. W. Hoback
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Named for the state where it was discovered, Cicindela Nebraskana Casey is among the rarest insects in Nebraska. Although this beetle was described in 1909, only nine specimens had been collected in Nebraska in the 95 years before we conducted surveys in 2003 and 2004 in the extreme western portion of the state. Because of scant records, little was known about the Nebraska populations relative to populations of the species in the remainder of the western United States. We discovered two populations in Sioux and Scotts Bluff counties. We review the taxonomy of this species and document its habitat and …
Review Of Revenge Of The Windigo: The Construction Of The Mind And Mental Health Of North American Aboriginal Peoples By James B. Waldram, Vicki Smye
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In Revenge of the Windigo, James Waldram provides an incisive critique of the use and abuse of culture in mental health theory and practice. In my view, one of the most important contributions of this book relates to Waldram's notice of the often unexamined and sometimes cavalier use of "Aboriginality" and related research methodological practices, including the uncritical appropriation of terminology in the field of Aboriginal mental health. I was particularly drawn to Waldram's attention to ideological positioning in which complex ideas are reduced to simplistic binary forms, for example, the use of the concepts of "traditional" and "holism," …

Review Of Growing Penstemons: Species, Cultivars, And Hybrids Compiled By Dale Lindgren And Ellen Wilde, Ronald Weedon
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This book clearly appeals to those of us who never met a penstemon we didn't like. Everything about it is oriented to making the experiences of the penstemon traveler easier and a lot more enjoyable, starting with the color photographs on the book covers.
Review Of Storied Stone: Indian Rock Art Of The Black Hills Country By Linea Sundstrom, Kevin Callahan
Review Of Storied Stone: Indian Rock Art Of The Black Hills Country By Linea Sundstrom, Kevin Callahan
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
As a "place of power" for several millennia, the Black Hills region contains a wealth of rock art, ranging from possibly Paleoindian and early Archaic examples to the carvings of members of the Custer expedition. In Storied Stone, Linea Sundstrom-a private consultant in archaeology, historic resource management, and ethnohistory with a wide range of interests and an impressive depth of knowledge of the Lakota, Cheyenne, Mandan, Hidatsa, Ponca, eastern Dakota, and other Native American cultures-has produced a major new work in which she effortlessly handles and interweaves the archaeological evidence, historical documents, and ethnographic accounts relevant to her subject …

Review Of Lewis And Clark And The Geology Of The Great Plains And Lewis And Clark And The Geology Of Nebraska And Parts Of Adjacent States By R. F. Diffendal, Jr., And Anne P. Diffendal, Harmon Maher, Jr.
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
When it comes to science in general, and the geology of the Great Plains in particular, there is arguably an imbalance between the wealth of material written for experts and the relative paucity written for the general public. These publications help correct that imbalance at a time when the various Lewis and Clark celebrations create an especially receptive and engaged audience.
Preliminary Assessment Of Sand Dune Stability Along A Bioclimatic Gradient, North Central And Northwestern Oklahoma, Carlos Cordova, Jess Porter, Kenneth Lepper, Regina Kalchgruber, Gregory Scott
Preliminary Assessment Of Sand Dune Stability Along A Bioclimatic Gradient, North Central And Northwestern Oklahoma, Carlos Cordova, Jess Porter, Kenneth Lepper, Regina Kalchgruber, Gregory Scott
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Sandhills of eolian origin and currently active dunes in Oklahoma are located mainly on the northern side of the main rivers. Their longitudinal distribution spans a gradient of annual precipitation ranging from 914 mm in the east to 403 mm in the west. Vegetation types along this gradient include cross-timbers woodlands in the east and sand-sage and short grasses in the west. The information presented here is a preliminary assessment of sand dune dynamics and morphology, soils, and vegetation as the basis for an ongoing study on past and present processes of sand dune stability. For this purpose, six areas …
Review Of Immigrants And The American Dream: Remaking The Middle Class By William A. V. Clark, John Defrain
Review Of Immigrants And The American Dream: Remaking The Middle Class By William A. V. Clark, John Defrain
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In three decades the immigrant population in the U.S. has increased from 10 million to more than 28 million and continues to grow. In 1970 the foreign-born population was little more than 4%; today it has reached 11 %. About 40% of the immigrant population growth in this 35-year period has occurred in the past decade alone. The consensus among demographers is that immigrants are the major contributor to the country's population growth.
Family Predictors Of Well-Functioning Midwestern Adolescents, Douglas A. Abbott, Scott Hall, William Meredith
Family Predictors Of Well-Functioning Midwestern Adolescents, Douglas A. Abbott, Scott Hall, William Meredith
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The purpose of our project was to investigate well-functioning adolescents to identify familial influences that may account for their positive developmental outcomes and healthy life choices. A family systems perspective was used to conceptualize this project. More than 300 teenagers were surveyed about family influences on adolescent outcomes. Results indicated that teen religiosity, parental warmth, parental monitoring, and a low occurrence of stressful life events were related to teen depression, participation in risky behaviors, and parental-teen conflict. General conclusions were drawn about the importance of the family environment on teen behavior and the usefulness of a systems point of view …
Review Of Deep In The Heart: The Texas Tendency In American Politics By James Mcenteer, Gary A. Keith
Review Of Deep In The Heart: The Texas Tendency In American Politics By James Mcenteer, Gary A. Keith
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
George W. Bush has spawned a cottage industry of publications about his success in politics. One of the latest entries is James McEnteer's Deep in the Heart: The Texas Tendency in American Politics. In the 1990s, McEnteer wrote Fighting Words about firebrand journalists who challenged and shook up the Texas Establishment. Now McEnteer has penned his own fighting words about Bush's America. Like others, McEnteer retraces the Bushes' shady business deals. But it is the Alamo, rather than Bush, that serves as McEnteer's touchstone. McEnteer argues that the myth of the Alamo reflects a deep-seated cultural Texanism that has …

Review Of Weeds Of The Great Plains By James Stubbendieck, Mitchell 1. Coffin, And L. M. Landholt, Craig C. Freeman
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Alteration of the Great Plains landscape during the past two centuries has permitted scores of weedy plants to flourish and expand their ranges, often profoundly affecting the ecology and economy of the region. As their numbers have increased, weed identification has become progressively more challenging. More than 600 of the 3,600 species of flowering plants and ferns documented in the Great Plains were not here 200 years ago. This book, updating and replacing Weeds of Nebraska and the Great Plains (1994), intends to enable users to "identify or confirm the identity of the most important weeds in the Great Plains."
Review Of Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas Edited By Dan L. Reinking, Keith Arnold
Review Of Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas Edited By Dan L. Reinking, Keith Arnold
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This volume culminates the typical five-year atlas study of breeding birds in a specific state, in this case one well within the Great Plains. Oklahoma abuts parts of five other states of that region and, as such, shares its avifauna with them. The obviously well-funded effort included a full-time seasonal employee each year to survey blocks and enter data, each one racking up an impressive 10,000 miles per season to reach blocks not covered by volunteers. Nonetheless, like most of those before it, this atlas project had to rely upon volunteers to accomplish much of the field work.
Strategies For Advocacy In Higher Education, Marie Byrd-Blake, Linda Hampton Wesson
Strategies For Advocacy In Higher Education, Marie Byrd-Blake, Linda Hampton Wesson
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The feminist phase theory (Tetreault, 1985) was used to examine the cultural patterns embedded in a department of a large, urban university, to classify how the faculty in the department perceived women, and to examine how our own behavior as two newly hired associate and assistant professors contributed or did not contribute to these patterns of behavior. Three years of field notes, anecdotal records, transcriptions of meetings, interviews, and student comments were categorized to develop experienced-derived strategies. These strategies encourage women in higher education to: (a) recognize their own enmeshment in patriarchal practices; (b) disrupt these practices through their own …
Review Of 5 Leadership Essentials For Women: Developing Your Ability To Make Things Happen Compiler Lisa Clark, Clarissa M. Craig
Review Of 5 Leadership Essentials For Women: Developing Your Ability To Make Things Happen Compiler Lisa Clark, Clarissa M. Craig
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Because much of the scholarship on leadership has been constructed using male norms (Nidiffer, 2001), there is added attraction when the essentials of successful leadership are targeted for women. 5 Leadership Essentials for Women: Developing Your Ability to Make Things Happen addresses five leadership skills that, according to the "compiler" [sic] Linda Clark, are designed with women's needs in mind. The leadership essentials explored are communication, relationship essentials, time management, group building, and conflict management.

For women who have been unrecognized for their work in education, being lost due to name changes, phone changes, and email changes does not seem to be very helpful to the cause of recognizing the work of the 51 %. We have had enough invisibility and enough flying around like ivory-billed woodpeckers.

There are some fundamental principles that relate to writing. For instance, you must sit down and begin. Writing is an illusive task. Procrastination and hesitation are poor companions to the work of the writer.

African American Female College And University Presidents: Career Path To The Presidency, Sandra Jackson, Sandra Harris
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The purpose of this study was to investigate the career paths and educational preparation of African American female college presidents. Forty-three of the 59 college presidents responded to a Likert-type survey. Findings indicated that African American female college presidents were more likely to hold a doctorate in education and came to the presidency from a variety of positions, often from other institutions or outside of education.

Women In History--Dr. Susan Laflesche Picotte: American Physician And Heroine, Bernita L. Krumm
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Susan LaFlesche Picotte walked in two cultures and, by any measure, served as a model for both. She overcame incredible obstacles to become the first Native American woman doctor in the United States. Most estimates agree that in 25 years she treated every member of the Omaha tribe. She dedicated her life to the service of others; she is without a doubt the true American heroine. References

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This paper stems from research that examined the impact of the rural context upon the career patterns of women educational administrators in rural public school districts in the state of Texas. The study examined two pertinent issues for women in rural education: (a) the nature of rural communities and its relationship to female career paths in educational administration, and (b) barriers and supports faced by female administrators in the rural context. The purpose of this paper will be to outline the findings of the study in relation to the emergent issues for rural female administrators.
Women In Educational Leadership Finding Common Ground, Kathleen Murphey, Glenda Moss, Susan Hannah, Roberta Wiener
Women In Educational Leadership Finding Common Ground, Kathleen Murphey, Glenda Moss, Susan Hannah, Roberta Wiener
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The purpose of this research project was to engage in self-reflective analysis of leadership development as an ongoing process of social action towards democratizing education. Four White women connected by their work as educational leaders, teachers and administrators, engaged this topic by conducting a dialogical analysis of their experiences in leadership. They dialogued from what were technically different positions in the hierarchy at their University and implemented a research process to speak across or marginalize those technical differences to produce a text that explored the rich terrain of leading in which they shared experiences of growth, the conceptual frameworks that …

Incitement In The Mosques: Testing The Limits Of Free Speech And Religious Liberty, Kenneth Lasson
All Faculty Scholarship
In times of terror and tension, civil liberties are at their greatest peril. Nowadays, no individual rights are more in jeopardy than the freedoms of speech and religion. This is true particularly for followers of Islam, whose leaders have become increasingly radical in both their preaching and practice. "Kill the Jews!" and "Kill the Americans!" are chants heard regularly in many Middle Eastern mosques, as frightful echoes of the fatwa are issued by today's quintessential terrorist, Osama bin Laden. The incitement continues unabated to this day. In April of 2004, for example, a Muslim preacher at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in …

The United States Supreme Court's 1995 decision in Tome v. United States has read Federal Rule of Evidence 801(d)(1)(B) to prevent the prosecution's offering a child abuse victim's prior consistent statements as substantive evidence. As a result of that decision, the statements will also be inadmissible even for the limited purpose of helping to evaluate the credibility of a child, if there is a serious risk that the out-of-court statements would be used on the issue of guilt or innocence.
Moreover, after the Court's March 2004 decision in Crawford v. Washington, which redesigned the landscape of Confrontation Clause analysis, other …

Tools For Analysis Of Complex Geometries For A Combined Cycle Scram Jet / Rocket, James Moss
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
A preliminary design for a variable geometry combined cycle supersonic combustion ram jet (SCRAM jet) / rocket was developed. A precise geometry was selected by parametric analysis and the resultant geometry was analyzed using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code developed by Dr. Eric Perrell, and modified by, among others, the author.
This paper is broken into several sections discussing, separately, the design innovations used to permit the geometry of the craft to be adjusted to conform to its flight conditions, the 2D analysis tool developed for the parametric analysis, development of the grid for CFD analysis, and modifications made …
