Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment

Bullet point summary of the Moab Project and the White Mesa Mill Alternative. The context of this summary is that in 2001, the Moab site, in Grand County, Utah, fell under the control of the Department of Energy. A plan was then formed to relocate the uranium mill tailings pile on the Moab site to the White Mesa Mill (located approximately six miles south of Blanding, Utah), a fully licensed and active uranium mill site.

This research was completed money allocated during Round 5 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University was named conservator …

Improved Patient Notes From Medical Students During Web-Based Teaching Using Faculty-Calibrated Peer Review And Self-Assessment, Teresita Mccarty, Marie Parkes, Teresa Anderson, Jan Mines, Betty Skipper, James Grebosky

UME Faculty and Staff Educational Scholarship

Background: This study examines the effectiveness of Calibrated Peer Review (TM) (CPR), a Web-based writing development program, to teach and assess medical students' patient note-writing skills in a standardized fashion. Method: At the end of the clerkship year, 67 medical students were divided inot three groups, introduced to CPR, and instructed in patient note-writing. Students then wrote notes for three clinical cases, presented in different order to each group. After training on faculty-calibrated standards, students evaluated their peers; notes and tehir own notes. Trained faculty, blinded to author, order, and group, also graded student notes. Results: Faculty gave lower scores …

Great Anger, Anthony Cunningham Oct 2005

Great Anger, Anthony Cunningham

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Anger has had a major hand in a history of inhumanity. In this light, some schools of thought have suggested that we do best to jettison anger entirely. However, anger, like grief, is tied to caring deeply, and as such, both emotions can speak to what is best and most beautiful about human life and character.

Leaving No Loopholes For Terrorist Financing: The Implementation Of The Usa Patriot Act In The Real Estate Field, Elizabeth A. Cheney Oct 2005

Leaving No Loopholes For Terrorist Financing: The Implementation Of The Usa Patriot Act In The Real Estate Field, Elizabeth A. Cheney

Vanderbilt Law Review

September 11, 2001 began like any other day but took a drastic turn at 8:45 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time when a plane, hijacked by terrorists, crashed into the northern tower of the World Trade Center, setting it afire. As Americans mourned in silence, a second plane rammed through the southern tower of the World Trade Center at 9:05 a.m. and set it aflame. The horror continued, as a third plane crashed into the Pentagon, a fourth diverted into a field in Pennsylvania, and both towers of the World Trade Center collapsed.

It did not take long for Americans to realize …

People Living With, Not Dying From Disease: Patient Empowerment Through Anti-Retroviral Therapy And Possibilities For Social Change, Xin Wei Ngiam Oct 2005

People Living With, Not Dying From Disease: Patient Empowerment Through Anti-Retroviral Therapy And Possibilities For Social Change, Xin Wei Ngiam

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In South Africa today, it is estimated that there are 6.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS, at least half a million of whom require urgent treatment. On the continent of Africa as a whole the numbers are even more startling. Unfortunately, although the South African government has now committed itself to rolling out anti-retroviral therapy through the public healthcare system, progress has been slower than expected. Yet in numerous sites around South Africa, rollout centres have been established successfully, even in the most rural parts of the country. These programmes rely on existing community initiatives, community health workers and volunteers, …

Facilitating Public Participation In The Eastern Cape Province: A Case Study Of The Centre For Governance In Africa, Paul D. Lemaistre Oct 2005

Facilitating Public Participation In The Eastern Cape Province: A Case Study Of The Centre For Governance In Africa, Paul D. Lemaistre

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Decreasing amounts of public participation threaten to undermine the legitimacy of democracy in South Africa. Numerous surveys, academic resources and Internet and print media indicate general trends among the citizenry that a disconnection and dissatisfaction towards government is prevalent. As a result, the South African public has extremely low levels of public participation for a nation with such a politically charged past. It has become the objective of many civil society organizations to help with the delivery of vital developmental goals, including democracy advocacy, on behalf of the citizens. This paper seeks to examine the efforts of a single NGO, …

Obstruction And Transcendence: Trespassing On The Border, Adam Sheraden Oct 2005

Obstruction And Transcendence: Trespassing On The Border, Adam Sheraden

Architecture Senior Theses

"The border is an element of both spatial obstruction and cultural transcendence. I propose that there should be a physical manifestation of this cultural transcendence as there is a border fence to register the material obstruction that the border fence produces. The border, as a political and spatial construction, allows for the formation of separate cultural distinctions and therefore is as much a defining element in the city as other social institutions. The border is the final punctuation mark on this arid landscape."

An Oasis In Byron Shire: Factors In The Progress And Success Of A Local Greens Party, Adam N. Smith Oct 2005

An Oasis In Byron Shire: Factors In The Progress And Success Of A Local Greens Party, Adam N. Smith

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Greens in Byron Shire on the North Coast of New South Wales gained four of ten seats on the Shire Council including the mayoral position in 2004, giving them a strong voice in the direction of the Shire. This degree of local success is incredibly rare for the Australian Greens or for any third party, and thus, the example of the Byron Greens is a significant case for anyone involved with local politics in Byron or anyone who is involved with third parties, specifically with the Greens. This study sets out to determine the factors in the success of …

Q.954 And A.954, Quickie Problem And Solution, Arthur T. Benjamin, Michel Bataille

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Problem and proof proposed by authors.

Another proof, using lattice paths, can be found in Robert A. Sulanke's article, Objects Counted by the Central Delannoy Numbers, The Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol 6, 2003. A proof by polynomials is in Michel Bataille's paper Some Identities about an Old Combinatorial Sum, The Mathematical Gazette, March 2003, pp. 144-8. A slight change in the above proof leads to m ≥ n, a generalization proved by Li Zhou using lattice paths in The Mathematical Gazette.

Combatant Status Review Tribunals And The Unique Nature Of The War On Terror, Robert A. Peal Oct 2005

Combatant Status Review Tribunals And The Unique Nature Of The War On Terror, Robert A. Peal

Vanderbilt Law Review

On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the United States, killing 2,973 innocent civilians. This was the largest loss of life on U.S. soil due to a hostile act in the nation's history. Al Qaeda, an international terrorist organization, claimed responsibility for the act. Al Qaeda had been systematically targeting U.S. civilians and service members for at least the previous nine years. In response to the attacks, the United States conducted a series of military and legal actions that were highly controversial and unprecedented. As part of these actions, the executive branch claimed the authority to detain indefinitely individuals it labeled …

Making Value Visible: Excellence In Campus-Community Partnerships In The Arts, Humanities, And Design, Cynthia Koch Oct 2005

Making Value Visible: Excellence In Campus-Community Partnerships In The Arts, Humanities, And Design, Cynthia Koch

Imagining America

This study sets forth what practitioners themselves believe to be the characteristics of excellence in campus-community partnerships in the arts, humanities, and design. It presents the fruits of a research project of modest scale. But in so doing it reveals something large: a flourishing world of work populated by faculty artists and scholars; staff members of nonprofit organizations and public cultural institutions; and creative citizens working through robust networks. Attentive to the texture and tones of practioners' voices, the report responds to people who are clearly hungry to address questions about excellence.

Making Value Visible opens a window on the …

Plant Organellar Protein Targeting: A Traffic Plan Still Under Construction, Sally Ann Mackenzie Oct 2005

Plant Organellar Protein Targeting: A Traffic Plan Still Under Construction, Sally Ann Mackenzie

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

It has long been understood that specific features of a protein and its corresponding import apparatus dictate the behavior of mitochondrial proteins in their intracellular targeting behavior. In plants, the process by which proteins are directed to organelles has been influenced uniquely by the introduction to the cell of plastids. Parallel functions carried out within the mitochondrion and plastid permit the sharing of proteins and emergence of mechanisms to facilitate dual-targeting of the nuclear-encoded products to both compartments. These include transcriptional and translational variations, relaxation of translation initiation controls and conditional cellular influences. Details of the dual targeting system are …

Successful Cropping In The High Rainfall Zone Of Western Australia : Crop Research And Extension In The Zone, Narelle Hill, Heping Zhang Dr., Tim Trezise, John Young, Natahan Moyes, Laurence Carslake, Neil C. Turner Dr, Walter Anderson, Michael Poole

Bulletins 4000 -

This manual is a review of all the relevant and current information relating to cropping systems in the high rainfall cropping zone (HRZ) of Western Australia. It functions partly as the final report summarising research results and extension activities and discusses recommendations and potential outcomes of two 5-year GRDC-funded projects (DAW 673 and CSP 302), that aimed to increase the productivity of southern high rainfall cropping systems.
