Spin-Photovoltaic Effect In Quantum Wires Due To Intersubband Transitions, Arkady Fedorov, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Carlo Piermarocchi

We consider the current induced in a quantum wire by external electromagnetic radiation. The photocurrent is caused by the interplay of spin-orbit interaction (Rashba and Dresselhaus terms) and an external in-plane magnetic field. We calculate this current using a Wigner functions approach, taking into account radiation-induced transitions between transverse subbands. The magnitude and the direction of the current depends on the Dresselhaus and Rashba constants, strength of magnetic field, radiation frequency, and intensity. The current can be controlled by changing some of these parameters.

We report on the observation of room-temperature ferromagnetism in epitaxial (Zn,Mn)O films grown by a pulsed-laser deposition technique using high-density targets. The X-ray, microscopic, spectroscopic and magnetic properties of target material containing 6 at.% of Mn and films were compared. The target shows the presence of large clusters exhibiting paramagnetic behavior. However, ferromagnetic properties were observed in (Zn,Mn)O films grown at a substrate temperature of 500 °C and with an oxygen partial pressure of 1 mTorr. Although, crystalline quality of the film improves with increasing substrate temperature, the ferromagnetism becomes weaker.

In this paper, the relationship between reliability and engineering system construction cost for obtaining optimum reliability was studied. This proposed approach was applied to the repair alternatives of existing reinforced concrete (RC) bridges for acquiring the result of optimization analysis. According to the D(degree) E(extent) R (relevancy) evaluation method, which is widely used by civil engineers in Taiwan the existing RC bridges with and without stridden rivers can be divided into 21 and 17 substructures, respectively. This paper traces laissez-faire back to its French roots, and in particular, to its origins as a political philosophy evoking an economic approach. Related to his visit to France in the 1760s and his personal contacts, we suggest that Adam Smith serves as the link between selected French thinkers and what after Smith’s Inquiry would be widely accepted as a quintessentially Anglo-Saxon tradition in economics. Exploring doctrine, we offer linkages between F. Quesnay, A. Turgot, J.J. Rousseau, and Smith’s ideas. Development of a rapid method for the detection of fecal enterococci and pathogenic microorganisms in beach water was attempted utilizing an evanescent wave fiber optic biosensor. Various assay formats including a sandwich immunoassay were tested in the development of a rapid assay. Fluorophore labeled antibodies were used for specific detection of bacteria captured or adsorbed directly to the surface of a polystyrene fiber optic waveguide. Binding of the fluorescent labeled antibody to its specific target or binding of a fluorescent labeled anti-IgG within 100-1000 nm of the waveguide surface caused excitation of the fluorescent conjugate resulting in a quantifiable signal. …

We characterize joint k-hyponormality for 2-variable weighted shifts. Using this characterization we construct a family of examples which establishes and illustrates the gap between k-hyponormality and (k+1) -hyponormality for each k ≥ 1. As a consequence, we obtain an abstract solution to the Lifting Problem for Commuting Subnormals.

International Studies Masters

With this paper I intend to investigate the possibility of creating a new Yugoslavia considering its historical background and national complexity. One point of view maintains that nationalism is insurmountable obstacle for the future union of South Slavs. In contrast, a historical perspective shows that South Slavs reaction to external forces had led to more or less successful unifications in the past and this creates the possibility of another union in the future.

Currently, charter schools represent one of the fastest growing movements of educational reform. The first charter school opened in 1992 and there are now over 3,400 charter schools nationwide. Despite this growth, we are only beginning to learn about the performance and operation of these schools.
