Physics

We present results for two-particle transverse momentum correlations, ⟨Δpt,iΔpt,j⟩, as a function of event centrality for Au+Au collisions at √sNN=20, 62, 130, and 200 GeV at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We observe correlations decreasing with centrality that are similar at all four incident energies. The correlations multiplied by the multiplicity density increase with incident energy, and the centrality dependence may show evidence of processes such as thermalization, jet production, or the saturation of transverse flow. The square root of the correlations divided by the event-wise average transverse momentum per event shows little …

Mapping Tampa Bay Cynoscion Nebulosus Spawning Habitat Using Passive Acoustic Surveys, Sarah Lyle Walters Oct 2005

Mapping Tampa Bay Cynoscion Nebulosus Spawning Habitat Using Passive Acoustic Surveys, Sarah Lyle Walters

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, spawning locations as well as associated environmental variables were determined for Tampa Bay, Florida during the 2004 spawning season using a mobile hydrophone survey. Hydrophones, a type of underwater microphone, can be used to detect and record spawning sounds of soniferous fishes. During their spawning season in Tampa Bay which generally occurs between March and September, mature male spotted seatrout generate sounds associated with courtship in the crepuscular and evening periods by vibrating sonic muscles against the swim bladder. Active spawning sites can be located using hydrophones to find these calling males.

Torsion-Induced Pressure Distribution Changes In Human Intervertebral Discs: An In Vitro Study, Brenda Kay Yantzer Oct 2005

Torsion-Induced Pressure Distribution Changes In Human Intervertebral Discs: An In Vitro Study, Brenda Kay Yantzer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Introduction. To test the effects of torsion torques on intradiscal pressure and disc height in human lumbar specimens.

Methods. Six human lumbar cadaveric functional spine units (FSU) were loaded in the neutral position with 600 N compression. Nucleus pressure measurements were obtained at 0 Nm, 0.5 Nm, 1.0 Nm and 2 Nm torsion torque. Posterior elements were removed and pressure measurements were repeated at the same torsion torques for the disc body unit (DBU). The pressure in the nucleus was measured by pulling a pressure probe through the disc along a straight path in the midsagittal plane.

Structural Control Of Vertically Aligned Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes By Radio-Frequency Plasmas, Jitendra Menda, Benjamin Ulmen, Lakshman Kumar Vanga, Vijaya Kayastha, Yoke Khin Yap, Zhengwei Pan, Ilia Ivanov, Alex Puretzky, David Geohegan Oct 2005

Structural Control Of Vertically Aligned Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes By Radio-Frequency Plasmas, Jitendra Menda, Benjamin Ulmen, Lakshman Kumar Vanga, Vijaya Kayastha, Yoke Khin Yap, Zhengwei Pan, Ilia Ivanov, Alex Puretzky, David Geohegan

Department of Physics Publications

Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition is the only technique for growing individual vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (VA-MWCNTs) at desired locations. Inferior graphitic order has been a long-standing issue that has prevented realistic applications of these VA-MWCNTs. Previously, these VA-MWCNTs were grown by a one-plasma approach. Here, we demonstrate the capability of controlling graphitic order and diameters of VA-MWCNTs by decoupling the functions of the conventional single plasma into a dual-plasma configuration. Our results indicate that the ionic flux and kinetic energy of the growth species are important for improving graphitic order of VA-MWCMTs.

A ~7.5 M⊕ Planet Orbiting The Nearby Star, Gj 876*, Eugenio Rivera, Jack J. Lissauer, R. Paul Butler, Geoffrey W. Marcy, Steve Vogt, Debra A. Fischer, Timothy M. Brown, Gregory Laughlin, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

High-precision, high-cadence radial velocity monitoring over the past 8 yr at the W. M. Keck Observatory reveals evidence for a third planet orbiting the nearby (4.69 pc) dM4 star GJ 876. The residuals of three-body Newtonian fits, which include GJ 876 and Jupiter-mass companions b and c, show significant power at a periodicity of 1.9379 days. Self-consistently fitting the radial velocity data with a model that includes an additional body with this period significantly improves the quality of the fit. These four-body (three-planet) Newtonian fits find that the minimum mass of companion "d" is m sin i = 5.89 ± …
