Roadmap For High Efficiency Solid-State Neutron Detectors, R. J. Nikolic, Chin Li Cheung, C. E. Reinhardt, T. F. Wang Oct 2005

Roadmap For High Efficiency Solid-State Neutron Detectors, R. J. Nikolic, Chin Li Cheung, C. E. Reinhardt, T. F. Wang

Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications

Solid-state thermal neutron detectors are generally fabricated in a planar configuration by coating a layer of neutron-to-alpha converter material onto a semiconductor. The as-created alpha particles in the material are expected to impinge the semiconductor and create electron-hole pairs which provide the electrical signal. These devices are limited in efficiency to a range near (2-5%)/cm2 due to the conflicting thickness requirements of the converter layer. In this case, the layer is required to be thick enough to capture the incoming neutron flux while at the same time adequately thin to allow the alpha particles to reach the semiconductor. A …

Genetic Analysis Of The Sars-Coronavirus Spike Glycoprotein Functional Domains Involved In Cell-Surface Expression And Cell-To-Cell Fusion, Chad M. Petit, Jeffrey M. Melancon, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Robin Colgrove, Michael Farzan, David M. Knipe, K. G. Kousoulas Oct 2005

Genetic Analysis Of The Sars-Coronavirus Spike Glycoprotein Functional Domains Involved In Cell-Surface Expression And Cell-To-Cell Fusion, Chad M. Petit, Jeffrey M. Melancon, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Robin Colgrove, Michael Farzan, David M. Knipe, K. G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

The SARS-coronavirus (SARS-CoV) is the etiological agent of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The SARS-CoV spike (S) glycoprotein mediates membrane fusion events during virus entry and virus-induced cell-to-cell fusion. To delineate functional domains of the SARS-CoV S glycoprotein, single point mutations, cluster-to-lysine and cluster-to-alanine mutations, as well as carboxyl-terminal truncations were investigated in transient expression experiments. Mutagenesis of either the coiled-coil domain of the S glycoprotein amino terminal heptad repeat, the predicted fusion peptide, or an adjacent but distinct region, severely compromised S-mediated cell-to-cell fusion, while intracellular transport and cell-surface expression were not adversely affected. Surprisingly, a carboxyl-terminal truncation of …

The Changing Demographic, Legal, And Technological Contexts Of Political Representation, Benjamin Forest Oct 2005

The Changing Demographic, Legal, And Technological Contexts Of Political Representation, Benjamin Forest

Dartmouth Scholarship

Three developments have created challenges for political representation in the U.S. and particularly for the use of territorially based representation (election by district). First, the demographic complexity of the U.S. population has grown both in absolute terms and in terms of residential patterns. Second, legal developments since the 1960s have recognized an increasing number of groups as eligible for voting rights protection. Third, the growing technical capacities of computer technology, particularly Geographic Information Systems, have allowed political parties and other organizations to create election districts with increasingly precise political and demographic characteristics. Scholars have made considerable progress in measuring and …

Controls On The Seasonal Exchange Of Ch3br In Temperate Peatlands, Marguerite L. White, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill, Cindy H. Mosedale

Faculty Publications

Measurements of CH3Br exchange at two New Hampshire peatlands (Sallie's Fen and Angie's Bog) indicate that net flux from these ecosystems is the sum of competing production and consumption processes. Net CH3Br fluxes were highly variable and ranged from net emission to net uptake between locations within a single peatland. At Sallie's Fen, net CH3Br flux exhibited positive correlations with peat temperature and air temperature during all seasons sampled, but these relationships were not observed at Angie's Bog where flux varied according to microtopography. The major CH3Br production process at Sallie's Fen appeared dependent on aerobic conditions within the peat, …

Milk, Fashion, And The Love Boat, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It's difficult to know where to begin in this late October silly season that has produced some of the wackiest and best examples of self-righteousness by the people who claim to be 'leading' the major sports. Once again they have come forward to 'protect' our children from all sorts of evil forces loose in society.

Buggy Whips And Broadcast Flags: The Need For A New Politics Of Expression, Garrett Levin Oct 2005

Buggy Whips And Broadcast Flags: The Need For A New Politics Of Expression, Garrett Levin

Duke Law & Technology Review

In response to growing fears from the entertainment industry over online file-sharing of valuable content, the Federal Communications Commission ("FCC") enacted sweeping regulations over the production of electronic devices in the name of protecting digital television broadcasts. Although the FCC's "broadcast flag" regulation was struck down on jurisdictional grounds, Hollywood has not given up the push for strict control. If Hollywood successfully acquires broadcast flag protection there could be far-reaching implications for innovation and development of new digital technologies. While content providers have important reasons to protect copyrighted material, there is too much at stake to merely acquiesce to their …

Ready Or Not? Perceptions Of Marriage Readiness Among Emerging Adults, Sarah Badger Oct 2005

Ready Or Not? Perceptions Of Marriage Readiness Among Emerging Adults, Sarah Badger

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to better understand the current culture of marriage preparation among emerging adults and the primary factors that influence their attitudes about marriage and family life. A total of 254 students from five universities in the United States completed questionnaires on criteria for marriage readiness and criteria for adulthood. The results indicate that we are witnessing the formation of a unique culture of marriage preparation in the rising generation of educated young adults in comparison to the one experienced by their parents and grandparents. This study supports the notion that marriage still matters for the …
