Selenocysteine (Sec) is inserted into selenoproteins co-translationally with the help of various cis- and trans-acting factors. The specific mechanisms of Sec biosynthesis and insertion into protein in eukaryotic cells, however, are not known. Two proteins, SECp43 and the soluble liver antigen (SLA), were previously reported to interact with tRNA ^[Ser]Sec, but their functions remained elusive. Herein, we report that knockdown of SECp43 in NIH3T3 or TCMK-1 cells using RNA interference technology resulted in a reduction in the level of methylation at the 2’-hydroxylribosyl moiety in the wobble position (Um34) of Sec tRNA ^[Ser]Sec, and consequently reduced glutathione peroxidase …

The purpose of this study is to analyze the styles of communication used by high-level leaders. This study used prior written works and one-on-one audiotaped interviews conducted with a Chief Executive Officer, a Chief Financial Officer, and an Executive Vice President of a local Fortune 500 company to determine patterns in communication practices. This dissertation is an investigation of the psychometric properties of the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) (Paloutzian & Ellison) using a sample of African American women recruited from the community. The purpose was to determine the appropriateness of using the SWBS with a sample not included in the earlier norming studies (Ledbetter et al., 1991). The sample consisted of 168 African American women who were parents or guardians of youth attending middle school in a Midwestern urban area. Substantial comparative analyses of Puritanism and Mormonism are lacking in historical scholarship, despite noted similarities between the two religions. This study helps to fill that void by comparing the Puritan and Mormon proselytization efforts among the Indians that occurred at the respective sites of Massachusetts Bay Colony and the Southern Indian Mission. In my examination of the missionization attempts that took place at these two locations, I analyze a common motive and method of the two denominations for attempting to Christianize the Indians. Community policing differs from traditional police work. It is a response to public and social pressures on policing to fill needed roles of prevention, as opposed to crime fighting. Literature stresses that community policing efforts incorporate the attitudes and perceptions of law enforcement officers, suggesting that certain learned and naturally-occurring personality traits among officers predispose success or failure in community policing efforts. To further the exploration of community policing, there is a need to qualify the personal and professional attributes of police officers and their impact on order maintenance and exercised degrees of control.

We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed, and an upper limit of 0.60×10-2 is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

This project investigates the use of a dehumidifying dry kiln (traditionally used for drying lumber) for drying wild herbal teas in Southeast Alaska. Its major considerations are kiln design, moisture content data (for use in drying schedules), and preliminary drying schedules. Project conclusions result from literature review and experimentation. Regarding kiln design for uniformity and efficiency, the researcher found the following principles of utmost importance: 1) proper direction of airflow (achieved by incorporating measures that will direct the airflow, such as baffling and air deflectors); 2) maximizing space by fitting the maximum number of drying racks into the kiln and …

The fight to curb the ever-increasing amount of unsolicited commercial email or “spam” showing up in the inboxes of American businesses has generated both state and federal legislation. The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 was enacted to create a bright-line between spam and legal commercial email. The Act preempted many state spam laws but also left significant enforcement abilities to the individual states. States that elect to create large civil damages for spam without criminalizing the transmission of unsolicited commercial email run the risk of winning cases where the damage awards are largely unenforceable and not effective deterrents to big-time spammers. …

Radio Frequency Identification (“RFID”) is a wireless tracking technology. Goods fitted with radio tags can communicate with computers via radio waves, revolutionizing methods to locate and catalogue goods at every stage of the supply line. Current research predicts that 40% of all inventory intensive businesses will have such wireless tracking systems by the end of 2005. This article examines current legal trends that impact business use of RFID including contractual considerations to properly allocate risks attendant with implementation of RFID, FCC regulation of RFID, and consumer privacy concerns.

Wait! Don't Fire That Blogger! What Limits Does Labor Law Impose On Employer Regulation Of Employee Blogs?, Carson Strege-Flora

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recently issued a decision protecting the right of an employee to post critical comments about his employer on a website. The court found that the employer’s discipline was an unfair labor practice prohibited by federal labor law because it was “concerted activity” protected by the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). Employers wishing to discipline employees for their public blogging activity should be familiar with the protections provided by the NLRA. This Article explores the consequences for violating the Act and addresses what employers should consider when attempting to limit employee blogging.

Electronic Case Filing: Is Failure To Check Email Related To An Electronically Filed Case Malpractice?, Jessica Bekskis

This article explores electronic case filing and the duties of lawyers with regard to electronic filing. A recent federal district court case held that an attorney’s failure affirmatively to check the status of his case via email or the court’s PACER system, which resulted in dismissal of the case, did not constitute excusable neglect under Rule 60(b)(1) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. This holding imputes a professional duty on lawyers who use the electronic filing system to check email and the status of their case, suggesting that breaching of such duty may constitute malpractice.

Trademark owners in America and Europe are attacking the lucrative practice of selling search results and advertising linked to searches based on product names and trademarks, which is known as trademark keying. From makers of luxury products to travel companies, and insurance companies to home décor vendors, companies have sued Internet search providers to stop this practice that they believe amounts to trademark infringement.
