The Online Language Learning Environment: New Roles For The Humanist, James S. Noblitt Jan 2005

The Online Language Learning Environment: New Roles For The Humanist, James S. Noblitt

Russian Language Journal

Thomas Edison played an important role in improving the technologies needed for the telephone. He was said to have been excited about the educational potential of the new instrument and speculated that it would soon be found in every classroom.

Well, he was right about the educational potential of information and communication technology, but he was wrong about the form the new technology would take.

This chapter raises questions concerning the role humanists will play in determining the development and implementation of information and communication technologies for educational purposes.

Perspectives On Curriculum Construction At The Postsecondary Level: Contexts, Approaches, Principles, Heidi Byrnes Jan 2005

Perspectives On Curriculum Construction At The Postsecondary Level: Contexts, Approaches, Principles, Heidi Byrnes

Russian Language Journal

A curriculum is an attempt, wrote Stenhouse three decades ago (1975, 4), to communicate the essential principles and features of an educational proposal in such a form that it is open to critical scrutiny and capable of effective translation into practice.

If one applies that notion of curriculum to the foreign language field in general, and to second- or foreign-language learning in U.S. colleges and universities in particular, one is immediately confronted with a dilemma: how can we speak of a foreign-language curriculum at the college level when a principled approach that is open to scrutiny and that builds on …

Bank Insolvency Regimes In The United States And The United Kingdom, Heidi Mandanis Schooner Jan 2005

Bank Insolvency Regimes In The United States And The United Kingdom, Heidi Mandanis Schooner

Scholarly Articles

Bank insolvency regimes vary widely. First, many countries maintain separate bank insolvency rules from those that govern insolvency of other firms or individuals. Other countries have no special regime and rely on their general insolvency law for bank closure. Second, some countries rely on an administrative process for bank closure in which the bank supervisor, bank insurer, or other agency has the power to appoint the conservator or receiver, and, in some instances, may appoint itself to the job. Other countries rely on a judicial process in which the bank supervisor (or bank managers or creditors) must apply to the …

Legal Frameworks For Economic Transition In Iraq – Occupation Under The Law Of War Vs. Global Governance Under The Law Of Peace, Antonio F. Perez Jan 2005

Legal Frameworks For Economic Transition In Iraq – Occupation Under The Law Of War Vs. Global Governance Under The Law Of Peace, Antonio F. Perez

Scholarly Articles

After over a decade as the ruling conventional wisdom under the rubric of the so-called Washington Consensus, the prospect of reconstruction and development through fiscal austerity, privatization and liberalization of markets is under considerable attack today from many quarters. One common theme of these challenges-to what has been received wisdom-focuses not on the technical characteristics of development, but rather its connection to political development.

Re-Validating The Doctrine Of Anticipatory Nuisance, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2005

Re-Validating The Doctrine Of Anticipatory Nuisance, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

The law of nuisance has long been seen as the heart of real property law - this because of its distributive and re-distributive force in land use. In its present form, while often ad hoc in application, a nuisance is defined generally as merely some interference with the use and enjoyment of the land. The most common remedy to abate a nuisance is injunctive relief in equity. Yet, judicial creativity has been seen through the use of such remedies as awards of permanent damages and the compensated injunction. The doctrine of anticipatory nuisance is brought into focus usually when a …

Human Rights And Bioethics: Formulating A Universal Right To Health, Health Care, Or Health Protection?, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Codifying, and then implementing, an international right to health, health care, or protection is beset with serious roadblocks - foremost among them being contentious issues of indeterminacy, justiciability, and progressive realization. Although advanced - and to some degree recognized under the rubric of a social or cultural entitlement within the law of human rights and, more particularly, the U.S. Declaration on Human Rights, together with International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, and presently UNESCO's Draft Declaration on Universal Norms on Bioethics - attainment …

Servant-Leadership In A Changing Culture: Reflections On The Brazilian Context, Robson Moura Marinho Jan 2005

Servant-Leadership In A Changing Culture: Reflections On The Brazilian Context, Robson Moura Marinho

Faculty Publications

As in any other society, the principles of servant-leadership have an incontestable appeal to Brazilian corporate environment, but the term servant may not sound terribly attractive to people from the Brazilian culture. In fact, this is one of the struggles we face when spreading the servant-leadership philosophy among business corporations and Brazilian society at large. Recently, in a class on Leadership Teamwork for Masters students at University of Santo Amaro, in Sao Paulo, I strategically decided to explore the servant-leadership concept as the foundation of the course, so I outlined the topic on the course syllabus. As I introduced the …

Distorted Wave Born And Three-Body Distorted Wave Born Approximation Calculations Of The Fully Differential Cross Section For Electron-Impact Ionization Of Nitrogen Molecules, Junfang Gao, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher Jan 2005

Distorted Wave Born And Three-Body Distorted Wave Born Approximation Calculations Of The Fully Differential Cross Section For Electron-Impact Ionization Of Nitrogen Molecules, Junfang Gao, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Currently there are no reliable theoretical approaches for calculating fully differential cross sections (FDCSs) for low-energy electron-impact ionization of large molecules. We have recently proposed the orientation-averaged molecular orbital (OAMO) for calculating cross sections averaged over molecular orientations. In this paper, we use the OAMO to calculate distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) and molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) Born approximation FDCS for electron-impact ionization of the nitrogen molecule. Both coplanar symmetric and asymmetric FDCSs are investigated in the energy range of 35.6-400 eV. by comparing with the experimental data, we found that the M3DW is reasonably accurate in this energy …

Field And Intensity Correlations In Amplifying Random Media, Alexey Yamilov, Shih-Hui Chang, Alexander Burin, Allen Taflove, Hui Cao Jan 2005

Field And Intensity Correlations In Amplifying Random Media, Alexey Yamilov, Shih-Hui Chang, Alexander Burin, Allen Taflove, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study local and nonlocal correlations of light transmitted through active random media. The conventional approach results in divergence of ensemble-averaged correlation functions due to the existence of lasing realizations. We introduce a conditional average for correlation functions by omitting the divergent realizations. Our numerical simulation reveals that amplification does not affect local spatial correlation. The nonlocal intensity correlations are strongly magnified due to selective enhancement of the contributions from long propagation paths. We also show that by increasing gain, the average mode linewidth can be made comparable to the average mode spacing. This implies that light transport through a …

Static Pairwise Annihilation In Complex Networks, M. F. Laguna, M. Aldana, H. Larralde, V. M. Kenkre, Paul Ernest Parris Jan 2005

Static Pairwise Annihilation In Complex Networks, M. F. Laguna, M. Aldana, H. Larralde, V. M. Kenkre, Paul Ernest Parris

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study static annihilation on complex networks, in which pairs of connected particles annihilate at a constant rate during time. Through a mean-field formalism, we compute the temporal evolution of the distribution of surviving sites with an arbitrary number of connections. This general formalism, which is exact for disordered networks, is applied to Kronecker, Erdös-Rényi (i.e., Poisson), and scale-free networks. We compare our theoretical results with extensive numerical simulations obtaining excellent agreement. Although the mean-field approach applies in an exact way neither to ordered lattices nor to small-world networks, it qualitatively describes the annihilation dynamics in such structures. Our results …

An Elementary Method For Calculating Orientation-Averaged Fully Differential Electron-Impact Ionization Cross Sections For Molecules, Junfang Gao, Jerry Peacher, Don H. Madison Jan 2005

An Elementary Method For Calculating Orientation-Averaged Fully Differential Electron-Impact Ionization Cross Sections For Molecules, Junfang Gao, Jerry Peacher, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Currently there are no reliable theoretical approaches for calculating fully differential cross sections (FDCS) for low-energy electron-impact ionization of large molecules. We have recently introduced the distorted-wave impulse approximation as a first step in developing improved theoretical approaches. One significant obstacle to evaluating improved theoretical approaches which require significant computer resources lies in the fact that the existing experimental data require taking averages over all molecular orientations. To circumvent this problem, it has been proposed to approximate the orientation-average by using an orientation-averaged molecular orbital in the calculation of the FDCS. The theoretical justification and expected range of validity for …

Critical Behavior And Griffiths Effects In The Disordered Contact Process, Thomas Vojta, Mark Dickison Jan 2005

Critical Behavior And Griffiths Effects In The Disordered Contact Process, Thomas Vojta, Mark Dickison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the nonequilibrium phase transition in the one-dimensional contact process with quenched spatial disorder by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations for times up to 109 and system sizes up to 107 sites. In agreement with recent predictions of an infinite-randomness fixed point, our simulations demonstrate activated (exponential) dynamical scaling at the critical point. The critical behavior turns out to be universal, even for weak disorder. However, the approach to this asymptotic behavior is extremely slow, with crossover times of the order of 104 or larger. In the Griffiths region between the clean and the dirty critical points, we …

Fully Differential Cross Sections For Low-Energy Electron-Impact Ionization Of Nitrogen Molecules, Junfang Gao, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher Jan 2005

Fully Differential Cross Sections For Low-Energy Electron-Impact Ionization Of Nitrogen Molecules, Junfang Gao, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Currently there is no accurate theoretical approach available for treating fully differential cross sections (FDCS) for low-energy electron-impact ionization of large molecules. For high incident energies, the plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA) generally yields good agreement with experimental data. In this paper, the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) is used to calculate FDCS for low-energy electron-impact ionization of N2. To perform the necessary average over all molecular orientations, we propose an orientation average (OA) approximation. Although the DWIA results represent an improvement over the PWIA for intermediate energies, an improved theory is necessary for lower energies. However, the OA approximation …

Joseph Bates: Originator Of Seventh-Day Adventist Mission Theory, George R. Knight Jan 2005

Joseph Bates: Originator Of Seventh-Day Adventist Mission Theory, George R. Knight

Faculty Publications

Joseph Bates was Seventh-day Adventism’s first theologian as well as the denominations first mission theorist. In the late 1840s he developed a chain- of-events approach to history and prophecy centering on the flow of events from Revelation 12:17-14:20. His prophetic chain-of-events logic eventually drove the denomination into worldwide mission as an eschatological imperative.

Post Reformation Ecclesiology And Missiology--From The Radicals To Wesley: Moving Out Of The Shadow Of Luther And Calvin, Woodrow W. Whidden Jan 2005

Post Reformation Ecclesiology And Missiology--From The Radicals To Wesley: Moving Out Of The Shadow Of Luther And Calvin, Woodrow W. Whidden

Faculty Publications

Whidden’s essay compares the key theological/ecclesiological factors of the Magisterial Reformation tradition with the Radical and Wesleyan ethos and their respective visions of discipleship, theology, ethics, and mission. He then argues that movements which are Arminian in their soteriology; functional, not institutional, in their ecclesiology; and emphasize discipleship (including strict discipline), sanctification, and Gospel ethics are more likely to have a missional bent.

This article examines some of the ways the church has traditionally met this challenge and then focuses on the place of cross-cultural mission in aiding the church to meet it.

Divination Bowls And Blood Simulacra In Colonial And Contemporary Mesoamerican Curing, Servando Z. Hinojosa Jan 2005

Divination Bowls And Blood Simulacra In Colonial And Contemporary Mesoamerican Curing, Servando Z. Hinojosa

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This study discusses 17th century Nahua practices of water divination in light of contemporary types of bowl divination practiced by Kaqchikel Mayas of Guatemala. The author argues that part of the efficacy of bowl divination among Kaqchikels, and possibly among Nahuas, rests upon the transformation of the water used into a simulacrum of blood. The creation and subsequent manipulation of this simulacrum enables the ritualist to effectuate key changes to the client's state of blood and, by extension, to the client's state of spirit.
