Medical Symptoms Associated With Tobacco Smoking With And Without Marijuana Abuse Among Crack Cocaine-Dependent Patients., Ashwin A. Patkar, Vikas Batra, Paolo Mannelli, Sarah Evers-Casey, Michael J. Vergare, Frank T. Leone

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

Despite the widespread use of tobacco and marijuana by cocaine abusers, it remains unclear whether combined tobacco and marijuana smoking is more harmful than tobacco smoking alone in cocaine abusers. We investigated the differences in medical symptoms reported among 34 crack cocaine abusers who did not smoke tobacco or marijuana (C), 86 crack cocaine abusers who also smoked tobacco (C + T), and 48 crack abusers who smoked both tobacco and marijuana (C + T + M). Medical symptoms were recorded using a 134-item self-report instrument (MILCOM), and drug use was assessed using the Addiction Severity Index (ASI). After controlling …

Effectiveness Of Instructional Strategies To Enhance The Reading Achievement Of At-Risk Students, Leila Christenbury Jan 2005

Effectiveness Of Instructional Strategies To Enhance The Reading Achievement Of At-Risk Students, Leila Christenbury

MERC Publications

Certainly researchers and teachers are in agreement regarding the components that are needed to read successfully and have a good idea of the skills that proficient readers consistently use. When children or older students are not able to read well or fluently or to comprehend their reading, the specific intervention strategies – and their duration and intensity – to bring those readers up to skill level remains an area of serious debate. This report will attempt to provide some background regarding that controversy and to look at selected recent research and its implications.

Host Blood Proteins And Peptides In The Midgut Of The Tick Dermacentor Variabilis Contribute To Bacterial Control, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Wayne L. Hynes, Shane M. Ceraul, Robert Mitchell, Tiffany Benzine

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Antimicrobial midgut proteins and peptides that result from blood digestion in feeding American dog ticks Dermacentor variabilis (Say) were identified. Midgut extracts from these ticks showed antimicrobial activity against Micrococcus luteus, regardless of whether they were challenged with peptidoglycan, blood meal components, rabbit blood, Bacillus subtilis, Escherischia coli or Borrelia burgdorferi. However, no peptide band co-migrating with defensin was found in midgut extracts from the challenged ticks. Partial purification of the midgut extracts using C18 Sep Paks and gel electrophoresis showed the presence of 4 distinct bands with rMW 4.1, 5.3, 5.7 and 8.0 kDa identified …

Phytoplankton Development Within Tidal Freshwater Regions Of Two Virginia Rivers, Usa, Harold G. Marshall, Lubomira Burchardt Jan 2005

Phytoplankton Development Within Tidal Freshwater Regions Of Two Virginia Rivers, Usa, Harold G. Marshall, Lubomira Burchardt

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Phytoplankton composition and the range of seasonal patterns of abundance are presented for the tidal freshwater regions in two Virginia rivers based on data accumulated monthly from 1986 through 1999. Diatoms dominated the flora during spring, summer, and fall, whereas, other taxonomic categories were more representative when the river flow rates decreased, allowing for a more stable water system and increased residency time within this tidal region during summer and early fall. This summer/fall period was associated with increased water temperatures, higher productivity rates and chlorophyll levels, increased total phytoplankton abundance and species diversity. The major components of the summer …

Toxicity and its detection in the dinoflagellate fish predators Pfiesteria piscicida and Pfiesteria shumwayae depend on the strain and the use of reliable assays. Two assays, standardized fish bioassays (SFBs) with juvenile fish and fish microassays (FMAs) with larval fish, were compared for their utility to detect toxic Pfiesteria. The comparison included strains with confirmed toxicity, negative controls (noninducible Pfiesteria strains and a related nontoxic cryptoperidiniopsoid dinoflagellate), and P. shumwayae strain CCMP2089, which previously had been reported as nontoxic. SFBs, standardized by using toxic Pfiesteria (coupled with tests confirming Pfiesteria toxin) and conditions conducive to toxicity expression, reliably detected …

Effects Of Human Disturbances On The Behavior Of Wintering Ducks, Melissa L. Pease, Robert K. Rose, Mark J. Butler Jan 2005

Effects Of Human Disturbances On The Behavior Of Wintering Ducks, Melissa L. Pease, Robert K. Rose, Mark J. Butler

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Human activity causes wintering waterfowl to expend energy to avoid humans at a time in their annual cycle when energy conservation is important to survival, migration, and breeding reserves. Understanding the effects of recreational activities on waterfowl is important to managing natural resource areas where migratory birds depend on wetland habitat for resting and feeding. We investigated responses of 7 species of dabbling ducks to 5 different experimental human activities, (a pedestrian, a bicyclist, a truck traveling at 2 different speeds, and an electric passenger tram). Responses of ducks depended on type of disturbance, species, and distance from disturbances. Most …

Isolation, X-Ray Structures, And Electronic Spectra Of Reactive Intermediates In Friedel−Crafts Acylations, M. G. Davlieva, Sergey V. Lindeman, I. S. Neretin, Jay K. Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Reactive intermediates in the Friedel−Crafts acylation of aromatic donors are scrutinized upon their successful isolation and X-ray crystallography at very low temperatures. Detailed analyses of the X-ray parameters for the [1:1] complexes of different aliphatic and aromatic-acid chlorides with the Lewis acids antimony pentafluoride and pentachloride, gallium trichloride, titanium and zirconium tetrachlorides provide unexpected insight into the activation mechanism for the formation of the critical acylium carbocations. Likewise, the X-ray-structure examinations of aliphatic and aromatic acylium electrophiles also isolated as crystalline salts point to the origins of their electrophilic reactivity. Although the Wheland intermediates (as acylium adducts to arene donors) …

Determining Physical Conditions In Star Forming Regions, Nicholas Paul Abel Jan 2005

Determining Physical Conditions In Star Forming Regions, Nicholas Paul Abel

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of the physical conditions in star-forming regions, and combines observational data and theoretical calculations. We studied the physical conditions of Orions Veil, which is an absorbing screen that lies along the line of sight to the Orion H II region. We computed photoionization models of the Veil. We combined calculations with UV, radio, and optical spectra that resolve the Veil into two velocity components. We derive many physical parameters for each component seen in 21 cm absorption. We find the magnetic field energy dominates turbulent and thermal energies in one component while the other component …

New Species Of Amphipod Crustaceans In The Genera Tegano And Melita (Hadzioidea : Melitidae) From Subterranean Groundwaters In Guam, Palau, And The Philippines, Thomas R. Sawicki, John R. Holsinger, Thomas M. Iliffe

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Three new species of Tegano are described, two from caves on Panglao Island, Bohol, Philippines, and one from a cave on Peleliu Island, Palau. Sriha vagabunda from Sri Lanka is reassigned to the genus Tegano based primarily on the high degree of similarity between Sriha vagabunda and species of Tegano and the fact that these species exhibit a great deal of variation in the reduction of the mandibular palp. A new species of Melita with characters intermediate between those defining the genera Abludomelita, Melita, and Paraniphargus is described from a spring on Guam. The characters of the new …

Mechanical Properties Of The Integument Of The Common Gartersnake, Thamnophis Sirtalis (Serpentes: Colubridae), Gabriel Rivera, Alan H. Savitzky, Jeffrey A. Hinkley

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The evolution of the ophidian feeding mechanism has involved substantial morphological restructuring associated with the ability to ingest relatively large prey. Previous studies examining the morphological consequences of macrophagy have concentrated on modifications of the skull and cephalic musculature. Although it is evident that macrophagy requires highly compliant skin, the mechanical properties of the ophidian integument have received limited attention, particularly in the context of feeding. We examined mechanical properties of skin along the body axis in Thamnophis sirtalis (Colubridae). Data were collected from tensile tests and were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and post-hoc multiple comparison …

The Architecture Of A Proteomic Network In The Yeast, Emad Ramadan, Christopher Osgood, Alex Pothern Jan 2005

The Architecture Of A Proteomic Network In The Yeast, Emad Ramadan, Christopher Osgood, Alex Pothern

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We describe an approach to clustering the yeast protein-protein inter-action network in order to identify functional modules, groups of proteins forming multi-protein complexes accomplishing various functions in the cell. We have developed a clustering method that accounts for the small-world nature of the network. The algorithm makes use of the concept of k-cores in a graph, and employs recursive spectral clustering to compute the functional modules. The computed clusters are annotated using their protein memberships into known multi-protein complexes in the yeast. We also dissect the protein interaction network into a global subnetwork of hub proteins (connected to several clusters), …

Resources On The Historical Study Of Jesus, Dennis Ingolfsland

The Christian Librarian

Jesus of Nazareth has been the center of significant media attention in recent years. Even before Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," Jesus had been the focus of featu re articles in Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News and World Report. Jesus was also the subject of television documentaries by PBS, A&E, T LC, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel and even a fu ll length prime time special by ABC News. Most presentations focus on Jesus as a man of history. In fact, the last 20 yea rs have been part of what scholars are now calling the "Third …

Description Of Light Propagation Through A Circular Aperture Using Nonparaxial Vector Diffraction Theory, Glen D. Gillen, Shekhar Guha Jan 2005

Description Of Light Propagation Through A Circular Aperture Using Nonparaxial Vector Diffraction Theory, Glen D. Gillen, Shekhar Guha

Physics

Using nonparaxial vector diffraction theory derived using the Hertz vector formalism, integral expressions for the electric and magnetic field components of light within and beyond an apertured plane are obtained for an incident plane wave. For linearly polarized light incident on a circular aperture, the integrals for the field components and for the Poynting vector are numerically evaluated. By further two-dimensional integration of a Poynting vector component, the total transmission of a circular aperture is determined as a function of the aperture radius to wavelength ratio. The validity of using Kirchhoff boundary conditions in the aperture plane is also examined …

A Freedom-Promoting Approach To Property: A Renewed Tradition For New Debates, Jedediah Purdy Jan 2005

A Freedom-Promoting Approach To Property: A Renewed Tradition For New Debates, Jedediah Purdy

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, Professor Purdy identifies, articulates, and defends a normative approach to property as an institution that promotes human freedom. The conception of freedom that the article defends is derived from the work of the Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen, and defines freedom as the achievement and enjoyment of capabilities, the power to do things along various dimensions of human potential - social, economic, political, physical, intellectual, artistic, and so forth. Professor Purdy's argument has several complementary dimensions. One is close attention to several areas of concrete, ongoing debate over reform in basic features of property rights: land title …

[Introduction To] Milonga Del Primer Tango: Traducción Y Lógicas De Escritura En La Abra De Jorge Luis Borges, Leonardo Bacarreza

Bookshelf

English

This book is an attempt to understand Jorge Luis Borges’s ideas about tango by going beyond an opposition the author himself created in his writing. In spite of being Argentinean, Borges frequently complained about the excessive local color, the exaggerated emotions, and the histrionic performances associated with this musical form. At the same time, he declared he had witnessed, in his childhood, the execution of a different form of tango, more brave and epic, more sober and simple. The world of this primitive tango is a recurrence in Borges’s writing.

The particularities of this recurrence are the subject of …

The Environmental Responsibility Of The Regionalizing Electric Utility Industry, Joel B. Eisen Jan 2005

The Environmental Responsibility Of The Regionalizing Electric Utility Industry, Joel B. Eisen

Law Faculty Publications

In this Article, I will address environmental issues in the context of our rapidly evolving understanding of "restructuring." The market for electricity is fast becoming a series of regional marketplaces for wholesale transactions, operating on bid-based systems that move power at the lowest cost. There are plenty of states where power is still delivered as it has been for decades: by "bundled" service provided by vertically integrated utilities. However, the trend is toward regionalization, where independent entities control the transmission grid and play a major role in determining how power is delivered. These market participants, confusingly, have been known by …

The Blackout Of 2003: What Is Next?, Joel B. Eisen Jan 2005

The Blackout Of 2003: What Is Next?, Joel B. Eisen

Law Faculty Publications

The blackout of August 2003 was a massive dislocation of American life, with millions of people in eight states and Canada losing power and a cost estimated in billions of dollars. As many as fifty million people were affected by the blackout. While the ultimate cause of the blackout is still being investigated, the implications for national policy may not be fully known for decades. The blackout was a wake up call and a watershed event that calls for reevaluation of just about every facet of the electric utility industry. We tend to think of a "wakeup call" as something …

fiscal years and deducted the overpayment from its payments to H during that year. The fiscal year 2000 was also the year that H filed for Chapter 11. H filed an adversary proceeding against US contending that the deductions within four months before H's bankruptcy filing were voidable preferential transfers and that US's deductions after the bankruptcy filing were in violation of the automatic stay. The bankruptcy judge, the district court judge, and a unanimous appellate court panel looked to the law of recoupment to hold that US's reduction of payments was neither a preferential transfer nor a violation of …

Coffee To Go! Modeling Thermoclines In Multivariable Calculus, Andrea Bruder, Brynja R. Kohler Jan 2005

Coffee To Go! Modeling Thermoclines In Multivariable Calculus, Andrea Bruder, Brynja R. Kohler

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

While mathematical modeling is an integral process in applied mathematics, students rarely encounter genuine modeling opportunities in their calculus courses. Here we introduce a laboratory experience as a natural starting point for calculus students to investigate multivariable functions. A layered system of coffee and milk serves as a physical model for temperature gradients in lakes or the atmosphere, where temperature depends on both a temporal and spatial variable. Students create, observe, and collect temperature data of their own, graph the data, and develop mathematical models to fit the data. We require students to write a report about their findings. This …

Marriage And Some Troubling Issues With No-Fault Divorce, Peter N. Swisher

Law Faculty Publications

The purpose of this Article is to challenge these erroneous assumptions, that fault is "no longer an issue" in modem American divorce law, and that a spouse on divorce should not be compensated for his or her non-economic contributions to the marriage and to the well-being of the family.
