A Computational Model Of Auditory Feature Extraction And Sound Classification, Martin Coath Jan 2005

A Computational Model Of Auditory Feature Extraction And Sound Classification, Martin Coath

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis introduces a computer model that incorporates responses similar to those found in the cochlea, in sub-corticai auditory processing, and in auditory cortex. The principle aim of this work is to show that this can form the basis for a biologically plausible mechanism of auditory stimulus classification. We will show that this classification is robust to stimulus variation and time compression. In addition, the response of the system is shown to support multiple, concurrent, behaviourally relevant classifications of natural stimuli (speech). The model incorporates transient enhancement, an ensemble of spectro - temporal filters, and a simple measure analogous to …

Computational Models Of The Thalamocortical Circuit: Sleep Oscillations And Receptive Fields., Nada Yousif Jan 2005

Computational Models Of The Thalamocortical Circuit: Sleep Oscillations And Receptive Fields., Nada Yousif

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The thalamus is a subcortical structure, which consists of a collection of functionally and morphologically defined nuclei. A subset of these, the sensory nuclei, receive information from the periphery and relay it to the related primary cortical area. Hence the thalamus was traditionaUy assumed to passively relay afferent information. However, the fact that thalamic relay cells receive a large proportion of their sjoiaptic inputs from the cortical cells to which they project, has led to the consensus that there is a more significant thalamic contribution to sensory processing. This thesis investigates the role of the thalamocortical feedback loop using population-level …

Environmental Assessment Of Biogeochemical Cycling Of Dissolved Organic Carbon (Doc) And Nitrogen (Don) In Natural Waters, El-Sayed A. Badr Jan 2005

Environmental Assessment Of Biogeochemical Cycling Of Dissolved Organic Carbon (Doc) And Nitrogen (Don) In Natural Waters, El-Sayed A. Badr

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Increases in human population and activities have lead to significantly enhanced inputs of carbon and nitrogen fiom both point and difiuse sources to rivers, estuaries, and coastal seas, altering the global carbon and nitrogen biogeochemical cycles. This increased load has had a marked ecological impact globally, with detrimental changes to primary production, conununity stricture and water quality. Understandmg the nature and cycling of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), significant components of the global carbon and nitrogen cycles, in estuaries will provide better estimates of C and N transport to coastal and ocean waters. This study involves: (1) optimisation …

Appropriate Practice? : A Study Of The Role And Co-Ordination Of Volunteer Appropriate Adults For Young Suspects, Harriet Louise Pierpoint Jan 2005

Appropriate Practice? : A Study Of The Role And Co-Ordination Of Volunteer Appropriate Adults For Young Suspects, Harriet Louise Pierpoint

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis reports on the first empirical study of the volunteer appropriate adult service for young suspects and the first attempt to determine the extent and nature of volunteer appropriate adult provision nationally. The investigation provides an original insight into the philosophy, role, practice and co-ordination of the appropriate adult. At an empirical level, the investigation fills a gap in the current work on the appropriate adult by considering the use of volunteers in the role, in terms of their practice and co-ordination and the extent and nature of their use. The empirical research is based on a detailed case …

Using Interactive Software As A Conceptual Tool: An Examination Of Cognition In Improvised Musical Performance, Timothy Thomas Sayer Jan 2005

Using Interactive Software As A Conceptual Tool: An Examination Of Cognition In Improvised Musical Performance, Timothy Thomas Sayer

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Viewing musical improvisation in the light of psychology and cognitive science, this thesis will explicate the rationale behind the development of a software based audiovisual interface for use in improvised solo instrumental performance. The evolution of the performance environment is presented along with the theories and concepts that have shaped its progress. The opening chapter will review the terms of reference used throughout the work and will set a boundary around the area of examination. Chapter two will place musical improvisation within the context of human behaviour and in so doing will draw upon theoretical discourse from the fields of …

Academic Feminism In Britain And The Usa 1980 And 1998: A Comparative Analysis, Rachel Torr Jan 2005

Academic Feminism In Britain And The Usa 1980 And 1998: A Comparative Analysis, Rachel Torr

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Questions concerning the relationship between knowledge and other factors in the social world are among those that have been central to contemporary academic debates both within and outside of academic feminism. Linking into these debates, this study is guided by one central, underlying question; "What relationships exist between the changing perspectives, themes and contexts of academic feminism in Britain and the USA?" Four hypotheses form the framework for the project These hypotheses are informed by recent debates within feminist theory that appear to emphasise the dominance of poststructuralism in 1990s feminism and literature addressing the social shaping of knowledge. By …

Performing A Practice: Narrative • Translation • Live Installation • Urban Intervention, Anya Lewin

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Abstract: This is a practice based PhD which follows several different lines of inquiryin order to pursue the ideas and territories which the practical worksthemselves lead to rather than imposing a question which the practical workhad to speak to. The practical works ore as much a port of the submissionas the text and each chapter includes a DVD with either the work, or if itwas site specific, the documentation. The text never seeks to explain thework but to expand and contextualise it. Although each chapter of thedocument is specific to a particular inquiry - mistranslation throughsubtitling, representations of the self …

Broken Contract : The Autobiographical Performance Or Producing 'Self' In The Act Of Writing A Life, Joshua Leo Sofaer Jan 2005

Broken Contract : The Autobiographical Performance Or Producing 'Self' In The Act Of Writing A Life, Joshua Leo Sofaer

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Taking as its starting point the definition of autobiography proposed by Philippe Lejeune in his essay 'The Autobiographical Contract', this study uses performance-based research to instigate a number of theoretical propositions which aim to test the boundaries of what is understood as autobiography. While the area under investigation is tightly focussed on the margins of autobiographical practices, examples and case studies range across literature (including J. M. Barrie, Marcel Proust and W. G. Sebald), performance practice (including Marina Abramovic, Tim Etchells and Zhu Yu), popular culture (including Blind Date, Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe) and philosophy (including Giorgio Agamben, Gilles …

The Influence Of Ethics And Social Responsibility On Grocery Shopping Behaviour In The Uk, Juliet Emma Memery Jan 2005

The Influence Of Ethics And Social Responsibility On Grocery Shopping Behaviour In The Uk, Juliet Emma Memery

Plymouth Business School Theses

Consumption as an aspect of most people's lives in affluent societies is widely acknowledged as having become increasingly important (Newholm, 2005). We consume more, and consume more often, than previous generations (Durning, 1992) meaning the actions we make and the decisions we take have greater impact than ever before on the world we inhabit. For many their involvement with consumption goes beyond the act of purchase (Oilman, 1998) to include complex ethical dimensions. The relationship between ethics and social responsibility (E&SR) and consumption choices has received growing attention over recent years, resulting in the topic of 'sustainable consumption' becoming a …

A Study For Branch Predictors To Alleviate The Aliasing Problem, Tieling Xie, Robert Evans, Yul Chu Jan 2005

A Study For Branch Predictors To Alleviate The Aliasing Problem, Tieling Xie, Robert Evans, Yul Chu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Modern processors usually have a deep pipeline, superscalar architecture to obtain higher performance. As pipelines are getting deeper, accurate branch prediction is critical to achieve high performance, since fetched instructions after a branch have to be flushed from inside the pipeline when the prediction is wrong. This paper studies the performance of several types of branch predictors, starting from local branch predictor and global branch predictor. Simulation results show that the global history predictor outperforms the local history predictor due to the characteristic that branches tend to be correlated. However, the global history predictor still suffers an aliasing problem that …

The Role Of Attachment To Obesity And Psychopathology, Gretchen Moran Marsh Jan 2005

The Role Of Attachment To Obesity And Psychopathology, Gretchen Moran Marsh

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Obesity and overweight have reached epidemic proportions in the United States (WHO, 1988). Despite the various treatment programs, the problem is getting worse, more people are becoming obese, and it is estimated that 90-95% of those who lose weight will regain it (Legro, 2000). Current treatment programs fail to take into consideration emotional variability within this population. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between attachment, BMI, and psychopathology. Obese participants (N = 101) seeking treatment for weight loss completed 3 questionnaires: 1) Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised, 2) Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-Ill, and 3)Questionnaire on Eating …

Carhampton Magistrate District In Relation To The 1856 County And Borough Police Act : A Case For Non-Statutory Policing, Janet Susan Setterington Jan 2005

Carhampton Magistrate District In Relation To The 1856 County And Borough Police Act : A Case For Non-Statutory Policing, Janet Susan Setterington

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The 1856 County and Borough Police Act had a pronounced effect on the criminal statistics in Somerset. Assize and Quarter Session committal statistics dropped across the county as a whole and this fall was reflected in six of seven individual magistrate areas studied. The seventh, the Carhampton magistrate district, showed no reduction in recorded crime. The records, in fact, suggest that the area was either subject to little criminal activity, or that people were not reporting offences. The lack of petty session records in Somerset prevented their inclusion in this study. In this thesis a number of criteria are applied …

Law's Nobility, Robin West Jan 2005

Law's Nobility, Robin West

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article first aims to set out the feminist theory of Catharine MacKinnon as explicitly as possible and in a way that accounts for its incredible power. To strengthen MacKinnon's theoretical project, the article proposes some modifications to the original that are drawn from, in part, the critiques of queer theorists. The crucial departure proposed here concerns MacKinnon's "critique of desire," which in my view is deeply mistaken. Rather than distrusting the sexual desires of women as hopelessly polluted by subordination, we should be neutral -- neither critical nor confident -- regarding the degree to which our desires, if fulfilled, …

Torture's Truth, Louis Michael Seidman Jan 2005

Torture's Truth, Louis Michael Seidman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this Article, I argue that the obstacles to having a serious conversation about torture are exacerbated by a truth that torture teaches us - a truth that we cannot afford fully to know and, so, frantically try to obscure. Law is about respect for commitments and limits, and the existence of torture challenges the possibility of such respect. If we are prepared to torture, then, it would seem, we are prepared to do anything, and the restraint that law purports to impose upon us is a fraud. Torture's truth, then, is that all of our promises to ourselves and …

American Medicine And The Politics Of Race, Maxwell Gregg Bloche Jan 2005

American Medicine And The Politics Of Race, Maxwell Gregg Bloche

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Straw men play a major role in the debate over racial disparity in American medicine. Most have been deployed by the disparities-denying right, but progressives intent on “outing” racism have sent forth their share. This essay flushes out the straw men while attempting to understand the competing moral premises that drive the politics of health care disparity. At bottom, arguments about the scope of disparity and discrimination in medical care are disputes about the appropriate scope of personal responsibility for life circumstances. Further research into the factors that correlate with racial differences in health care can shed light on the …

Banking Sector Reforms In Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jan 2005

Banking Sector Reforms In Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Why did we need reforms in the banking sector in the first place? Why is it so important to have healthy and buoyant banks? What is the exact role of State Bank of Pakistan and how does it go about performing this role? Where does the Government come in this picture? How do these reforms serve the interests of a common citizen as a consumer, depositor, and businessman? These and a host of other questions arise in the minds of a layman who is not so familiar with all the jargon and specialized terminology of finances.

Screening The Law: Ideology And Law In American Popular Culture, Naomi Mezey, Mark C. Niles Jan 2005

Screening The Law: Ideology And Law In American Popular Culture, Naomi Mezey, Mark C. Niles

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Article is an attempt to think critically about the pop cultural life of law, to investigate the legal and ideological messages that cultural images of law bear, and to explore how, why and to what extent television and film differ in their portrayals of law. While many legal scholars have addressed the legal content of popular culture in recent years, few have explored the field expansively or interrogated the significant differences in the images of law and legal institutions produced in the different popular media. Some scholars have traced one legal theme through popular culture generally, others have focused …

Concerted Evolution In Sm50, A Gene With Unusual Repeat Structure, Sofia Hussain Jan 2005

Concerted Evolution In Sm50, A Gene With Unusual Repeat Structure, Sofia Hussain

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Genes present in multiple copies and genes that contain regions of repetitive sequences can undergo concerted evolution, which results in homogenization of the nucleotide sequence of the genes or repetitive regions. In regions of tandem repeats, this occurs through misalignment of repeat units followed by unequal crossover, which generates two products with differing numbers of repeat units. Gene conversion is thought to lead to one of these products becoming fixed in a species. The homogenous sequence of previously studied genes that have been thought to undergo this process has made it difficult to determine the exact models involved. Here I …

Opportunistic Maintenance Policy Of A Multi-Unit System Under Transient State, Sulabh Jain Jan 2005

Opportunistic Maintenance Policy Of A Multi-Unit System Under Transient State, Sulabh Jain

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Most modern systems are equipped with very complex, expensive, and high technology components whose maintenance costs have become an increasingly large portion of the total operating cost of these systems. Thus, the efficacy of the maintenance policy for these and related systems has become a major concern to both manufacturing and design engineers. Different kinds of maintenance strategies have been proposed to solve the problem. While some of these have proven effective, there is yet no definitive approach that has been found that support the maintainability requirements of transient systems or systems that exhibit transient behavior. Transient behavior is the …

A Generalized Decision Model For Naval Weapon Procurement: Multi-Attribute Decision Making, Jin O. Chang Jan 2005

A Generalized Decision Model For Naval Weapon Procurement: Multi-Attribute Decision Making, Jin O. Chang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For any given reason, every year many countries spend a lot of money purchasing at least one weapon. Due to the secret character of the military, the decision process for specific weapon procurement is shrouded. Moreover, there are several funds loss cases due to mistakes in weapon contractions. Weapon procurement requires very large amounts of money which comes from tax payers. Therefore, an effort to reduce a possible monetary loss is needed.

A decision process based on an analytic model can present a better chance to decision makers for better weapon decisions. In general, weapon procurement decision is a multi …
