Dignity In Race Jurisprudence, Christopher A. Bracey Jan 2005

Dignity In Race Jurisprudence, Christopher A. Bracey

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Racial justice demands dignity; the acknowledgment and affirmation of the equal humanity of people of color. Denying dignity on the basis of color creates racial subordination, which triggers dignitary harms such as individual acts of racism and communal exclusion leading to diminished health, wealth, income, employment and social status. The legal recognition of dignity is therefore a prerequisite to political and social equality. For Americans of African descent, dignity was long denied by the legal endorsement of slavery and the degrading policies of segregation. The struggle to be treated equally human eventually found success in landmark cases such as Brown …

Human Mental Models Of Humanoid Robots, Sau-Lai Lee, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Sara Kiesler, Chi-Yue Chiu Jan 2005

Human Mental Models Of Humanoid Robots, Sau-Lai Lee, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Sara Kiesler, Chi-Yue Chiu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Effective communication between a person and a robot may depend on whether there exists a common ground of understanding between the two. In two experiments modelled after human-human studies we examined how people form a mental model of a robot's factual knowledge. Participants estimated the robot's knowledge by extrapolating from their own knowledge and from information about the robot's origin and language. These results suggest that designers of humanoid robots must attend not only to the social cues that robots emit but also to the information people use to create mental models of a robot.

Separately Nowhere Constant Functions; N-Cube And \Alpha-Prism Densities, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2005

Separately Nowhere Constant Functions; N-Cube And \Alpha-Prism Densities, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A function f from a countable product X of of Polish spaces Xi into a Polish space is separately nowhere constant provided it is nowhere constant on every section of X. We show that every continuous separately nowhere constant function is one-to-one on a product of perfect subsets of Xi's. This result is used to distinguish between n-cube density notions for different n\leq\omega, where \omega-cube density is a basic notion behind the Covering Property Axiom CPA formulated by Ciesielski and Pawlikowski. We will also distinguish, for different values of \alpha<\omega1, between the notions of \alpha-prism …

Protein Synthesis Required For Long-Term Memory Is Induced By Pkc Activation On Days Before Associative Learning, D. L. Alkon, H. Epstein, A. Kuzirian, M. C. Bennett, T. J. Nelson Jan 2005

Protein Synthesis Required For Long-Term Memory Is Induced By Pkc Activation On Days Before Associative Learning, D. L. Alkon, H. Epstein, A. Kuzirian, M. C. Bennett, T. J. Nelson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Protein synthesis has long been known to be required for associative learning to consolidate into long-term memory. Here we demonstrate that PKC isozyme activation on days before training can induce the synthesis of proteins necessary and sufficient for subsequent long-term memory consolidation. Bryostatin (Bryo), a macrolide lactone with efficacy in subnanomolar concentrations and a potential therapeutic for Alzheimer's disease, is a potent activator of PKC, some of whose isozymes undergo prolonged activation after associative learning. Under normal conditions, two training events with paired visual and vestibular stimuli cause short-term memory of the mollusc Hermissenda that lasts ≈7 min. However, after …

An Examination Of Natural Language Processing, Information Extraction, And Information Retrieval Systems And Their Applications, Jeffrey Allen Holloway Jan 2005

An Examination Of Natural Language Processing, Information Extraction, And Information Retrieval Systems And Their Applications, Jeffrey Allen Holloway

Honors Theses

Natural language processing, information extraction, information retrieval, and artificial Intelligence are all relatively new areas of study. Research as of late has begun making greater advances In these technological areas, yet much of the potential of these types of systems is still untapped. Though there are a few good examples of these systems put to use in the business world, due to technological limitations and pitfalls, these systems have yet to see widespread use. This thesis explores the technology behind the systems and looks into some of the current ways they are implemented. Finally, a system design referred to as …

Colored Red: A Memoir And Memoriam, Jordan Charles Hooper Jan 2005

Colored Red: A Memoir And Memoriam, Jordan Charles Hooper

Honors Theses

My paternal grandfather, Larry Jean Hooper Sr. (Paw), died suddenly of a heart attack on a warm morning in early November while preparing to meet my father, Dana Hooper, at their small farm a short road trip from home. They had been best friends - together in work and in play - since before I was bom and through all I can remember. Blood flowed from one to the other and the roads flowed beneath both of them, through the marshes and prairies and the hills and mountains, to the top and back again more times than they could remember, …

Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright Jan 2005

Corticosterone Response In A Learned Helplessness Model Of Depression, Courtney M. Cartwright

Honors Theses

This purpose of this study was to quantify both behavioral and biological markers of stress (i.e. distress vocalizations, plasma corticosterone) in the chick stress-separation paradigm. In this study, chicks were isolated from companions for either 5,10,15,20,40, or 60 minutes and distress vocalizations were recorded. In addition, one group was tested in the presence of social companions for 60 minutes. Blood was collected from half of the subjects immediately following the testing period and was also collected in a no-test group to establish plasma corticosterone basal levels. Isolation produced a significant elevation in distress vocalizations and corticosterone. The pattern of distress …

A Study Of The Effects Of The 2004 Tsunami On Coral Reefs And Fisheries Of The Indian Ocean, Joseph Lane Campbell Jan 2005

A Study Of The Effects Of The 2004 Tsunami On Coral Reefs And Fisheries Of The Indian Ocean, Joseph Lane Campbell

Honors Theses

This thesis serves as a broad-scale review of the effects of the tsunami on the coral reefs and the fisheries of the affected Indian Ocean region. The main goals were to 1) use my research from a recolonization project completed May 2004 as a basis for predictiverecovery models for the coral reefs, 2) review and summarize the newly available literature of the tsunami effects on coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and 3) predict the future of the Indian Ocean fisheries based on the review of the tsunami effects on human and fishery communities, using selected species as models. It …
