Turkish Journal of Zoology
This study was conducted in Lake Eğirdir in 2001 and 2002, to investigate some biological characteristics, i.e. sex and length compositions, length-weight relationship and reproduction, of the crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus Eschscholtz, 1823) population. Sex ratios of crayfish caught with fykenets of 34 - mm mesh size (stretched mesh) were 65.2% male and 34.8% female. The total body lengths of both sexes ranged from 40 to 150 mm and the majority were in the 110 mm length class. Although the average lengths of both sexes were nearly the same, the average weight of male crayfish was higher than that of females. …
Age, Growth And Reproduction Of The Goldband Goatfish, Upeneus Moluccensis (Bleeker, 1855), In İskenderun Bay, The Eastern Mediterranean, Ali̇ İşmen

Population Status Of The Taurus Frog, Rana Holtzi Werner (1898), In Its Terra Typica: Is There A Decline?, Uğur Kaya, İ. Ethem Çevi̇k, Uğur C. Eri̇şmi̇ş
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The herpetofauna of the Taurus Mountains is diverse, and many species are locally abundant. The Taurus frog, Rana holtzi, is endemic to Maden Lake in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. Although it was thought to be abundant in its restricted habitat, the population size of the Taurus frog and its related trend are uncertain. Like many animals, a great number of anurans have declined or become extinct over the past decades. In 2003, we conducted a mark-recapture study on the Taurus frog population in its terra typica. Our objective was to monitor R. holtzi in its terra typica to estimate …

The Effect Of Disturbances To Habitat Quality On Otter (Lutra Lutra) Activity In The River Kızılırmak (Turkey): A Case Study, İlhami̇ Tüzün, İrfan Albayrak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Habitat restriction for otters living in a small part of the Kızılırmak River occurred due mainly to 3 causes: dam construction at the upper end, heavy pollution by oil refinery effluent at the lower end and man-made activities such as housing and angling in-between. Sprainting activity was measured to assess habitat use by otters within the area and differences were shown between the sites. Compared to site II, higher sprainting activity was found at the site below the dam (site I), where habitat quality was poorer, as indicated by the water quality index (BMWP), diversity indices (Simpson's and Shannon-Wiever) and …

Allozyme Variation In Spalax Leucodon Nordmann, 1840 (Rodentia: Spalacidae) In The Area Between Ankara And Beyşehir, Teoman Kankiliç, Ercüment Çolak, Reyhan Çolak, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Eighty-one specimens belonging to 3 populations of Spalax leucodon collected in the area between Ankara and Beyşehir were electrophoretically analyzed. Three enzyme systems, isocitrate dehydrogenase (Idh), esterase (Est) and \alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (\alpha-Gpdh), were screened using horizontal starch gel electrophoresis, and 5 loci were determined. Three loci (Idh-1, Est-1, Est-3) were polymorphic, and 2 (Idh-2, \alpha-Gpdh) were monomorphic. Heterozygosity ranged from 0.1804 (in population A) to 0.2254 (in population K). Genetic divergency in 3 the populations resulted from the locus Idh-1 (F_{st} = 0.0372). The mean value of the fixation index in 3 the populations (F_{st} = 0.0266) reflected little genetic …

The Invariant Algorithm For Identification And Detection Of Multiple Gas Plumes And Weak Releases, Erin O'Donnell, David W. Messinger, Carl Salvaggio, John Schott
Articles
The ability to detect and identify gaseous effluents is a problem that has been pursued with limited success. It has been shown to bepossible using the Invariant algorithm on synthetic hyperspectralscenes with a strong single gas release. That however, is a veryspecific case and leaves room for further investigation. This studylooks at more realistic detection and release scenarios. Ourimplementation of the Invariant algorithm uses Singular ValueDecomposition (SVD) to select basis vectors from a subspace of targetgases in conjunction with a Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) to determine on a pixel by pixel basis how ``like" the target gas each pixel …

Spectral Imaging Using A Commercial Colour-Filter Array Digital Camera, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin, Mahdi Nezamabadi
Articles
A multi-year research programme is underway to develop and deliver spectral-based digital cameras for imaging cultural heritage at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The cameras will be used for documentation, production imaging, and conservation science. Three approaches have undergone testing: a liquid-crystal tunable filter (LCTF) coupled with a monochrome camera, a six-position filter wheel containing absorption filters coupled with a monochrome camera, and a two-position filter slider containing absorption filters coupled with a colour-filter array (CFA) colour camera. The last approach is the most practical as it uses conventional digital …

Evaluation Of A Modified Sinar 54m Digital Camera At The National Gallery Of Art, Washington Dc During April, 2005, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin
Articles
On April 26 – 27 2005, the RIT team brought their prototype Sinar 54M camera system to the National Gallery of Art’s Imaging Department. The team included Lawrence Taplin, Mitchell Rosen, and Roy Berns. RIT brought a spectroradiometer to measure the daylight fluorescent viewing illumination and if time allowed, NGA’s CRT display. They also brought a Macintosh G5 to control the camera and for image processing. NGA is using a production Sinar 54M. This enabled a direct comparison between NGA’s digital imaging workflow and the RIT workflow. Both cameras used the same lighting, Broncolor pulsed Xenon, lighting geometry, and photography …
Solving An Mri Spin Relaxometry Problem With Parallel Computing, Alan Kaminsky, Luke Mcomber
Solving An Mri Spin Relaxometry Problem With Parallel Computing, Alan Kaminsky, Luke Mcomber
Articles
MRI spin relaxometry is the process of recovering the spin density spectrum from the time samples of the spin signal for each pixel of a magnetic resonance image. Since healthy tissue exhibits different spin relaxation rates from diseased tissue, MRI spin relaxometry potentially has utility for diagnosing disease. However, recovering the spin relaxation rates involves solving an inverse problem which requires substantial computation. The computation's running time can be reduced by processing the pixels in parallel on a parallel computer. A parallel program for solving the MRI spin relaxometry problem, SRSolve, was implemented in Java with MPI, its running time …

A Search For Molecular Gas In Ghz-Peaked Spectrum Radio Sources, Christopher P. O'Dea, Jack Gallimore, Carlo Stanghellini, Stefi A. Baum, James M. Jackson
Articles
We present searches for molecular gas (CO, OH, CS, and NH3) in six GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources. We do not detect gas in any source and place upper limits on the mass of molecular gas which are generally in the range ~10^9 to a few times 10^10 M⊙. These limits are consistent with the following interpretations: (1) GPS sources do not require very dense gas in their hosts, & (2) The GPS sources are unlikely to be confined by dense gas and will evolve to become larger radio sources (Refer to PDF file for exact formulas).

Geometric Modeling Of Engineered Abrasive Processes, Andres L. Carrano, James B. Taylor
Geometric Modeling Of Engineered Abrasive Processes, Andres L. Carrano, James B. Taylor
Articles
One of the common issues that arises in abrasive machining is the inconsistency of the surface roughness within the same batch and under identical machining conditions. Recent advances in engineered abrasives have allowed replacement of the random arrangement of minerals on conventional belts with precisely shaped structures uniformly cast directly onto a backing material. This allows for abrasive belts that are more deterministic in shape, size, distribution, orientation, and composition. A computer model based on known tooling geometry was developed to approximate the asymptotic surface profile that was achievable under specific loading conditions. Outputs included the theoretical surface parameters, R^sub …

Close your eyes. Envision a succulent two-inch slab of dripping-rare prime rib. Is your stomach rumbling, your appetite peaked, or are you offended since your fundamental belief system precludes harming animals? A single image or idea can create many diferent feelings or interpretations. Consider the diversity within your own organization, campus, or community. Does everyone agree on what is appropriate, acceptable, appetizing, or attractive? An image pleasing to one group of people may alienate or even seriously offend many others. Something as simple as color may elicit dramatically different mental images. For example, in the U.S., white is generally associated …
The Unique Benefits Of Treating Personal Goodwill As Property In Corporate Acquisitions, Darian M. Ibrahim
The Unique Benefits Of Treating Personal Goodwill As Property In Corporate Acquisitions, Darian M. Ibrahim
Faculty Publications
Corporate acquisition talks may not get far if buyer and seller disagree over transaction structure, which can have significant after-tax effects. But the parties may have overlooked an item that, due to its potential tax treatment, could be the key to facilitating the acquisition. That item is the selling shareholder's "personal goodwill."
Personal goodwill exists when the shareholder's reputation, expertise, or contacts gives the corporation its intrinsic value. It is most likely to be found in closely held businesses, especially those that are technical, specialized, orprofessional in nature or have few customers and suppliers. If personal goodwill is treated as …

Meeting Expectations: Two Profiles For Specific Jurisdiction, Linda Sandstrom Simard
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
Personal jurisdiction doctrine is based upon the notion that the exercise of authority over a defendant is fair if the defendant has the ability to predict and control its jurisdictional exposure. Yet, the Supreme Court has neglected to clearly define the criteria by which courts are to define the scope of either general or specific personal jurisdiction, leading to a blurring of the concepts and disagreement among courts and scholars as to the appropriate contours of both types of jurisdiction. This Article focuses on defining the scope of specific jurisdiction to accurately reflect the purpose of the doctrine and suggests …

"Just Click Here": A Brief Glance At Absurd Electronic Contracts And The Law Failing To Protect Consumers, Mike Beishuizen
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
As e-commerce explodes around the world, consumers’ rights have been left behind. Before the completion of virtually every transaction on the Internet, the onus is placed on consumers to read and agree to an onslaught of terms and conditions. Often hidden in the middle of this extremely lengthy list of terms are massive exemption and limitation of liability clauses that deny consumers most if not all of their rights as “equal” trading partners. The common law principle that all onerous clauses in a contract need to be brought to the attention of the consumer for them to be binding seems …
