Stochastic Learning Feedback Hybrid Automata For Dynamic Power Management In Embedded Systems, T. Erbes, S. K. Shukla, Pushkin Kachroo Jan 2005

Stochastic Learning Feedback Hybrid Automata For Dynamic Power Management In Embedded Systems, T. Erbes, S. K. Shukla, Pushkin Kachroo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

Dynamic power management (DPM) refers to the strategies employed at system level to reduce energy expenditure (i.e. to prolong battery life) in embedded systems. The trade-off involved in DPM techniques is between the reductions of energy consumption and latency suffered by the tasks. Such trade-offs need to be decided at runtime, making DPM an on-line problem. We formulate DPM as a hybrid automaton control problem and integrate stochastic control. The control strategy is learnt dynamically using stochastic learning hybrid automata (SLHA) with feedback learning algorithms. Simulation-based experiments show the expediency of the feedback systems in stationary environments. Further experiments reveal …

The Drosophila Lymph Gland As A Developmental Model Of Hematopoiesis, Seung Hye Jung, Cory J. Evans, Christine Uemura, Utpal Banerjee Jan 2005

The Drosophila Lymph Gland As A Developmental Model Of Hematopoiesis, Seung Hye Jung, Cory J. Evans, Christine Uemura, Utpal Banerjee

Biology Faculty Works

Drosophila hematopoiesis occurs in a specialized organ called the lymph gland. In this systematic analysis of lymph gland structure and gene expression, we define the developmental steps in the maturation of blood cells (hemocytes) from their precursors. In particular, distinct zones of hemocyte maturation, signaling and proliferation in the lymph gland during hematopoietic progression are described. Different stages of hemocyte development have been classified according to marker expression and placed within developmental niches: a medullary zone for quiescent prohemocytes, a cortical zone for maturing hemocytes and a zone called the posterior signaling center for specialized signaling hemocytes. This establishes a …

Transgenic Mouse Model Of Tau Pathology In Astrocytes Leading To Nervous System Degeneration, Deepa V. Dabir Jan 2005

Transgenic Mouse Model Of Tau Pathology In Astrocytes Leading To Nervous System Degeneration, Deepa V. Dabir

Biology Faculty Works

Filamentous tau inclusions in neurons and glia are neuropathological hallmarks of sporadic and familial tauopathies. Because tau gene mutations are pathogenic for the autosomal dominant tauopathy "frontotemporal dementia and parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17," tau abnormalities are implicated directly in the onset and/or progression of disease. Although filamentous tau aggregates are acknowledged to play roles in degenerative mechanisms resulting in neuron loss, the contributions of glial tau pathology to neurodegeneration remain essentially unexplored. To begin to elucidate the role of glial pathology in tauopathies, we generated a transgenic (Tg) mouse model of astrocytic tau pathology by expressing the human tau …

Effect Of Microstructure And Alloying Elements On The Resistance Of Fastener Grade Steels To Hydrogen Assisted Cracking , Nicholas E. Nanninga Jan 2005

Effect Of Microstructure And Alloying Elements On The Resistance Of Fastener Grade Steels To Hydrogen Assisted Cracking , Nicholas E. Nanninga

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Fastener grade steels with varying alloy contents and heat treatments were employed to measure changes in resistance to hydrogen assisted cracking. The testing procedure compared notched tension specimens fractured in air to threshold stress values obtained during hydrogen charging, utilizing a rising step load procedure. Bainitic structures improved resistance by 10-20% compared to tempered martensite structures. Dual phase steels with a tempered martensite matrix and 20% ferrite were more susceptible and notch sensitive. High strength, fully pearlitic structures showed an improvement in resistance. Carbon content, per se, had no effect on the resistance of steel to hydrogen assisted cracking. Chromium …

New Media Reading Strategy, Cheryl E. Ball Jan 2005

New Media Reading Strategy, Cheryl E. Ball

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This dissertation addresses the need for a strategy that will help readers new to new media texts interpret such texts. While scholars in multimodal and new media theory posit rubrics that offer ways to understand how designers use the materialities and media found in overtly designed, new media texts (see, e.g,, Wysocki, 2004a), these strategies do not account for how readers have to make meaning from those texts. In this dissertation, I discuss how these theories, such as Lev Manovich’s (2001) five principles for determining the new media potential of texts and Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen’s (2001) four …

Through The Back Door : Melungeon Literacies And 21st Century Technologies, Katherine G. Vande Brake Jan 2005

Through The Back Door : Melungeon Literacies And 21st Century Technologies, Katherine G. Vande Brake

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The Melungeons, a minority recognized in Southern Appalachia where they settled in the early 1800s, have mixed heritage—European, Mediterranean, Native American, and Sub-Saharan African. Their dark skin and distinctive features have marked them and been the cause of racial persecution both by custom and by law in Appalachia for two centuries. Their marginalization has led to an insider mentality, which I call a “literacy” of Melungeon-ness that affects every facet of their lives.

Just a century ago, while specialized practices such as farming, preserving food, hunting, gathering, and distilling insured survival in the unforgiving mountain environment, few Melungeons could read …

Vegetation And Hydrologic Influences On Carbon And Nitrogen In Subsurface Water Of A Forested Riparian Wetland, Emily B. W. Calhoon Jan 2005

Vegetation And Hydrologic Influences On Carbon And Nitrogen In Subsurface Water Of A Forested Riparian Wetland, Emily B. W. Calhoon

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Vegetation communities affect carbon and nitrogen dynamics in the subsurface water of mineral wetlands through the quality of their litter, their uptake of nutrients, root exudation and their effects on redox potential. However, vegetation influence on subsurface nutrient dynamics is often overshadowed by the influences of hydrology, soils and geology on nutrient dynamics. The effects of vegetation communities on carbon and nitrogen dynamics are important to consider when managing land that may change vegetation type or quantity so that wetland ecosystem functions can be retained. This study was established to determine the magnitude of the influences and interaction of vegetation …

Corrugated Wood Composite Panels For Structural Decking, Wei Chiang Pang Jan 2005

Corrugated Wood Composite Panels For Structural Decking, Wei Chiang Pang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

High flexural strength and stiffness can be achieved by forming a thin panel into a wave shape perpendicular to the bending direction. The use of corrugated shapes to gain flexural strength and stiffness is common in metal and reinforced plastic products. However, there is no commercial production of corrugated wood composite panels. This research focuses on the application of corrugated shapes to wood strand composite panels.

Beam theory, classical plate theory and finite element models were used to analyze the bending behavior of corrugated panels. The most promising shallow corrugated panel configuration was identified based on structural performance and compatibility …

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Land application systems, also referred to as beneficial reuse systems, are engineered systems that have defined and permitted application areas based on site and waste characteristics to determine the land area size requirement. These terrestrial systems have orders of magnitude greater microbial capability and residence time to achieve decomposition and assimilation compared with aquatic systems. In this paper we focus on current information and information needs related to terrestrial fate pathways in land treatment systems. Attention is given to conventional organic chemicals as well as new estrogenic and pharmaceutical chemicals of commerce. Specific terrestrial fate pathways addressed include: decomposition, bound …

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

This study examined the effects of a dependent group contingency to increase positive verbal interactions among nine middle school-aged males in a self-contained classroom. Prior to implementing the group contingency, the students received social skills instruction. A withdrawal experimental design was then used to evaluate the effects of the dependent group contingency. Students' positive verbal interactions increased and negative verbal interactions decreased with the implementation of the dependent group contingency. When the group contingency was faded, positive and negative interaction levels were maintained. The results are discussed in terms of developing positive interaction skills among youth with emotional disturbance and …

Selecting Employees For Global Assignments: Can Assessment Centers Measure Cultural Intelligence?, Michael M. Harris, Filip Lievens Jan 2005

Selecting Employees For Global Assignments: Can Assessment Centers Measure Cultural Intelligence?, Michael M. Harris, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Our field is replete with attempts to measure and predict a variety of behaviors in the workplace, including task performance, contextual performance, counterproductive activity, to name but a few. One of the most recent types of behavior that organizations would like to predict is the ability to interact effectively with culturally-dissimilar others. Known by various names, including cultural intelligence or cultural adaptability, there is relatively little research as of yet regarding this topic. Nevertheless, given the growing recognition that the workplace increasingly operates in a global fashion, there is reason to believe that the literature regarding this topic will expand. …

Performances Of Stochastic Approaches In Generating Low Streamflow Data For Drought Analysis

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

This study analyzed the monthly-minimum daily discharge data of each month from three gauge stations on Cekerek Stream for forecasting using stochastic approaches. Initially non- parametric test (Mann-Kendall) was used to identify the trend during study period. The two approaches of stochastic modeling, ARIMA and Thomas-Fiering models, were used to simulate the monthly-minimum daily discharge data of each month. The error estimates (RMSE and MAE) of forecasts from both approaches were compared to identify the most suitable approach for reliable forecast. The two error estimates calculated for two approaches indicate that ARIMA model appear to be slightly better than Thomas-Fiering. …
