Legal Durability, Omri Ben-Shahar Jan 2005

Legal Durability, Omri Ben-Shahar

Articles

This paper develops a framework to study the effects of the durability of legal allocation decisions, such as trial outcomes, regulatory enactments and property entitlements. For a party favored by the legal allocation, a more durable decision is also more costly to secure, ex-ante. Thus, it is not the greater durability of the allocation that determines whether the “winner” is better-off, but other factors that are affected by the durability attribute, such as the cost of securing a favorable outcome and the ability of contesting parties to affect this cost. The paper develops conditions under which greater durability is irrelevant, …

The Sadness Of Great Fame: The Conflict Between Individuality And Expectation In The Works Of Don Delillo And Jim Morrison, Sue Ellen Norton Francis Jan 2005

The Sadness Of Great Fame: The Conflict Between Individuality And Expectation In The Works Of Don Delillo And Jim Morrison, Sue Ellen Norton Francis

Masters Theses

In their work and in their lives, Don DeLillo and Jim Morrison have been fascinated by the dialectic between famous figures and those whose adoration makes them famous. Each writer has written extensively about (and lived with) the conflict between a famous figure's individuality and the expectations of his fans. DeLillo depicts tensions between famous figures and admiring crowds in several ofhis novels, especially in his most thorough analyses ofthe subject, Great Jones Street, a portrait of a suddenly reclusive rock star, and Mao II, where he depicts a legendarily reclusive novelist. Morrison also has a personal connection with the …

Comparison Of Perceived And Actual Nutrition Needs Of College-Age Students, Amanda M. Goetze Jan 2005

Comparison Of Perceived And Actual Nutrition Needs Of College-Age Students, Amanda M. Goetze

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research was to assess the needs of Eastern Illinois University students regarding nutrition-related topics of concern and programming methods. Four hundred ninety-two students and four health professionals participated. The results indicate that students consume grains and vegetables in less than recommended amounts, fruits and dairy products within the recommended amounts, and meats, sweets, oils, and fats, and alcohol in excess. Nutritional issues affecting these students include management of weight, consumption of alcohol, and low intakes of iron, folate, and vitamin C. The perceptions of health professionals were not able to be compared to those of students; …

Molecular Identification Of Anopheles Spp. (Diptera: Culicidae) In The Chapare/Carrasco Valleys, Cochabamba, Bolivia, Corey Brelsfoard Jan 2005

Molecular Identification Of Anopheles Spp. (Diptera: Culicidae) In The Chapare/Carrasco Valleys, Cochabamba, Bolivia, Corey Brelsfoard

Masters Theses

Studies on malaria in our "backyard," the Neotropics, have been hampered by the lack of an accurate means of species identification for mosquito vectors of the human malaria parasite (i.e. Plasmodium spp). Mosquitoes in the genus Anopheles are the principle malaria vectors in the Neotropics and are often composed of closely related morphologically similar species complexes. This thesis describes three polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocols to aid in identifying four anopheline mosquitoes for any life stage, of which three have been incriminated as vectors of human malaria in several locations throughout S. America and might be potential vectors of human …

An Evaluation Of Beaver Habitat Models For Illinois Rivers, Daniel R. Cox Jan 2005

An Evaluation Of Beaver Habitat Models For Illinois Rivers, Daniel R. Cox

Masters Theses

Beavers (Castor canadensis) are agents of landscape change, altering the structure and species composition of vegetative communities through herbivory and water impoundment. To better manage beavers in Illinois, improved methods of monitoring riverine populations of this species are needed. The objectives of the study were to (1) locate, map and quantify the spatial distribution of beaver colonies along the Embarras River, (2) test the efficacy of 2 existing beaver habitat models, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) model and Missouri's beaver habitat model, for predicting the relative density of beavers and (3) develop a new multiple …

The Effects Of Habitat Quality On Abiotic Factors And Heterotrophic Microbial Activity In A Freshwater Stream System, Daphne Kampinga Jan 2005

The Effects Of Habitat Quality On Abiotic Factors And Heterotrophic Microbial Activity In A Freshwater Stream System, Daphne Kampinga

Masters Theses

Much of the Midwest, as well as Illinois' landscape, has largely been transformed from its original habitat of prairie, savanna, wetlands, and forest into corn and soybean fields and urban areas. As a result, less than 1% of the original habitat in Illinois remains intact today. These modifications can lead to habitat fragmentation and affect riparian zone vegetation, which is an important link between the land-water interface and influences processes such as organic matter inputs and water temperature regimes. As a result of fragmentation, riparian zone loss has occurred and catchment vegetation associated with streams can vary from agricultural fields, …

Landscape Effects On Stream Water Chemistry And Benthic Productivity In An Agricultural Watershed, Shari E. Fanta Jan 2005

Landscape Effects On Stream Water Chemistry And Benthic Productivity In An Agricultural Watershed, Shari E. Fanta

Masters Theses

A conceptual model was developed and utilized to investigate the influence of land use/land cover on community metabolism as mediated by stream water chemistry, in an agricultural watershed in east-central Illinois. A suite of physical and chemical variables were sampled over a yearlong period at twelve sites across the Hurricane Creek Watershed. Community metabolism was determined at five of the sites during episodes of suitable hydrologic and weather conditions. A single PCA axis was unique in incorporating significant relationships between land use/land cover, stream water chemistry, as well as community metabolism, thereby validating the conceptual model. The proportion of cropland, …

The Effects Of Service Delivery On Teacher Behavior, Miranda R. Glover Duncan Jan 2005

The Effects Of Service Delivery On Teacher Behavior, Miranda R. Glover Duncan

Masters Theses

The current study investigated how teacher assistance with articulation goals was affected by participation in traditional nonintegrated service delivery, consultative service delivery, and collaborative service delivery. Two kindergarten teachers participated in the single subject design comparing service delivery models. One speech-language pathologist consulted and collaborated with the teachers. During the traditional pull-out condition, the SLP informally communicated with teachers about the children in their classrooms who had speech-language deficits. Students with speech-language goals were treated in the pull-out setting, with no treatment provided in the classroom during this phase. The consultative condition involved the SLP meeting with each teacher weekly …

Copulatory Behaviors Of Male Caribbean Fruit Flies (Anastrepha Suspensa) And Female Sperm Storage Patterns, Holly J. Wallace

Masters Theses

Countless numbers of insects have copulatory behaviors performed while in copulation. Copulatory behaviors or copulatory courtship performed by males may be a means to influence female sperm storage patterns. Sexual selection in regards to female processes that influence male reproductive success are termed "cryptic female choice." In my thesis I examined copulatory behaviors performed by mass-reared male Anastrepha suspensa and sperm storage patterns in relation to male behavioral performance in females. I videotaped copulating virgin males and females of different ages and recorded mating duration, size of both sexes, male proboscis extensions, male probing of the females' head, thorax and …

Nonaqueous Platination For Synthesis Of Platinated 7 Alpha-Substituted Estradiol, Sarah A. Mazzella Jan 2005

Nonaqueous Platination For Synthesis Of Platinated 7 Alpha-Substituted Estradiol, Sarah A. Mazzella

Masters Theses

Cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin are used clinically for treating some cancers, but are they are not the preferred treatment for breast cancer. The usefulness of these platinum-containing drugs is limited by poor concentration of the active platinum moiety within the tumor before dose-limiting side effects are reached. One way to selectively concentrate a platinum antitumor compound in breast cancer cells is to conjugate the platinum moiety via a malonate linkage to an estrogen which selectively binds to the estrogen receptor (ER) protein. The major obstacle to linking a lipophilic estrogen to a diamino-platinum compound is the lack of solubility of …

Plant Species Turnover As A Mechanism Of Community Change In Response To Biotic And Abiotic Perturbation, Kathryn Anne Yurkonis Jan 2005

Plant Species Turnover As A Mechanism Of Community Change In Response To Biotic And Abiotic Perturbation, Kathryn Anne Yurkonis

Masters Theses

Plant communities change through time as species respond to changes in their biotic and abiotic environment. Biotic factors influencing plant communities can include species invasion, competition, or herbivory, whereas abiotic factors can include drought, fire, or nutrient deposition. Although factors influencing community structure have been extensively documented, the mechanisms by which communities respond to disturbances are not well understood. To address this problem, my thesis research considered two perturbations, exotic species invasion and drought, in each case I specifically relate species turnover to changes in community structure. The overall goal of this project was to evaluate the utility of using …

Variations In Elementary Teacher Education Programs Across The Midwest, Shannon Peters (Gauger) Jan 2005

Variations In Elementary Teacher Education Programs Across The Midwest, Shannon Peters (Gauger)

Masters Theses

School districts across the Midwest are constantly seeking out highly qualified teachers for our young students. No Child Left Behind has put a strain on administrators to find the most knowledgeable teachers being produced from elementary teacher education programs. Teachers need to have sufficient content area knowledge of mathematics, science and reading in order to help young students excel in these areas. Not only is the content area knowledge important, so are the strategies teachers use to relay the information. A comparison study was conducted to discover whether there were variances among elementary teacher education program requirements in the professional …

The Effects Of Employment On High School Performance, Erik Pizer Jan 2005

The Effects Of Employment On High School Performance, Erik Pizer

Masters Theses

Previous research on the effect of employment on high school performance has produced inconsistent results. This study investigates the influence of work hours on academic achievement, measured by grade point average (GPA). GPA is chosen because it is a more direct measure of performance in high school than standardized tests. It captures the day-to-day performance of students on everything from homework to quizzes and in-class participation to final examinations.

GPA falls by 0.02 grade points for every ten hours worked. This decrease in academic achievement caused by work may result from the displacement of extracurricular and co-curricular activities by work …

Observing, Navigating, Exploring: The Fourfold Path Of Nourishing Wrath And Others, Greg Holden Jan 2005

Observing, Navigating, Exploring: The Fourfold Path Of Nourishing Wrath And Others, Greg Holden

Masters Theses

A good poet to illustrate the distinction between modernism and postmodernism would be George Oppen (1908-1986). I believe Oppen's "objectivism" - coupled with a judicious use of deliberate ambiguity - nicely gets us past the postmodern insistence on the illusions of selfhood, reason, and order by insisting on the centrality of the perceiver/thinker amid the objective chaos of perceptions/ideas, while at the same time recognizing the multi-vocal construction of the perceiver/thinker. I believe the self may project its illusions onto reality, but not all reality (including the "self') is always thereby a false image. I have tried to fulfill Oppen's …

This thesis reveals details about the lyrics of sacred songs from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries that are pertinent to historic and modern Methodist music. Furthermore, it includes comparisons of numerous song texts and Bible verses. These compositions exhibit the most eminent church leaders' and composers' works from each stage of Methodist …

Politics And Gendered Spirituality In The Short Stories Of Sridaoru'ang, Rachel Ann Vaughn Jan 2005

Politics And Gendered Spirituality In The Short Stories Of Sridaoru'ang, Rachel Ann Vaughn

Masters Theses

This project pinpoints specific rudimentary concepts of the Thai Theravadan Buddhist philosophy, as they surface in the short stories of SriDaoRu’ang. Through these short stories, many of the ritualistic practices of this particular Buddhist philosophy are exemplified, presenting a dire need for the reformation of the rituals which tend to genderize and politicize the spiritual realm. This suggestion for the reformation of such practices and beliefs attempts to persuade the Theravadan world against polarized gender-specific practices that merely accentuate the differences between members of the Buddhist world, and act as a socio-political barrier for women and the poor. However, the …

Determining The Outcome Of Secession: The Cases Of East Timor, West Papua, And Aceh, Christopher K. Micks Jan 2005

Determining The Outcome Of Secession: The Cases Of East Timor, West Papua, And Aceh, Christopher K. Micks

Masters Theses

This thesis examines two factors that influence the success of a secessionist movement: the presence of a cohesive group within the secessionist movement and third party support for the secessionist movement. To understand the relevance of these two factors, the secessionist movements of East Timor, West Papua, and Aceh are tested. These three secessionist movements all occur in Indonesia and each one demands independence from Indonesia and wishes to form its own separate state. This thesis first examines the relevance of these two factors in East Timor because East Timor successfully achieved independence from Indonesia. Once finding that these factors …

Parting Of The Ways: The End Of The Spirit Of Empire In Paul Scott's Raj Quartet, Blake Strong Jan 2005

Parting Of The Ways: The End Of The Spirit Of Empire In Paul Scott's Raj Quartet, Blake Strong

Masters Theses

Paul Scott's The Raj Quartet consists of four novels dealing with the waning of British imperial control of India: The Jewel in the Crown (1966), The Day of the Scorpion (1968), The Towers of Silence (1972), and A Division of the Spoils (1976). This thesis analyzes the Quartet as historical fiction, defined according to the criteria laid out by Georg Lukacs in The Historical Novel (1937). The characters that populate Scott's Quartet live in an age of historical transition: they are shaped by reverberations from World War II as well as the more immediate struggle for Indian independence. As drawn …

The Construct Validity Of The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale Of Intelligence (Wasi) And The Wide Range Intelligence Test (Writ): Replication And Extension, Gregory S. Wilson Jan 2005

The Construct Validity Of The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale Of Intelligence (Wasi) And The Wide Range Intelligence Test (Writ): Replication And Extension, Gregory S. Wilson

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to further verify the relationship between the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) and the Wide Range Intelligence Test (WRIT) by replicating Collins' (2002) study regarding the convergent validity between these two tests. To assess the convergent validity of the WASI and WRIT, two newer brief intelligence tests, 86 participants from central Illinois public schools were administered both measures in counterbalanced order. All correlations between the WASI and WRIT were significant (p < .05). Furthermore, the correlations between the corresponding IQ scales and subtests of the WASI and WRIT were moderate to high, ranging from .55 (r2 = .30) to .82 (r²= .67). The results provided convergent evidence for the construct validity of the WASI and WRIT and supported the contention made by Collins (2002) that the WASI and WRIT are measuring similar constructs. The results of the joint exploratory factor analysis supported the retention of only one factor (general intelligence "g"). A forced, two-factor solution resulted in 10.50% more variation among WASI/WRIT subtest scores. However, the two factors correlated at a high magnitude (r = .75), and all subtests cross-loaded with their theoretical dissimilar factor. The results of the factor analysis supporteda conclusion that the WASI and WRIT are best conceptualized as providing strong measurements of general intelligence.

The Civic Development And Political Socialization Of High School Students: An In-Depth Look At One Southern Illinois School District, Jamie Bolander Weitl Jan 2005

The Civic Development And Political Socialization Of High School Students: An In-Depth Look At One Southern Illinois School District, Jamie Bolander Weitl

Masters Theses

Is there a difference in the way students are socialized and the amount of political knowledge they have based on location and socio-economic status? This thesis looks at one rural Illinois high school (East Richland High School, Olney, Illinois) through a 2004 school wide survey and compares results with Richard Niemi's "The Civic Development of9th through 12h-grade students in the United States," a 1996 nationwide survey of students.

To examine the political knowledge level of ERHS, student's overall political knowledge score was related to their parent's political party affiliation, grade level, gender, GPA, involvement in student council, involvement with community …

Exploring The Subjective Meanings And Experiences Of Depression, Reena Sheth Jan 2005

Exploring The Subjective Meanings And Experiences Of Depression, Reena Sheth

Masters Theses

This study aimed to provide subjectivist accounts of how people understand and interpret their experience of depression. In the mainstream research on depression, the voices of people who experience depression are largely absent. Therefore, the meanings and experiences of depression from the perspective of people who are living with depression themselves were explored in this study by drawing on in-depth interviews. The stories of two participants diagnosed with depression were examined using the holistic-content and the holistic-form analysis approach proposed by Lieblich, Mashiach, and Ziber (1998). Illness narrative forms outlined by Frank (1998) were also utilized to explore how the …
