Large Pyroelectric Response From Reactively Sputtered Aluminum Nitride Thin Films, Everett E. Crisman, John S. Derov, Alvin J. Drehman, Otto J. Gregory

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

We report the pyroelectric response of c-axis oriented, undoped, wurtzite, aluminum nitride reactively sputtered onto polished silicon wafers. The voltage between a metallic contact on the AlN surface and the n+ -doped silicon substrate was monitored during pulsed infrared, radiant heating. From analysis of the data, a pyroelectric voltage coefficient, PV, in excess of 0.5 x 106 V/m/K was extracted for films in the 600 to 2500 Å thickness range.

This paper is devoted to the numerical simulation of wave breaking. It presents the results of a numerical workshop that was held during the conference LOMA04. The objective is to compare several mathematical models (compressible or incompressible) and associated numerical methods to compute the flow field during a wave breaking over a reef. The methods will also be compared with experiments.

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading, Evan J. Fedorko, Robert Gilmore Pontius Jr., Stephen P. Aldrich, Luc Claussens, Charles S. Hopkinson, Wilfred M. Wollheim Jan 2005

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading, Evan J. Fedorko, Robert Gilmore Pontius Jr., Stephen P. Aldrich, Luc Claussens, Charles S. Hopkinson, Wilfred M. Wollheim

Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a method to improve landscape-pollution interaction regression models through the inclusion of a variable that describes the spatial distribution of a land type with respect to the pattern of runoff within a drainage catchment. The proposed index is used as an independent variable to enhance the strength, as quantified by R² values, of regression relationships between empirical observations of in-stream pollutant concentrations and land type by considering the spatial distribution of key land-type categories within the sample point’s drainage area. We present an index that adds a new dimension of explanatory power when used in conjunction with …

Transient Non-Linear Heat Conduction Solution By A Dual Reciprocity Boundary Element Method With An Effective Posteriori Error Estimator, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab Jan 2005

Transient Non-Linear Heat Conduction Solution By A Dual Reciprocity Boundary Element Method With An Effective Posteriori Error Estimator, Eduardo Divo, Alain J. Kassab

Publications

A Dual Reciprocity Boundary Element Method is formulated to solve non-linear heat conduction problems. The approach is based on using the Kirchhoff transform along with lagging of the effective non-linear thermal diffusivity. A posteriori error estimate is used to provide effective estimates of the temporal and spatial error. A numerical example is used to demonstrate the approach.

Angular Dependent Interaction Of Metastable Helium Molecules On The Surfaces Of Helium Nanodroplets, Raghuram Petluri Jan 2005

Angular Dependent Interaction Of Metastable Helium Molecules On The Surfaces Of Helium Nanodroplets, Raghuram Petluri

Open Access Dissertations

A metastable helium molecule is produced in a helium nanodroplet by electron bombardment. The molecule, identified as the long lived triplet state ([special characters omitted]), is found to reside on the surface of the droplet. Upon absorbing an infrared photon, it becomes detached from the surface of the droplet. The molecule is subsequently detected when it releases a secondary electron by striking a metal surface in the detector region. The photo-induced detachment process, which we call "Molecular Detachment Spectroscopy", is used to study the ro-vibrational structure of [special characters omitted] electronic transition in 910-985 nm region. The high resolution spectrum …

Group Identity Effects On Social Influence, Adviye Tolunay Jan 2005

Group Identity Effects On Social Influence, Adviye Tolunay

Open Access Dissertations

This experiment investigated the effects of different group identities on social influence in a sample of 294 predominantly first-year college students. The primary aim of this study was to test whether forming social identities on different criteria along the trivial-important dimension of group definition has significantly different effect on individuals' conformity to their group's majority opinion in response to social dilemmas. The second aim of this study was to investigate whether conformity to group norms occurs in computer mediated contexts, in which a person does not know the identities of his or her group members and is not in face-to-face …

Recovering Digital Evidence From Linux Systems, Philip Craiger Jan 2005

Recovering Digital Evidence From Linux Systems, Philip Craiger

Publications

As Linux-kernel-based operating systems proliferate there will be an inevitable increase in Linux systems that law enforcement agents must process in criminal investigations. The skills and expertise required to recover evidence from Microsoft-Windows-based systems do not necessarily translate to Linux systems. This paper discusses digital forensic procedures for recovering evidence from Linux systems. In particular, it presents methods for identifying and recovering deleted files from disk and volatile memory, identifying notable and Trojan files, finding hidden files, and finding files with renamed extensions. All the procedures are accomplished using Linux command line utilities and require no special or commercial tools.

Regulation Of Companies With Publicly Listed Share Capital In The People's Republic Of China, Nicholas C. Howson

Articles

Mr. Chairman, colleagues, and friends: It is a great honor for me to be able to address this group of experts and legislators, and many colleagues and friends, on a topic I care deeply about-the regulation of so-called public companies, both outside of China and, since the early 1990s, inside of China. First, and with many of the others invited to participate in this conference today and tomorrow, I thank the Office of Legislative Affairs ("OLA") of the State Council of the People's Republic of China ("PRC") as well as the China Securities Regulatory Commission ("CSRC") for convening this very …

Damage Caps: Recent Trends In American Tort Law, Mark K. Osbeck

Articles

Damage caps and other limitations on damages have become increasingly important in American tort law during the past thirty years. This trend shows no signs of abating; in fact, it has gained increasing momentum since President Bush took office in 2001. This chapter traces the evolution of damage caps and other limitations on damages and provides a summary of recent developments in this area.

Early Blue Crab Recruitment To Alternative Nursery Habitats In Mississippi, Usa, Chet R. Rakocinski, Donna Drury Mccall Jan 2005

Early Blue Crab Recruitment To Alternative Nursery Habitats In Mississippi, Usa, Chet R. Rakocinski, Donna Drury Mccall

Faculty Publications

Although seagrass in the lower segments of estuaries provides good nursery habitat for blue crabs, the role of alternative inshore habitats for early blue crab recruitment is not well-known. Using suction sampling, we examined the recruitment dynamics of early blue crabs (Callinectes spp.) over a 10-wk study period at 7 sites representing potential nursery habitats, including 2 marsh edge sites, 2 subtidal unvegetated sites adjacent to salt marsh, 2 subtidal unvegetated sites adjacent to developed marsh, and 1 upestuary subtidal vegetated site. Abundances of small (< 6.0 mm CW) and large (&GE; 6.0 mm) juvenile crabs varied over the study period, mainly reflecting two monthly pulses of small crabs coinciding with the new moon phase. Early crabs were Significantly more abundant from structured habitats than from subtidal unvegetated habitat; although small crabs were moderately abundant at subtidal unvegetated sites situated lower in the estuary. Large crabs were not abundant from subtidal unvegetated sites; whereas large crabs were abundant from sites with structured habitat. Subtidal unvegetated sites were characterized by crab size-distributions with single modes representing postsettlement crabs and with few large crabs; whereas structured habitats contained relatively more large crabs. However, crab size-distributions varied among structured habitats. Spatio-temporal variation in the early recruitment dynamics of blue crabs reflected temporal changes, such as lunar periodicity; landscape effects, such as proximity to currents; and habitat effects.

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This article discusses the constitutionality of Ohio Issue 1, an amendment to the state constitution that was adopted in a referendum by the people of the State of Ohio in November, 2004. The article consists of two parts. Part I sets forth arguments in support of the proposition that Ohio Issue 1 is unconstitutional. Part II sets forth arguments that have been or may be raised in support of Ohio Issue 1, and responds to each of those arguments.

Modification And Termination Of Irrevocable Trusts Under The Ohio Uniform Trust Code, Alan Newman, Jamie R. Minor Jan 2005

Modification And Termination Of Irrevocable Trusts Under The Ohio Uniform Trust Code, Alan Newman, Jamie R. Minor

Akron Law Faculty Publications

The adoption of the Ohio Uniform Trust Code (the “OUTC” or “the Code”) will constitute a comprehensive codification of trust law in Ohio. Among the many subjects it covers are the modification and termination of trusts. As noted in a comment to the national Uniform Trust Code (the “UTC”), “the overall objective of these [modification and termination] sections is to enhance flexibility consistent with the principle that preserving the settlor’s intent is paramount.” Given such factors as the increased use of trusts in recent years (including trusts created by non-lawyers and lawyers who do not specialize in estate planning); the …

Legal Durability, Omri Ben-Shahar Jan 2005

Legal Durability, Omri Ben-Shahar

Articles

This paper develops a framework to study the effects of the durability of legal allocation decisions, such as trial outcomes, regulatory enactments and property entitlements. For a party favored by the legal allocation, a more durable decision is also more costly to secure, ex-ante. Thus, it is not the greater durability of the allocation that determines whether the “winner” is better-off, but other factors that are affected by the durability attribute, such as the cost of securing a favorable outcome and the ability of contesting parties to affect this cost. The paper develops conditions under which greater durability is irrelevant, …
