Systematics Of Mesocestoides (Cestoda: Mesocestoididae): Evaluation Of Molecular And Morphological Variation Among Isolates, Kerry A. Padgett, Steven A. Nadler, Linda Munson, Ben Sacks, Walter M. Boyce

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A hypothesis-based framework was used to test if 3 genetic strains of Mesocestoides (clades A, B, and C) are distinct evolutionary lineages, thereby supporting their delimitation as species. For comparative purposes, 3 established cestode species, Taenia pisiformis, Taenia serialis, and Taenia crassiceps were assessed using the same methods. Sequence data from mitochondrial rDNA (12S) and the second internal transcribed spacer of nuclear rDNA (ITS-2) revealed derived (autapomorphic) characters for lineages representing clade A (n = 6 autapomorphies), clade B (n = 4), and clade C (n = 9) as well as T. pisiformis (n = 15) and T. serialis …

Molecular Phylogenetics And Diagnosis Of Anisakis, Pseudoterranova, And Contracaecum From Northern Pacific Marine Mammals, Steven A. Nadler, Stefano D'Amelio, Murray D. Dailey, Lia Paggi, Sandra Siu, Jusy A. Sakanari

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Individual specimens of Anisakis, Pseudoterranova, and Contracaecum collected from marine mammals inhabiting northern Pacific waters were used for comparative diagnostic and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Forty-eight new sequences were obtained for this study of 14 Anisakis taxa, 8 Pseudoterranova taxa, 4 Contracaecum taxa, and 4 outgroup species. Partial 28S (LSU) and complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1, 5.8S, ITS-2) ribosomal DNA was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction and sequenced. Sequences of ITS indicated that Pseudoterranova specimens from Zalophus californianus (California sea lion), Mirounga angustirostris (northern elephant seal), Phoca vitulina (harbor seal), Enhydra lutris (sea otter), and Eumetopias jubatus (Steller’s …

The Technology Of Biopower: A Response To Todd May's "Foucault Now?", Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 2005

The Technology Of Biopower: A Response To Todd May's "Foucault Now?", Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Because the occasion for his essay was the inaugural conference of the newly formed Foucault Society in New York City in the spring of 2005, Todd May takes as his point of departure the question of whether Foucault’s work is valuable to the sort of people who have come together to form that society: philosophers, artists, political activists, and in general to concerned citizens today, twenty years after Michel Foucault’s death. As might be expected given the Society’s raison d’être, May answers this question in the affirmative. But exactly how is Foucault’s work still relevant? It is his answer …

Service-Oriented Computing: Key Concepts And Principles, Michael N. Huhns, Munindar P. Singh Jan 2005

Service-Oriented Computing: Key Concepts And Principles, Michael N. Huhns, Munindar P. Singh

Faculty Publications

Traditional approaches to software development - the ones embodied in CASE tools and modeling frameworks - are appropriate for building individual software components, but they are not designed to face the challenges of open environments. Service-oriented computing provides a way to create a new architecture that reflects components' trends toward autonomy and heterogeneity. We thus emphasize SOC concepts instead of how to deploy Web services in accord with current standards. To begin the series, we describe the key concepts and abstractions of SOC and the elements of a corresponding engineering methodology.

Discord Behind The Table: The Internal Conflict Among Israeli Jews Concerning The Future Of Settlements In The West Bank And Gaza, Robert H. Mnookin, Ehud Eiran Jan 2005

Discord Behind The Table: The Internal Conflict Among Israeli Jews Concerning The Future Of Settlements In The West Bank And Gaza, Robert H. Mnookin, Ehud Eiran

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Our exclusive focus is on one of these conflicts-the profound internal rift among Israeli Jews over the Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. We are especially interested in the role of the national religious settlers and the Israeli government's response to them. These settlers lead the movement and are dominant actors in the internal conflict. The current controversies within Israel regarding Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's "unilateral initiative," which was not the product of a negotiation with Palestinians, demonstrate the importance of understanding the internal conflict within Israel and the dominant role of the leaders of the settlement movement

We report on the synthesis of PbTiO3–CoFe2O4 multiferroic nanocomposites and continuous tuning of their ferroelectric and magnetic properties as a function of the average composition on thin-film composition spreads. The highest dielectric constant and nonlinear dielectric signal was observed at (PbTiO3)85–(CoFe2O4)15, where robust magnetism was also observed. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a pancake-shaped epitaxial nanostructure of PbTiO3 on the order of 30 nm embedded in the matrix of CoFe2O4 at this composition. Composition dependent ferroics properties observed here indicate that there …

Mechanics Of Composite Materials In Fuel Cell Systems, Kenneth Reifsnider, Xinyu Huang, G. Ju, Matthew Feshler, K. An

Faculty Publications

The science and technology that are fundamental to the concept of composite materials are also the foundation for the construction and function of fuel cells and fuel cell systems. The present paper outlines this relationship in the context of the physics and chemistry that are enabled by the specific selection and arrangement of constituents of the “functional composite” fuel cell. General principles of operation are described, and fundamental issues are defined that must be addressed by the composites community if the fuel cell science and engineering is to advance. Examples of several types of functional composite fuel cells are presented, …

The Business Fallout From The Rapid Obsolescence And Plannedobsolescence Of High-Tech Products: Downsizing Of Noncompetition Agreements, Ann C. Hodges, Porcher L. Taylor Iii Jan 2005

The Business Fallout From The Rapid Obsolescence And Plannedobsolescence Of High-Tech Products: Downsizing Of Noncompetition Agreements, Ann C. Hodges, Porcher L. Taylor Iii

Law Faculty Publications

The recent rapid pace of technological change has made human capital more important, yet it has rendered the employee’s knowledge base obsolete more quickly. Employers use covenants not to compete, restricting employees from switching to work for competitors, in order to retain knowledgeable personnel. Currently, the lack of predictability in interpreting noncompete agreements allows employers to draft overly-lengthy noncompetes, encourages enforcement litigation, and curtails employees from changing jobs because of the fear of litigation. Employees should not be prevented from working for competitors for longer than is necessary to protect the employer’s legitimate interest. Use of obsolescence as a guide …

Bork Was The Beginning: Constitutional Moralism And The Politics Of Judicial Selection, Gary L. Mcdowell Jan 2005

Bork Was The Beginning: Constitutional Moralism And The Politics Of Judicial Selection, Gary L. Mcdowell

Law Faculty Publications

On October 23, 1987, the United States Senate committed what many considered then-and what many still consider today-to be an unforgivable political and constitutional sin. Wielding its power to advise and consent on nominations to the Supreme Court of the United States, the upper house voted 58-42 not to confirm Judge Robert H. Bork. The vote, which was the largest margin of defeat in history for a nominee to the Supreme Court, concluded one of the most tumultuous political battles in the history of the republic, a battle that would transform the process of judicial selection for years to come.

Does The Efficient Market Theory Help Us Do Justice In A Time Of Madness, William O. Fisher Jan 2005

Does The Efficient Market Theory Help Us Do Justice In A Time Of Madness, William O. Fisher

Law Faculty Publications

This Article questions how well the efficient market theory, as applied by event studies, works in cases originating during the Internet, high-tech, and telecommunications bubble of 1998 to 2001. In doing so, the Article discusses technical and theoretical challenges to the efficient market theory. Principally, however, this Article argues that the use of the efficient market theory-and relatedly the event study methodology-is inappropriate in bubble cases for normative reasons. The normative connection between the efficient market theory-applied through event studies-and the lOb-5 elements-reliance, materiality, loss causation, and damages-presupposes that the market acts rationally. Market professionals supposedly impose that rationality through …

Balancing Security And Human Rights: Post 9/11 Reactions In United States And Europe, Chiara Giorgetti Jan 2005

Balancing Security And Human Rights: Post 9/11 Reactions In United States And Europe, Chiara Giorgetti

Law Faculty Publications

The acts of 11 September 2001 demonstrated how vulnerable civilians are; in any part of the world, to terrorist attacks. This awareness led to a determined response by the international community to fight international terrorism iri all its forms. As governments and international organizations alike reevaluated the effectiveness and appropriateness of their counter-terrorist measures, the challenge emerged of conducting the fight against terrorism while respecting human rights and civil liberties. In fact, the wide consensus that actions are necessary to confront terrorism does not undermine the necessity to balance human rights considerations and preserve the democratic process.

As portrayed throughout …

Transient Analysis Of A Porous Electrode, Sheba Devan, Venkat R. Subramanian, Ralph E. White Jan 2005

Transient Analysis Of A Porous Electrode, Sheba Devan, Venkat R. Subramanian, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

An analytical expression is presented for the voltage response including the transient voltage for a simple (i.e., no concentration gradients) porous electrode model subject to a sinusoidal input current density. The transient voltage response as a function of the frequency, exchange current density, and double layer capacitance is studied independent of the periodic (steady state) voltage response. The change in the voltage response in the transient region is compared to that of the periodic voltage response with respect to the parameters. The physical properties of the porous electrode can be estimated using the voltage response in the transient …

Cubic Spline Regression For The Open-Circuit Potential Curves Of A Lithium-Ion Battery, Qingzhi Guo, Ralph E. White Jan 2005

Cubic Spline Regression For The Open-Circuit Potential Curves Of A Lithium-Ion Battery, Qingzhi Guo, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A cubic spline regression model was used to fit the experimental open-circuit potential (OCP) curves of two intercalation electrodes of a lithium-ion battery. All the details of an OCP curve were accurately predicted by the resulting model. The number of regression intervals used to fit an OCP curve was determined in a way such that in each regression interval the OCP exhibits a profile predictable by a third-order polynomial. The locations of the data points used to separate regression intervals were optimized. Compared to a polynomial model with the same number of fitting parameters, the cubic spline regression model is …

A Mathematical Model For A Lithium-Ion Battery/Electrochemical Capacitor Hybrid System, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov Jan 2005

A Mathematical Model For A Lithium-Ion Battery/Electrochemical Capacitor Hybrid System, Godfrey Sikha, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

A one-dimensional model for predicting the performance of a battery/electrochemical capacitor-hybrid system has been developed. Simulation results are presented for a LiCoO2|LiPF6 ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate|carbon battery system and a Maxwell PC 10F carbon double-layer electrochemical capacitor. The current shared between the battery and the electrochemical capacitor at very short times depends on the ohmic resistances of the battery and the capacitor. As the discharge proceeds, the operating conditions such as frequency, duty ratio, and peak pulse discharge current control the current shared among parallel circuits. These parameters also determine the extent of the run time increase of …

The New Iraq: Resolving Public And Private Obligations Incurred Under Saddam Hussein's Rule In The Context Of International Arbitration, Darius Adam Marzec

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Saddam Hussein's rule in Iraq collapsed on April 9, 2003, after an American-led coalition invasion. The coalition quickly deposed the Iraqi dictator and began the process of turning the nation away from authoritarian rule, murder, and death, to civility. While Saddam Hussein is gone, and no government-supported oppression of people exists, another form of tyranny persists: Iraq's modern economy is burdened with $383 billion in public debt and judgments. Adding insult to injury, after the coalition troops drove up to Baghdad through the desert, Iraq's banking system turned out to be insolvent.

The Unguided Use Of Internal Adr Programs To Resolve Sexual Harassment Controversies In The Workplace, Jessica Oser Jan 2005

The Unguided Use Of Internal Adr Programs To Resolve Sexual Harassment Controversies In The Workplace, Jessica Oser

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note will explore some of the concerns raised by the use of mandatory IDR mechanisms in the workplace, particularly in the context of resolving sexual harassment disputes. As previously noted, the use of IDR in the workplace can be highly effective and beneficial for both the employee and the employer. However, just as the Food and Drug Administration approves drugs that have potentially harmful side effects, the public and the U.S. government should approve of the use of IDR mechanisms despite the potential for abuse. In both circumstances, the public deserves to be warned about the possible dangers. This …

Law, Geography And Cyberspace: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel Jan 2005

Law, Geography And Cyberspace: The Case Of On-Line Territorial Privacy, Daniel Benoliel

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Territorial privacy, one of the central categories of privacy protection, involves setting limit boundaries on intrusion into an explicit space or locale. Initially, the Restatement (Second) of Torts, which defined the privacy tort of intrusion as applied by courts, most notably designated two classes of excluded areas: "private" places in which the individual can expect to be free from intrusion, and "non-private" places, in which the individual does not have a recognized expectation of privacy. In the physical world, courts ultimately held, almost uniformly, that the tort of intrusion could not occur in a public place or in a place …

Predicting Plant Extinction Based On Species-Area Curves In Prairie Fragments With High Beta Richness, Brian J. Wilsey, Leanne M. Martin, H. Wayne Polley Jan 2005

Predicting Plant Extinction Based On Species-Area Curves In Prairie Fragments With High Beta Richness, Brian J. Wilsey, Leanne M. Martin, H. Wayne Polley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Species-area relationships and island biogeography theory are commonly used to predict how species richness will decline with fragmentation. There are a variety of largely untested assumptions in these approaches, including the assumptions that populations are distributed uniformly before fragmentation, and that local extinctions are due to effects of small population sizes. If populations are not distributed uniformly, then populations can be abundant locally but rare globally. This would cause extinction rates to be smaller than predicted. We tested extinction theory by developing estimates of the number of plant species that should be present in small tallgrass prairie fragments and then testing …

Patterns Of Plant Species Diversity In Remnant And Restored Tallgrass Prairies, H. Wayne Polley, Justin D. Derner, Brian J. Wilsey

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

To restore diversity of native vegetation, we must understand factors responsible for diversity in targeted communities. These factors operate at different spatial scales and may affect the number and relative abundances of species differently. We measured diversity of plant species and functional groups of species in replicated plots within paired restored and remnant (relic) tallgrass prairies at three locations in central Texas, U.S.A.

A Modified Molybdenum Blue Method For Orthophosphate Determination Suitable For Investigating Enzymatic Hydrolysis Of Organic Phosphates, Zhongqi He, C. Wayne Honeycutt Jan 2005

A Modified Molybdenum Blue Method For Orthophosphate Determination Suitable For Investigating Enzymatic Hydrolysis Of Organic Phosphates, Zhongqi He, C. Wayne Honeycutt

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In characterizing organic phosphorus (Po) by phosphatase hydrolysis, the quantity of hydrolyzable Po is represented by the difference in orthophosphate [i.e., inorganic P (Pi)] determined after and prior to enzymatic incubation. Therefore, precise determination of Pi is of major importance for accurate application of the enzymatic hydrolysis approach. The strong acid conditions required for conventional molybdenum blue methods interferes with Pi determination due to rapid hydrolysis of labile Po and precipitation of enzymes (proteins). The molybdenum blue method of Dick and Tabatabai in 1977 reduced errors pertaining to nonenzymatic hydrolysis of P …

Comparison Of Protein Solubilization Methods Suitable For Proteomic Analysis Of Soybean Seed Proteins, Savithiry Natarajan, Chenping Xu, Thomas J. Caperna, Wesley M. Garrett Jan 2005

Comparison Of Protein Solubilization Methods Suitable For Proteomic Analysis Of Soybean Seed Proteins, Savithiry Natarajan, Chenping Xu, Thomas J. Caperna, Wesley M. Garrett

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Extraction of soybean seed proteins for two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D–PAGE) and mass spectrometry analysis is challenging and inconsistent. In this study, we compared four different protein extraction/solubilization methods—urea, thiourea/urea, phenol, and a modified trichloroacetic acid (TCA)/acetone—to determine their efficacy in separating soybean seed proteins by 2D–PAGE. In all four methods, seed storage proteins were well separated by 2D–PAGE with minor variations in the intensity of the spots. The thiourea/urea and TCA methods showed higher protein resolution and spot intensity of all proteins compared with the other two methods. In addition, several less abundant and high molecular weight proteins were …
