The Voices And Choices Project : Empowering Adolescent Readers, Jennifer L. Bouder Jan 2005

The Voices And Choices Project : Empowering Adolescent Readers, Jennifer L. Bouder

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This case study and literature review holistically examines how choice in independent reading material, reflection opportunities, and literacy activities affects the studyś participants ́motivation and willingness to read. Eight students were chosen for the case study and a qualitative research design was utilized that included questionnaires, anecdotal notes, at-task observational analyses, and exit interviews. The participants of the study were male and female seventh graders with varying degrees of reading level, English proficiency, and motivation to read. The study took place in a central California predominantly Hispanic and Caucasian middle school in a small rural kindergarten to twelfth grade school …

Feminist Art History And Theory At California State University Monterey Bay : A Descriptive Case Study Of A New Course : Action Thesis ..., Judith Swartz

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The lack of representation of women artists in art history can contribute to the notion that female students have nothing to contribute both historically and artistically. Female students of the arts could learn through feminist perspective art history curriculum that there is much more that counts as important contributions to art than what may be found in traditional coursework. California State University Monterey Bay has taken a leading role in providing alternative perspective curriculum to its students. This study examined a new feminist theory art history course to learn how this can best be presented and whether this can impact …

Global Phylogeography Of Thresher Sharks (Alopias Spp.) Inferred From Mitochondrial Dna Control Region Sequences : A Thesis ..., Tonatiuh Trejo Jan 2005

Global Phylogeography Of Thresher Sharks (Alopias Spp.) Inferred From Mitochondrial Dna Control Region Sequences : A Thesis ..., Tonatiuh Trejo

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The family Alopiidae is comprised of three species: the pelagic (Alopias pelagicus), bigeye (A. superciliosus), and common (A. vulpinus) thresher sharks. Alopias pelagicus occurs only in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, while the other two species are distributed worldwide. Despite growing conservation concerns, genetic relatedness among thresher shark populations is poorly known. I examined the phylogeographic structure of each species using DNA sequences from the mitochondrial control region. Alopias samples were collected from the East and West coasts of the United States, Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of California, Clipperton Atoll, Guatemala, Ecuador, Hawaii, Taiwan, Indonesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, South …

Ancient Hatred And Its Contemporary Manifestation: The Torture Of Lesbians, Susan Hawthorne Jan 2005

Ancient Hatred And Its Contemporary Manifestation: The Torture Of Lesbians, Susan Hawthorne

Journal of Hate Studies

This paper looks at a number of different elements that make up the experience of torture by lesbians in the contemporary world. I draw together elements of popular culture, along with testimonies by lesbians, concerning torture in diverse countries, as well as citing some historical sources. I examine the justifications and excuses given for torture, including the view that rape is a normal part of heterosexual activity. I argue that domination is exemplified in the punishment of lesbians as outsiders in patriarchal culture, in particular when groups and nations go to war.I also look at the way in which arguments …

The 800 Pound Gorilla Sleeps: The Federal Government's Lackadaisical Liability And Compensation Policies In The Context Of Pre-Event Vaccine Immunization Programs, Michael Greenberger Jan 2005

The 800 Pound Gorilla Sleeps: The Federal Government's Lackadaisical Liability And Compensation Policies In The Context Of Pre-Event Vaccine Immunization Programs, Michael Greenberger

Faculty Scholarship

On July 21, 2004, President Bush signed the Project Bioshield Act, which authorizes the spending of $5.6 billion to advance the development and acquisition of vaccines and other countermeasures to biological agents. While the funding and progress are welcome signs for our national biodefense strategy, the failure of the federal Phase I smallpox vaccination program demonstrated that other serious obstacles remain to the implementation of a successful pre-event vaccine immunization program. Specifically, as demonstrated by a field study of several states' health departments, performed at the ANSER Institute for Homeland Security, the federal government's inability to provide both sufficient liability …

Effect Of Casting Conditions On The Crystallization And Resulting Morphology In Compatibilized And Uncompatibilized Poly (Ethylene Oxide )-Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride) Blends, Tejas Upasani Jan 2005

Effect Of Casting Conditions On The Crystallization And Resulting Morphology In Compatibilized And Uncompatibilized Poly (Ethylene Oxide )-Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride) Blends, Tejas Upasani

Theses

This thesis describes the effect of casting conditions on the crystallization and resulting morphology in compatibilized and uncompatibilized blends of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly (vinylidene fluoride). Two systems based on grades of PVDF were used: Kynar 301, pure PVDF, and Kynar7201, a 80:20 copolymer of PVDF and hexafluoro propylene. Poly (methyl methacrylate) and poly (vinyl acetate) were used as compatibilizers. Acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran were used as common solvents to prepare the polymer blends. Two casting conditions were employed. In the first, hot polymer solutions were precipitated in cold hexane. In the second, the hot solutions were cast on aluminum pans. …

'Global Civil Society': A Sceptical View, Kenneth Anderson, David Rieff Jan 2005

'Global Civil Society': A Sceptical View, Kenneth Anderson, David Rieff

Contributions to Books

American University, WCL Research Paper No. 2008-69 Abstract: The editors of the leading yearbook of global civil society studies offered to the authors of this article an opportunity to present a skeptical account of global civil society as the opening chapter in the 2004/5 yearbook. The article examines the standard account of global civil society as the transnational equivalent, in a globalized world, of civil society in a domestic society, and further as, in Kofi Annan's oft-repeated view, international NGOs as the representatives of the peoples of the world to international organizations such as the UN. The article attacks this …

The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2005

The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Inspired by passionate contemporary debates about music copyright, this Article investigates how, when, and why music first came within copyright's domain. Ironically, although music publishers and recording companies are among the most aggressive advocates for strong copyright in music today, music publishers in eighteenth-century England resisted extending copyright to music. This Article sheds light on a series of early legal disputes concerning printed music that yield important insights into original understandings of copyright law and music's role in society. By focusing attention on this understudied episode, this Article demonstrates that the concept of copyright was originally far more circumscribed than …

Evaluation Of The Getting It Right Literacy And Numeracy Strategy In Western Australian Schools : Using Data To Support Student Learning, Marion Meiers

Shaping educational policy

This paper and the paper by Dr. Lawrence Ingvarson are companion pieces to Rosemary Cahill’s account of the intentions of the Getting it Right Literacy and Numeracy Strategy, and the model of professional development on which the strategy is based. In these papers, we present some findings from the ACER evaluation of Getting it Right. We provide detailed results from the surveys of principals undertaken in 2003 and 2004, including findings of the use of data to improve planning. These results provide evidence of the impact of the initiative, and evidence of an increase of the impact of the strategy over …

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The use of various types of technologies in the classroom and examinations is growing rapidly and is strongly influencing teaching and learning practices. In this paper, we will look at particular situations on how various technologies such as numerically capable calculators, graphics calculators, and technological tools that are CAS enabled or have CAS with Dynamic Geometry, impact students' learning. We also discuss briefly the educational opportunities that are made available by the emergence of graphics calculators with capabilities of handling electronic learning activities, such as Casio’s Class Pad (see [1]) and Casio’s 9860 graphics calculator.

Pre- And Post-Selection Paradoxes And Contextuality In Quantum Mechanics, Matthew S. Leifer, Robert W. Spekkens Jan 2005

Pre- And Post-Selection Paradoxes And Contextuality In Quantum Mechanics, Matthew S. Leifer, Robert W. Spekkens

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Many seemingly paradoxical effects are known in the predictions for outcomes of intermediate measurements made on pre- and post-selected quantum systems. Despite appearances, these effects do not demonstrate the impossibility of a noncontextual hidden variable theory, since an explanation in terms of measurement disturbance is possible. Nonetheless, we show that for every paradoxical effect wherein all the pre- and post-selected probabilities are 0 or 1 and the pre- and post-selected states are nonorthogonal, there is an associated proof of the impossibility of a noncontextual hidden variable theory. This proof is obtained by considering all the measurements involved in the paradoxical …

Extreme Rainfall In Texas: Patterns And Predictability, John W. Nielsen-Gammon, Fuqing Zhang, Andrew M. Odins, Boksoon Myoung

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Extreme rainfall, with storm total precipitation exceeding 500 mm, occurs several times per decade in Texas. According to a compositing analysis, the large-scale weather patterns associated with extreme rainfall events involve a northward deflection of the tropical trade winds into Texas, with deep southerly winds extending into the middle troposphere. One such event, the July 2002 South-Central Texas flood, is examined in detail. This particular event was associated with a stationary upper-level trough over central Texas and northern Mexico that established a steady influx of tropical moisture from the south. While the onset of the event was triggered by destabilization …

Simplicity, Or The Terror Of Belief: The Making And Unmaking Of The Self In Early Christian Monasticism, Douglas E. Christie Jan 2005

Simplicity, Or The Terror Of Belief: The Making And Unmaking Of The Self In Early Christian Monasticism, Douglas E. Christie

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The article focuses on ancient Christian monasticism. The simplicity admired and practiced by the early Christian monks, so often construed as a first order naiveté or credulity devoid of depth or subtlety, in fact contained and expressed a complex range of thought and feeling. More than this, it was, at least in its most mature expressions, a hard won achievement, realized only through a costly and demanding process of relinquishment. Ancient Christian monks actually did realize on occasion a simplicity that embodied a beautiful freedom and transparency. But such simplicity rarely came to expression in a life except through intense …

Commensurability Classes Of Twist Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan Jan 2005

Commensurability Classes Of Twist Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In this paper we prove that if MK is the complement of a non-fibered twist knot K in S3, then MK is not commensurable to a fibered knot complement in a Z/2Z-homology sphere. To prove this result we derive a recursive description of the character variety of twist knots and then prove that a commensurability criterion developed by D. Calegari and N. Dunfield is satisfied for these varieties. In addition, we partially extend our results to a second infinite family of 2-bridge knots.

We describe dynamical properties of a map defined on the space of rational functions. The fixed points of F are classified and the long time behavior of a subclass is described in terms of Eulerian polynomials.

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part I, Michael Berg Jan 2005

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part I, Michael Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We reformulate Hecke's open problem of 1923, regarding the Fourier-analytic proof of higher reciprocity laws, as a theorem about morphisms involving stratified topological spaces. We achieve this by placing Kubota's formulations of n-Hilbert reciprocity in a new topological context, suited to the introduction of derived categories of sheaf complexes. Subsequently, we begin to investigate conditions on associated sheaves and a derived category of sheaf complexes specifically designed for an attack on Hecke's eighty-year-old challenge.

From Loop Groups To 2-Groups, John C. Baez, Danny Stevenson, Alissa S. Crans, Urs Schreiber Jan 2005

From Loop Groups To 2-Groups, John C. Baez, Danny Stevenson, Alissa S. Crans, Urs Schreiber

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We describe an interesting relation between Lie 2-algebras, the Kac-Moody central extensions of loop groups, and the group String(n). A Lie 2-algebra is a categorified version of a Lie algebra where the Jacobi identity holds up to a natural isomorphism called the "Jacobiator". Similarly, a Lie 2-group is a categorified version of a Lie group. If G is a simply-connected compact simple Lie group, there is a 1-parameter family of Lie 2-algebras g_k each having Lie(G) as its Lie algebra of objects, but with a Jacobiator built from the canonical 3-form on G. There appears to be no Lie 2-group …
