Simplicity, Or The Terror Of Belief: The Making And Unmaking Of The Self In Early Christian Monasticism, Douglas E. Christie Jan 2005

Simplicity, Or The Terror Of Belief: The Making And Unmaking Of The Self In Early Christian Monasticism, Douglas E. Christie

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The article focuses on ancient Christian monasticism. The simplicity admired and practiced by the early Christian monks, so often construed as a first order naiveté or credulity devoid of depth or subtlety, in fact contained and expressed a complex range of thought and feeling. More than this, it was, at least in its most mature expressions, a hard won achievement, realized only through a costly and demanding process of relinquishment. Ancient Christian monks actually did realize on occasion a simplicity that embodied a beautiful freedom and transparency. But such simplicity rarely came to expression in a life except through intense …

Commensurability Classes Of Twist Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan Jan 2005

Commensurability Classes Of Twist Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In this paper we prove that if MK is the complement of a non-fibered twist knot K in S3, then MK is not commensurable to a fibered knot complement in a Z/2Z-homology sphere. To prove this result we derive a recursive description of the character variety of twist knots and then prove that a commensurability criterion developed by D. Calegari and N. Dunfield is satisfied for these varieties. In addition, we partially extend our results to a second infinite family of 2-bridge knots.

A Map On The Space Of Rational Functions, G. Boros, J. Little, V. Moll, Edward Mosteig, R. Stanley

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We describe dynamical properties of a map defined on the space of rational functions. The fixed points of F are classified and the long time behavior of a subclass is described in terms of Eulerian polynomials.

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part I, Michael Berg Jan 2005

Derived Categories And The Analytic Approach To General Reciprocity Laws. Part I, Michael Berg

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We reformulate Hecke's open problem of 1923, regarding the Fourier-analytic proof of higher reciprocity laws, as a theorem about morphisms involving stratified topological spaces. We achieve this by placing Kubota's formulations of n-Hilbert reciprocity in a new topological context, suited to the introduction of derived categories of sheaf complexes. Subsequently, we begin to investigate conditions on associated sheaves and a derived category of sheaf complexes specifically designed for an attack on Hecke's eighty-year-old challenge.

From Loop Groups To 2-Groups, John C. Baez, Danny Stevenson, Alissa S. Crans, Urs Schreiber Jan 2005

From Loop Groups To 2-Groups, John C. Baez, Danny Stevenson, Alissa S. Crans, Urs Schreiber

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We describe an interesting relation between Lie 2-algebras, the Kac-Moody central extensions of loop groups, and the group String(n). A Lie 2-algebra is a categorified version of a Lie algebra where the Jacobi identity holds up to a natural isomorphism called the "Jacobiator". Similarly, a Lie 2-group is a categorified version of a Lie group. If G is a simply-connected compact simple Lie group, there is a 1-parameter family of Lie 2-algebras g_k each having Lie(G) as its Lie algebra of objects, but with a Jacobiator built from the canonical 3-form on G. There appears to be no Lie 2-group …

A Group-Administered Timeline Followback Assessment Of Alcohol Use, Joseph W. Labrie, Eric R. Pedersen, Mitch Earleywine Jan 2005

A Group-Administered Timeline Followback Assessment Of Alcohol Use, Joseph W. Labrie, Eric R. Pedersen, Mitch Earleywine

Heads Up!

Objective: The current study compares retrospective self-reports of quantity and frequency of drinking with the Timeline Followback (TLFB) method administered in groups or to individuals to determine the equivalence of these methods.

Method: Two-hundred and eleven male college students who reported drinking at least two times per week participated; 118 completed the TLFB in a group setting and 93 completed it individually. Drinking variables assessed were drinking days, average drinks and total drinks during a 30-day period.

Results: Pearson's correlation coefficients revealed significant correlations between single-item quantity and frequency measures and the TLFB on all three variables for the two …

The Advent Of Neo-Revisionism?, Günter Bischof Jan 2005

The Advent Of Neo-Revisionism?, Günter Bischof

History Faculty Publications

Five distinguished scholars offer separate commentaries on the article by Michael Cox and Caroline Kennedy-Pipe. All of the commentators reject the broad interpretation and many of the specific arguments put forth by Cox and Kennedy-Pipe. They point out several crucial issues that are omitted from the article and raise questions about the authors’ sources, use of evidence, and selective invocation of secondary literature. They regret that Cox and Kennedy-Pipe seem to dwell on a large number of the same matters that preoccupied radical revisionist historians in the 1960s. They argue that although Cox and Kennedy-Pipe offer a more sophisticated version …

Faultlines, Faults, And Feelings: The Effects Of Subgroup Formation And Appraisals On Emotions In Groups, Katerina Bezrukova, Ira Roseman, John Phebus Jan 2005

Faultlines, Faults, And Feelings: The Effects Of Subgroup Formation And Appraisals On Emotions In Groups, Katerina Bezrukova, Ira Roseman, John Phebus

Psychology

This study examines the relationships between group faultlines, appraisals (evaluations) of group members, emotional responses, and performance in groups. The study uses a 2 by 2 experimental design, crossing demographic alignment (alignment vs. no alignment) and appraisals (instrumental vs. intrinsic) as between-subjects variables. Data from 5 types of measurement were used to analyze the effects of member alignment and appraisals.
