Bridging The Federalism Gap: Procedural Due Process And Race Discrimination In A Devolved Welfare System, Risa E. Kaufman Jan 2005

Bridging The Federalism Gap: Procedural Due Process And Race Discrimination In A Devolved Welfare System, Risa E. Kaufman

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

As recent Supreme Court decisions limit the power of the federal government to legislate and the federal courts to provide redress in areas such as civil rights, Congress is devolving significant power to states and localities to create and implement poverty-related programs. Individuals may thus face a greater risk of race discrimination within the welfare system with fewer statutory protections available to challenge such discrimination. This article …

The Roles Of The Buddha In Thai Myths: Reflections On The Attempt To Integrate Buddhism Into Thai Local Beliefs, Poramin Jaruworn

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The roles played by the Buddha in certain myths reflect the fact that the Buddha took over roles that were once performed by local gods. Such roles were the provision of fertility, light and water. Attitudes of the …

This article discusses the construction of Chinese-American identity in Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior. The method Kingston uses to make sense of these stories is that of translation. Translation refers to a performance of ethnic and gendered identity in Kingston's narrative. Here the complex identity known as Chinese-American is not an accumulation of discrete, distinct cultures, "Chinese and American', As a result of …
