Informational Efficiency: An Empirical Test In Asian Currency Crisis, Zhaohui Zhang, Khondkar E. Karim

In this paper, we examine whether the trading of the equities of the U.S. international lenders was informationally efficient when the IMF announced its term loan agreement concerning South Korea in late 1997. More specifically, we test whether the foreign exposure levels of different lenders can be distinguished and used by investors to rapidly price the lenders’ stocks proportionally according to the foreign exposure levels. A cross-sectional CAR regression model id used. The evidence indicates that the market is informationally efficient in trading the lenders’ equities during the IMF assistance of South Korea as investors incorporated the foreign exposure into …

Stock Options: To Expense Or Not To Expense. A Comparison Of Economic Determinants, Firm Payoffs, And Pay-Performance Sensitivity Of Executive Stock Option Compensation, Barbara Wood Nov 2005

Stock Options: To Expense Or Not To Expense. A Comparison Of Economic Determinants, Firm Payoffs, And Pay-Performance Sensitivity Of Executive Stock Option Compensation, Barbara Wood

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

Until June 2005, firms had a choice in accounting for stock option compensation. The majority of firms elected to disclose option compensation expense in the footnotes of their financial statements. However, after the accounting scandals in the early 2000s, many firms moved from disclosing the expense to recognizing the expense as a charge against earnings. This research examines the reasons that firms would voluntarily elect to adopt option recognition prior to regulatory requirement. The decision to recognize option pay is examined with respect to efficient contracting, earnings management, and information signaling. Firms that elect to expense option pay do so …

“Sons Of Adam”: Text, Context, And The Early Modern African Subject, Herman L. Bennett

Publications and Research

Seeking to dislodge the prism that a singular political practice—represented as the story from savage to slave—informed the slave trade, this essay points to a distinct genealogy shaping the earliest encounters between Europeans and Africans.

Are Middle Years Teacher Education Courses Justifiable?, Terry De Jong, Rod Chadbourne Nov 2005

Are Middle Years Teacher Education Courses Justifiable?, Terry De Jong, Rod Chadbourne

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The recent growth of separate middle schools for young adolescents raises the question – do we now need separate teacher education programs in middle schooling? Or, can the staffing requirements of middle schools be met adequately by existing primary and secondary teacher education programs? This paper provides a contribution to answering these questions by discussing the rationale underlying a new graduate diploma in the middle years of schooling offered at Edith Cowan University. In doing so, the paper draws attention to the contested nature of innovations in teacher education and some uncertainty about what the future holds for them.

Frugal And (Sometimes) Wrong, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 2005

Frugal And (Sometimes) Wrong, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Do moral heuristics operate in the moral domain? If so, do they lead to moral errors? This brief essay offers an affirmative answer to both questions. In so doing, it responds to an essay by Gerd Gigerenzer on the nature of heuristics, moral and otherwise. While focused on morality, the discussion bears on the general debate between those who emphasize cognitive errors, sometimes produced by heuristics, and those who emphasize the frequent success of heuristics in producing sensible judgments in the real world. General claims are that it is contentious to see moral problems as ones of arithmetic, and that …

Book Review: Jonathan Steinberg, Why Switzerland?, Jurg K. Siegenthaler Nov 2005

Book Review: Jonathan Steinberg, Why Switzerland?, Jurg K. Siegenthaler

Swiss American Historical Society Review

"Any decent biography," a New York Times book reviewer recently remarked, "is a work of drama." Jonathan Steinberg's Why Switzerland? is truly a biography of Switzerland, and the story often has the substance of drama. Since the book has no subtitle, the author explains the three ways in which he is intending to answer the question "why." Why has a place such as Switzerland come about? Why should readers abroad care? And why should Switzerland continue to exist? "No country is more frequently visited but less known" (p. 4). What Steinberg manages to do very well is to provide answers …

Last Hired, First Fired? Black-White Unemployment And The Business Cycle, Kenneth A. Couch, Robert Fairlie Nov 2005

Last Hired, First Fired? Black-White Unemployment And The Business Cycle, Kenneth A. Couch, Robert Fairlie

Economics Working Papers

Past studies have tested the claim that blacks are the last hired during periods of economic growth and the first fired in recessions by examining the movement of relative unemployment rates over the business cycle. Any conclusion drawn from this type of analysis must be viewed as tentative because the cyclical movements in the underlying transitions into and out of unemployment are not examined. Using Current Population Survey data matched across adjacent months from 1989 to 2004, this paper examines labor market transitions for prime age males to test this hypothesis. Considerable evidence is presented that blacks are the first …

Implementation Of An Electronic Payment Card For Sd Division Of Child Support, Tara Falor

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

This paper will be discussing the implementation of an electronic payment card for the Division of Child Support Enforcement (DCS). The DCS was looking for an additional means to distribute monies to custodial parents through an electronic interface. They were already taking advantage of the benefits of direct deposit but still had many custodial parents that did not have banking relationships to make direct deposit as option for them . A Request for Proposal (RFP) was sent out in search of a vendor who could provide assistance with such a task. USBank was able to deliver and implement exactly what …
