For a Banach D-bimoduleMover an abelian unital C*-algebraD, we define E1(M) as the collection of norm-one eigenvectors for the dual action of D on the Banach space dual M#. Equip E1(M) with the weak*-topology. We develop general properties of E1(M). It is properly viewed as a coordinate system for M when M C, where C is a unital C*-algebra containing D as a regular MASA with the extension property; moreover, E1(C) coincides with Kumjian’s twist in the context of C*-diagonals. Should unauthorized immigrants be allowed to legally work within the borders of the United States? This question is at the heart of the debate over the use of guest worker programs in America. Many believe guest worker programs that include these undocumented immigrants would actually be harmful. They fear these immigrants would not leave the country after their legal status has expired and that the conditions for many American workers would diminish.

The effects of cultural values and perceptions of cultural values on social support and acculturative stress are examined in this study. Japanese international students and American students completed several instruments to facilitate both the comparison and perception of each other’s cultural values and whether the accuracy of Japanese students’ perception of American students’ values was related to self-reported stress in the Japanese students. There were 11 Japanese international students and 46 American students from Salve Regina University participating in the study. Somewhat surprisingly, Japanese and American participants were shown to have similar individualist cultural values, and the American participants scored …

Got ID? Having an official form of identification is imperative in the United States for legal, travel and government purposes. The increases in illegal immigration and security concerns in this country have caused officials to evaluate the role of driver’s licenses as forms of identification with legal and illegal immigrants. Traditionally driver’s licenses have been granted to legal citizens only; however, several states have adopted systems making it easier for illegal immigrants to qualify for distinct certificates to drive. When the Ladies’ Home Journal began in 1883, its creator, Mr. Cyrus H. K. Curtis, could not have possibly dreamed that the magazine would grow to be the most influential woman’s journal of all time. A material culture analysis of American nationalistic emblems published in the Ladies’ Home Journal between 1890 and 1900 will determine how Edward Bok, editor, controlled nationalism in the feminine market, displaying the openness of women to nationalism in the late 19th century. A Preliminary Investigation Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy As A Treatment For Chronic Skin Picking, Michael P. Twohig, Steven C. Hayes, Akihiko Masuda

The effectiveness of a deliberately limited version of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for chronic skin picking was evaluated in a pair of multiple baseline across participants designs. Self-monitoring of skin picking showed that four of the five participants reached near zero levels of picking by post-treatment, but these gains were not fully maintained for three of the four participants at follow-up. The findings of the self-reported skin picking were generally corroborated by ratings of photographs of the damaged areas and by ratings on a validated measure of skin picking severity. We present new observations of the white dwarf G29-38 with the camera (4.5 and 8 μm), photometer (24 μm), and spectrograph (5.5-14 μm) of the Spitzer Space Telescope. This star has an exceptionally large infrared excess, amounting to 3% of the bolometric luminosity. The spectral energy distribution (SED) has a continuum peak around 4.5 μm and a 9-11 μm emission feature 1.25 times brighter than the continuum. A mixture of amorphous olivine and a small amount of forsterite in an emitting region 1-5 R☉ from the star can reproduce the shape of the 9-11 μm feature. The SED …

The case of Wirzburger v. Galvin, currently on a writ of certiorari to the Supreme Court, may set the tone for all religious discrimination cases in the future. Massachusetts’ constitutional amendments that proscribe any citizen initiatives from either dealing with religion in general or attempting to repeal the states Blaine Amendment are at issue in the case. Petitioner’s counsel, the Becket Fund, rightly views this case as paramount in the long-march to victory over the anti-Catholic Blaine Amendments still codified in 37 state constitutions. However, they have lost almost every stage of the case.
