This research project focuses on strategies for increasing intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy beliefs of participants in the one to two day corporate training session. It consists of three primary components: (1) identifying strategies that can be utilized to increase intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy beliefs through a review of literature and interviews with corporate trainers, (2) testing of strategies within training sessions to determine if utilizing the strategies results in an increase of participants' intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy beliefs, and (3) developing a handbook outlining these strategies that can be utilized by corporate trainers. Probing Attractive Forces At The Nanoscale Using Higher-Harmonic Dynamic Force Microscopy, S. Crittenden, Arvind Raman, R. Reifenberger

We systematically investigate higher harmonics in the vibration spectrum of scanning force microscope cantilevers operating in the attractive regime. We show that a the magnitudes of the higher-harmonic signals in the vibration spectrum should be directly correlated to the local van der Waals forces for systems without significant electrostatic interactions and b the higher-harmonic resonances are much sharper than the fundamental harmonic. Consequently, and unlike the case of the tapping mode operation, contrast in the amplitudes of the higher harmonics over a scanned sample with small electrostatic forces reflects changes in specific chemical composition. Mass Spectrometry Assisted Assignment Of Nmr Resonances In Reductively 13C-Methylated Proteins, Megan A. Macnaughtan, Austin M. Kane, James H. Prestegard

Reductive 13C-methylation of proteins has been used as an isotope labeling strategy to study protein structure, function, and dynamics by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. However, assigning the resulting 13C-dimethylamine peaks in a 1H-13C NMR spectrum has proved to be difficult, but it is important to expand the scope of the method. The assignment strategy presented here utilizes mass spectrometry (MS) for sequence identification and varying 13C/12C isotope ratios to correlate with NMR data. The site-specific reactivity of the lysines and N-terminal amine of a protein is exploited to produce a sample with varying 13C/12C ratios at each dimethylamine. MS …

Adaptive Weighing Of Context Models For Lossless Data Compression, Matthew V. Mahoney

Until recently the state of the art in lossless data compression was prediction by partial match (PPM). A PPM model estimates the next-symbol probability distribution by combining statistics from the longest matching contiguous contexts in which each symbol value is found. We introduce a context mixing model which improves on PPM by allowing contexts which are arbitrary functions of the history. Each model independently estimates a probability and confidence that the next bit of data will be 0 or 1. Predictions are combined by weighted averaging. A Bloody Tradition: Ethnic Cleansing In World War Ii Yugoslavia, Paul Bookbinder

New England Journal of Public Policy

When World War II began, a climate for mass violence already existed. The author examines the history of ethnic cleansing, cultural cleansing, mass murder, and genocide in Yugoslavia – Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Hertzegovena, and Kosovo – and finds that the historical atrocities are alive in active memory today. With a new awareness of the consequences of ethnic hatred, people can study their own histories cleansed of myth and nationalist delusions so that wars that unleash ethnic violence can be stopped before these excesses erupt.

Intervening In The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A Strategy And Its Risks, David Matz

The primary problem in reaching a peaceful arrangement between the Israelis and the Palestinians is that a significant number of people on both sides reject dividing the land between the Mediterranean and Jordan (the two-state solution), and neither local government (not the Israelis nor the Palestinians) can control their own rejectionists. As long as any "solution" assumes that the local governments will be able to confront these rejectionists, that plan will fail. The only way around this is with the use of an international coalition composed, at least, of the United States, the EU, the UN, and Arab countries. The …

During austral summer 2003, we tracked a patch of surface water infused with the tracer sulfur hexafluoride, but without addition of Fe, through subantarctic waters over 10 days in order to characterize and quantify algal Fe pools and fluxes to construct a detailed biogeochemical budget. Nutrient profiles characterized this patch as a high-nitrate, low-silicic acid, low-chlorophyll (HNLSiLC) water mass deficient in dissolved Fe. The low Fe condition was confirmed by several approaches: shipboard iron enrichment experiments and physiological indices of Fe deficiency (F(v)/F(m) < 0.25, Ferredoxin Index < 0.2). During FeCycle, picophytoplankton (0.2-2 mu m) and nanophytoplankton (2-20 mu m) each contributed >40% of total chlorophyll.
