SOLINET, Amigos Library Services, Inc., NELINET, Nylink, and PALINET announce the launch ofthe Network Education Exchange, a cooperative training program that makes selected online courses available to the members of the five networks. The purpose of this new exchange program is to provide their memberships with expanded opportunities to develop skills and knowledge via online training and to provide more cost-effective services by leveraging time and resources among the networks’ staff.

The Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) finalized a new partnership with the University of Alabama’s School of Library and Information Studies to provide additional service hours for its groundbreaking regional virtual reference service, “Ask a Librarian.” To mark the expanded service, ASERL will give away a 1MB iPod Shuffle to one user of the online reference service at each participating ASERL institution.

The aspergilli comprise a diverse group of filamentous fungi spanning over 200 million years of evolution. Here we report the genome sequence of the model organism Aspergillus nidulans, and a comparative study with Aspergillus fumigatus, a serious human pathogen, and Aspergillus oryzae, used in the production of sake, miso, and soy sauce. Our analysis of genome structure provided a quantitative evaluation of forces driving long-term eukaryotic genome evolution. It also led to an experimentally validated model of mating-type locus evolution, suggesting the potential for sexual reproduction in A. fumigatus and A. oryzae. Our analysis of sequence …

Foreign Migration To The Cleveland-Akron-Lorain Metropolitan Area From 1995 To 2000, Mark Salling, Ellen Cyran

This report is one of a series on migration to and from the region using the five percent Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) of the 2000 Census of Population and Housing and provides a description of foreign migrants moving to the Cleveland-Akron-Lorain (CAL) Consolidated Metropolitan Area (CMSA) from 1995 to 2000.* The report identifies the countries of origin of migrants and compares the demographic, socioeconomic, and housing characteristics of the foreign migrants to the CAL with other groups, including foreign migrants to Ohio and the nation, and, at times, to domestic migrants to and from the CAL.

At the request of the Concerned Citizens for Lake Township (CCLT), Bennett & Williams, Environmental Consultants, Inc. were asked to again revisit the Uniontown Industrial Excess Landfill (IEL) Superfund site, located in Uniontown, Ohio. Bennett & Williams (B&W) first began evaluating this site in the early 1990s, has been involved in three court actions concerning the site, and drafted the Lake Township Comments on the Existing Public Record (1999) which was submitted on behalf of the Township to the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Alleviating Linear Ecological Bias And Optimal Design With Subsample Data, Adam Glynn, Jon Wakefield, Mark Handcock, Thomas Richardson

In this paper, we illustrate that combining ecological data with subsample data in situations in which a linear model is appropriate provides three main benefits. First, by including the individual level subsample data, the biases associated with linear ecological inference can be eliminated. Second, by supplementing the subsample data with ecological data, the information about parameters will be increased. Third, we can use readily available ecological data to design optimal subsampling schemes, so as to further increase the information about parameters. The study of the cell-cycle is important in order to aid in our understanding of the basic mechanisms of life, yet progress has been slow due to the complexity of the process and our lack of ability to study it at high resolution. Recent advances in microarray technology have enabled scientists to study the gene expression at the genome-scale with a manageable cost, and there has been an increasing effort to identify cell-cycle regulated genes. In this chapter, we discuss the analysis of cell-cycle gene expression data, focusing on a model-based Bayesian approaches. The majority of the models we describe …
