Exploring Ethical Considerations For The Use Of Biological And Physiological Markers In Population-Based Surveys In Less Developed Countries, Gregory Pappas, Adnan A. Hyder

Community Health Sciences

Background: The health information needs of developing countries increasingly include population-based estimates determined by biological and physiological measures. Collection of data on these biomarkers requires careful reassessment of ethical standards and procedures related to issues of safety, informed consent, reporting, and referral policies. This paper reviews the survey practices of health examination surveys that have been conducted in developed nations and discusses their application to similar types of surveys proposed for developing countries.DISCUSSION: The paper contends that a unitary set of ethical principles should be followed for surveys around the world that precludes the danger of creating double standards (and …

A Rhetoric Of Sports Talk Radio, John D. Reffue Nov 2005

A Rhetoric Of Sports Talk Radio, John D. Reffue

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sports talk radio is a broadcast format that has grown exponentially through the 1990's and into the early part of the twenty-first century. Academic publications about the format, especially qualitative analyses, have been extremely limited and previous radio content researchers have called for a more in-depth study of talk radio, in particular the relationships between and among callers, hosts and the listening audience.

This study examines sports talk radio as a format separate from political talk radio programming. An evolution of the format from its roots as a broadcast novelty to the modern day stand-alone genre is traced, including an …

Optimized Parameters For Electrochemical Fabrication Of P-Type Silicon-Based Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystals, Wan-Yun Zhang, Jia-Rong Ji, Xiao-Dong Yuan, Wei-Min Ye, Zhi-Hong Zhu

Journal of Electrochemistry

A two-dimensional photonic band structure based on macroporous silicon with a gap centered at 20 μm has been achieved for the first time. A medium doped p-type (100) silicon substrate was patterned by the standard photolithograpgy and alkaline efthing. And this pre-patterned sample was then etched 90 μm deep by electrochemical pore formation in the mixture of hydrofluoric-acid and dimethylformamide (DMF) to produce a quare lattice of circular air rods with a lattice constant of 3.8 μm and the very high aspect ratio up to 30. The optimized electrochemical parameters such as eletrolytical components and the current density were 5 …

Effect Of Hco3- Concentration On Co2 Corrosion In Gas And Oil Fields, Guo-An Zhang, Min-Xu Lu, Yin-Shun Wu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The effecs of HCO3- concentration on CO2 corrosion in gas and oil fields were investigated by carrying out potentiodynamic scans and weight loss tests.Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed that the cathodic current density decreased with cm increase of HCO3- concentration when HCO3- was lower than 0.042(mol/L). The cathodic reations were promoted by increasing HCO3- when it reached 0.126 mol/L, Anodic behavior was an active process at low er [HCO3-] concentration and the anodic current density decreased with the increase of [HCO3-] concentration. An evident active-passive behavior …

An Electrochemical Study Of Electroless Copper Plating Using Glyoxylic Acid As Reducing Agent, Li-Qiong Wu, Fang-Zu Yang, Ling Hang, Shi-Gang Sun, Shao-Min Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electroless copper plating using glyoxylic acid as a reducing agent,Na2EDTA as a chelating agent and K4FeCN6 and 2,2'-dipyridyl as additives was studied. The effect of chelating agent and addtives on the polangation behaviovs of copper reduction and glyoxylie acid oxidation were analyzed by linear sweep voltammetry. The results mainly demonstrated that the chelating agent hindered both the oxidation of glyoxylic acid and the reduction of copper complexing ions. It has revealed that K4FeCN6 and 2,2'-dipyridyl (with the content over than 20 mg/L) both played negative actions on the oxidation of glyoxylic …

Electrochemical Properties Of Aloe Emodin In Aqueous And Nonaqueous Solvents, Li-Ying Huang, Zhong-Cheng Wang, Li-Min Lai, Xin-Hua Lin, Wei Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electrochemical properties of Aloe emodin in aqueous and nonaqueous solvents of DMSO were studied by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry at a platinum electode. A pairs of currents on the voltammogram may be attributed to a quasi-reversible-one-electron transfer in HAc-NaAc and DMSO, the peak potential in DMSO was found to move more negatively compared with that in HAc-NaAc. A new method for Aloe emodin determination is described. The peak current is proportional to the concentration of Aloe emodin over the ranges of 1.0×10-5~6.0×10-4 mol/L. The electrochemical properties of Aloe emodin were related to solvents.

The Electrocatalystic Investigation Of 3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic Acid On The Modified Multiply Wall Carbon Nanotubes, Ming-Qi Li, Duo-Chang Cai, Xiao-Ying He

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical behavior of 3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic acid(DHBA) on modified multiply wall carbon nanotubes electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry(CV) and square wave voltammetry(SWV). Results show that in 0.1 mol/L HCl solutions the modified carbon nanotube electrode has an obvious electrocatalytic effect on the oxidation and deoxidization of DHBA. The oxidation current of DHBA is linear to it's concentration in the range of 4.0×10-6~1.0×10-4 mol/L and 2.0×10-4~8.0×10-4 1mol/L with correlation coefficient of 0.9995 and 0.9992. The detection limit is 1.0×10-6 mol/L.

Inclusive jet cross sections in photoproduction for events containing a D* meson have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 78.6 pb-1. The events were required to have a virtuality of the incoming photon, Q2, of less than 1 GeV2, and a photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the range 130 < Wγp < 280 GeV. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD calculations. Good agreement is found with the NLO calculations over most of the measured kinematic region. Requiring a second jet in the event allowed a more detailed comparison with QCD calculations. The measured dijet cross sections are also compared to Monte Carlo (MC) models which incorporate leading-order matrix elements followed by parton showers and hadronisation. The NLO QCD predictions are in general agreement with the data although differences have been isolated to regions where contributions from higher orders are expected to be significant. The MC models give a better description than the NLO predictions of the shape of the measured cross sections. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Brain-Computer Interface To Control A Prosthetic Hand / Yong Xin Yi, Xin Yi Yong Nov 2005

A Brain-Computer Interface To Control A Prosthetic Hand / Yong Xin Yi, Xin Yi Yong

Student Works (2000-2009)

A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system was developed to operate a prosthetic hand and other devices. The Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded over the sensorimotor cortex area during foot, left or right hand motor imagery. Only two mental tasks and one or two EEG bipolar channels were identified and used in the online experiments. Autoregressive (AR) modeling was used to extract the features from the spontaneous EEG signals and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) was used as the classifier. Six subjects participated in the online study. However, only three subjects had sufficient control to proceed to the final application phase. The online …

Kno.e.sis Publications

As the Semantic Web gains importance for sharing knowledge on the Internet this has lead to the development and publishing of many ontologies in different domains. When trying to reuse existing ontologies into their applications, users are faced with the problem of determining if an ontology is suitable for their needs. In this paper, we introduce OntoQA, an approach that analyzes ontology schemas and their populations (i.e. knowledgebases) and describes them through a well defined set of metrics. These metrics can highlight key characteristics of an ontology schema as well as its population and enable users to make an informed …

The Perils Of Higher Skill Shortages For Pakistan’S Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2005

The Perils Of Higher Skill Shortages For Pakistan’S Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

It is highly paradoxical that in a developing country such as Pakistan, we are experiencing serious skill shortages and, at the same time, high rates of open and under employment. A lot has already been said about the causes of the mismatch between the skills required by the economy and the skills generated by the educational institutions. In this paper, I am also not going to focus on technical and vocational skills such as carpenters, masons, electricians, plumbers, automobile, air conditioning, refrigeration mechanics, medical technicians, nurses, foremen, etc. but mostly on higher skills such as needed by the I.T. and …

The deminer was doing clearance around an accident site where an AP mine blew off the tire of a car on the 23rd November. The soil in the area is hard and there are lots of metal pieces in the ground. The mine was detonated by the deminer during excavation most likely due to incorrect procedures. The blast went through a gap between the visor and the vest and caused injuries to the deminers face. Also the thumb on his right hand received injuries. The leather gloves the deminer was wearing saved him from worse injuries.

A Tale Of Three Nations?: The Role Of United Nations Peacekeepers And Missions On The Concept Of Nation-State, Nationalism, And Ownership Of The State In Lebanon, The Democratic Republic Of The Congo, And Kosovo, Alexandra R. Harrington

ExpressO

The concept of nationalism of ideology and shared values has existed since Biblical times, and has only become more prominent in societal structure in the centuries which have followed . Many attempts to define what is and is not nationalism have been made throughout history, yet despite these attempts there is no perfect formula for what gives rise to nationalism or what makes a nation-state and how to create it. However, at its core a nation is made of people, and all nations, regardless of organization, ideology, or ethnicity, turn to law to control – if not shape – their …
