27 | Shoham (North): Late Chalcolithic Burial Caves In The Lod Valley, Israel, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink, Ram Gophna Dec 2005

27 | Shoham (North): Late Chalcolithic Burial Caves In The Lod Valley, Israel, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink, Ram Gophna

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

The IAA salvage excavations at Shoham in the Lod Valley revealed four interconnected karstic caves that were used for burial as well as domestic purposes during the Chalcolithic period and the Early Bronze Age I and Intermediate Bronze Age. They are part of an entire system of cemeteries located within the karstic caves in the limestone foothills of the region. The finds include rich assemblages of burial goods, particularly the ceramic ossuaries of the Chalcolithic period. The finds enable a better understanding of Chalcolithic mortuary behavior in the region, and the relationship between the settlements and the cemeteries––the living and …

Men As Caregivers At The End Of Life, Erik K. Fromme, Linda L. Drach, Susan W. Tolle, Patricia Ebert, Pamela Miller, Nancy Perrin, Virginia P. Tilden

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Few studies have focused on men as caregivers at the end-of-life. The objective of this secondary data analysis was to examine the experiences of men involved in end-oflife caregiving, focusing on caregiver strain.

Methods: We used a random sample of Oregon death certificates to telephone survey family caregivers of Oregonians who had died 2 to 5 months earlier in private homes, nursing homes, and other community-based settings. Measurements included single-item indicators and embedded scales to measure caregiver strain and perceived decedent symptom distress. For the 25 husbands, sons, wives, and daughters who reported the highest levels of strain, we …

Effect Of Hormone Replacement Therapy On Hemostatic Variables In Post-Menopausal Women, Hana M. Al-Farra, Sahar K. Al-Fahoum, Mohammed A. Tabbaa

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been increasingly promoted over the last 40 years to improve quality of life, and to reduce the risks of osteoporotic fractures and coronary heart disease (CHD). Recent randomized controlled clinical trials reported that HRT usage is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and venous thrombosis. We conducted this study to evaluate the mean levels of some hemostatic parameters among groups that differ in estrogen levels and age. METHODS: We studied 150 healthy women in an observational comparative study, divided into 3 groups. Forty women were post-menopausal using HRT for a …

Induction Of Clindamycin Resistance In Erythromycin-Resistant, Clindamycin Susceptible And Methicillin-Resistant Clinical Staphylococcal Isolates, Abdulrahman A. Kader, Angamuthu Kumar, Ananth Krishna

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the in vitro ability of erythromycin to induce clindamycin in erythromycin resistant and clindamycin susceptible clinical isolates of Staphylococci. METHODS: We studied 291 clinical isolates of erythromycin-resistant (ER-R) clindamycin-susceptible Staphylococci (CL-S) at Almana General Hospitals, Al-Khobar, Dammam, Saudi Arabia during the period from June 2004 to May 2005. The isolates included 70 Staphylococcus aureus, 81 Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and 140 coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CNS). We examined these isolates for inducible clindamycin resistance (ICR) by erythromycin induction test using double disc susceptibility test (D-test). Strains producing ICR show flattening of the clindamycin disc zone adjacent to the …

Chlamydia Pneumoniae Seropositivity And Risk Of Developing Coronary Heart Disease In Western Saudi Arabia, Aiman M. Momenah, Mohammed T. Tayeb

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the seroprevalence of IgG and IgA antibodies against Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) among a sample of the Saudi population, and to evaluate whether there is a relationship between seropositivity to chronic infection with C. pneumoniae and the manifestation of symptomatic coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: We collected 273 sera samples from CHD patients and 273 sera samples from healthy matched controls from the Western region of Saudi Arabia during the period from November 2004 to May 2005. We tested anti-chlamydial IgG and IgA antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. RESULTS: We found 239 (87.5%) patients and 213 …

Fractal Dimensions In Perceptual Color Space: A Comparison Study Using Jackson Pollock’S Art, Jonas R. Mureika Dec 2005

Fractal Dimensions In Perceptual Color Space: A Comparison Study Using Jackson Pollock’S Art, Jonas R. Mureika

Physics Faculty Works

The fractal dimensions of color-specific paint patterns in various Jackson Pollock paintings are calculated using a filtering process that models perceptual response to color differences (L*a*b* color space). The advantage of the L*a*b* space filtering method over traditional red-green-blue (RGB) spaces is that the former is a perceptually uniform (metric) space, leading to a more consistent definition of “perceptually different” colors. It is determined that the RGB filtering method underestimates the perceived fractal dimension of lighter-colored patterns but not of darker ones, if the same selection criteria is applied to each. Implications of the findings to Fechner’s “principle of …

Blind Spots: The Effects Of Information And Stakes On Fairness Bias And Dispersion, James Konow Dec 2005

Blind Spots: The Effects Of Information And Stakes On Fairness Bias And Dispersion, James Konow

Economics Faculty Works

Mounting empirical research provides evidence of fairness bias and its economic and social effects, where fairness bias refers here to a deviation of claims from unbiased justice due to a personal stake. A far less appreciated issue is dispersion of fairness views and claims, which is also important for its effects on disagreements, empirical analysis, and philosophical theories. This study undertakes a systematic analysis of the effects on fairness bias and dispersion of two variables: stakes and information. Most philosophical and social science analyses related to justice and bias associate heightened bias with increased information and, conversely, impartiality with the …

An Industry Assessment: Are Aircraft Dispatchers In A Holding Pattern?, Georgiann Sailer Dec 2005

An Industry Assessment: Are Aircraft Dispatchers In A Holding Pattern?, Georgiann Sailer

Theses and Dissertations

This industry assessment provided an in-depth view of the aircraft dispatcher industry. An assessment of the industry was needed to project the future of the aircraft dispatcher profession, as well as indicate the necessity of additional aircraft dispatcher training facilities in the United States. The position of an aircraft dispatcher originated in 1938 as a result of numerous aircraft accidents. It was believed that the repeated accidents occurred due to the lack of ground assistance to the pilot, therefore a new Airman Certificate was created, the aircraft dispatcher certificate. Some of the duties of an aircraft dispatcher include aircraft navigation, …

Investigation Of Egocentric And Exocentric Distance Perception In Virtual Environments: Application To Enhance Transfer Of Training In Multi-Model Ves, Cali Fidopiastis

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

In this report we summarize the results for three experiments completed during the Link Fellowship period. The aim of the first and second experiments were to test the efficacy of a novel assessment procedure for determining visual acuity and quantifying depth errors of observers wearing an optical see-t1u·ough prototype head-mounted display. If successful, the assessments could provide an optimization procedure capable of discerning limitations attributed to separate components of the VE system or to the system as a whole. The second experiment explored the feasibility of utilizing mixed reality (a mix of real and virtual items) environments for the study …

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Purpose of review: Velo-cardio-facial syndrome has emerged from obscurity to become one of the most researched disorders this past decade. It is one of the most common genetic syndromes in humans, the most common contiguous gene syndrome in humans, the most common syndrome of cleft palate, and the most common syndrome of conotruncal heart malformations. Velo-cardio-facial syndrome has an expansive phenotype, a factor reflected in the wide range of studies that cover both clinical features and molecular genetics. In this review, we cover multiple areas of research during the past year, including psychiatric disorders, neuroimaging, and the delineation of clinical …
