An Analog Vlsi Implementation Of A Multi-Scale Spike Detection Algorithm For Extracellular Neural Recordings, Christy L. Rogers, John G. Harris, Jose C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper discusses a multi-scale neural spike detection algorithm for a low-power analog circuit implementation. The key idea is to implement wavelet decomposition and improve spike detection by independently controlling thresholds for each scale. Each thresholder scale is then combined to provide a single output indicating a spike occurrence. This spike detection algorithm shows promising results towards a robust, compact, and unsupervised low power analog spike detection circuit. A low power front-end spike detection circuit can be added to a neural amplifier and dramatically reduce the required data bandwidth for BMI applications. © 2005 IEEE.

United States Food Law Update, Michael Tingey Roberts Dec 2005

United States Food Law Update, Michael Tingey Roberts

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This update summarizes significant changes and developments in food law over the first half of 2005. Not every change in national food law for the first half of 2005 is included; instead, this update is limited to significant changes in national law. New developments in state law, while certainly important and deserving of attention, are beyond the scope of this update. These updates provide a starting point for scholars, practitioners, food scientists, and policymakers determined to understand the shaping of food law in modem society. Tracing the development of food law through these updates also builds an important historical context …

The Food Safety And Inspection Service's Lack Of Statutory Authority To Suspend Inspection For Failure To Comply With Haccp Regulations, Dennis R. Johnson, Jolyda O. Swaim Dec 2005

The Food Safety And Inspection Service's Lack Of Statutory Authority To Suspend Inspection For Failure To Comply With Haccp Regulations, Dennis R. Johnson, Jolyda O. Swaim

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Since the implementation of the Mega-Reg, the agency has had mixed success with its new enforcement procedures. Although most establishments have chosen to work with FSIS to modify their procedures to allay any concerns the agency had, on a few occasions, no compromise was reached. In these cases, the establishment filed suit in federal district court challenging the agency's authority to remove inspectors for failure to comply with the Mega-Reg. In the three cases where the agency's authority was challenged, the establishment was successful and inspection was restored.

Preempting Food Safety: An Examination Of Usda Rulemaking And Its E.Coli O157:H7 Policy In Light Of Estate Of Kriefall Ex Rel. Kriefall V. Excel Corporation, Denis Stearns

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This article will use the Kriefall decision to examine USDA rulemaking and its still-evolving E. coli 0157:H7 policy. Part II of the article will briefly describe the development and implementation of the USDA E. coli 0157:H7 policy as a reaction to an enormous and widely-publicized outbreak of E. coli infections that occurred in 1993-the so-called Jack in the Box outbreak. Following the outbreak, E. coli 0157:H7 was declared by USDA to be an adulterant per se according to FMIA. It was also at this time that the first steps were taken by USDA to move from a "command and control" …

required to diagnose the failure, i.e., to identify the source of the failure. Diagnosis is challenging because fast error propagation may occur in high throughput distributed applications. The diagnosis often needs to be probabilistic in nature due to imperfect observability of the payload system, inability to do white-box testing, constraints on the amount of state that can be maintained at the diagnostic process, and imperfect tests used to verify the system. In this paper, we extend an existing Monitor architecture, for probabilistic diagnosis of failures in large-scale network protocols. The Monitor only observes the message exchanges between the protocol entities …

Towards An Integrated Land Use Data Base For Assessing The Potential For Greenhouse Gas Mitigation, Huey-Lin Lee, Thomas Hertel, Brent Sohngen, Navin Ramankutty

GTAP Technical Papers Archive

This paper describes the GTAP Land Use Data Base designed to support integrated assessments of the potential for greenhouse gas mitigation. It disaggregates land use by agro-ecological zone (AEZ). To do so, it draws upon global land cover data bases, as well as state-of-the-art definition of AEZs from the FAO and IIASA. Agro-ecological zoning segments a parcel of land into smaller units according to agro-ecological characteristics, including: precipitation, temperature, soil type, terrain conditions, etc. Each zone has a similar combination of constraints and potential for land use. In the GTAP-AEZ Data Base, there are 18 AEZs, covering six different lengths …

“New Words, New Everything”: Fragmentation And Trauma In Jean Rhys, Maren Linett Dec 2005

“New Words, New Everything”: Fragmentation And Trauma In Jean Rhys, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

Jean Rhys’s novels present an intriguing case study for thinking about the status and meaning of fragmented text. With their polyvocal, nonlinear narration, often presented through interior monologues, novels such as Voyage in the Dark and Good Morning, Midnight exemplify modernist fragmentation while intimating a deeper sense of pain and loss than most accounts of such fragmentation acknowledge. In spite of the strong undertone of psychological damage it conveys, the fragmentary nature of Rhys’s writing is sometimes celebrated by critics as evidence of a subversive stance, either in Rhys or in her characters. Such a response is not peculiar to …

A Language And Compiler For Enabling Automatic And Parallel Chemistry Simulations, Jun Cao, Ayush Goyal, Sam P. Midkiff, Y. Charlie Hu, James M. Caruthers

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The modeling of chemical reactions, and the ability to predict the properties of the end- products of a chemical reaction, is of extreme commercial importance. The properties of many compounds have complex dependencies on a variety of additives, in ways that are not well understood. This paper describes a domain specific language, compiler and parallel runtime system that allows chemists to investigate, and understand how, different additives affect these properties. In particular, our system allows the inputs and types of reactions that are possible to be specified in a high level language. It then produces a set of ordinary differential …

Imre Kertész's Nobel Prize, Public Discourse, And The Media, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek Dec 2005

Imre Kertész's Nobel Prize, Public Discourse, And The Media, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek, in his paper, "Imre Kertész's Nobel Prize, Public Discourse, and the Media," discusses aspects of media coverage in German-, Hungarian-, and English-language newspapers and magazines of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded to Imre Kertész. The perspective of Tötösy's analysis is to gauge the importance and impact of media coverage comparatively in the three cultural and media landscapes. Based on selected examples from newspapers and magazines with an international scope, Tötösy argues that the reception of Kertész's Nobel Prize suggests the convergence of the media (as the message) and the contents of the message within …

Summary Of Sampson V. State, 121 Nev. Adv. Op. 80, Denise S. Balboni

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Admission of expert testimony is within the sole discretion of the trial judge. Abuse of discretion does not exist where defense counsel waited until the eighth day of trial to seek to call a newly-named expert witness without sufficient justification for the delay. The Nevada Supreme Court adopts the rule against admission of witness and prosecution comments regarding a defendant’s invocation of Fourth Amendment rights when such evidence is used to support an inference of guilt. When the district court admits such evidence, this Court will determine the existence of reversible error by application of the same test used for …

Website Optimization, Design, And Restructuring., Christopher Thomas Gibson Dec 2005

Website Optimization, Design, And Restructuring., Christopher Thomas Gibson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The website has become a staple in the business environment, to provide information and services, and connect business-to-business and business-to-customers. Many of these sites require re-engineering in order to facilitate the needed complexities and frequent changes demanded. For such efforts, it is essential for web management to be adequately quantified with relevant metrics and measures. This thesis investigates useful metrics through a case study approach and presents usability and maintainability as the two primary categories of metrics, which provide useful information for web engineering analysis and development.

Optimization Of Process Parameters For Direct Metal Deposition Of Nickel., Steven James Gravatte Dec 2005

Optimization Of Process Parameters For Direct Metal Deposition Of Nickel., Steven James Gravatte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research was performed to establish the feasibility of using Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) technology to deposit nickel powder to a nickel substrate. The substrate is electrodeposited pure nickel, and the material to be deposited is Metco 56C-NS Nickel powder which is 99.5% nickel and 0.5% trace elements. The DMD process is a form of laser welding; metallica powder is fed into and melted by a high power C02 later, which also melts the substrate. As the melted substrate and power re-crystallize, they form a metallurgical bond, as opposed to the mechanical bond created in a normal welding process. The …

Fabrication Of A Microfluidic Platform For Impedance Analysis Of Cultured Endothelial Cell Monolayers., Stuart J. Williams 1981-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Assessing the functionality of the endothelium can provide insight into the initiation and formation of arterial diseases. One of the most important functions of the endothelial layer is its permeability. The integrity of the cell monolayer and its ability to transport molecules can be assessed in vitro by investigating the electrical impedance. In this study, a microfluidic platform was created using an electrode-patterned glass substrate and microfluidic poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) substrate. The electrode glass base of the structure was fabricated with platinum square electrodes of various sizes ranging from 10x10 ìm2 to 160x160 ìm2 and a larger, common counter electrode. …
