What if it could be possible to convince a completely non-neoclassical economist of the importance of Central Bank independence? The profession currently favors arguments in favor of Central Bank independence that are based on the seminal work by Barro and Gordon (1983 a,b), a model with naturally strong neoclassical assumptions. As a consequence of this, the argument in favor of Central Bank independence routinely given by economists is often not bought by those who question the validity of the neoclassical assumptions. Integral abutment bridges (IAB) have become a popular alternative to expansion joint bridges mainly due to their lower maintenance and repair costs. Although no specific guidelines exist for integral abutment bridge design, standards primarily used assume the volumetric changes of IAB under thermal loading occur free of constraint. This study examines the validity of this assumption and determines the effect of changing temperature on the state of stress in the superstructure of an IAB. To extend research on the relation between temporal control and resistance to change, the temporal location of response-independent food was examined in a modified peak-interval procedure (PIP) with pigeons. Sequences of the PIP consisted of 2, 3, 4 or 5 FI 30-s trials followed by a 90-s peak trial, each separated by a 90-s blackout. In different conditions, response-independent food was delivered within the first, last, or a randomly selected FI trial of each sequence. Overall, quarter-life values, peak times, and peak rates showed the highest decrease in temporal control relative to baseline when disruption occurred in the last FI …

Aerated and nonaerated compost tea extracts (CT) prepared from seven composts were applied to two tomato cultivars in greenhouse experiments. CT from hay compost significantly decreased early blight disease severity compared to the control in one experiment. Mushroom CT increased disease severity in most experiments. The cultivar 'Brandywine' had significantly higher disease severity (P=0.0001) than 'WV '63'.;In a compost rate field experiment, disease severity was lower in the control and compost at 10 and 20 tons/acre treatments than at 2.5 and 5 tons/acre.;In a second field experiment, yield and early blight disease severity varied significantly among composts from varied feedstocks …

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in Appalachia frequently experience limitations in food availability. In order to determine temporal variation in consumption, successful feeding, and corresponding population patterns and growth, the feeding dynamics of a population of brook trout were monitored throughout a headwater watershed over the course of two years. The Middle Fork River brook trout experienced food limitation throughout summer and fall, however, mean consumption estimates fell below maintenance ration only during the winter seasons. Consumption estimates were significantly related to watershed position, as fish in low density, downstream reaches consistently consumed significantly more energy than fish upstream during warm …

Four experiments were conducted to evaluate two measures of reproductive efficiency in cattle, conception rate and retention of pregnancy. In experiment I, the relationship between concentrations of progesterone and retention of pregnancy was examined. The corpus luteum (CL) was removed on day 29 of pregnancy in 40 suckled, beef cows, and pregnancy was supported with exogenous progesterone to day 53. Concentrations of progesterone (1.8 +/- 0.1 ng/mL between days 30 and 38), were below those normally recorded for pregnant cows. Retention of pregnancy (77%) was monitored frequently using ultrasonography until day 53 and was negatively associated with age of cow, …

A Detailed Sequential Extraction Study Of Selenium In Coal And Coal-Associated Strata From A Coal Mine In West Virginia, Mimi Roy

This study of the mode of occurrence and distribution of selenium in a rock core from southcentral West Virginia reveals that total selenium concentration varies by rock type. Rocks with total selenium >1 mg/kg were of circum-neutral pH based on acid base accounting data. No direct correlation was found between selenium concentration in the rocks and that of sulfur and/or total organic carbon. The distribution of total selenium was also controlled by stratigraphy. The amount of total selenium extracted from various rock types like coal, shale, sandstone, mudstone and "carbolith" materials ranged from 50%. Selenium extracted from coal was mostly …

The objective of this research project is to evaluate impact of change in AASHTO T 283 test method on Superpave mix designs in West Virginia. The Lottman test method and Tunnicliff and Root test method were combined into Modified Lottman test procedure and published as AASHTO T 283 in 1985 and revised in 1989. Research was done to establish how the Superpave compaction and conditioning method affect the test results. As a result of this research, AASHTO T 283 test method was revised in 2003. Iris recognition, the ability to recognize and distinguish individuals by their iris pattern, is the most reliable biometric in terms of recognition and identification performance. However, performance of these systems is affected by poor quality imaging. In this work, we extend previous research efforts on iris quality assessment by analyzing the effect of seven quality factors: defocus blur, motion blur, off-angle, occlusion, specular reflection, lighting, and pixel-counts on the performance of traditional iris recognition system. Articular cartilage is a connective tissue that covers the ends of bones in joints, providing a nearly frictionless bearing surface for efficiently transmitting loads to the underlying joint. It is made up of specialized cells called chondrocytes that are responsible for its growth and maintenance. Studies indicate that cells remodel the tissue in response to mechanical loading. This thesis synthesizes available research on the global software development paradigm into an integrated model. Acoustic signature classification offers a unique capability of exploiting acoustic sensor data to computationally discriminate between detected sources. There are many variations of different techniques currently being used for acoustic classification. A comparison of some of these methods is presented and, performance analyses are documented for each test case within the matrix of presented techniques. This matrix consists of power spectral density and Prony type feature vectors combined with Bayesian maximum likelihood and backpropagation neural network classifiers. This paper presents how high frequency Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be effectively used for mapping the subsurface characterization of dolomite and limestone strata for determination if the rock is suitable for ripping. the results of the experiments conducted in the course of this project illustrated that water saturation helps in increasing the contrast between the dielectric constants of the separations, due to water escaping into cracks and clay layers. Running the survey on a dry rock will give a larger penetration depth; but during the interpretation of the results, one can omit small voids or clay layers. © 2005 …

Western fascination with the body and all things corporeal has permeated millennial anthropology,capturing the attention of anthropologists working in different parts of the world. In lowland South America, Seeger, da Matta, and Viveiros de Castro (1979) called attention, early on, to the Amerindian propensity to use the body as the main instrument to convey social and cosmological meanings.
