Distributed Blowing And Suction For The Purpose Of Streak Control In A Boundary Layer Subjected To A Favorable Pressure Gradient, Eric Forgoston, Anatoli Tumin, David E. Ashpis

An analysis of the optimal control by blowing and suction in order to generate streamwise velocity streaks is presented. The problem is examined using an iterative process that employs the Parabolized Stability Equations for an incompressible fluid along with its adjoint equations. In particular, distributions of blowing and suction are computed for both the normal and tangential velocity perturbations for various choices of parameters.

A three-dimensional wave packet generated by a local disturbance in a hypersonic boundary layer flow is studied with the aid of the previously solved initial-value problem. The solution to this problem can be expanded in a biorthogonal eigenfunction system as a sum of discrete and continuous modes. A specific disturbance consisting of an initial temperature spot is considered, and the receptivity to this initial temperature spot is computed for both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases. Using previous analysis of the discrete and continuous spectrum, we numerically compute the inverse Fourier transform. The two-dimensional inverse Fourier transform is found for Mode …

To deal with rising city center congestion and its associated pollution, the UK government has proposed a number of policy measures. In particular, the 1998 White Paper indicated that “the bus industry will make an important and cost-effective contribution to tackling congestion and pollution at the local level.” Since the privatization of the bus industry during the 1980s, local government—the primary agents of delivering transport policy objectives in the UK—have had relatively little control over the provision of bus services in their localities, particularly outside London. Concern has been expressed by planners and policy-makers that the “add capacity” strategy used in building more roads to resolve traffic-induced problems is no longer a feasible option. This article explores private transport behavior in understanding how users can be persuaded to adopt a more blended approach (i.e., integrating car, public transportation, and alternative modes on a daily basis). The research methodology adopted focus groups and travel diaries in presenting a number of social marketing message appeals aimed at inducing a change in participants’ travel behaviors. Public Transport Reforms In Seoul: Innovations Motivated By Funding Crisis, John Pucher, Hyungyong Park, Mook Han Kim, Jumin Song

Journal of Public Transportation

On July 1, 2004, the Seoul Metropolitan Government introduced a wide range of reforms to its public transport system: it completely reorganized bus services, installed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors, improved coordination of bus and metro services, and fully integrated the fare structure and ticketing system between routes as well as modes. This article describes the public transport reforms in Seoul and assesses their impacts on safety, speed, costs, passenger levels, and overall customer satisfaction.

Java monitors are classes that are intended to be accessed by multiple threads at the same time. Detecting synchronization faults in Java Monitors is considerably more challenging than testing regular classes, due to the inherent non-determinism of concurrent programs. This thesis proposes a state based exploration approach to testing Java monitors. There is ongoing research on sequence mining of time-series data. We study Hybrid Apriori, an interval-based approach to episode discovery that deals with different periodicities in time-series data. Our study identifies the anomaly in the Hybrid Apriori by confirming the false positives in the frequent episodes discovered. The anomaly is due to the folding phase of the algorithm, which combines periods in order to compress data. We propose a main memory based solution to distinguish the false positives from the true frequent episodes. This thesis investigates parallel processing techniques for solving the 3 x 3 x 3 Rubik's Cube. We explore various state-space search based algorithmic approaches to optimally solve the Cube. The parallel processing approach is based on IDA* using a pattern database as the underlying heuristic because of its well established effectiveness. The parallel algorithm is an extension of the Michael Reid algorithm which is sequential. The parallel algorithm exhibits good speedup and scalability. Genetic programming is an automatic programming method that uses biologically inspired methods to evolve programs. Genetic programming, and evolutionary methods in general, are useful for problem domains in which a method for \emph{constructing} solutions is either not known or infeasible, but a method for \emph{rating} solutions exists. In order to address more complex problem domains, techniques exist to extract functions (modules) automatically during a GP search. In this thesis a new OFDM based wavelet domain diversity combining method is proposed to combat errors during image transmission on wireless channels. A novel concept of utilizing OFDM sub-carriers to attain diversity is designed and analyzed. For images represented in the wavelet domain, diversity is used to obtain multiple data streams using OFDM symbols corresponding to the transmitted image at the receiver. These individual image data streams are combined to form a composite image with higher perceptual quality. Both uncompressed and compressed images are considered. In Part I, a simple and mild condensation route for the synthesis of novel bibenzimidazole oligomers and polymers is described using methyl 2,2,2-trichloroacetimidate as a key starting material. The dimer, trimer, tetramer, and polymers of bibenzimidazole were synthesized as a new series of potential conjugated chelating ligands for the metallopolymer studies. The polymers show the maximum absorption at around 400 nm. The optical band gap of the polymer is estimated to be 2.68 eV. In Part II, a series of multinuclear Ru complexes containing di-, tetra-, and octa-RuII centers based on the oligomeric bibenzimidazoles were synthesized and characterized. The species …
