Interview With Dr. Gary Yia Lee, Paul Hillmer
Interview With Dr. Gary Yia Lee, Paul Hillmer
Hmong Oral History Project
Dr. Gary Yia Lee, distinguished anthropologist and scholar, traveled from his home in Sydney, Australia to California for a funeral, then made a stop to visit family in the Twin Cities. Tou Thao, his nephew, is an alumnus of Concordia University and a founder of the Hmong Oral History Project. He prevailed on his kind uncle, despite jet lag, the exhausting effects of a three-day funeral, and many, many demands on his time (including a presentation at Concordia University on 29 December), to sit down with me. I owe many thanks-and apologies-to Dr. Lee, his wife Maylee Lee, and the …

Sphingosine 1-phosphate is a bioactive sphingolipid that regu- lates cell growth and suppresses programmed cell death. The bio- synthesis of sphingosine 1-phosphate is catalyzed by sphingosine kinase (SK) but the mechanism by which the subcellular localization and activity of SK is regulated in response to various stimuli is not fully understood. To elucidate the origin and structural determi- nant of the specific subcellular localization of SK, we performed biophysical and cell studies of human SK1 (hSK1) and selected mutants. In vitro measurements showed that hSK1 selectively bound phosphatidylserine over other anionic phospholipids and strongly preferred the plasma membrane-mimicking membrane to …
Diagnosis Of Alcoholism Based On Neural Network Analysis Of Phenotypic Risk Factors, Catherine T. Falk
Diagnosis Of Alcoholism Based On Neural Network Analysis Of Phenotypic Risk Factors, Catherine T. Falk
Publications and Research
Background Alcoholism is a serious public health problem. It has both genetic and environmental causes. In an effort to gain understanding of the underlying genetic susceptibility to alcoholism, a long-term study has been undertaken. The Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) provides a rich source of genetic and phenotypic data. One ongoing problem is the difficulty of reliably diagnosing alcoholism, despite many known risk factors and measurements. We have applied a well known pattern-matching method, neural network analysis, to phenotypic data provided to participants in Genetic Analysis Workshop 14 by COGA. The aim is to train the network …

Marjorie A. Langell Publications
The surface crystal structure of the Co3O4(1 1 0) spinel was characterized by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Well-defined LEED diffraction patterns showed an unreconstructed Co3O4(1 1 0) surface in Type A termination, and XPS and Auger indicated the surface to be stoichiometric with octahedral and tetrahedral cation sites occupied by 3+ and 2+ cations, respectively. The experimental lattice parameters of 8.22 Å ± 0.2 Å and 5.50 Å ± 0.2 Å in the (0 0 1) and (1¯ 1 0) directions, respectively, …

Determining the chemical structure and composition of biomass fuels using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy XPS can provide fundamental knowledge of their structures that is useful in understanding and predicting their combustion behavior. Grain screenings are an example of an agricultural residue byproduct of food and feed production of potential interest for biomass combustion. The XPS spectra of grain screenings provide both its elemental composition and indications of its bonding. Traditional fuel analyses of this fuel are also provided. These include: ultimate analysis — the elemental composition of the overall fuel C, H, N, S, and O; chlorine analysis — reported here …

Background: Genome-wide association will soon be available to use as an adjunct to traditional linkage analysis. We studied alcoholism in 119 families collected by the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism and made available in Genetic Analysis Workshop 14, using genome-wide linkage and association analyses. Methods: Genome-wide linkage analysis was first performed using microsatellite markers and a region with the strongest linkage evidence was further analyzed using single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Family based genome-wide association test was also conducted using the SNPs. Results: Nonparametric linkage analysis revealed weak linkage evidence on chromosome 7, and association analysis identified SNP tscOS 15272 …

We explored the power and consistency to detect linkage and association with meta-analysis and pooled data analysis using Genetic Analysis Workshop 14 simulated data. The first 10 replicates from Aipotu population were used. Significant linkage and association was found at all 4 regions containing the major loci for Kofendrerd Personality Disorder (KPD) using both combined analyses although no significant linkage and association was found at all these regions in a single replicate. The linkage results from both analyses are consistent in terms of the significance level of linkage test and the estimate of locus location. After correction for multiple-testing, significant …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
An inventory of mammals in the vicinity of Brownsberg Nature Park, Suriname, incorporated a number of different sampling methods including examining museum voucher specimens, an animal-rescue operation, transect surveys, camera photo-traps, and interviews with local inhabitants. We document a total of 125 mammal species present in the Park. These include ten opossums, five pilosans, four armadillos, 58 bats, eight monkeys, 13 carnivores, one tapir, four artiodactyls, and 22 rodents. Nine of these species are reported for the first time from Suriname: one mouse opossum (Marmosops pinheiroi); one naked-backed moustached bat (Pteronotus gymnonotus); four fruit-eating bats ( …

Let lamda be an associative ring with identity and with the Jacobson radical r, let mod lamda be the category of finitely generated left lamda-modules, and let lamdaop be the opposite ring of lamda. All modules are left unital modules, and if X is a module then pd X is the projective dimension of X. If lamda is left artinian and M in mod labmda, we denote by P(M) a projective cover of M.

College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Errors while genotyping are inevitable and can reduce the power to detect linkage. However, does genotyping error have the same impact on linkage results for single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and microsatellite (MS) marker maps? To evaluate this question we detected genotyping errors that are consistent with Mendelian inheritance using large changes in multipoint identity-by-descent sharing in neighboring markers. Only a small fraction of Mendelian consistent errors were detectable (e.g., 18% of MS and 2.4% of SNP genotyping errors). More SNP genotyping errors are Mendelian consistent compared to MS genotyping errors, so genotyping error may have a greater impact on linkage results …

A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) system that is being developed at the University of Malaya for the control of a prosthetic hand consists of a computer, a BCI box and a prosthetic hand. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are acquired using two or four electrodes placed on the scalp of a subject. In the BCI box, the EEG signals are amplified and filtered. The filtered signals are digitized and sent to a computer. Signal processing, feature extraction and classification are carried out in the computer. The classification results are sent to the controller to operate the prosthetic hand. The present thesis describes my …

Book Review: The Myth Of Law And Literature, Bernadette A. Meyler
Book Review: The Myth Of Law And Literature, Bernadette A. Meyler
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
In The Myth of Moral Justice, Thane Rosenbaum generates an ambitious and idealistic plan for a rapprochement between law and morality, between emotion and reason, and between law and its literary representations. Laudable and inspiring, Rosenbaum's project remains flawed in several ways that are traceable back to his reliance on aspects of law and literature scholarship. Unfortunately, Rosenbaum's attempt to replace the myth of moral justice with a truly moral legal system depends itself on a particular set of myths about law and literature. After examining two recent critiques of the law and literature movement, one from the vantage point …
