Atlantic Intersections: Early American Commerce And The Rise Of The Spanish West Indies (Cuba), Linda K. Salvucci

History Faculty Research

An Atlantic approach to the history of early American trade challenges traditional British opinions and, indeed, much Anglo-American scholarship regarding the commercial prospects of the new United States. Contemporary Spanish observations, in contrast to the more familiar and widely cited ones in English, correctly predicted the post-Revolutionary War integration of American and Spanish imperial markets. As political, diplomatic, and economic upheavals broke down the old mercantilist system, U.S. merchants quickly succeeded in exploiting their comparative advantage in the expanding Atlantic economy. The Relationship Between The Number Of Shots And The Quality Of Gamma Knife Radiosurgeries, D Cheek, Allen G. Holder, M Fuss, B Salter

Radiosurgery is a non-invasive alternative to brain surgery that uses a single focused application of high radiation to destroy intracerebral target tissues. A Gamma Knife delivers such treatments by using 201 cylindrically collimated cobalt-60 sources that are arranged in a hemispherical pattern and aimed to a common focal point. The accumulation of radiation at the focal point, called a \shot" due to the spherical nature of the dose distribution, is used to ablate (or destroy) target tissue in the brain. In engineering applications, we need to make decisions under uncertainty. Traditionally, in engineering, statistical methods are used, methods assuming that we know the probability distribution of different uncertain parameters. Usually, we can safely linearize the dependence of the desired quantities y (e.g., stress at different structural points) on the uncertain parameters xi - thus enabling sensitivity analysis. Often, the number n of uncertain parameters is huge, so sensitivity analysis leads to a lot of computation time. To speed up the processing, we propose to use special Monte-Carlo-type simulations.

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Public sociology is neither public nor sociology. Public sociology does not and cannot have an epistemology. Speaking only for and to itself, public sociology has no public. There is no debate with public sociology. Instead, public sociology has been successfully advertised and widely embraced among sociologists. Public sociology has consumers. Public sociology is the fast-food of social science. The influence of public sociology is visible and real as it has been institutionalized in various ways. I analyze the conditions of the institutionalization of public sociology and critically evaluate its dynamics and consequences.

Microentrepreneurship And Job Creation: Multiple-Case Study Of Hud Microenterprise Development Assistance Programs In Upstate New York, James O. Bates

This multiple-case study explores local government's use of HUDfunded microenterprise development assistance for job creation and selfemployment of low-to-moderate-income individuals. Respondent information was reviewed and then supplemented with document analysis and interview materials from earlier research on HUD microenterprise development assistance programs in upstate New York. Because the number of local government respondents who self-identified as providers of microenterprise development assistance was small, it was not possible to generalize research findings to the overall public microenterprise development sector. However, the study of this phenomenon, although limited, does have implications for government microfinance instrumentalities and intermediaries and for future research on …

The Trickle Up Program is a US-based organization engaged in microenterprise development for very poor households in 14 core countries, including India. Because it targets the most vulnerable sections of the population, such as the rural landless, women-led households, people with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged minorities, TUP employs a seed capital grant strategy to facilitate its clients' movement from absolute poverty toward economic self-reliance. TUP clients cannot risk taking a loan because they have no spare income to make payments if their enterprises do not generate an immediate profit. The 21st century technical services librarian has access to a plethora of electronic and online work tools from which to choose to complete daily tasks. An assessment of the Western Kentucky University Libraries 19 benchmark institutions shows a great disparity of online work tools made available through university libraries technical services departmental web sites. Four areas (technical services, cataloging, serials, and acquisitions) are discussed. Outcomes indicate that 1) few of these institutions list online work tools and 2) of those that do, there is very little overlap. This paper investigates this phenomenon of inconsistent technical services online work tools.

For packet video, information loss and bandwidth limitation are two factors that affect video playback quality. Traditional rate allocation approaches have focused on optimizing video quality under bandwidth constraint alone. However, in the best-effort Internet, packets carrying video data are susceptible to losses, which need to be reconstructed at the receiver side. In this paper, we propose loss aware rate allocations in both group-of-block (GOB) level and macroblock level, given that certain packets are lost during transmissions and reconstructed using simple interpolation methods at the receiver side. Self-archiving, the practice of depositing one's works in an OAI-compliant archive, is a key strategy for innovating scholarly communication and achieving open access. DL-Harvest, a subject service for Library and Information (LIS), based on the aggregation of OAI-PMH compliant metadata from both institutional and disciplinary digital repositories, including dLIST, is described. Additionally, results from two studies that explored LIS journal publishers' stances towards self-archiving as expressed in copyright transfer agreements (CTAs) and the scholarly communication behaviors of LIS scholars, with regard to self-archiving and searching, are presented and some implications for the development of federated subject services are highlighted.

This paper describes the theoretical framework and implementation of a database management system for storing and manipulating diverse probability distributions of discrete random variables with finite domains, and associated information. A formal Semistructured Probabilistic Object (SPO) data model and a Semistructured Probabilistic Query Algebra (SP-algebra) are proposed. The SP-algebra supports standard database queries as well as some specific to probabilities, such as conditionalization and marginalization. Thus, the Semistructured Probabilistic Database may be used as a backend to any application that involves the management of large quantities of probabilistic information, such as building stochastic models. Successful soybean production is greatly affected by variety selection for a given growing area. This publication reports the agronomic performance of entries in the 2005 South Dakota performance trials for conventional or non-Roundup Ready™ and Roundup Ready™ soybean varieties. Important factors in variety selection include yield, maturity, plant height, lodging resistance, and Phytophthora root rot resistance. In the case of public varieties, additional information including emergence, shattering, and iron chlorosis scores (Table A) are available to assist in making variety selections.
